It has been years since we'd eaten at this small place, which is very, very much a neighborhood diner, and that can be good in some ways, and not so good in some ways. When we walked in we were not greeted, so we grabbed an empty table which proved to be dirty, so we found another one on our own. There were two waitresses on the floor, one was at the cash register with a customer and spent a solid 10 minutes talking with her while new arrivals remained unattended to. The other waitress finally ended her conversation with a table that was finishing up their meal and brought us menus. We ordered a late breakfast meal - Alice going for the Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of Bacon (total of $6), and I picked a Breakfast Platter with 2 eggs, sausage, chunky Hash Browns & a biscuit ($5.50) with a side of Grits ($1.50), throw in a couple of drinks, and we ring in at $17.61. The food was out in good time, and there were some nice aspects to the food, but there was more than a bump or two, as well. The pancakes were a bit on the smallish side (see photos for Cagney's, Breakfastime, The Lighthouse, etc, etc) & were leathery, over cooked - a major disappointment since we had read rave reviews about the. The bacon was also over cooked, and very salty. The Eggs were perfectly soft scrambled, the chunky Hash Browns were excellent, as were the Grits. The Sausage was a bit over cooked (sitting on the grill?), and the Biscuit was terrible, dry & bland tasting - was told it was a Pillsbury biscuit. In summary, this was a bit of a disappointing experience, both as to the overall service and as to the quality of the food. It is a click-ish place, and while I appreciate friendly, engaging people, I also appreciate attentiveness and efficiency. Given the ambiance (noisy, cramped feeling), the food quality, and the service, we'd probably not return - and 3 stars is a bit of a reach. read more

Let me get this out at the onset -- Arthur's is no fancy joint, nor does it pretend to be. It's your basic neighborhood diner, which seems to serve a primarily local customer base -- but the offerings are well-made, and the service exceeds expectations. I initially stopped in only because I needed a place where I could spread out a few papers, answer some emails and maybe get in a quick bite during my thirty-minute visit. The cheerful server, upon seeing my laptop, volunteered that the establishment had free in-house Wi-Fi. My first surprise was upon logging in -- the throughput is somewhere in the neighborhood of 60/16Mbps, which is way better than any other restaurant or hotel I can recently remember (for those not technically inclined -- it's damned fast). My next surprise was that Arthur's possesses a beer/wine license. For a small family restaurant in the South, this is a welcome treat. I ordered a Modelo. The final surprise is the food and atmosphere. I ordered a small chef's salad, and was so comfortable at my booth that I ended up staying for an hour, snacking and working. The clientele seems to encompass a fair number of regulars, which is not surprising, considering that Arthur's is located in the heart of the historic Ardmore district. The atmosphere is like a family gathering, post-dinner, when folks walk around to others' tables. Sneaking glances at the orders of others, I came away with the impression that it's basic fare, but well-made, with an attractive presentation, and all working quite well at bringing in a steady flow of customers. If you're traveling through the region, it's ridiculously easy to reach -- Exit 3A off of I-40 Business (Knollwood Street); one mile south; park your car and c'mon in. I'm impressed enough that, upon my next visit, I plan to stop in for a more leisurely experience -- without the laptop. read more

This was my first visit to Cafe Arthur's. From the start I was met with smiles and hospitality. I got the meat lovers omelet and it was hot and delicious. My beverages were kept topped off and the ambiance is that of a home town diner. I highly recommend giving it a try. read more

I love Arthurs Cafe. Their vegetable soup is great comfort food (especially when leaving the cancer center. I love their salads . The one with chicken on top in my favorite...unmess i am getting it to go. Then i want the chef's salad. We love their 1000 dressing. I think they make it in-house. Their breakfast are great,especially the pancakes. We have always liked everything we tried. My daughter loves their grilled ham & cheese and their homemade chips - semi-floppy. Before Covid they would have Special Desserts - maybe they will come back - they had a lemon cake we all loved and a chocolate one that was yummy. Very flavorful but not heavy. I stayed at the family House down the road off & on for a couple of years... Arthur's was my go-to try to eat healthy but not eat at the hospital place. read more

Pancakes!!! I don't really get excited about pancakes. But these were a huge surprise. There was a crispness to the outside and a balance between fluffy and density on the inside. It stood out as a unique pancake. Not unique as if they are made differently, but unique as in this is how pancakes are supposed to be made. While many businesses use a mix, and they over stir that mix, creating a tough texture, Arthur's boasts that they use a 50-year-old Family recipe. It truly is worth going here just for the pancakes. The rest of breakfast was done quite well. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The chunky fried potatoes were nothing exciting, so I'll try the hash browns next time. The bacon was nice and crispy and the sausage links were standard fare, nothing special. The biscuits and gravy were okay, needed some salt and pepper and could use more sausage for my liking. But again, go for the pancakes, you won't be disappointed. This was our first time eating here but we will be back. read more

This place is awesome. it is classic diner fare, in a classic dinner. This place is a must for breakfast as the food is good and reasonably priced. Even at 9 am people were starting to line up to wait for tables . All of the food is solid with real sausage gravy made in house of which I am a big fan. The pancakes though are the star of the breakfast show. They are the same recipe from Arthur's mother many years ago and they are amazingly crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Try the classic plain ones or go with the chocolate chip. They are so good you really just need a little butter and no syrup. Don't let the humble exterior turn you away. Been going here for years, always for breakfast. It's your standard neighborhood diner, but that's not a bad thing. In fact, when I first started going here, I always asked for a chicken biscuit (at the time, it wasn't on the menu, but they made it for me anyway), and now it's a normal part of their menu. I'd like to think I made an impression, but hey who knows. The staff are good and hard-working, especially when it gets busy (which happens OFTEN... just down the street is a hospital, and the nurses love to come here and order drinks after work). I had breakfast. I was a little disappointed that the sausage was pre made patties as this is the type place where I would expect maybe some hand made Neese's patties. So the pancake was a little nondescript. Service was great but the breakfast did not quite have the kind of local edge that I like. It was more like a Denny's feel. This is a great place to eat if you're looking for a sit-down restaurant in the area, but you need fast service. The first day I visited, I ordered the spaghetti with mushrooms and a side salad with ranch (no caesar dressing available). The side salad was quite pithy, with LOTS of iceberg lettuce and white onion rings. The spaghetti tasted like the sauce came out of a jar. The second day I visited, I ordered a house salad (thinking it would be better) and sweet potato pie on special. The house salad consisted mostly of shredded iceberg lettuce. The sweet potato pie seemed to lack a kick to it. The pie was more of a store-bought pumpkin pie. I was disappointed. I think you get what you pay for, since the pie was only about $2. The food is below average, hence the rating. The server one day delivered the wrong drink to us (meant for another table). I LOVE Arthur's Café or Café Arthur's, not sure which way they prefer. To me this is a local treasure and the walls are decorated accordingly. My only real issue is that I always crave them on Sundays when they are not open! =( The location is right on the corner and easy to spot, has bright retro diner decor inside and out, but they are up to speed inside the kitchen. The parking lot is awkward and at certain times impossible to find a spot. The customer base seems to be majority elderly so I feel I am being too loud, however I do not see why more young people don't come here, this place is such a delight for me! The service is always nice, friendly, and a warm greeting when you walk-in. I can't say anything bad about their service any of the times I've ever been here and I bring EVERYONE who visits W-S here! I've had many of their menu items and everything is wonderful, very affordable, perfect proportion. Their hot chips are good sometimes a little over cooked. Their fries are perfectly crispy with a nice rugged coat on the outside and perfect softness on the inside, very fresh. I love their ranch and want to bottle it! Their club sandwiches are still the best in W-S that I know of (that is my test), their chicken teriyaki sandwich, steaks, burgers, potatoes, spaghetti & meatballs and many other items I'm forgetting are all very good. Every friend I have brought to this restaurant over the years and all have raved and want to return once they visit again! They have a variety of foods on their menu, from American, Italian, Greek, and i'm sure more. The only down side for me personally is if they had wheat bread as an option and if their salads weren't iceberg lettuce, but that seems to be a staple in every restaurant although it has no nutritional value whatsoever. I know not many people care about their lettuce but I do. I can make my own salad and just come there for everything else. Oh and don't forget they often have homemade desserts, I've had carrot cake, apple pie, and a blueberry thing of sorts. Just ask them to make sure it was freshly made that day sometimes it is a few days old, still yummy but a little stale. Overall I would give them 4.5 stars because there are areas they could improve upon but overall, I truly adore this place being there is only one Arthur's Café in the world and we have it in Winston-Salem, NC! =) I am always ready to devour my food, the dozens and dozens of times I have been here, I have never took a picture of their food, I will next time! read more

Great atmosphere and super friendly staff! I'm a huge fan of diners and hope that places like these continue to thrive. The breakfast food is decent but the portion sizes and prices are legit! If you work at the Baptist then you get a 10% discount which is awesome sauce. Also, they have 3 dollar domestic beers which is not a bad way to start off the morning. Arthur's is a true hidden gem!! I have lived in Winston Salem all of my 37 years and never visited Arthur's Cafe until yesterday, and I am so sad I have wasted so much time!! The menu is pretty diverse, burgers, some pasta, home cooked vegetables. What I ordered was the Tuscan Chicken Salad....omg!! The chicken is full of flavor, the portions are perfect, the dressing is spot on, it didn't take forever!! They also brought me a pickled apple slice that added the perfect brightness to the flavorful chicken. My wife and I stop by cafe arthurs Thursday evening for dinner we both ordered double cheeseburgers with a side of french fries my wife had a Pepsi and I got a cup of coffee with two creamers and a glass of water. She forgot the creamer and the server never once asked if my wife wants a refill on her Pepsi she constantly fill up my cup of coffee but overlooked and bypass my water she never once asked if we wanted dessert when the dinner was over she placed the bill on the table and never ask if she can get anything else for us never even once asked if we had any questions about the menu or if you have any concerns. she was quite rude to throw the receipt or bill on the table. I never I never had such crappy service and she sold herself short on getting a tip and if only she would have been a little bit nicer and a little bit more attentive instead of being in such a hurry to get out of her job for the is the end of the evening. when I was at Cafe Arthur's I can't believe have anybody to work for the restaurant business and tips by just be so hateful if you're in tips the best thing to do is ask for dessert and sell the menu. what's wrong here is everytime we stop in here and all the servers complain and there is no silverware on the table and when you mention it that you need silverware the server gets an attitude and says we just had a big crowd in here and we're trying to clean the tables and we don't even have a cashier it's nothing but complain complain complain . The problems of the establishment is customers need to be served taken care of because they don't have to cook . Frankly your server running your customers off. Servers need to be wearing name tags so customers know who to praise and who they need to complain about because not all servers are bad.
