We have been a few times and out of those times the wait has been the same. To me when you have customers line-up out the door you really should take time and open a second register. This review should be getting lower stars just because of the wait but the staff, customers and the ambience makes this really a 5 star. The food and coffee are some of the best in Bakersfield. I had the Moroccan Eggs which were 2 over easy eggs in a spicy tomato sauce served in a pipping hot metal baking dish with toast points on the side!!!! WOW I could have dipped a entire baguette in this dish. It was out standing, had just enough spice to make you want to lick the bowl clean. My wife had the Peanut and Raspberry Jam toast without the coconut flakes. It was about 1 inch thick loaded with fresh peanut butter and what appeared to be homemade jam. I just got the regular coffee. Just to note they did make a huge improvement on this. Instead of just getting one cup you can now order a multi cup crafe. The Americani my wife ordered was long gone by the time the food arrived. If you wanted to order a seconded cup of anything with the exception of regular coffee you have to wait back in that line that will take you 15 minutes to order and another 15 minutes to get. In short if you don't mind to long wait in line and the long wait for your food. This place rocks!!!. read more

I've heard a lot of hype about this little cafe from friends so I thought I would check it out for myself! I went around noon on a Friday and was very impressed. The aesthetics are very cute and fitting for the cafe vibe. There was a lot of open seating when I got there--in the front of the cafe and the back area. I ordered an Almond Cafe Latte and a banana walnut muffin. The latte came with a small sugar cookie which was a delight. The latte itself was only decent, nothing really special. The banana walnut muffin was delicious, although I expected it to be a little warmed up because it was slightly stale. This place also offers many sorts of snacks and lunch items that I'd love to come back to check out some time. Smitten can also a good study place for students with well-lit seating areas and outlets. I was also able to get free wi-fi at the place and it's a nice area to get some work done if you don't mind the noise. All the workers that I interacted with were also extremely friendly. My first time visiting Cafe Smitten was almost a year ago when it first opened and I gave 4 star rating because I had a wonderful experience. So I am sad to give this review and where i would have given zero stars if possible because I really can't tolerate such rudeness displayed and by the owner himself!! Three of my friends (and my 3 month old baby!) and I hadn't all been together in almost 4 years and we picked Cafe Smitten for our reunion. It was a jammed packed Saturday so we had no choice but to sit next to the door to the patio, but it was warm enough until the servers insisted on keeping the door open when serving food. We asked if they could close it in between sending out the food and we were responded with rudeness that it wasn't possible. Then we asked to speak to the owner and he seemed to be completely inconvenienced with us demonstrated by his tone and attitude. Were we really asking something so unreasonable in Mid-January and with a newborn?? He was completely unfeeling and cold towards us which is so disappointing since the place was such a welcoming place till we met him! He kept the doors closed for us but after our encounter with him the atmosphere continued to feel "chilly". I worked in customer service for many years and never would have this type of behavior been tolerated. It's too bad such a lovely place has been ruined for us. read more

I have been to the one down town once. It was ok I thought I would give this one a shot since it's around the way from my house. I convinced my fiancé to come along he wasn't really interested but he finally gave in. When we arrived, we looked over the menu nothing look appeasing to him. He said "Well you can't mess up a burger" He ordered the burger and sure enough the burger arrived burnt!! He flipped the patty over and it was even more burnt on the bottom. Sent it back. They made another, this time it was not fully cooked. Like cmon! One extreme to the other. This is so disappointing. To top it off the gentlemen that started making my mimosa flight was also tending the register. He kept getting distracted when more customers walked in, he would tend to them. Which is good but he tended to about 5 customers before he remembered about my mimosa flight. Guess what? My mimosas were warm, and the orange juice mimosa was all juice. Overall a bad experience for us. Everything on the menu was super plain. Nothing had any protein except for the burger and a steak sandwich. they have two burritos one with no meat and the other is a vegan burrito... they might as well be both vegan. Came here with the expectation of good food and good coffee with only one of those being true. Sadly the food is all that I had enjoyed here. The Breaded chicken sandwich we ordered was juicy and the seasoning was good it just needed a bit of salt. The other sandwich being the steak sandwich which was the best out of the two full of flavor and exactly what I was expecting. We also had a brownie that was excellent full of chocolate flavor without being overly sweet. As for the coffee it was watered down and had none of the coffee taste to it. Wife picked me up this afternoon in order to visit Cafe Smitten - I wasn't. Read through the gushing reviews of this place and you might come to the conclusion that I am way off base with this review. It takes a lot to get me to pull the trigger on a one-star review but here is my thought process. This place is pretty nice. Tons of reviews tell me so and . . . I guess it is true. I was thinking the closest cultural comparison would be Austin. Let's start with the menu. If you like eggs and toast, you'll be fine here. Eyeing the menu for lunch I struggled to find something that would satisfy me. Everything looked so . . . organic. I asked about the tuna ($9)- thinking about the really good tuna steak sandwich ($7.25) available at Habit. The order taker at the counter described it well. It sounded good. I clarified if it was a filet, and she stated that it was "fresh crumbled". So I passed and got the Schnitzel ($10) instead. The wife got the Avocado egg-smash on toast ($10) - told you they have a lots of eggs. Both dishes were brought out with a simple but tasty mixed green salad with a balsamic vinaigrette. Mine was good, and so was my wife's. The staff was very pleasant. The place was clean and the food was good. So what's my problem? I'm getting old and crotchety I guess. When I order at a counter and someone brings me a plate 20 minutes later, why am I pushed to tip? There's a tip jar on the counter, my credit card transaction starts off with how much I want to tip and everyone there is making AT LEAST minimum wage. I'm tiring of tips in this day and age. Unless I'm eating at a sit-down restaurant and getting SERVICE I am not too sure what I am tipping for. I don't get tips for doing my job... Next, we're in Austin right? That would explain the disproportionate number of tables being held hostage by people on their laptops - ostensibly "working" on something important. Maybe they are all homeless students from UT? At the counter we have the uber-hipster couple (she, with her through-the-nose loop attempting to emulate the UT steer contingent and he, with his required man-bun). Behind the counter a barista pushed his beanie to the side while making himself some kind of mochalicious, half-frap double tap with a beautifully, artfully dripped stream of cream in the middle. Insert eye-roll here. I'm tiring of this place so I ask for a to-go box (since I ran out of time to finish my lunch on my 1 hour lunch hour) and a refill on my $3 "black tea". I was told "No free refills". Wow. OK. It's f'ing tea for God's sake. The margins at this place have to be "Yoooge" to quote our president. I love foo-foo food. I'm a foodie. But I have to draw the line somewhere, and I'm drawing it with Smitten. People go out of their minds in Bako if anyone serves something other than tacos and steaks. Originally I wanted to give this place two stars. I felt like they deserved it for the SUPER HIGH expectations I had going in after reading all the reviews; that as well as the prices they are charging and the weird menu. Let me remind you that the food was good. Are you still confused? I am too actually. I dinged them another star because I couldn't get 25 cents worth of tea without ponying up another $3. It's just not worth it unless you meet the criteria of customer I have listed above. I think I would say that my review is geared to someone like me. Everyone else can have this place. It works for them and that's great. But there's a subset of the population that will thank me for this review. read more

The cutest little shop ever for a place like Bakersfield. Their menu is unique and the store itself is super nice and homey. All the employees are super sweet and kind. The nightlife is also awesome. They sometimes have live music and it's a nice hangout spot to be with friends and drinking coffee or beer. Their matcha is a MUST!!!!! read more

I'm so happy that establishments like this are opening in my hometown! Locally run and owned restaurant-cafes are definitely a sign of investment into the community - and downtown could definitely use an injection of both business and energy. I really liked the space and vibe I got from Cafe Smitten: The interior is filled with tons of natural light but also warm and inviting. And the outdoor seating area was like an oasis in the asphalt and concrete desert that is Downtown Bakersfield. The staff was incredibly helpful and made great recommendations. I went with the iced green tea matcha latte which had the perfect combination of creaminess as well as some bitteress from the fragrant matcha. Being that it was a sweltering June morning, this was immensely refreshing. For my breakfast, I had the avocado smash which was excellent. I thought the chili flakes and homemade pickles helped cut through the richness from the avocado and egg. It's certainly one of the best avocado toast iterations in town. It's also nice to see places like this thrive. The good people of this city deserve tasty, locally-sourced, and above all, healthy food. I hope Cafe Smitten helps revive the downtown community and makes it flourish. I'm definitely rooting for their success! I can't wait to visit them again. read more

Only wish the dish had mushrooms and carrots but that wouldn't make it Moroccan. The dish came with two slices of toasted bread. Additional bread was a dollar so sop sparingly. The steak sandwich was tasty as well. FYI it's cooked well done so don't expect it to be medium rare. The steak was shredded as reminded me of a steak banh mi (viet sandwich). LOVE. A very strong word indeed. But I have to use this word when describing Cafe Smitten. Being an avid coffee drinker, this establishment is hands down my favorite in Bakersfield. I'm thinking of something to say about Cafe Smitten that hasn't already been expressed on Yelp and I Can't find one. This place is simply awesome. I admit that I do need to branch out and try a few more of their menu items, and in due time I will. The few items that I have tried have been delightful. The Moroccan eggs and avocado smash are an awesome pairing if I could make a recommendation to my fellow Yelpers. The coffee served at Cafe Smitten is great and gives you the perfect pick me up. The ambiance is something out of a big city like LA or San Francisco. I totally dig the look of Cafe Smitten as the decor and appearance of this place is super cool. I must admit that the outer paint color of Cafe Smitten (Blueish teal) has inspired some accent pieces that will be implemented at home.
