My friend and I literally stumbled into this place after a hike at Kenneth Hahn State Park. We were tired and hungry, but did not know what food was in the area. Yelp led us to Cafe Laurent and we were lucky it did (good job Yelp fam!). We sat at the counter and enjoyed hot cups of coffee and rich indulgent breakfast food at reasonable prices. Venice has no shortage of cafes to choose from, and in living here I've come to have very high expectations for brunch. I've probably tried most of the area's options, from the mediocre-yet-somehow-popular places like Urth Cafe and Superba, to the more solid options like Bluestone Lane and Zinque. Cafe Laurent stands out from the rest, and is the only place where I can be a regular for these reasons: 1. Unique - most cafes fall into two buckets. In bucket A are the options prepared the same way at every other restaurant. Boring. In bucket B are the restaurants that try too hard to be creative, and in doing so compromise the taste of their menu options. Not only is Cafe Laurent creative, but all the flavors and textures in their dishes complement each other. To the extent of my knowledge, you won't find this type of uniqueness and execution elsewhere. 2. Consistency- I've eaten here enough times to be able to expect that whatever I order will be good, every single time. The food is always well prepared. Super cute little spot. There was some construction going on across the way so it was annoying but stopped midway through our meal. The server was really kind and helpful. They don't serve alcohol but you can BYOB it's a $5 fee and $10 carafe of orange juice. I ordered the Paris sandwich I think it as called with gluten free bread it came with avocado cheese bacon and scrambled eggs with fruit and potatoes. The potatoes aren't to my liking it had a milky taste to it and I don't drink milk but my partner enjoyed them. The fruit was really fresh. My partner ordered the special breakfast with turkey sausage and turkey bacon. The turkey sausage was dry and reminded me of Jimmy Dean sausages that get cooked too long in the microwave. The turkey bacon was nice and crispy. I also got a "macchiato". I put it in quotes because it was 2 shots of espresso with foam I got it with almond milk then added 2 raw sugars and it was good. We will definitely return. I only gave 4 stars due to the wait of getting our bill but everyone that worked there was really nice. read more

It's pretty nice to know that we have this wonderful cafe in Culver City. No frills, no gimmicks. Just good food with good vibes. This French Cafe has a good mix of menu items! Yes, you had your traditional French brunch dishes like crepes and quiches, but then you had dishes that you may not be too quant with like Pain Perdu and Croque Madame. My friend ended with a quiche with salad and potatoes while I committed to the Croque Madame with the side salad and potatoes. We even shared the La Suzette Crepe. The Croque madame was delicious. I ordered it with the wheat bread which was somewhat disappointing. The wheat bread that was used wasn't that special. It was just your standard sliced supermarket loaf so when the sandwich came out to the table, I was "thats it?!" I wished it was on a country loaf or a heartier piece of bread. The sandwich wasn't an overall disappointment. The addition of avocado was nice and the bechamel has good flavor! The bechamel isn't smothering the sandwich because if it did, I think the bread will fall apart if that were to happen. The crepe was awesome. Shhhhh...don't let the word get out that this is one of the best brunches on the west side! Very affordable and REAL French food, cute indoor dining room like a Parisian cafe, and a large patio enclosed in colorful umbrellas with live jazz on the weekends. The croissants were definitely the best I have had in the U.S. They were light, moist, a little flakey with a delicate butter flavor, not heavy, dry and oily like a lot of American croissants are. The dough was also a little springy. It was very similar to what I have eaten in Paris. When dining with friends this past weekend, I ordered the breakfast sandwich on a croissant which was very large for only $10 and included potatoes au gratin (amazing!) and a small cup of fresh fruit. My friend ordered an almond and chocolate croissant which was as good as what you would find at a great French bakery. We could see them disappearing quickly in the display case behind our table...and knew that the pastries were a must order before they were (likely) to sell out. We also got the pain perdu (French toast) which was very different in that it was almost like a thick pancake, not just slices of pre-made toast drowned in egg, syrup and sugar. The triple berry muffin was nice, but nowhere near as good as the French pastries. I need to try the pain au chocolat next time I am here. They give you complimentary baguette with strawberry preserves to start. They also have sweet and savory crepes and freshly made quiche! They also have omelettes (and a free latte with omelette purchase when checking in on Yelp) but I would stick to the French stuff because they do it so well here. I can't wait to return. I just came from Brunch at their new Venice Blvd. location and I was very pleased. I was welcomed warmly by a very pleasant gentleman in a stylish jacket and offered my choice of seats. I finally chose their charming enclosed and well-heated patio. The charming gentleman showed me a very nice menu with many delicious options. He really took his time and I really appreciated his attention. When the food came it was fresh and delicious. The eggs were fluffy and the sausage savory...I should also mention that the portions were very generous. My companion had to ask for a take-home box, but I ate every yummy bite! Perfect outdoor patio for dining al fresco on a gorgeous Sunday morning. The only thing I didn't spot was a water feature which I can totally live without. We arrived and put our name on the list and were told there would be a 15min wait, wandered around the park for about 6min and our table was ready. This spot is super cute and the menu was massive. I ordered the nutella crepe which was sooo yummy! and tried a bite of the (l'atlantique) smoked salmon omelette with cilantro, cream cheese and caramelized onions. This omelette is sooooo good and comes with a nice potatoes au gratin style potato option on the side. You'd be doing yourself a favor to order these two items and go halfsies as they'd be the perfect sweet and savory combo. I'd definitely return in the future to try other menu items, as they have just about everything - pancakes, french toast, crepes, omelettes, quiche etc. for a girl who loves a french brekke this place is the pure joie! I really wanted to like Cafe Laurent. The building looked cute, had good reviews and I love French focused foods. Sadly, I was greatly disappointed and won't be returning. Today, I was the only person eating. My friend got a tea. I ordered the Le Jambon Buerre and a freshly squeezed orange juice. Firstly, the orange juice was ordinary, without pulp and could have been from a box. Secondly, the sandwich was terrible! At $18, it was built with a tasteless cold baguette, one piece of bland Swiss cheese, one piece of ham and mayo...and with butter? And no cornichons. The waiter charged me $2 for raw onions instead of the caramelized onions it was supposed to have. Why wouldn't he tell me of that charge upfront? And why did they give me one strand of raw onion for $2?? Also Swiss cheese isn't really French. Perhaps they should try Gruyère or something else more authentic. The salad and French fries were unremarkable as well. When I asked for mustard, they gave me yellow mustard. Hey Cafe Laurent owners, why be so cheap to your customers? Why not offer Dijon?? When I received the bill of $34, I balked. Was not worth it, at all. Truly a pathetic meal. Go to Cafe La Provence on Olympic for a very good French ham and cheese baguette sandwich. Despite its simplicity, their sandwiches are warm, crunchy, divine and remarkably delicious...and less expensive with more authentic French meat and cheese. I don't write Yelp reviews unless I feel really strongly about something. I cannot stop thinking about the french toast from Cafe Laurent. And the weekend brunch item, appropriately called, "Fancy Brunch." First off, the french toast is a twist on toast, in that it's more like a pancake of croissant bits smashed together on the griddle, with surprise fresh berries inside and sprinkled with a light dust of powdered sugar. I don't know what exactly makes up this concoction and I don't need to know -- it's delicious. It's so well paired as a side to the Fancy Brunch, which is an egg frittata sandwiched in a croissant, buried in a yummy hollandaise. Atmosphere of the outside courtyard is lovely; there's colorful tiles instead of a parking lot beneath your feet. The waiters we got had been working there for years, suggesting they know what's up. My recommendation is to get there early on weekends because the brunch line can get long. There's usually street parking right across the street on Overland. Enjoy! read more

Asked about the associated pancakes vs. "french toast", our waiter recommended the latter. Ooh la la. Not to be missed. By any American standard, french toast it is not. A mix of strips of yesterday's croissants with cranberries, raisins, milk, and eggs. Offered with syrup, but why??? Perfect without. Butter if you must, but also largely superfluous. The Shrimp Crepe menu item contains a serious noun-adjective misplacement. Large, luscious, perfect shrimp with, oh yeah, some crepe around them. Don't get me wrong. The crepe was quite good. But hardly the main element of this not-so-little bit of artwork. The Breakfast Paris Sandwich was also quite good. Minor complaints: Potatoes Gratin were fine but forgettable and the side of cut fruit was a bit past its time of cutting. But in the broader, delicious, scheme of things, those were entirely unimportant. read more

Cafe Laurent is wonderful! I had to be careful because my crazy sister has taken me to a few French cafes on the West Side and they were all bland. This place checked all the boxes. Thanks, Sis! Terrific food--check. Large potions--check. Outdoor dining: Plenty. Sidewalk tables in front. Hard to do in Los Angeles because of all the traffic but here it works. Venice Blvd. has undergone a revitalization for the bicycle crowd. The sidewalk was already a little wider than normal, then the protected bike lane, then a line of parked cars. The traffic is a decent distance from the tables. I heard from my weirdo sibling they have a patio out back which I'll never visit cause I want the boulevard traffic to see me with my cool vintage Peugeot bicycle locked to the parking meter, a Can-Can girl on my lap while I smoke a nasty Gauloises and drink Italian coffee. (girl not included). Serious questions: Why doesn't everyone in Los Angeles dine outside every day? Isn't that why you moved here? And...Why are you driving your car here? The changes to Venice Blvd are fantastic! Get on your bike and you won't feel guilty about ordering those creamy French deserts. Cute little cafe in Culver City. This cafe is located on the corner of a block across the street from a huge park. Take note to stroll on over after your next park day. I came here on a Saturday with my husband and dog around 11 am. We snagged a sunny seat on the back patio after waiting for 10 mins. Not bad! The back patio has artificial turf for my dog settled in and soaked up the rays while we dined. We ordered a single shot latte, omelet with Brie cheese and a sweet crepe with Nutella and bananas. All items tasted fantastic and service was top notch, to boot! I'm glad that we split the two entrees between the two of us. The sweet and savory combo was just right. I wish they offered a water bowl for my dog but that's obviously not an important detail. I also tried to redeem the Yelp check in offer for my free latte with a purchase of an omelet but the waiter said they stopped offering that years ago and then later said it is available on weekdays. Not a big deal for him to say it's not valid, but he did make me feel bad for asking about it. Just a heads up I'm case anyone else tried to redeem the offer. I'd come here again for the great patio.
