This place has been a "to-do" list for far too long. The decor is very colorful and campy! Very likable. I can see what all the interest is finally. Another cold rainy day in Bellingham and this little jewel was calling to have something different. Got the Rotisserie chicken sandwich. Warm and some kind of a mayo sauce mixed with the chicken and other items. From the first bite, it was pretty good. You can taste the care they put into making it for their customers. I had the salad with their balsamic vinegar also. Just packed with flavor and super fresh. Fresh and delicious! Had the quinoa bowl with yams and caramelized onions alongside a cup of coffee. I stayed in Peru a few years ago and was excited to find a rare Peruvian restaurant while on a visit to Bellingham. I didn't disappoint! The coffee had this wonderful chocolate flavor (I regret not buying a bag!) and the quinoa was nicely spiced. (Bonus, the bathroom was really clean!) Will definitely stop here again when we're in town. read more

The sandwiches were so good and big. We tried three different sandwiches (sorry forgot the names) and they didn't disappoint. The only thing was it's a bit expensive. We ordered three sandwiches and one French toast and we paid around $77. I'm not use to paying that much for lunch but I would go again for a date night instead of a family day haha. read more

LOVE this gem of a cafe! I was originally drawn to this place from the photos of deliciousness posted by other Yelpers...no false advertising here, the sandwiches are SUPERB! My favorites are the Choripollo and the Pollo A La Brasa, served with side of roasted potatoes and a refreshing Chicha Morada (juice with cloves & cinnamon) and you will be more than satisfied! I have a feeling anything you try will be great here. We had tried to come to this place few times but each time we came they were closed for various reasons. This time was a charm. The food is actually pretty good. All three of us ordered #4 on the menu. The sandwiches are pretty flavorful and the customer service was good. It took a while to get our foods. The major challenge is that the napkin holder was not being used as it was designed, so getting napkins out was as hard as pulling teeth. read more

Today I had one of if not the best sandwiches I've ever had. I ordered the #5 and it has the perfect mix of flavors, with the creamy egg yolk, the stringy mozzarella, the garlicky green chimichurri sauce, the crunchy lettuce, the yummy pork and the final crunch from the shoestring potatoes! Oh my, I highly highly recommend this sandwich! The potatoes that come with the sandwich were perfectly cooked and the spicy sauce is delicious! I also ordered a side of Choclo and the mix of corn, sauce, onions and feta just works, and definitely recommend trying it out! Don't listen to all the white chickens calling this heaven on earth just because there is more than mayo and ketchup. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich and had excellent time with the staff. It will take a while to get your food here. 20 minutes or more has been the norm for my visits. Don't care. The sandwiches are amazingly good and totally unique. You won't find anything similar in Bellingham. Incredibly spiced meat topped with a variety of fresh veggies like Peruvian peppers and unique sauces and slaws. So much good flavor! Sandwiches come with salad or potatoes - but don't expect French fries and chopped lettuce. The potato wedges are served in a spicy sauce and the salads are made with care and very flavorful. Had a great couple of sandwiches here, the butifarra with egg and pollo with bacon, avocado, and other deliciousness ($11.50 each). We tried both the salad and potatoes as sides. While the sandwich was easily one of the best I've ever had, the price was a little steep for the size (large palm size) and the potatoes were rather underwhelming even with a creamy spicy cream sauce. Went there for the first time with my boyfriend just a couple weeks ago and meant to write review. I ordered one of their specials it was chicken and carnitas and my boyfriend ordered one of the usuals I believe number 4. We were absolutely happy to have tried it because it was delicious! The sandwiches were filling and you could taste every ingredient which I loved! A little messy but that's to be expected as the fill them up. We both had potatoes on the side and a sauce was given which I didn't like too much but it still was all great! Also excellent customer service when we said it was our first time they walked us through the whole menu and were patient with us deciding and any questions we had! Super friendly and nice! I love this place and I try something different every time. Their sandwiches are awesome and you can turn any sandwich into a salad. Today I had the quinoa bowl and it was delicious! You can get one additional item such as pork or chicken or vegetable that they have on hand. It comes with avocado as well as several sauces that make a wonderful flavor all together. I didn't take any pics because I was so starving and we were on our way to Mt Baker Theater for a show. However, the Peruvian style sandwiches were pretty darn good. My hubby ordered the #2 and I ordered the #4. The hot sandwiches were made to order, which made them taste great and made fresh ingredients stand out. The order comes with salad or house potatoes as options, I chose potatoes that come with spicy Peruvian sauce on them. I really loved the potatoes and would have liked more of them with the order. The potatoes seemed like boiled wedges, which I love, but I only got about 5 of them. I would recommend getting less sauce or sauce on side, as they were too drowned. Unless you like that show sorta thing. I gave 4 stars because their sandwich buns were too bready and not as fresh as other ingredients (chicken and other stuff). Either the bread was from day before or not kept sealed enough. Even with it being warmed up or toasted, it did not taste like a fresh bollio you'd get with a torta (MX style sandwich bread that's same shape). Should have been more squishy or soft on inside and crispier on the outside. The restroom also didn't smell good and could use an update of some sort. However, the customer service was good and staff was helpful... Which is one of the reasons for overall 4 stars. read more

I was really excited to try Cafe Rumba since I've been eyeing it for a few years. I ordered the Butifarra Royal as a salad plate instead of the sandwich, and a side of shoestring potatoes. When the food was ready, the waitress brought out my salad and said " we are out of potatoes but I brought you the sauce that goes with them" and she walked away. She didn't offer a substitute for the potatoes at all. I walked to the front and asked if I could at least get a side of bread since there weren't potatoes available to go with my meal. The people that ordered before me and the people that ordered after me received potatoes as a side? I watched multiple trays of potatoes come out. It was just an odd event to be dropped off your food and not offered anything else or compensation for paying for a full meal and only getting part of it. The salad was very good and I was unsure what to do with the sauce for my potatoes, but I sampled it and the flavor was good. read more

We weren't expecting to find a Peruvian sandwich shop in Bellingham, but Cafe Rumba was a charming little place and a great stop for lunch. If the parking situation weren't so abysmal, it would be just about perfect (but that's really Bellingham's fault, not the restaurant's). The cafe is pretty small, with a handful of tables, and you walk up and order at the counter. They have a variety of meat and veggie sandwiches, soups, and sides. My dining companion was extra-hungry and got the Butifarra Especial (house-roasted pork, bacon, turkey, romaine lettuce, spicy gravy, salsa criolla, aji amarillo, $9). I got the vegetarian Peruano (yam, avocado, mozzarella cheese, roasted tomato, spinach, huacatay, aji amarillo, $8.50). All sandwiches come with a small side of potatoes in aji escabeche sauce, which is totally delicious! Our sandwiches were generously filled and served on a fluffy, soft roll. The portions are large and satisfying, ingredients all tasted fresh, and the pork was tender and juicy. We also tried a chocolate-dipped alfajor, which was super-sweet and rich, just like we remembered from Argentina! They are messy and best eaten with a fork, but a good size to share. There were only a couple of people working, so it takes a few minutes to get your food, but you can pass the time checking out the art, soaking up the ambiance, and browsing the Peruvian boxed teas for sale. They also brew Peruvian coffee and chicha morada, and you can get Inka Cola here if that's your thing. The only downside, as I mentioned, is the parking. There's no lot, and the lot that LOOKS like it should be for this strip mall actually belongs to the building across the street (and you have to go over and sign in to prove you have business there, so you can't just park there). Every inch of curb in Bellingham is metered and they only take coins, which is a huge pain and forced us to drive around for a while in search of legit parking. Annoying! A fun and friendly place to get a cheap lunch for under $10! And they apparently offer salsa dancing lessons and cocktails in the evenings, so that's yet another reason to come back. read more

Under no circumstances should you try to eat this anywhere other than at a proper table with a roll of paper towels. You need two hands to hold these overloaded gut bombs masquerading as sandwiches. But there is a direct correlation between the messiness and the tastiness. The Butifarra Royal was wholly consumed due to a combination of sheer gluttony and not physically being able to put it down without complete and utter disassembly. For a delicious Peruvian sandwich, come here. This is a gem located in downtown Bellingham. The decor is basic, and you order up front. They have about 10 different kinds of sandwiches, with a couple of salad choices as well. We got 3 sandwiches- the Asado de Res- beef pot roast with house marinara and carrots, the Pavo- grilled turkey breast, spinach, huacatay, and salsa criolla, and the Peruano- a vegetarian sandwich with yam, cheese, roasted tomato, avocado, spinach, and aji amarillo. The girl behind the counter also offered us a small sample of the chicha morada- a purple corn drink, and an agua de piña- pineapple water. I can see these drinks being refreshing during the summer. We grabbed a seat by the window overlooking the street. Water and utensils are self serve, and they bring the sandwiches to you. The sandwiches come with slices of potatoes with a aji cream mayo sauce. I really like them; they were a good complement to the sandwiches. I took a bite of the Pavo, and immediately fell in love. The bread was fresh- a little crisp on the outside, but soft on the inside. There was lots of turkey, and even though the salsa was a bit spicy, it went well with the whole sandwich. I took a bit out of the other two sandwiches. The Asado de Res is a hearty sandwich, flavourful and delicious. I really liked the yam in the Peruano, it's something different. Of course, to end the meal, I had to get an alfajore. Basically a shortbread cookie with dulce de leche sandwiched in between. It's what dreams are made of. I will definitely return to this place and try their other sandwiches, and of course, get another alfajore! read more
