When I say coffee shop I mean that they serve good coffee-espresso drinks better than drip-the music is soft and one can sit and talk or think or read. Consistently decent coffee, but the service is horrendous at best. If you order any food that isn't precooked or pre-made, you're going to need to wait at least 15 - 20 min for it to be made. If there's a rush going on, add another 10 -15 min of wait time. I get this isn't Starbucks, and I'm waiting for long for good coffee, but the coffee here isn't good enough to justify the long wait. We're talking Philz's level. The baristas behind the corner clearly can't give two cares about their job, but like... can we get food out a little longer than 30 min? I hate my job too, but damn. Super disappointing experience this morning. Hours posted said they open at 8am. Was obviously closed, dark and no one working inside. Worker came to the door around 8:04, was trying to "open up" as we waited. She served our hot coffee and iced coffee order immediately, as if she used coffee from the night before. Very clean, spacious (more than the exterior would suggest), with a large room at the end for groups) and also...a lovely toilet! I have to say... I am impressed with this coffee shop! They serve great drinks! Their Chai Tea Latte was one of the best I have had! My friend said their coffee was very good! Friday night jazz is great when you are looking for a soft evening. Just get there a little bit early, always filled. Harpo (owner) is a jazz afficianado and ALWAYS books great trios, usually. Soups are great, as are the scones. Coffee is just fine/expected. read more

This is a sweet coffee shop with good food and staff that are friendly...enough. But the coffee is simply bad. I don't know if people think the sharp, burnt taste is "strong" or "full bodied" but you can have both of those things without burning your beans and boiling the milk. it is rare that I make the effort to leave a negative review. Have to agree with Daisy and Sharon below. Counter people not professional or friendly at all. Ordered two cups of coffee. Both arrived lukewarm. Asked that they be heated up. Told that's the proper temperature, and they were unable to increase the temperature. Mind you I do not like a scalding cup of coffee, but it should be warmer than bath water. Requested a refund. Barista, and person apparently in charge agreed. The cashier told me she had processed the refund and I left to the coffee shop down the block. Refund not issued. read more

I hate giving places less than three stars because I know everyone is trying their hardest, but this just wasn't good coffee. I had a dirty chai lattee that was watery and didn't taste much like chai or espresso, and I had a cup of coffee that tasted like a two star cup of coffee. My wife and I just waked in to grab a coffee at around 10am. It's her birthday weekend and I brought her to HMB as a surprise since we haven't been here before. As soon as we walked in, the two women behind the counter stared at us, looked us up and down, and then went back to chatting. I actually greeted them, which was odd. My wife asked for a "iced macchiato" and the blonde woman paused for a moment and gave her a look so as to say "have you ever ordered coffee before"...and then she actually said, "Uh, like you'd order at Starbucks?" My wife felt really self conscious and so she just ordered an iced coffee and we left. Little things like this, like judgemental women behind a counter at an "upscale" coffee shop, can truly change the vibe of an entire trip. There are lots of coffee places in town. We simply chose the wrong one. read more

Newly opened (January 2015), this place has definitely changed the feel of the old M Coffee place. It lost the rustic charm that M Coffee had, but has a nice feel of it's own that I think I will grow to like. One of my favorite things about M was the hardwood floor. They kept the original wood, but refinished it... still nice, but not the same super comfortable feel that I loved in the old floor. I really like the artwork on the walls and the Jazz they are playing. Supposedly they plan on having live Jazz, but I'm not sure when they would do this with a 6:30 closing time. Staying open till 9:00 or 10:00 for some live music would be awesome! I expect some growing pains, but hopefully the shop will settle in to the space in a nice way. I wanted a large (20 oz) mocha. They did not have mugs for anything but the small (12 oz), so I had to get it in a paper to go cup, but it only ended up being about 12oz anyway. Even with the whipped cream, it did not come close to the top of the cup. Easy to fix going forward. Hopefully they will. I will be back to check up. read more

Very pleasant cafe and room for stroller or pram. The muffins and cakes look very nice and I can vouch for the muffin. The coffee was good if a little too hot. The macchiato is not the European style ie small but quite large. It was still a pleasant drink. We also had ham & cheese croissants. They were pretty good too. read more

Everyone wants to compare this to M coffee, but it's entirely different located in the same place. M coffee definitely had that old rustic feel to it, but I think Cafe Society has definitely kept the classic in tact, with a spin of modern day touch to it. The coffee & lattes are well made. The service is kept at a good pace (M coffee had very slow service). I haven't had a chance to really hang out at Cafe Society but they are my daily stop for coffee! The baristas are also nice, so that's a plus! read more

I was in Half Moon Bay for work and was advised by some of our staff who work/live in the area to try out this Cafe for coffee. Parking - It's on the Main Street so parking can be challenging but, because I was there on a weekday morning, it wasn't too bad. I found parking pretty quickly and no meter required! Outside Impression - Small and cute cafe. What draws you is the writings and flyers on the windows for live music. Made me sort of wish I was in HMB in the evening time to enjoy! Inside impression - the set up is really cute. A ton of tables with lots of seating. A really diverse group of people in the cafe on a weekday mid-morning which felt super welcoming and fun. The decor in the shop is very jazz/chill. The signage and artwork was very unique and I enjoyed looking at everything while I waited. Staff - Nice staff, pretty minimal conversation but all very pleasant. Menu - Ordered a sugar free vanilla latte with almond milk. I saw in the pastry/food window that there was a nice sized quiche and I didn't look up at the price.. assuming it would be a nice $5-6. After ordering and she rang up my coffee with quiche, it was 15! The quiche was $9, which kind of startled me. I knew they had already put the quiche in the convection or warmer so I didn't want to change my order. I waited for my order and they brought it out to me - there was fresh cut up strawberries and my quiche in a nice to go container (as I had asked) and I will say it was an actually really delicious quiche. Super cheesy and creamy. I probably wouldn't order it again because of the cost, but it was definitely delicious. Overall a nice little local coffee shop with a great vibe! This is a local coffee shop next to half moon bakery right off the main downtown part of half moon bay on the conveniently named main street. Parking is street only but that's fair dinkum in half moon bay. That means even if you can't find a spot right in front you'll find a spot a block or so away. You have especially good odds of getting good spots close by in the morning, which again is convenient as this is a coffee shop after all. The inside is of the long and narrow variety and it can seem crowded. There are a variety of wooden chair/table combos inside of miscellaneous sizes and random amounts of stickiness as they get a fair amount of traffic in the morning and sometimes the ultra hard working and busy staff don't always get to wipe down things before the next wave washes in. There's also three or so metal patio style chair/table combos just outside the door which are popular with dogs that own people and anyone wanting a bit of quiet with the coffee. In terms of quality this rolls in at slighter better then a starbucks which seems no big deal until you take into the fact that the pricing is less then half that of starbucks. So equivalent pricing for less cost right in downtown Half Moon Bay? Yes please. They've an arrangement with the bakery next door-the coffee cakes, croissants and suchlike are only for sale in cafe society. While there is nothing stopping you from hitting up the bakery next door (umm.....walnettos.....) the super awesome coffee and brownie cake is only available inside the coffee shop. They also do up bagels a right treat, along with some salad/sandwich thingys. Service is of the order at counter and pick up when yelled out methodology. Unless you go for the basic cuppa in which case it's just handed off. Ditto for the cake choices. Basic drip coffee/tea and a sweet will run you five bucks ish. Choosing a specialty drink-latte, espresso, cappuccino or whatever will add a buck or two onto that. The salad/sandwich stuff will come in at seven to ten dollars with a drink,(or a bit less) which isn't bad at all for the area. You could do a lot worse then this local, reasonable nicely placed coffee shop. read more

This place was recommended to me by a local hotel receptionist. Just a short wait, and I was served a reasonable, tasty pastry and an Americano. Just a mere 18 feet wide, and say 50 ft long, this place is a no nonsense good place to have a relaxing afternoon tea or coffee. Pleasant people here, friendly and upbeat. read more

I am usually hesitant to write a review like this because I like to give people some grace. However, I genuinely feel that it is noteworthy to share my experience. I visited coffee society last week and ordered a small latte while my husband ordered a drip coffee. He received his drink at the counter, and because there were many people and orders, I waited for my coffee by the window. After about 15 minutes, I noticed that the people who ordered before me had already received their drinks and were long gone. I politicly (keyword) inquired at the pickup window by noting I had not received my drink and wanted to know if it might be coming up. The barista did not make eye contact and pretended she did not hear me. She went over to talk to the cashier and murmured that this person (me) said they did not receive their drink to check my order. The cashier called me over and asked what I had ordered. I let her know I ordered a small latte and my husband a drip coffee. She murmured again to the barista and said they would prepare my order though they did 'not see it'. The barista, at this point, had not acknowledged me and seemed very peeved. She proceeded to make everyone else's drink (including people that came in after me checking in with them) and left me standing there at the order window for another 10 minutes. I was appalled and thought that it was unkind behavior. I just wanted my beverage, and it was one of those times where I felt that type of attitude was undeserved. I spent the rest of the day feeling gloomy about the whole thing. From a systematic standpoint, I would recommend this place take down people's names (not just shout their orders in case someone took my beverage), and I know we all have bad days, but maybe just some basic respect for customers. read more

We rocked up to this cafe early in the day so we were able to pick a nice table at the back. There was more than enough room to push a stroller through the cafe and park next to a table and be out of the way. I had a small cappuccino which turned out to be quite large and was a pretty standard coffee with a layer of foam on top. It wasn't bad coffee, just a bit too hot, large and not "espresso-y" enough. I also had a ham and cheese croissant which was tasty. At my table one of my party ordered a macchiato, which I was told was good but technically not a macchiato. Cafe Society has all the makings of the perfect little hometown cafe - friendly and hospitable staff, classic era jazz decor, good location, etc. Sadly the product quality, ambience, and price point is absolutely horrible. Their espresso shots pull in like 10 seconds - watery and awful, the staff haven't been trained to properly steam milk foam - you end up with those ugly, frothy cappuccinos like Starbucks makes (minus the consistency), they have the nerve of selling 2+ day old premade sandwiches at full price, the room is inundated with huge flies (literally dozens buzzing around landing on food and guests at any given moment during warmer months), their tables are wobbly and constantly dirty, sometimes they have music on - sometimes they don't, the list goes on and on. Heads up management - you're doing your guests and staff members a huge disservice and disrespect by not caring about the details. If you can't train them to steam foam - why did you go into the espresso business? If they're too busy behind the counter to wipe down tables, get out there and do it, there's no excuse - you are to blame for this, not your baristas. Get your tables leveled out or at least throw a sugar packet under the legs like a self respecting proprietor does. You had the chance to contribute to our little town's quaint charm, instead your complacency has brought us further away from being a hidden gem and closer to being completely forgettable, maybe even avoidable entirely. My favorite coffee spot in Half Moon Bay. I was glad to see they were open during the restrictions. They serve quality, delicious coffee and well-prepared espresso drinks with friendly service. The quiche they offer is super good and was perfect for a late breakfast stop. I certainly miss the usual gathering of regulars, but the barista said they were all ok and still coming by often. Even though I did not really need more coffee, I find myself trying to buy from any small shop I like when I'm in an area for work. If you're on Main Street, grab a cup and a pastry or savory meal here and you will be happy. read more
