Oh wow!! Sometimes the fella gets it so right it's scary! Today we had the cable guy coming out to install service at the new house, when we got there, the air conditioner was not working... we waited from 10 til 2 for the cable guy and were hot, cranky, and starving when we finally wandered out for food. We had 2 hours until the ac guy came so the fella suggested we head here as he had seen it mentioned on Reddit. We arrived at the restaurant easily enough, good parking in the back if the front is full, I would have appreciated that more if I weren't beyond hangry right then. We were greeted cheerfully as soon as we entered, and told we could sit anywhere. The restaurant was very clean and tastefully decorated. It was late for lunch but there were still a few other tables occupied. We ordered way too much food and topped it off with a very large dessert! Everything was absolutely delicious! Huge portions for the price as well. The cinnamon iced tea... I'd stop in just for that! We were checked on throughout the meal and the food arrived quickly from appetizer on through dessert, it's possible we looked ready to eat the table leg when we walked in... but I think they treat everyone this well. Drinks never dipped below half full, and the check was delivered after we had eaten, but before the food coma rendered us unable to move! All in all, this is a meal I won't soon forget! One reason to eat here is that it is native Tohono O'Odham owned and operated. The same family has a second Cafe Santa Rosa at the San Xavier Mission vendor building across the parking lot south of the mission, with the same food. A "popover" is also known as an "Indian Taco." Though not truly a long-time traditional food, many tribes have made made the fried flat disks of bread for a long time. They turn out brown and fluffy though not very thick. Allegedly originated by the Navajos while being held in a concentration camp in New Mexico in the 1860s, and being given little to eat except bug-infested flour, cabbage and spoiled pork, other tribes have been making this a traditional food as well. Corn tortillas are indigenous and eaten for thousands of years as well as beans and squash, all very healthy. Food and service were very good. Very friendly and helpful young native server. I was here before the pandemic and enjoyed it, so when I finally started going out to restaurants I was glad they were still open. The chips and salsa that arrives when you sit down are definitely homemade and perfect. The salsa has just enough spice to give a little "afterburner" but not enough to feel like your mouths on fire. My friend and I had a hard time choosing between red or green Chile tacos, so the waitress took care of everything. Before we knew it we had both red and green tacos and extra plates. I have eaten here a number of times since my first post. They have grown exponentially. They have added maybe 10-4 top tables to an adjacent space. Today they had adequate servers, the food came out quickly and hot and most importantly the flavor was consistently good just as I remembered it. This food is reminiscent of New Mexican style Mexican food influence by the Native American touch. I grew up with this food. It takes me back to some really good memories. Let's just say the flat enchiladas was so disgusting, these weren't the standard flat enchiladas more like a thick pancake of crap, with a side of the most bland squash and beans I've ever had in my life. The bean and cheese burrito was gross, the cheese quesadilla was so flat and the cheese was so non existent and no flavor at all. The only thing edible was the red chili the rest of the food absolutely sucked. Now let's talk about the prices for what you get, this place charges $12 for flat enchiladas what a rip off on a meal that costs maybe .50 to make. If you're gonna charge these high prices at least have awesome food. Each burrito was $7-8 dollars and they give you no chips or salsa, they offer Tabasco. Wtf! I used to like this place when they were on 12th, but they have screwed it all up and they won't last not with this type of food and service. Just wanted to give Cafe Santa Rosa a plug now that they moved into a new bigger space on South 6th. The food is still great and the service is still friendly and a little poco-a-poco. Just don't come if you are pressed for time. Sometimes it's a little slow, sometimes not, you just never know. Come for the tacos, stay for the squash. You won't be disappointed. Anything with their beans, red chili, or corned beef hash is always a winner. My favorite breakfast is the corned beef hash and eggs with beans and potatoes. I showed up and was hoping for some outdoor seating due to having my dog with me they have a space that could easily accommodate for outdoor seating but it looks like they designated that space for people to go out and smoke instead which is ashame. Later I checked and they do list that they don't offer outdoor seating so I admit that I should have checked that before but it's still sad that they have the space for it outside but don't use that space. I ordered some fry bread and the C8 menu item which was a rolled chicken taco, a ground beef taco and a ground beef and potato taco. The chicken taco was pretty tasty and the beef taco was mediocre but the beef and potato was pretty bad. I was disappointed first because I was expecting cubed potatoes or really anything other prepared potatoes and instead it was mashed potatoes and to make things worse there wasn't actually any beef whatsoever in the taco it was just mashed potatos and then the toppings that came with it which was really frustrating since I had discovered this after having left the restaurant since since I couldn't eat at the restaurant itself due I having my dog with me. The fry bread was also a disappointment. Most authentic fry bread that I've had is bubbly, crispy and dense. This fry bread had the bubbly and crispy down but there was almost no density to it . This is a tiny, bit quaint place in the south side. Meant to be a breakfast/lunch place... the main reason why I go is for the Indian Fry Bread. It is only brick and mortar place this far I have found that serves it and it is so good. Crusty on the outside, so soft on the inside, and really good toppings. I like to get the Indian Taco, which comes with all of the lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese, as well as a meat. My favorite, and the most popular at the restaurant, is the red chili. This is shredded meat in a red chili sauce... more rich with seasonings than with spice. They also give you a bottle of homemade salsa, not spicy, that you want to use the whole bottle on the Fry Bread so the bread is a vehicle to get the salsa in your mouth. The salsa is so good. The service is so, so. Servers and efficient and polite, though they are not out of the way nice. Sometimes they smile at you, but normally at the end when they ask you to come back.
