When I lived nearby, this was one of my favorite little spots. It's the kind of place where the food is so-so but the sodas are cold and cast-off newspapers always abound. I actually hesitate to write this review because part of what makes Francisco so great is the laid back atmosphere. I'd hate to overcrowd the place. But they really do a great job here and they need the props. Food is great for the value and the atmosphere is second to none. From the worn out marble tables to the down-to-earth staff. I work around the corner from Cafe Francisco and have been here twice for lunch during the week. I've had both the Mediterranean and Caprese salads which were both tasty. The atmosphere inside the cafe is warm and there are a few tables set up outside to soak up the sun's rays while sipping your afternoon latte. What's not to love: It's FAST but not fast food; in fact, anything but. We had the falafel and the wild turkey sandwich on sourdough. They were both scrumptious. Nothing was oily-tasting. I suggest getting the turkey on sourdough because they toasted ours just so that it had that chewy consistency. Loved the mushroom spread on the turkey sandwich - they don't overdo the sauce like too many places. They have the art of light touch down - same with the tahini and basil on the falafel. Light but just enough for the palate to appreciate and savor. MInd you - all this from a small, corner, simple, unpretentious local joint with an old, hodgepodge of tables. AND the food is so affordably priced. My two sandwiches were $6 and $7. Another little nice touch but important thing I love is when you get your order to go, they put your sandwich in a box -- so your sandwich isn't squashed when you get to your destination -- it's the little things sometimes that make a big diff. I work nearby, so this is often the default lunch place. VERY up and down. The food is pretty consistently decent, but the espresso drinks vary wildly depending on who's mixing . . . the owner does a good job, but the staff turnaround is high, and I don't think they are trained well. There was one guy who always had everything cleaned up and ready to close 10 minutes before they actually closed - he was really grumpy when I would then show up, and he'd then have to make me a latte and clean up again . . . I really had more hopes for this cute coffee shop. I have been there dozens of times and unless I get a simple iced coffee, latte or pastry, I am very disappointed. I don't think it is so much the people that work there, but instead the ownership. There always seems to be a help wanted sign in front; therefore, I can assume they are short staffed. This makes sense when you have to wait an insane amount of time for a toasted bagel and given to you by employees that never smile. The food is mediocre to say the best. This review would be zero stars if possible. I work next door, and know that the staff here is incredibly unfriendly and usually don't come in here for that reason. Sameera is particularly rude and often appears depressed. Today, after having food poisoning and being unable to eat for a few days, I went in to order toast. Sameera informed me, with a smirk, that they don't make toast. IT IS ON THEIR MENU as a side item to nearly every soup and salad they serve. My boss orders toast regularly. It is simple to make. They make toast. Needless to say, I will not be coming back and will encourage my colleagues and office to stop ordering from this restaurant. My first time here, dogsitting in the neighborhood, thought it would be nice to sit outside with the dogs and a mocha. Ordered a large mocha "for here" ($3.95). They put it in a paper cup. When I say to the barista "I asked for it for here" he shrugs as if to say "you can't sit here and drink it out of a paper cup?" but when I persist he grudgingly hands me a glass into which I transfer my mocha myself. When I get outside to drink it, I find that it doesn't taste of coffee and it doesn't taste of chocolate. It's an off-white color like it's 99% milk. I go inside, tell the barista I don't taste any coffee or chocolate, I get the same bored shrug. He hands me a plastic squirt bottle of chocolate to adjust the chocolate. I then ask him how many shots of coffee he puts in the large mocha, he says two. I ask him whether they use a South American coffee (which tends to be weak). His response is basically he doesn't know (and he apparently doesn't care). I ask what brand they use and he tells me. I say "I haven't been here before, wasn't sure what to expect. I'm used to Peet's Coffee which is very strong." By this point he's apparently so bored I don't even get a shrug. Wow, I feel all warm and fuzzy like a truly valuable customer after that experience. I had to clear my own table to be able to sit outside. Nobody cleared the pile of filthy dishes, napkins and cups off the table next to me the whole time I was sitting there. I really enjoyed my time at Cafe Francisco. I went there last week on a lunch date and had the Turkey Club sandwich. My date had the omelet and it looked incredible! I will say the cheese wasn't thoroughly melted in the omelet though. I had no problems with my sandwich. The atmosphere was bright and the tables spaced out with plenty of room if you wanted to bring your laptop in, which they provide free WiFi FYI. I definitely will be back here to study! read more

I'm glad to see other reviews about the unfriendly staff. I live close by and have only had 1 friendly experience from a staff member. Every other time I've been (which was pretty often) they look upset when I walk in the door and someone has to get up out of their seat to take my order. I've only ordered one food item - the yogurt with fruit and granola. They charged me $9.75 for an under average breakfast with maybe a spoonful of yogurt. I haven't ordered food since then. I will say I enjoy their coffee but I swear asking someone to make you a drink makes you feel like such a burden. Thankfully there is another coffee place around the corner with friendly staff so I will continue to just take my business there. Cafe Francisco - hire some happy girls or ones that don't give you glares when you walk in! Absolute breakfast bliss with a bevy of Bay charm. This cafe rivals any you might come across in the West Village in NYC, but without the inflated prices and inevitable pretension. I ordered a simple bagel sandwich, and was pleasantly surprised at how it was nearly indistinguishable from my fond memories of consuming bagels on Sundays in Florida and New York. Really terrible service, no one is happy or makes you feel welcome when you walk in. I ordered a pizza and they forgot to put my order in, my whole table received their food and I was still waiting. Finally told them I needed to take it to go, and they said they would bring it to me. 15 minutes later (it had already been a full 30 mins since I ordered) I went inside to check, and the man at the counter was just talking to one of the cooks, and holding my pizza. I got a very weak apology and was told I could grab some chips, which hardly could make up for the fact that I had lost so much time. read more

I am pleased that Cafe Francisco has free Wifi again, but maybe getting that perk comes with a cost. The coffee used to be very good, but nowadays it's not. The sandwiches are delicious, I had the Veggie and my friend opted for the BLT... He had originally wanted the San Fran (ran out of avocado), and then the Wild Turkey (ran out of mushroom spread), so he finally settled with a standard BLT. It was a little off-putting because it was lunchtime and not all that busy at the time... but shit, if I worked there, I too would snack on avocado and mushroom spread, not pointing any fingers though, just sayin.
