    Menu old school

I found this wonderful place on the phantom gourmet you tube web site. As soon as I watched the video history about the cafe I was hooked. Make sure you bring cash. No credit cards had to got the atm and withdraw money. The food was awesome I had a 10 inch pizza with pepperoni and sausage which was fantastic . My daughter had vodka and sausage spaghetti dish with meat. The ambiance was south Boston full of great Boston working class people talking about their everyday lives . It was really refreshing and come early the place is tiny . The food does come fast and furious but you may have to wait some time if you come during a busy time. I almost forgot they serve you up some delicious bread and olive oil as appetizer. So if you find yourself in Boston stop in at Cafe Porto Bello definite cult classic of Boston.

Best Italian food in Southie! Favorite place to go. The Pollo Alla Richie is my favorite. Great for takeout but also good to sit. Very intimidate. Limited seating; it's a small place. Cash only

This place is the real deal. Get the eggplant parm appetizer, you will not be disappointed. Chicken parm also delicious. Server has been amazing every time I've been there, so friendly and very knowledgeable. Hot take... I love that it's cash only!! My new favorite restaurant.

Of everything my daughter missed, there was one dish she talked about more than any other: the Penne Gorgonzola at Carmelina's. Not friends. Not the Red Sox. Not even Boston itself. The penne. We recently returned to work the Feast of Saint Joseph, and before we unpacked, before we did anything else, our first meal had to be at Carmelina's. The look on my daughter's face after that first bite was worth the trip. She ordered her long-awaited Penne Gorgonzola. I stuck with my longtime favorite, the Brasato. Then the friend we brought along ordered the Bolognese Fettuccine, and despite repeatedly calling it "bolo-ga-knees" and bleeding my ears, accidentally introduced me to my new favorite dish on the menu. The addition of whipped ricotta completely changes the bolognese, adding a richness I never knew it needed. We finished with limoncello, a very happy daughter, and the best kind of dinner bill... ...one paid by someone else. Is there a better ending? Eight years later, Carmelina's is still my favorite restaurant in Boston and comfortably sits among my top five restaurants anywhere in the country.

Unfortunately, the customer service during our second visit was a complete disappointment. We arrived around 5:00 p.m., and the restaurant was only about half full. From the start, the service from an older waitress was rude enough that we almost walked out. I had forgotten my reading glasses at home and was having trouble reading the small print on the menu, so I looked at the menu displayed on the wall instead. The waitress suddenly took the menu from our table and repeatedly pointed to the paper menu, insisting that I use it instead. I explained that I couldn't see the small print, and only then did she drop the issue. When our food arrived, it felt like it was simply dropped on the table with no warmth or courtesy. We also witnessed another waitress respond to a customer who was unsure where they were seated by saying loudly, "Do we need to put up directions?!" in a sarcastic and embarrassing tone. It's unfortunate because the food is genuinely very good. However, no meal is worth being treated this way. There are many great Italian restaurants in Boston, and next time we visit, we'll be choosing one of them.

The restaurant was not busy at all - it was Sunday evening and snowing out, plus the Pats were playing....anyways, the greeter-seater was friendly and sat us at a table by the window. We were so glad that we did because it was excellent. Before I get into food, I want to comment on the amazing level of service that we received. The manager on Tuesday night who seated us and oversaw the restaurant did an amazing job. He has taught his people well. We really enjoyed the excellent service we received from Markus. He was so kind, patient and provided great recommendations. We also thought Juanes did a great job serving us at breakfast. He noticed that my avocado toast had onions and knew I said no onions. He took it back immediately and had it corrected. That's excellent service. Now to the delicious food... The Avocado Toast with feta was the best one that I've ever had. It was so fresh and delicious. You could tell it was all fresh ingredients. I loved the fontina cheese in the Gnocchi alla Bava. It was so creamy and delicious. Some of the lobster that I added was good and others were a little fishy which was too bad. The Saffron Risotto was so creamy and other worldly. We loved it. It paired nicely with my husband's NY Strip Steak which was so tender and flavorful. He loved it and I loved trying it.

Portions are just right in my opinion. Everything tasted fresh. Started arancini and bruschetta - both were tasty! Chicken parm with house-made pasta hit all the right notes. Shrimp scampi was very good, not overly garlicky, good size shrimp. Chicken risotto came with a generous portion of risotto and chicken cutlets in a marsala sauce. Saved room for dessert amazingly, and couldn't pass up the cranberry bread pudding, which was fantastic. Perfect balance of sweet and tart, with vanilla gelato to tie it all together. Will definitely return in the future to sample other menu items.

When we first arrived, the restaurant was fairly quiet. As we settled in, though, there was a steady stream of people stopping in for drinks, and by the time we were leaving, the place had noticeably filled up. The crowd seemed to be mostly locals, and I got the sense that many of them were regulars working their way through the menu one visit at a time. That's always a good sign. We started with a salad that was beautifully prepared. It wasn't overdressed, just lightly tossed with a delicious vinaigrette that let the ingredients shine. For our mains, the chicken parm was excellent--crispy, flavorful, and comforting without feeling heavy. The gnocchi was equally impressive. The dumplings were tender and pillowy, and the pesto tasted incredibly fresh, as if it had just been made that day. It's a simple dish when done well, and this version was done very well. I'd order it again and again.

The philosophy here is simple: handmade pasta, fresh seafood, and the kind of lively trattoria energy that makes you feel like you wandered into something real rather than something staged for tourists. We walked into a small, intimate space that feels authentically old North End, with street level seating and a downstairs dining room that fills up fast on most nights. The energy when it gets loud and busy only adds to the warmth of the room, making the meal feel more fun rather than overwhelming. If you are looking for a quiet, candlelit dinner, timing your visit carefully or requesting a window table upstairs is worth doing. The vibe otherwise is bustling and inviting, the kind of place where the noise level actually enhances the experience. The pasta is where things really shine. The truffle mushroom ravioli is outstanding, the kind of dish that stays with you, and the lobster diavolo has real depth and kick to it. The seafood plate, loaded with scallops, shrimp, sea bass, salmon, lobster, and calamari over fettuccine alfredo, is a serious undertaking in the best possible way. The zucchini flowers are delicate and worth ordering if they are available. Bread comes to the table, and the drinks are solid. On the flip side, some of the simpler pasta dishes can feel under seasoned compared to the more composed plates, and the pricing reflects the neighborhood, so you are not walking out cheap. Service is generally warm and attentive, with a mix of staff that has that authentic Italian restaurant feel. The pacing moves at a good clip, sometimes a little fast, but the energy of the room makes it work. For a North End dinner that delivers on homemade pasta and fresh seafood without trying too hard to be anything other than what it is, Trattoria Il Panino is a solid pick. Reservations are a good idea.

The sauce, as friends mentioned to us was very good, ravioli tasty and meatballs good. What was great was the bread, but three small slices!?! The piccata was over lemonade ( a new word) and to many capers, chicken not as tender as it should be and pasta not al dente. It was OK and it was packed and the bar looked fun. We probabldented. explore other places before we try again. I just expected more than Ok and that's probably why "disapointed".
