I was shocked because the line has been out and around the corner every time I come. So that means if mid-meal I want more soda, or another mimosa, I'd have to wait in a 30+ minute line. Came in to speak to the manager and wasn't willing to issue a refund/credit for the difference advertised on Yelps menu (which they can update). DO NOT go off of their menu posted on Yelp and/or expect management to empathize with that. A $10 difference in pricing is crazy IMO. I've waited quite awhile to write this review. It's easy to write a five star review on something one is passionate about and even easier to write a review for something that is beyond frustrating. However, a two star review can be a challenge. There are places you want to like, such as Cafe Topes. Some reasons to like it is that it is convenient, it has a lovely decor and it provides patrons with unique benedict options, not found in most restaurants. Yet, with these pluses, its hard to deal with the minuses. The long line (often of groups ordering for multiple people), limited and uncomfortable seating (people save seats) and that they run out of many food items as you wait. Today we spent the day in Carlsbad Village and wanted breakfast. We considered places locally, and knew Cafe Topes was off our list. We ate here several times and tried a different style of the eggs benedict. The problem is that I got sick not once, but on two of our visits. We eat out quite a bit and I have only gotten sick from eggs at two places. I don't know why, but I know this is unusual. Are the eggs left out too long? Are these bad eggs? I know not everyone refrigerates farm fresh eggs. Whatever happened, it's difficult to return. We prefer a place with fresh juices, tableside service and a more consumer versus business driven environment. Even more important is having food that won't make me ill. Every time I come here I daydream about what life would be living in Carlsbad. I love the vibes this place has and how close it is to the beach. It makes it effortless to plan a summer hangout - brunch and then hangout at the beach after. I've had the horchata latte and strawberry matcha here, both were so delicious. Enjoyed how the strawberry matcha had a very vibrant taste with hints of floralness, probably from the rose petals sprinkled on top. The cinnamon here isn't too overly sweet and is nicely presented - it is huge! Yet so moist. I've gotten the shrimp & crab Benedict which was so delicious but I think it was a limited menu, and the chorizo Benedict which was pretty good but not as great as the former in my opinion. read more

Friend heard about this small restaurant via Facebook. I normally would throw the biggest fit about driving all the way to Carlsbad for breakfast but he offered to drive. Cafe Topes only has street parking. There's usually a long line to order on weekends. We got there late that Sunday (after 12p) so the line wasn't too bad. There's a daily specials chart once you get inside. The cashier is about 6 people away at this juncture. There is only ONE cashier so be patient. You order with him, pay via iPad, and he gives you a number to put on your table. Note that the iPad will prompt you to leave a tip if you pay by credit card (which we both did but agreed we'd prefer this option to be at the end of a meal). There is no a/c here at Cafe Topes. There are multiple ceiling fans but it felt stuffy inside. We were lucky to get a shaded table in front. We tried: Mocha (?): - ordered this fancy coffee mocha of some sort. It's a nice size and the mocha wasn't too sweet. Homemade Cinnamon Roll $4: - You can make this a dirty cinnamon roll by adding cream cheese frosting for an extra $1. The portion size is generous for $5! The cinnamon roll was served warm. There wasn't as much frosting as Cdj had hoped or had seen on Yelp pics. Maybe you can make it extra filthy for $6 or something.The dough tasted more dense than fluffy to us. We liked how they used an ample amount of cinnamon and brown sugar as evidenced in the prized thick cinnamon center of this roll. Crack'n Eggs : - Cafe Topes buys their tri tip from the infamous Seaside Market. He opted for a bagel, scrambled eggs, and seasoned potatoes. The bagel was toasted but he was disappointed it didn't come with butter. The tri tip was prepared a beautiful medium rare. It had a nice seasoned beefy flavor to it but was chewy. He asked for a side of hollandaise. The hollandaise would have tasted better if it was served hotter. It was barely lukewarm. DOUBLE HEADER $16: - The double header special lets you choose from ANY of their benedicts. I asked for my eggs to be lightly scrambled versus poached on both benedicts. I also requested extra hollandaise (no extra charge). The Mac 'n Benedict had real crab but unfortunately the crab tasted fishy to me. The Joelly had ample salty smoked salmon underneath the eggs and hollandaise. Unfortunately, the hollandaise tasted barely warm and the eggs were dry. I enjoyed the brie cheese on the very bottom. I was surprised that the brie was somewhat melted. Friend also would make a bagel breakfast sandwich using the tri tip as well as the smoked salmon (see pics). my blog has more detailed review and pics of our brunch One major issue we had with Cafe Topes, that had nothing to do with food or service, were the flies. There was a ridiculous, I mean truly ridiculous, amount of flies everywhere. I am not sure if it was the weather, the location, the section we were at? A yelp reviewer thought it was from the succulents. Regardless, it was difficult to enjoy breakfast when you constantly had to use your spare hand to shoo away flies. Cafe Topes was such a fun find. The two benedicts I tried weren't really my thing but I did enjoy the tri tip. I'd return to try another tri tip dish and also the banana-tella stack of pancakes. We were surprised that service was memorable. You don't always hear that for a 'pay first/food gets dropped' off kind of restaurant. I hope they find a way to eradicate the flies. read more

First time here and not sure why this place gets such high reviews - it just didn't live up to the hype today. We had the Basic, Hammer of Thor, Mexican Benedict and Crack n' Benedict. The first two were good yet unremarkable. Both Benedict's lacked flavor and were very bland. We also shared a cinnamon roll which had great cream cheese icing but the roll itself was blah. The dough was dry and could've used more buttery/gooey cinnamon swirls. If you're a group of 5 or more be prepared to wait for seating during weekend mornings. read more

Such a cute place to have brunch I only wish it was closer to me! We came here around 9am on a Sunday and were able to order our food pretty quickly. Parking was also a breeze since it was so early in the morning and there was a lot of open street parking. This place functions a little different from other brunch places as you wait in line to order food, then seat yourself as you wait for your food to come out. This makes for seating to be pretty efficient. I absolutely love the decor here. Everything is so cute and that succulent wall is adorable! I ordered the 222 with pancakes and 1 bacon 1 sausage. This was the perfect way to satiate my savory and sweet craving in the morning. I couldn't finish my pancakes and could have easily made it a second breakfast the next day. I also ordered the horchata which was good but not quite cinnamon-y enough for my taste. Next time I think I would stick to ordered the teas and the coffee. Overall, I would come back here again. Cafe Topes is deserving (and in need of) a larger location. It is just outside of the center of Carlsbad Village and we often drive by hopeful that the line outside won't be insane. This is almost never the case. The last time we were able to eat here was on a random Tuesday we had off and after breakfast, but before lunch. If you want to have a reasonable wait and get the best food/service I'd recommend going on a weekday at an off peak time. Breakfast, Lunch, or coffee menu, everything we've tried has been great. We are also a big fan of their gigantic cinnamon roll and recommend you order it 'dirty' (aka - a ton of extra gooey icing). Inside is a bit cramped and people are also waiting in line, so enjoy the delightful Carlsbad weather and sit outside. If you're able to get a table Cafe Topes will meet your hopes. read more

To start off with what's good: - the lady at front desk is pleasant to interact - croissant + muffin = vanilla croffin, this was the best item Everything else goes down otherwise - the vegetable scramble was tasteless and barely had any eggs, kinda more of red bell peppers - French toast was about ok - hash browns were literally uncooked, they feel like frozen - vanilla latte was quick but ok, nothing special For close to $40 doesn't seem worth it I hope they buckle up, looking at the earlier reviews it seems they were good but hit a glitch, unfortunately I won't be returning. read more

This is a cute brunch place! I ordered the pork belly benedict, and it's super delicious. It's a very hearty breakfast option since it came with seasoned potatoes and huge slabs of pork belly. I liked the taste of everything, though I kind of wish that they went slightly gentler on the BBQ sauce for the pork belly. Prices can be a bit steep but you get what you pay for because the quality of the food is great. The atmosphere is pretty casual, since you go up to the register, order, and find your own seating. Cafe Topes is a 5 star gem!! Came in for breakfast and it was packed. You order at a central counter, get a number, and find your own seat. There are 2 patios and indoor seating, so even being extremely busy, it did not take long to find a seat. We ordered a lavender mocha and turmeric latte, and both were exceptional (albeit pricey, at nearly $5 each). These trendy drinks often miss the mark, but these were perfect and you could taste each individual element. For breakfast entrees, we ordered the country burrito (an off-menu special) and the 222 (create your own) with Maui pancakes, eggs, and sausage. Hot damn, everything exceeded expectations! For one, portions are huge! Also, everything is just so solidly good with a twist of innovation. The burrito was smothered with sausage & gravy, while the Maui pancakes feature shredded coconut, macadami nuts, bananas, and a cream cheese drizzle. I'm drooling recapping the meal!
