I am usually funny... but get real! This is definitely 5 stars. The thing about real Texmex is , that if you jazz it up too much , then it is too much! ( FOR SURE) even though a lot of people like that. not good. But if you get too traditional, ( tourist ) people don't like it... Melissa was a perfect bartender and treated this place like her own. Everything was just a little better. From the pulled chicken enchiladas with the sour cream sauce, brisket tacos with handmade corn tortillas made in house, best chips and salsa , and order the strawberry Frio margarita.... also a little different. The wait was extremely longer then we were told but watching them cook in the kitchen made us think it was worth the wait. After we finally ordered the food came out rather quickly all except my plate and everyone commented on it being Luke warm none of us was impressed. The food seemed like generic frozen enchiladas. The brisket was dry flavorless and cold. We did not complain to management but decided that is first and last. I had high hopes after I watched him cook fresh veggies and shrimp not sure who he was cooking for but it wasn't like that on any of our plates. Here i am late with my review again, but in my defense, i've been busy with all the convention stuff. I have seen Cafe Herrera for a couple of yrs now but never got the time to go eat there, til now. I came here for lunch twice while having to be at the convention center. I highly recommend the camarones enchiladas (shrimp enchiladas) $15. The shrimp had a kick of spice to it and the tomatillo sauce that was smothered on top was full of flavor. It's served with a side of rice and black beans, and free chips and salsa to start your meal. Brittany was our server and she was wonderful with the recommendations! My co-worker ordered the nachos with double beef and it looked tasty as well. During my second visit, I sat at the bar and the service from the bartender was less than stellar. I had to ask for utensils. I ordered queso to start and the kitchen staff that served me food had noticed that I was not served any chips and salsa, and went to get some for me. What stood out about my dining experience was the terrible service. We came in on a Sunday while our daughter was at a cheer competition. The wait to eat inside was 30 minutes so we opted to eat on the porch. We had to order from the bar because there are no servers on the patio. When we got to the bar one of the bartenders greeted us and asked another bartender if she could take our order. She said, "no, they can wait five minutes" then went and drank some of her ice tea. She wouldn't look at us and walked to the other end of the bar. Another bartender took our order. I ordered waters and he said they would bring water, chips, and salsa to our table once we sat down outside. The patio is nice, it's got a lot of room and some trees on it. The first thing that got to our table was the queso we ordered as an appetizer. The lady set it down and left, no chips or salsa? Then another person came out and gave us silverware. Then a third person brought the tortillas we ordered (still no water). The chips and salsa came but still no water. Our food came out but you guessed it still no water. I had the Ranchera it was good but nothing I would make a return trip for. My wife had some tacos. The el pastor was good but the shrimp taco "meh" her words not mine. I made it 3/4s of the way through my meal and still no water. My wife asked me if I wanted her to get me some but I said no. I had waited this long and was curious to see if it would happen at all. Several servers walked by us but none noticed we were without water. One even refilled our salsa but still brought no water. My wife got tired of my experiment and decided to get us water. By then I was nearly finished. The food wasn't bad but the service was terrible. The restaurant doesn't seem to be run well. Bad service, trash pilled up on the tables at the patio. I wouldn't recommend this place. The average food plus terrible service equals never eating here again. If your hungry for Mexican food it's worth a shot but good luck with the service. The food here is decent but I gotta mention one strange issue with the menu. Enchiladas POBLANAS | 13 house made guacamole / pulled chicken / arroz blanco The enchiladas came out with Mole sauce. We questioned the waiter since we didn't expect it and he said it is a "translation issue from house made guacamole to mole. The menu is wrong". He didn't mention it when we ordered, not did he offer to do anything about it. When we left I took a picture of the menu and the host just acknowledged the menu is wrong - and still is even on the website. No guac, just mole. read more

Ate here Saturday while at Fan Expo Dallas. They seemed to have not been prepared for the crowds. There were people all over coming in grabbing places to sit. I guess their bars and patio area were open seating. Tables inside weren't being snagged. You had to get on their wait list for a table. Waited about 30 mins for a table which is what we were quoted. The hostesses were very nice. So the food was really awesome. Best salsa I have ever had. I killed 2 bowls of it before the food made it out. It was A-Mazing! I got the Maple Ave plate. Had a cheese enchilada and tamale covered in chili con carne, a beef taco and rice and beans. I thought it was supposed to come with a bean tostada but I was A:too tired to care and B:too full to eat it by time I realized it wasn't there. But everything that was there was soooo good. The masa was right on the tamale. The rice and beans had great flavor. Just everything. So good. GF's brother had the brisket quesadilla. It was awesome. Great size to eat for your entree or share with others. Their menu looked like it had some really good selections. Price is great for a nice restaurant by the Omni. About $24 for all of that. Our waiter was a little on the pushy/ hurried and forgetful side. But I'm going to say it was because of how busy they were. If the place hadn't been a madhouse and service had been normal I would have given them 5 stars no doubt. Having visited twice, I so wanted to fall in love. On the lot of the Omni Hotel downtown Dallas, I had been a long time patron of Herrera's at the Denton cut off location, and found this spin off. Both visits the service is awkward when the large dining room is empty, and the food is missing spice. When visiting a Mexican restaurant and you order a house Margarita on two separate occasions, the drink should look and taste the same, there was a distinct difference. Visiting Dallas from California and this was one of the restaurants on the premises of our hotel (Omni). The food was great and the service was exceptional. I had a very frustrating experience with this restaurant today. I called at 1:05pm to place a to-go order. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. I walked to pick up my order and as I was almost at the restaurant, I got a call at 1:29 when my food was supposed to be ready only to be told that they have not even started on my order and if I wanted it, it would take an hour and a half before it was ready. Had a reservation here for OU/Texas weekend for over a month. Which I called and confirms 7-10 days out. 30 minutes before our reservation time received an email cancelling the reservation. Went 10 minutes early, they told us they were not taking reservations (or honoring reservations) - it was first come, first serve and order at the bar for drinks and at the counter for food. We waited 20 minutes to be seated. Drinks, chips and salsa were fine. Food was cold, not very good and the fajitas that were ordered came out after everyone else had finished their meal. No apology, nothing! The waitstaff was working as hard as they could - this was management's problem. This is not a new restaurant - they know what OU/Texas weekend is like. They failed to adjust. Opentable.com needs to take them off their website if they are not going to honor reservations. read more
