In Boston for my son's volleyball invitational and needed to stop for brunch beforehand. Looked up restaurants near me and 500 feet away was Cafe Landwer. What a blessing it is to randomly find a fantastic place to eat. The food was delicious, the tea refreshing, the staff welcoming, and the atmosphere cozy. Our waitress, Makenzie P, was super sweet and attentive! Although the adorable table was a bit small, the two of us were able to fit all of our plates, cups, and other items on it. Cafe Landwer is always packed on the weekends, but dinners are much more chill. People are missing out on this as a great dinner option though! I ordered the vegan meatballs and the roasted cauliflower appetizer. The meatballs themselves were a little dry, but paired well with the sauce and rice. However, I think the star was the cauliflower. A giant head that is roasted until a knife cuts through it like butter, on a bed of creamy tahini and fresh diced tomatoes. The only thing that would bring this over the top would be a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds for some crunch, but it was a perfect appetizer as well as side to the meatballs. My friend had the falafel pita and also thoroughly enjoyed it, saying the pickled veggies served alongside were typical of Persian food she grew up eating. I ate here and was really happy with my food and service. We ordered vegan items, and had many choices (there are plenty of omnivore's food too). We ate hummus with mushrooms and caramelized onions on it (you can order hummus plain, but we were curious. Ir was very good. The pita was warm and fresh and fluffy. I also had the lentil soup. It was excellent. I asked for it extra hot--and they complied nicely. We also shared the vegan Shawarma on Focaccia bread, and eggplant with tahini, and they were both excellent. I was really excited about Cafe Landwer and was pleasantly surprised by the menu; I didn't expect it to have so many Mediterranean/Middle Eastern influences! I got the Souk Hummus bowl (falafel, olive oil, and paprika). I liked the hummus texture but something for me was off in flavor; it had a bitter aftertaste. That being said, the warm pita made up for everything and made worth continuing to dip back into that hummus! The Boy got Landwer's Pancakes. The pancakes actually beat out my bowl. They were a nice fluffy stack, came with a plentiful variety of fruit, warm gooey nutella, and fresh whipped cream! Delightful - some pieces of pita may have slipped their way into that great nutella. Service though left something to be desired. It feels like they shoved one too many tables in there and there are some ill-placed beams that can make it tight for people to move around, especially servers. We felt a little neglected (unfilled waters and a long time trying to get the check). Since we live so close I'm sure we'll give Landwer another whirl - give the dinner service a go - but we're not in any rush. read more

I've had bad service in my lifetime but yesterday's was so incredibly bafflingly horrible that it left us scratching our heads. We were seated promptly yesterday for brunch. It took a while for our server to come by and take our order. No worries...it's Sunday brunch. Finally, we got our water and she took our order. We sensed she was new because she did seem nervous but she meticulously repeated our orders back to us, so I felt some relief. A manager came by after we had gotten our waters but before we got our drinks. How is everything, he asked. We'll, it's water and that's life-sustaining so fine, I guess? The trouble started with the drinks. Reminder, the server had meticulously and accurately confirmed our entire order back to us as we ordered. So where was my son's espresso, where is the cream for my coffee and who does that cappuccino belong to? It was pretty hard to convince our server that the cap was not ours. I spied her trying to deliver to a couple other tables and literally standing in the middle of the room bewilderedly looking at her POS (point of service, not the other) device. My son didn't get his espresso until after the meal after asking 3 different times. I never got the cream, but hey...I can spare this extra calories. Next the food. Nothing special from a quality perspective. But again major confusion. A gentleman came over and delivered 3 of our 5 entrees. He had an extra falafel sandwich that didn't belong to us and neither version of the eggs Benedict that the girls ordered. What did you two order? They told him. He disappeared. We waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. After 12 minutes those of us with food started to eat at the insistence of those without. Our server came by, completely oblivious, how is everything? Two people had no food in front of them and she is asking how is everything? Well, we still don't have the eggs Benedicts, the espresso, or the cream for the coffee...can you maybe check on this? Finally, the other entrees arrived after the rest of us had eaten. (See picture.). Here's the best part... the server came by to explain that the Benedicts were delayed because of a smashed potato supply chain issue or something and would they like to substitute? Um...look at the table...their meals were finally delivered. This was so odd and baffling. Was there any apology? No. Was there any service recovery...like let me take those off the bill or get you free drinks or anything? No. Was the server even aware of how disastrous this meal was? No. We paid the check and left a decent (18%) tip because this woman was clearly clueless and in over her head with a station too big to manage. It's the management that should be ashamed. As we left, the manager said have a nice day. Didn't ask about our dining experience at all. We won't be back. read more

Nasty food with nasty service. I was sat by the hostess and then was IGNORED by the server. Completely. It was a Tuesday morning and they were not that busy. The server just looked at me and did not serve me at all. I had to order from takeout and then sat at my table. When my food was brought out I was not provided with any utensils, the same server that ignored me said he would get utensils for me after bringing me my food, I then proceeded to see him greet multiple tables, take orders and ignore me again for utensils. I don't want to say race played a factor but it sure seemed like it, as I was the only black person there and the only person being ignored. By the time I got utensils my food was cold and nasty. It was a terrible experience and honestly not worth what I paid. Not once was I asked how my food taste, if I needed anything else, nothing. I was not serviced here. It made for a completely uncomfortable and isolating experience. I would be weary of this when visiting this specific Cafe Landwer as they may not be black friendly. I have mixed feelings about this place but I will say the food was incredible. I wasn't thrilled by the service. We ordered drinks and food and the drinks came out much later than the food after we had asked to have our drinks first to sip on while we waited. We had a small table for 2 and since we knew we were ordering a lot, we asked if we could be moved to a larger table since we saw a few available and they said no, they were reserved for reservations.. meanwhile we did have a reservation.. we wound up having to put food on the FLOOR because there wasn't enough space on the table. As we were leaving I went to the to go counter to order pita and hummus to go. I waited about 10minutes for someone to come over and help me. Multiple servers/workers walked by me and no one stopped to take my order. After I ordered 4 pieces of pita I then waited 25minutes for it to be ready. Unfortunately, the bad service took away from the amazing food. We tried a little of everything and wow it was delicious! The pancakes were on the dry side, so we didn't love those, but the shakshuka, shawarma hummus, pita, falafel, and fresh bread were to die for! I'm Israeli, and I've eaten at Landwer locations both in Israel and this location in Boston. The quality of the food is identical, as far as I can tell. A few years ago, Landwer in Israel eliminated my favorite main dish from the menu - the chicken pesto pasta, but luckily it's still available in Boston. Please keep the chicken pesto pasta on the menu! I recommend the Lotus Rosalach for dessert. It's freshly baked pastry (like rugalach) with Lotus Biscoff cookie spread for the filling. We came in on a Tuesday for a late lunch and the cafe was filled with people but not overly crowded. WHAT WE ORDERED: -Chicken Sandwich: IT WAS PINK ON THE INSIDE. My friend only ate 1/4 of the sandwich before realizing it was still raw. We told the waitress about it and she just stared at us awkwardly before taking the plate and said, "I'll see what we can do". What's worse is my friend felt sick after our lunch and had to call the restaurant to speak to the manager about what happened that day. We're normally not confrontational people but the raw chicken+ rude waitress+ upset stomach felt like something we had to bring to the manager's attention. -Souk Hummus Bowl: the only really delicious part of our meal. The pita was fresh and the spices in the falafel were excellently done. Would recommend -Sinia Kebab: the lamb and beef slices were very flavorful but the entire dish kinda just felt like a hodgepodge of stuff thrown on top of a pita. This is a really bright and cute place- great to get brunch with friends at (especially if you're a college student who lives around the area). They also have a great vegan selection! I wish I came here more often so that I can try all of them. Having said that, the one time I went here I got the veggie burger. This was a good veggie burger. I can't pick out what they put in it but it gave it a satisfying, meaty taste. The patty was a little dry though, and I wish they used a more flavorful sauce. This is the first brunch spot I tried in Boston and it was absolutely amazing! This definitely set the bar for brunch spots very high and it might become my go to spot for brunch here. I came here with a friend hoping to get brunch but their breakfast menu looked really good so we got the vegan breakfast and shakshuka. The vegan breakfast cafe with omelette, several different kinds of spreads and egg bread (which they call pita). The egg bread was soft, warm and freshly baked which made the spreads taste ever better. My favorite spread was Tahini and guacamole but all of them were very flavorful and they gave a lot of spread, it could have been shared by two people. I wish they gave two pieces of bread or a bigger piece to go with the huge amount of spread. They charge $2 for the extra bread which is worth it tbh. The omelette was delicious too (although a bit on the soggy side). The shakshuka was equally delicious, the egg yolk oozed when I cut through the shakshuka which means it was baked to perfection and the texture was perfection. My favorite drink was the mint lemonade, very refreshing! I highly recommend this place, go check it out, it makes for some Instagram worthy food pics and absolutely delicious meal. read more

The fries were a little too salty, but hey, fries are supposed to be that way. The coffee could've been better; too watery for my taste but I might've gotten the last of the pot. The other drink I got was their fresh squeezed apple juice and I was a little off-put that they used green apples. The staff was kind and the food came out quick, A efforts all around. All in all, I don't think I'll come back here. For me, things were too pricey, the menu had too many varying options, and I felt like this restaurant doesn't really have a solid identity.
