Before climbing the hills of Queen Anne neighborhood, I decided to get a little coffee boost at Cafe Hagen. It was my first time here. I got a love spell latte ($6.34 after tax) which is made of red velvet cake and vanilla notes; however it tasted just like a regular latte with a bitter aftertaste. The cafe gets a lot of sunlight and has a nice view of Space Needle. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The service is great. The bathroom is clean. Notes: They don't accept cash. I went to Hagen today -- oops oops, I meant to take a picture of my turkey bacon sandwich and pour over -- but I wanted to ask them about their dog policy after Meri's post here in November. I too have brought my dogs numerous times, having them hang out with me over lunch, but more often I swing by with them and pick up a coffee and head home. Sounds like having dogs in the cafe isn't okay any more, but doing a swing through or getting something to go is fine. Vita went through something similar last year and its baristas were then prohibited from playing with the dogs that came in... I don't know if there were some incidents or what. But! I found this coffee shop pretty standard in flavor but a little more expensive. I got a $7 seasonal drink (elderflower espresso tonic) which was elderflower syrup, fevertree elderflower tonic, and a shot of espresso. The espresso was a bit acidic for me and didn't complement the elderflower (and for context, I normally drink coffee black). By the afternoon they were also understandably running low on pastries so I did not try anything else. This place is just down the block from our house. I really, really wanted this to be my new place to sit and chill. When they first opened, they allowed our dog to come sit inside with us while enjoying their overpriced (not great) drinks and expensive but decent pastries. Recently we went in, ordered from the staff that greeted and treated our dog. I spent $14 on a pastry and an 8 oz hot chocolate. We went to sit and I was told our dog was no longer permitted inside. This is fine, I never make scenes about this stuff. But, they've always allowed him access. They then sent me outside into the rain and cold with a delicate pastry. They could very well have warned me that dogs are no longer permitted inside before serving me food that was obviously meant for consuming in the moment. My take is that they are catering more to the one-time guest who is visiting from out of town and staying at one of the nearby hotels. They don't seem to be concerned about building the neighborhood sense of belonging. When you don't have to worry about repeat business, it's fine if your coffee is burnt and you opt not to become a neighborhood fixture. I'm always super friendly to tourists and have been sending them to Hagen if I witness them looking for a place to grab breakfast. But, there are better places, with better food and drinks, that actually want to be part of our community. read more

Truly incredible pastries. The layers of dough are so flaky and amazing it justifies the price for me. Been back 4 times this week and have been impressed everyday until today. The blond lady who I'm assuming is the owner needs to take a customer service class. Every other employee is kind and welcomes to explain what drinks and food items are. The blond woman seems offended by each question or if you give your order slightly differently than she wants. My favorite employee seemed to be working the front counter all the other days I came in, taller guy with the most generous disposition. Also great to see the baking staff still going at it strong, even while the coffee shop is open. I was so excited to finally try Hagen Coffee Roasters this morning. They are owned by the same people as Cafe Hagen in SLU with the same Scandinavian hygge aesthetic. While the SLU location is more sit down friendly, this one is more focused on their fresh baked pastries, onsite coffee roasting, and grab and go. There are a variety of coffee, pastry, and food options. I got the maple bourbon latte which was flavorful and well balanced, up there for Seattle espresso standards. Overall super glad to welcome Hagen into the neighborhood. I see myself visiting often to grab a drink and a pastry to go with it. Come check it out! read more

Also got a sandwich but for $14 I'm not sure it's worth it. Total was $24 something for the two items with tip and honestly it was kinda a waste of money. It is very clean and nice aesthetic but that's about it. Service was mid, three employees but there were people waiting at the register for a while and no one was there or said anything to let them know what's going on. It's just ok.
