This was the second time I've been to this cafe. It's my nieces favorite restaurant to go to in Bakersfield. It has outdoor seating in the front and rear of building. Smitten has a uniquely cosmopolitan but "Bako" feel to it. I can tell that the owners put a lot into the aesthetic of this space. I had the mint lemonade and it was spectacular. There is much to like about Cafe Smitten. The owners have paid attention to every single aspect of a modern cafe experience. The design of the interior is modern, clean, and bright, the staff is friendly, and the menu offers unique items. We had a quinoa bowl, halloumi cheese, tomato bisque. Everything was delightful, fresh, and filling but didn't feel like a big weight in the stomach. I would say the halloumi cheese might be a bit salty if you're trying to watch out for sodium intake. While it was in the 90's, I still had to try my personal cafe's litmus test: a hot latte. The cup was delicious, at the perfect temperature, and crafted with a beautiful tulip. Kudos for even offering nice flatware. The utensils are comfortable to use and don't ruin the experience of great food and service often found at other places. Wanted to sit down outside on this beautiful Sunday afternoon and have my lemonade with mint and enjoy good company and try a new dish at Cafe Smitten. We ordered and I got my favorite the schnitzel sandwich and a salad but I also wanted to try the famous Moroccan eggs. So we got both and sat outside on the patio. Everyone is always so friendly here and the food was very good as always. The Morrocan eggs were very good and quite different from any other egg dishes I have ordered. The eggs are poached and simmered in this rich tomato sauce mixture that is flavorful and even has a little kick to it. The place comes out hot and stays hot during the whole meal. We stopped in this cute little spot to fuel up before heading to Sequoia NP and had about a 20-minute wait in line. Once we got to order things moved along quickly and we found ample seating on the back patio. While we didn't have our dogs on this trip - it IS DOG FRIENDLY on the side patio. It's on the pricer side, but what good places aren't nowadays?? We ordered drinks (coffee, tea, mimosas) and food (apple pie, greek eggs, lemon poppyseed bread). Our total came to ~$70.00 for the three of us. The food and drink were ALL good. Not one thing that we ate was I like "Na, wouldn't order that again." And the GREEK EGGS were my favorite! The halloumi cheese's saltiness blended perfectly with the eggs and tomatoes! The bread was perfectly crisp and chewy. We like it so much my 17 year old really wanted to come back the next day. This review is for the Smitten on Buena Vista Road. The meals I've had for the most part have been the salmon. It has always been delicia and fresh tasting. Service has always been friendly and prompt and attentive at all times. There is sitting to indoors and outdoors. Lots of hard services and as a result the noise levels can be very high and hard to carry on a conversation. The outside garden is a nice touch with plenty of Insta worthy locations. The service is good too. Everyone's very attentive and smiles! There is bar style seating at the store front window that was a perfect place to enjoy my food and do some people watching. The next time I went for lunch w/ a fellow Yelper during her lunch hour. My cheese sandwich and cold brew hit the spot. This place gets packed~like line out the door. Staff is friendly and efficient about getting drinks and food out as quick as possible. For me, the wait gives me a chance to slow down, take in the moment, and just breathe. There is a ton of seating options outside which is great for large groups or people w/ pets. I live in Newport but everytime I go to Bakersfield I have to stop at Cafe Smitten! They have my favorite iced Matcha and I haven't tried anything I don't like their food wise. Morning was hectic today!! Didn't have time to pick up my morning Starbucks, had to drop my daughter at school and had to report to jury services about an hour late. Needless to say I made it to jury duty, only to be told after waiting nearly 2 hours that we need to come back at 1:30 p.m. Gahhhh! So...had to fix my migraine and morning up quick and stopped by the cafe for some coffee therapy. Had a cafe latte and asked for the pie hole. And of course, they didn't have them at this location either. I asked the barista who's holding out on the pie holes in the kitchen and she said that the company they order it from actually have the pie hole machine broke. So there you have it folks! If you're smitten over these delectable nuggets, you'll have to keep checking back. No ETA on when the pie hole machine extraordinaire will be fixed so it could be until after the new year. To add to my already bad morning, I brought my laptop in to work but battery died out. And of course, I would leave the power adapter at work. Well at least I can sit here and enjoy my great coffee and pie hole stand-in: the always reliable choc chip cookie. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find this hip cafe in Downtown Bakersfield. I felt transported to the heart of LA Arts District/Denver/Portland once I entered the cafe from the shipping containers that were converted to bathrooms and mid-century modern decor. As someone that love very aesthetic food and cafes, I WAS IN HEAVEN. PARKING: Gigantic lot. Only downside is that the lot is unpaved so my little Civic took a slight beating. If you want to avoid the lot, there is a ton of street parking. SERVICE: Great! We had a large party so the cashier was very patient as we looked through the menu and the waitress that brought our food was very friendly. She even asked us if we needed anything else when all our food came -- which is a nice touch. FOOD: I ordered the Garden Salad (added schnitzel for $4) and a Matcha Latte with Oat Milk. The salad was average at best. WAYYYYY too many walnuts for my liking (that were fairly plain and not covered in dressing) but the rest of the salad was decent. I would say the dressing is very light, so I'd recommend getting a side order of dressing if you like your salads drenched. Matcha Latte was pretty decent (not overly sweet, thank god) and I was pleasantly surprised Oat Milk did not cost extra! OVERALL: All things considered, I would give Cafe Smitten five stars since the food was decent, service was great, and aesthetic was top notch. HOWEVER, I am docking a star because four of my friends that ordered food with mushrooms ended up getting food poisoning that evening. Additionally, my friend that ordered an omelette (that also had mushrooms in it) found a number of egg shells in the omelette. The lack of QA is disappointing, but I'd give this place another chance. read more

I got the quinoa bowl here and it was the perfect meal to eat before road tripping it back to the bay area. It wasn't too overwhelming but filling enough to make it to our ride back into town. She responded with a smile (almost half laughing) and a quick "no," which came across as a little condescending. Im not usually one to be taken aback so easily, but the interaction was uncomfortable and awkward. There was no follow-up, no offer to help navigate the menu, and no alternatives suggested. The person just kinda stared and waited. I felt caught off guard. A minute or two passed, more customers came in, and not wanting to hold up the line, I stepped aside. My partner ended up picking something random just to move things along. As a coffee shop owner myself, this interaction felt like a significant miss. I share this not out of malice, but in the hope that it offers some perspective on how important genuine hospitality is. Was driving through town on a road trip and stopped for a latte. It was EXCEPTIONAL. I got the chai latte with a shot of espresso. It was clearly authentic chai not any type of syrup so it wasn't too sweet but had a great robust flavor.
