I was excited to try this place, especially based on the reviews. I'll list what I enjoyed first: *Yummy Potatoes *Flavorful Pancakes Here's what I didn't like: *Donuts were directly at the edge of the counter, uncovered, with what looked like "little fingerprints" in the frosting and flies on them. There was also a patron with a HUGE DOG that put its front legs onto the counter to sniff the donuts. I lost my appetite... *The "crack" (tri-tip) definitely lacked flavor, compared to the "crack" at the Seaside Market-where the meat comes from. *The Manho Arnold Palmer didn't taste like it had any mango in it at all. *The syrup is thick and tasted cheap. I definitely don't plan on ever returning. I regret the huge tip I left (I paid at the register when ordering before I got my food). read more

Bustling brunch spot in Carlsbad! I came by Cafe Topes after finishing a glass blowing class around the corner. I had never been before but my friend said it was good - She was definitely right! They have a fun mix of classic brunch items (e.g. scrambles, egg sandwiches, pancakes) and unique food items/speciality lattes (the blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes we're calling my name, but maybe next time). I ended up ordering the Chorizo Benedict with hashbrowns. I enjoyed them but would mix it up next time since literally everything on the menu looked delicious. The line to order was pretty long when we went, but it went quickly and gave me time to peruse the menu. Didn't have any trouble finding a seat outside either. The restaurant itself is very cute and clean. Would return - Maybe for those blueberry lemon ricotta pancakes ;) read more

Oh, I love this place. I've been coming here for at least a decade; usually for breakfast. Today, while waiting in line to order a Cardiff Crack sandwich (the Terramar), I noticed several plates of fish and chips going by and decided to order that instead. The fries were fresh-cut and seasoned, and the fish lightly breaded! It was better than Harbor Fish Cafe down on Coast Hwy and even Harbor Fish and Chips in Oceanside Harbor. I have had tacos, Benedicts, pancakes, the cinnamon bun extra dirty, and various hot drinks. Everything is always fresh! They were so sweet to Cali; they gave her a cup of whipped cream and had dog bowls stacked up on the patio for cold water. Pro tip: it is "Order first and pay at the counter", but dogs are allowed inside so you queue with your pup. I have dined indoors, and it's open and airy, but I actually prefer to sit on the patio or out front. The ambience and decor are so relaxing there versus the slight chaos inside. This place used to be pricey, but now it's surprisingly par for the course. Overall, I will be back; I still want that sandwich! Cardiff crack breakfast burrito is delicious, but definitely big enough for two people. Dog friendly patio. Bring a hat if it's a sunny day, because it isn't a completely shaded patio. Indoor seating available. Staff is friendly. Parking can be tricky. Be prepared to walk a few blocks. read more

The restaurant is placed in the corner of the street and the line to order food is all the way out the door. Rule of thumb must order before sitting, my mistake! Staff are very friendly and efficient. I ordered the Crack'n Eggs with seasoned potatoes. Meat was tender and potatoes were crisp to perfection. Restaurant over all was lovely, loved the open concept. Made the space look bright and welcoming. Will go back again! read more

employees at the Westin said this place was really good so we were excited to check it out. We showed up 5 minutes before they opened and there was already a line out the door. one of their registers was broken so the lined moved a bit slow. the inside of the place was meant to feel rustic but ended up just being a bit dirty/dingy. There was dust everywhere and the tabletops all felt sticky. Because it is open air, there were quite a bit of flies buzzing around all the food areas. The service/staff was all very nice and friendly. Answered all our questions and without any drama. The food came out fast as well. Didn't feel like anything special to be honest. Like most people who are out of town, they go eat breakfast out. The food didn't taste exceptionally good or bad, it was just ok. The quality wasn't outstanding by any means. For example, I ordered a dish that came with sausage... the sausage was just a frozen sausage patty, not even a link. I understand that everyone's standards are different so you must take recommendations at face value. There are better options in Carlsbad nearby. read more

Cafe Topes exceeded my expectations like crazy. I came in with my collagen powder and asked if they could add it into my late when preparing my drink and they said yes with no hesitation (very rare with coffee shops) Their food was also very very good. Didn't taste like Cisco based bottom line bottom rung food fare. Special shout out to Callie for the excellent customer service. read more

Wow! This place was def worth the hype. It's a cute small little breakfast spot on a corner street. Not many tables for eating inside, but there is also outdoor seating. You place your order as soon as you get in and they will give you a number and you find your place to sit. Menu you is simple but lots to choose from and personally thought the prices were great! Waitress, hosts, and chefs were all so friendly! But here's what you really want to know...how was the food? Let's just say I DEVOURED my ENTIRE meal. What we got: - Crack'n Benedict: not only was presentation beautiful but the flavor and the amount of food almost made me cry. I never knew steak in an eggs benedict would be so good. When I ordered they asked how I wanted my meat to be done, I chose medium to be on the safe side but honeslty wish I got a medium rare because they cooked it perfectly! If I'd come back, I'm definitely getting this again! - Bloody Mary: I ordered the Bloody Mary and had the option on making it spicy! Wow! It was delicious and more. Bloody Mary's are always a hit and miss but if you love them, Cafe Topes won't do you wrong. - County Fried Steak: my dad ended up getting this and he said it was pretty good and his eggs were cooked perfectly, runny and not undercooked. He mentioned several times of the presentation on both our meals being great and how good the food was. - Latte: my dad also got a latte and for him being his own brevel barista at home, he enjoyed it. Hawaiian Latte (iced): I ended up getting an iced hawaiian latte to go because I really wanted to try it after seeing some one get it. I'm not much of a coffee girl but this was quite delicious and light. There were many latte options, if I come back again id like to try the Lavender Honey Iced Latte. Overall, I definitely recommend if you're in the area and looking for a good, reasonably priced, breakfast spot. read more

My fellow yelpers really helped me out with this one. After researching Yelp, we decided to find this Cafe and stop for lunch on our way from L.A. to La Jolla. It was the perfect place to stop. It is located in the middle of a residential area on the west side of the 5 freeway in Carlsbad. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. After we told them this was our first time there, they helped us with the menu choices. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The Granola & Yogurt was large with lots of fruit, nuts and honey. The 222 was classic and everything was cooked perfectly. The fish and chips were light and delicious. They were not breaded and fried like the classic type fish and chips. There was enough to share. The house coffee was great as well. There is plenty of street parking and restrooms were clean. This is definitely a locals type place and a great find for those looking for a yummy breakfast or lunch. I noticed they do serve sparkling wines too. read more

This is one of our favorite breakfast spots! They have great gluten free options, delicious coffee and always have a selection of donuts from The Goods (which is an amazing donut shop (which also has gf options) on State St)! The staff are always family and service is usually pretty quick even when they have a crowd. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and dog friends are welcome. They even provide bowls at the water cooler for the 4 legged patrons. The portions are plentiful and we NORMALLY split but this time we got our own meals. Wifey got the gluten free French toast with berries and I got the Gone to Maui pancakes. We also split the hash browns because why not? The French toast was good and the berries were fresh and delicious! The Gone to Maui cakes hit every bit of my sweet tooth and took me to the islands! Coconut, macadamia nut and fluffy cakes! It's just around the corner from Carlsbad Village Dr, across the street from the Boys and Girls Club. It's not just a coffee spot but a nice place for a breakfast, or lunch. Portions are generous. Most of the seating is outdoors on the side patio or in front, with some limited seating indoors. We had a group of 7 people and were able to get our order in and get served fairly quickly. Our orders ranged from pancakes to eggs to oatmeal and breakfast burrito everyone was satisfied. This is a great option if you are in the Village and looking for something healthy to eat. And bonus-- the Barrio Glassworks open studio is right across the street. read more

Mediocre food, definitely too expensive for what you get. Fish tacos weren't very good. Fish tasted weird and undercooked even though the batter was overcooked. My family was all finishing their food by the time I got mine. Had to go to the counter to ask where my food was. Was told they were finishing up. No apology for the delay, in fact they were a bit dismissive. They really need to have someone look at their table around the palm tree. Super sketchy and is going to hurt someone when it inevitably fails. Can't recommend this place. Sorry. read more

This is a Carlsbad locals staple! Everytime I have someone visit me from out of town I take them here for breakfast. The vibes are so cute and quaint. I think after 10am they start playing music in the patio and it is just such a fun cute brunch setting. The drivers bring out your food to your table and water is self serve. To order, you'll have to wait in line. And after 9am it wraps around the corner. But everytime I've gone I've never had an issue finding a table. The food is all local bought or grown, so supporting this place is supporting a lot of other local vendors as well. Love this place, if you're looking for a good casual place to eat, look no further. read more

You can get eggs any style (poached, fried, scrambled) just not as an omelette ‍. It's like saying you are unable to serve water in a coffee cup. Food was decent. Coffee was ok Staff needs to be educated on basic culinary techniques. read more

One star held back because wait was long. But it was worthwhile because the food came out fast and consumed just as quickly. Made a stop here as we headed home to Los Angeles county. Found it on Yelp and also because of rave reviews and proximity to the freeway. Place looked like mainly locals go here and I see why. Parking on the street a little tricky. We decided and conquered. Hubby got in line while I looked for parking. There were prob 20 people ahead of us, 30 min wait. No reservations and line moved steady. Place was clean and plenty of seating. Hubby ordered chilaquiles with chorizo and enjoyed it. I got the mazapan latte, one of the best I've had not too sweet and hit the spot after a night of drinking. I ordered the crack n Benedict and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend and plan to wait and bring your appetite. Everything looked amazing, want med pancakes but glad I didn't order because there would have been no room! read more

So! Freaking! Good! Will definitely be back next time we're here! The staff was super friendly and helpful with menu options! It's open friendly so if you love your pets feel free to bring them! My husband ordered the Good toast with crack..he was obsessed and he's not a breakfast person! He ate the whole plate and was bummed we were leaving town today because he wants to eat here again! I ordered the egg scramble with bacon and topped with avocado. I got the seasoned potatoes (order them crispy!) and sourdough toast. Their berry jam was so good and tasted homemade and fresh! We got cups of coffee and then ordered coffee to go! A caramel cappuccino and their winter latte with oat milk! Seriously so good and so happy I found this place! They have a very cute out door patio with beach's umbrellas for plenty of shade! Loved this place! Thank you for a great experience and amazing food! read more

Great low key, laid back brunch spot. You order at the counter and pick your own table. They bring the food to your table. Very high quality classic American items with great classic Mexican as well. Chilequiles with chorizo, burrito etc. This time I got the crack salad. HUGE portions. Tri tip steak was seasoned to perfection and great compliment to the rest of the salad. Very filling. Heirloom tomatoes very tender! Lemon ricotta pancakes were fluffy and soft. Not too sweet. Just right. The Basic is anything but. This place was 3.5 stars in my book but making it 4 because service was phenomenal. All in all this is a cute neighborhood joint off the main drag in Carlsbad. It's adorable and service is quick and tremendously friendly and you'll get good food. If you see a long line don't fret because you order at the cashier register and then find a spot to sit down. There's outdoor and indoor seating. To drink we got the gingerbread latte and the horchata (but added coffee). Both were solid. We tried their famous cinnamon roll. We are cinnamon roll connoisseurs so we're really excited about this. We got the option where you pay more to put more icing on it. We were bummed that this was just okay in our book. It's more of a bready/doughy cinnamon roll. It's huge but could honestly have done with less of the icing. The icing was cheesecake-y and liquidy. Next we had the chorizo Benedict and the crack breakfast burrito. Both were solid but sadly really greasy. Still good but felt too heavy given that fact. Parking was easy as we just parked in the neighborhood. read more

Ambiance is the #1 thing at this place. I asked for two eggs, extra crispy on the bacon. My son ordered French toast based on pictures. I attached a picture. I received double fried potatoes, eggs and bits of bacon together, my son's French toast looked nothing like the pics. I thought coming early we would get better quality of food. Food was mediocre, not bad just expecting a little better considering the price point. But, cute place inside and outside. read more

the cinnamon roll pancakes will always be number 1, but they don't get them until 9am and we went at 8am:( although i didn't get them this time i have dreamed about these pancakes since i last had them in 2014... it's been 11 years & they are that good. the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes were a yummy second choice. good balance of not too sweet and not too tart. the lemon filling in the center was the best part and i wished there was more of it. the blueberry ricotta on top was delish especially with the lemon filling. the ricotta was a little gritty per usual texture. the pancakes were good but weren't any thing special without the topping. i wished the lemon filling was layered between each of the pancakes. the country burrito was so yummy. the sauce on top made it. everything in the burrito was super yummy and all the flavors complimented each other. i tried a bite of the strawberry french toast. the french toast was super yummy, but the strawberry drizzle and cream cheese was very artificial strawberry. didn't love it. the crack and eggs was great. the tri tip was cooked and seasoned perfectly. it was the best eggs benedict i've ever had. the maui pancakes were good. if you like tropical flavors this is for you. cream cheese frosting on top with shredded coconut. i preferred the lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes to this one! the maui had a more tame flavor. the service was great- the waitress was really kind about being out of the french toast i wanted and handled the situation well. we got our food within 10 minutes of ordering which was amazing! the cafe was so cutely decorated and such a fun place to eat! read more

So glad my friend introduced me to this place, I had no idea it even existed. I've been missing out! Seriously loved it for the atmosphere & food. I ordered the rustic without cheese & house potatoes & house cinnamon roll on the side. Have to say it was worth the cost! Portions were hugeeee and absolutely delicious. Thank god I had someone to share the cinnamon roll with, it was bigger than my face! Can't wait to try some more items. read more

This bagel spot has a self ordering station so you get to see all the combinations you can put on a bagel. I really enjoyed both. You can get a plain bagel for $2.95 and add a schmear for $1.95. It was a nice bagel shop and everything looked cleaned plus well organized. They offer a variety of other bagels, bagel sandwiches, coffees and beverages. It's definitely a bagel spot to check out.

Unfortunately, that's where our positive experience ended. The restaurant was extremely busy, and it took quite a while before our server came to greet us. We were able to order waters, but even those took a long time to arrive. After another long wait, we finally ordered our appetizers. Our original server, who I believe said her name was Noemi or Naomi, came across as overwhelmed, stressed, and like she didn't enjoy her job. While I understand restaurants get busy, her attitude made us feel like we were an inconvenience. She wasn't very attentive, especially to our kids, who had been at Legoland all day and were extremely hungry. She never came back to take their food order, and we found ourselves waiting longer and longer without any communication. Eventually, another server took over our table. She was incredibly kind, friendly, and apologetic. We explained that we had already been waiting a long time and just wanted to place our food order to go so we could get our hungry kids back to the hotel. She handled the situation professionally and did her best to help, which we truly appreciated. If you're dining with young children, I'd keep in mind that service may not be the best fit if your family needs an attentive server or timely service. Waiting extended periods without updates can be especially difficult for tired, hungry kids. It's disappointing because the restaurant itself seemed nice, and the hostess and second server were both wonderful. Unfortunately, the experience with our original server left a bad impression. While I understand busy nights happen, the lack of attentiveness and communication made for a frustrating experience, and because of that, I don't think we'll be returning.

From the moment you walk through the front doors, it's clear that this place is something special. The charming atmosphere, paired with the mouthwatering smells coming from the kitchen, sets the tone for a wonderful dining experience. The music was perfectly selected, with a chill vibe that matched the beach town feel. The staff was attentive and hardworking, always on their feet, and their guidance on the menu was especially helpful as both my husband and I had a hard time choosing. We began with drinks: the Hawaiian Express and the Peppermint White Mocha. The Hawaiian Express was a standout for me--its coconut-infused espresso flavor was absolutely delicious, and I'd rate it a solid 5/5. My husband tried the Peppermint White Mocha but was a bit disappointed, giving it a 3/5. He felt the peppermint flavor was too subtle, and the drink's texture became grainy toward the end. Next up was the Mom's Famous Cinny Roll, and wow--it was amazing! A perfect 5/5. The icing was heavenly, and I'd highly recommend opting for it "dirty" (extra icing) for the full experience. The Cinny Roll itself was light and fluffy, so much so that it felt like you could easily eat several in one sitting. The only slight critique we had was that the cinnamon flavor could have been a bit more pronounced, as the extra icing tended to dominate the dish's flavor profile. Perhaps a sprinkle of cinnamon on top would balance it out, but overall, it was an indulgent treat. Finally, we shared the Crack Breakfast Burrito, which was bursting with bold, flavorful spices. We highly recommend any of their "crack" dishes--they're definitely worth trying. I'd give it a 5/5. If there's a wait for the sauce, don't skip it--it's absolutely worth the wait. One thing we would suggest skipping, though, is the chips and salsa. The salsa was on the watery side, and we ended up not eating much of it. Next time, I'd opt for a different side. Cafe Tapas was the perfect spot for my birthday breakfast. Everything about this place made the morning special. I ordered the breakfast burrito, my husband got the Crack Benedict, and my kiddo had the "111." To drink, I had a matcha, and my husband had an iced vanilla coffee. The food was fresh and flavorful -- here's how I'd rate everything: Kids 111 Breakfast: 8/10 -- simple, classic, and perfectly done. Breakfast Burrito: 7/10 -- tasty, but could've been even better with a cream-based salsa like avocado or cilantro crema. Crack Benedict: 7/10 -- the hash browns were unreal, crispy and flavorful. My husband just realized he's not a steak Benedict guy, but that's a personal preference. Matcha: 1/10 -- unfortunately, this one missed the mark. Definitely low-grade matcha and not worth $6. I wouldn't recommend it. Now, the highlight: the service. The staff was incredibly attentive and kind. They even brought a bubble for my kiddo, which he loved! We started this yelp as a way to blog our food and we started off really splendid! We went in mid morning and were surprised by how busy it was (where I come from that's a good sign) first thing we liked was how open the kitchen was, and it looked so clean, a really tall chef was laughing and dancing and it looked like such a good time in the kitchen. Next thing we noticed was the huge menu, so many options, wait 10 minutes for huge options for lunch? Or dive into the giant breakfast? Decided to go with the breakfast, I did the veggie scramble and she did the double header Benedict, lavender coffee is a must as was recommended by the sweet girl at the register (she was training but doing very well) after about 5 minutes out walks these monuments to breakfast, my scramble was the perfect amount of veggies piled into fresh egg scrambled right in that sweet spot 10/10 on the hash browns as well and a nice thick toast. My wife said she's never had such perfectly poached eggs before today. All and all it was really well done. Servers are sweet and that kitchen is a blast to watch! Will be back and often read more

NEVER AGAIN! If you value your time and don't wish to be treated rudely, don't go here! After waiting more than an hour for our food (when we were told the wait would be 30 minutes) I noticed that several people who were in line behind us to order, already had their food and were halfway through their meals. When I inquired about the status of our order, I was told "they are plating it now"...and still waited an additional 15 minutes....for eggs?! We decided to leave and wanted our money back. The manager was condescending and couldn't have cared less that she had some dissatisfied customers. When I asked how it was possible that people behind us in line already had their food and we didn't, she said "I don't need your attitude"! Whoa! Not a voice was raised, not a rude word uttered...other than by her (the manager). I really wanted to love this place when I first came here based on all the great things I had heard. Unfortunately, I did not experience any of these great things upon my visit. Service: Girl at front register seemed unenthusiastic and had problems answering questions we had regarding basic menu items. Food: I settled on a classic eggs benedict with no canadian bacon, sautéed potatoes and a coffee. Coffee was basic, nothing special at all. Benedict came out with cold potatoes and very over-poached eggs. After mentioning this to the staff, they took my plate and returned 30 seconds later with a plate that had clearly been microwaved. At this point, I was too hungry to make more of a deal about it. I was going for 2 stars but their cute atmosphere earned another star. There are plenty of other breakfast/brunch places in better locations that are much more worth checking out. read more

Time for an update since my last review was over 9 years ago. 4/5 Crack tacos - fresh, solid, tasty filling, tender meat, didn't skimp on avocado or meat. 2/5 Fish and chips - fish itself was good but the overall breading was soggy and so were the fries. I don't believe in my whole life I have had a soggy fish and chips. How does that even happen? It appeared a dark brown, cooked breading? Did someone leave it sitting on the counter for too long? I don't know but it was terribly disappointing. Definitely missed not having real tartar sauce. I know they are trying to make fun and good food but I find when coming here the food is hit or miss. Most items with the crack tri tip are good and other than that I try to stick to things you can't mess up like breakfast burritos. read more

I've never had anything bad here. The food is not exactly inventive, but very solid. A weekend treat is getting the Crack 'n' eggs for breakfast. It's Cardiff Crack tri tip and eggs and is so so so good every time. I've had their benedict before and their omelets are always spot on too. My only criticisms are that they have gotten my sides wrong on more than one occasion and the line is always ridiculous. But frankly, if you're just having a lazy Sunday brunch, sitting in line for 15 minutes isn't too terrible, is it? Lastly, the succulent wall is very impressive (I happen to love succulents) and sitting in the dining room seems to almost be mellowed out by this giant living wall. Found this amazing place cause it was on our way home and if nothing else the people here are extremely friendly and genuinely happy. I've not come across such nice people in a long time! The food was mouth watering and the portions were big . This is the place to stop if you do not live around here and if you do then you're missing out for sure. On another note the restaurant is clean and the bathroom was clean too. I took my daughter and I didn't cringe when I walked in. It was actually really clean and smelled good . Opting for the gravy on the side was a wise choice, allowing me to manage the creaminess to my preference. The blackberry Bellini was a burst of pure blackberry goodness - a delightful drink choice. I was equally pleased with the fluffy and delicious hash browns. While my experience was wonderful, a touch more variety in menu options could elevate it even further. The wait time was quite long, which was a bit frustrating, especially considering the prices were on the higher side. For a cafe with that pricing, I expected a smoother experience. That said, the pancakes were definitely a highlight--fluffy and flavorful. However, the rest of the food was pretty average. My husband & I have tried over 1/2 the menu & have yet to be disappointed,, It's hard to find a good family run , eatery Especially in Carlsbad today was no different my husband had the double header (not on the menu yet) classic Benedict & country Benedict on the Same plate. My boyfriend and I recently visited Café Topes for the first time, and we had a great experience. When we arrived, the line to order was fairly long, but it moved quickly, and the staff were very friendly. I ordered my coffee dairy-free, but it was initially made with regular milk. Fortunately, the staff corrected the mistake right away. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the red chilaquiles--the salsa was mouth-watering. My boyfriend ordered the tri-tip tacos and really enjoyed them as well. Overall, we had a wonderful visit and would definitely recommend this place! read more

I want to like this place so bad, but I have a bad experience every time I go. :( I asked for an iced latte...they brought out a hot...no big deal...I told them I ordered an iced....they took my hot latte and poured it over ice! The ice melted in no time and I had a watered down latte that wasn't even worth drinking. I live in the Palms Springs area so I believe this gives me some credibility about reviewing restraunts. I have been to Cafe Topes several times with my wife and each time is more amazing than the last. I have read the reviews on here and some really irritate me. The place has been open less than 3 mos. so give them a break. If you have a gripe, let Joe and Jacquie know as I know they will make it right with you. Absolutely loved this place! The food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully prepared. The service was impressively fast without sacrificing friendliness, which made the whole experience even better. Yes that's right. If you are Hispanic, black or any other race rather than white then you're advised not to even think about entering this place. Only the kitchen people are Hispanic. Front of the house are all white. Discrimination to the maximum. The owners are racist and if you step foot into this cafe you will be looked down and throw a lot of unwelcome vibes at you like you absolutely don't deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect. The food here is hit or miss, some of it is delicious & at other times it's just ok. The benedicts & huevos rancheros are my fav...the coffee needs some serious help, I've tried several different types from lattes to mochas & the foam was gone very quickly, not velvety smooth & not so great. Hopefully they can train their baristas, the location is great & the staff is super helpful & friendly. But I won't go here unless I've already had coffee elsewhere as I find it lackluster. read more
