We stopped in on a Saturday night without reservations..by chance they had a cancelation, but otherwise we probably wouldn't have been able to have dinner without one. We ordered drinks and a cheese plate...all looked good. But the service went downhill fast...the server kept looking at us, but seemingly ignoring us. Our food took forever to come out - some guests had come in after us, and we're already eating their meal. The manager came by to ask how everything was, and after we requested it, she said she'd check on the food. My wine glass had been empty for a while, and she didn't address it until my husband pointed it out. She said she'd pour the next one complementary. The food wasn't great...and to top it off, the check took forever to come. We weren't in a rush, but my stomach started to feel funny. Needless to say, I went home and threw up my entire meal a few hours later. Horrible experience, especially considering it was our first night on our mini-honeymoon. This restaurant offers a calm and elegant ambiance that could be an enjoyable dining experience. The menu is extremely limited, with a few set options available. The server was unwilling to allow any flexibility. For example, we wanted artichokes omitted from the salad but the server could not accommodate because the salad was premixed. And because of this limited menu there was only one salad available. The food took a while to get to the table. When it did arrive it was adequately prepared but the portions were on the smaller side. Given the cost of the food, more was expected. The main challenge for Chez Nous is that the French style food is distinctly not French. Some French sounding menu names is not a substitute for actual French style food. The business model is clear ... simple menu, small portions, high prices, with a veneer of French cooking to make it seem worth it. However, anyone who's had authentic French style food will be disappointed. In summary Chex Nous pretends to be something it's not, authentic. If you want French cuisine you should try else where. And there are better local dining options available as well. And we never did get the salad we ordered. read more

I always photograph my food and regretfully wish I could share but a description will have to do. My husband and I were absolutely blown away. We started with the 3 cheese board. The Brie was creamy perfection, blue cheese was soft and not to stinky and the red wine goat was delightful. Pickled veggies were a lovely touch, can't get over the tangy unique flavor of the cauliflower. We continued w the tapenade, more perfection. Not to salty, got better w every bite. Next up was the grilled veggie ravioli. Design the bite, we cut it up grabbing everything they included in the dish to really get the full flavor in every bite, spinach, arugula, and olive oil was extraordinary. For our entrees we did the veggie burger and smoked bluefish mousse. The mousse was giving me kossar smoked white fish vibes but less salty which was great because the capers give it the bite I wanted. Veggie burger was beet, texture was smooth not to grainy but still didn't stay in it's perfect shape as a homemade veggie burger should live organically formed. Together they were actually quite nice!! Before jumping to dessert may I add the fries were everything. Every fry should taste like a potato...yum. But dessert was every pb and j lovers dream. It was a special! Pb ice cream in a chocolate sandwich. Somehow not to rich w whipped cream (lite and fluffy) and the perfect berry compote. Could you describe a better night. Okay, we decided to give this another try after a very bad experience. Drove 90 minutes over Labor Day weekend. Got there 10 minutes late. Greeted by the Maitre'd (or owner). First thing out of his mouth was you are late). He indicated he would have to rush our party -now 4. The reason is he had other parties booked so we we have to eat and be out after 40 minutes. Looking around, the joint was almost empty. Go figure. We decided at that point, we won't be rushed and decided to leave. As we walked out, we takled to a group of people who just ate there and told us that the service was god awful and the food was bland and tasteless. The man indicated he had Lamb chops and they came out completely fatty and over cooked. The woman had a fish dish that was in her words- so bad, she took one bite and returned it. I don't know if it was the alignment of the stars, but I found this so-called French restaurant to be the worst food I've had, I think, ever! If I could give it 0 stars I would, but the 1 star is for the good mussels appetizer and ambience. My Scottish salmon was absolutely awful tasting. Seared on one side and the underside wet and grey, with some unappealing zucchini veggies as side...the risoto cake was decent. Service was average, the place was packed, so somebody definitely likes this place. I skipped dessert having had such an awful entree. Overpriced and definitely not French in any sense of the word. More like an Italian chef thinking he's cooking French. I recommend McDonald's...at least you get cheap and the savory MSG. read more

Very disappointed after hearing good things from friends. Went tonight, was seated at a nice quiet table with my wife. Drinks came quickly and the waitress took our order. After more than an hour I asked why the appetizers were taking so long at whic point we we told how sorry they were that they forgot about them. 5 minutes after I said I did not want it anymore they brought it out. I sent it back and our main course came right out. The dish was ice cold. It was supposed to be medium rare rack of lamb. They again apologized, took the order back, I guess heated them up and in a few minutes brought out well done rack of lamb- but it was hot. I probably won't go back again!! read more

BEST restaurant in Lee! This place is family-owned and you can tell they pour there heart into the restaurant. The interior is super cozy and cute. The food is innovative and wholesome. I absolutely love the option to do half portions instead of whole portions- you get to try more food that way! I had a half portion of goat cheese tortellini which were giant and homemade and so yummy. I also had a half portion of the lamb ribs which were cooked rare as I asked them to be. They too were perfectly delicious and juicy. Also the bread they serve is unbelievably good. I couldn't stop eating it! Lastly, I had a hazelnut chocolate tart cake for dessert and it was easily one of the best desserts I've ever had. All desserts are made on premises by the chefs wife. They use really high quality ingredients- well worth the calories! The service is spot on. The waitress was so sweet and accommodating. A great experience all around! read more

After a day of torrential Berkshire rain, Chez Nous provided a peaceful ending to a fraught day. Our party of four was seated in the dining room opposite the bar, and my initial fears of a toxic noise level were dispelled at once by sound-absorbing panels attached to the ceiling. Smart move for the Chez and it made the experience actually pleasant! We were able to converse at normal levels and the other diners in the room didn't have to raise their voices to be heard at their own tables. So, props on the acoustics and taking into account the cost of the meal, worth the fourth star. First, the executive summary: I want to say at the outset that 1) we had a really good time, overall. We arrived at 7:30 and were the last diners to leave at 10:30. The room was intimate and very conducive to a leisurely meal and good conversation. We did not feel rushed at any time and for that, we are very grateful. And, 2) three courses with wine and dessert: under $130 per couple including a 20% tip. Excellent value overall. Next, service: our waitress was prompt and friendly, and paid us proper attention during the meal. Water glasses were refilled promptly and unobtrusively, additional gluten-free rolls were delivered upon request with a smile. Third, the food: starting with me (note: since I write the review I get to go first. I know this is not polite - that I'm supposed to put myself last - but I've done that all my life and now I'm kickin' in at the start. Our session is up, already? See you next week, doc), I ordered the house-made pate plate that included chicken liver mousse (yum) and a sort of pate de compagne (meh), as well as another dab of goo which I couldn't identify. This was accompanied by a couple of meager slices of un-toasted brown-ish bread (the no gluten thing?), a slice of pickle (not cornichons), and a sort of sweet chutney. I had to ask for Dijon mustard, which was immediately produced. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to pate, so I was a bit disappointed - Chez's departure from slices of baguette, whole grain mustard, and cornichons was un-helpful, but I guess plays to the gluten thing. My big disappointment, though, was the quality, size, and preparation of the rib-eye steak I ordered. I had ordered medium - always best for a rib-eye - but it came red and raw in the middle. After I nibbled around the better cooked edges, I had to send it back to the kitchen for more cooking. At any rate, the meat was 1) too thin! (maybe 3/8 - 1/2 inch thick - should have been an inch) to be grilled properly, and 2) tough! There was no marbling that I could detect, making it dry, chewy, and unpleasant. Could this meat have been USDA Utility grade??? I get waaay better meat at Costco and Fairway. I gladly would have paid a couple of bucks extra for a better piece of meat. So, Chez Nous, if you're reading this review, change purveyors or shop at Costco. My "steak" was plated with a wedge of hash-browns...not what I had expected and clearly not up to the standard set by the Miss America Diner in Jersey City. Another of our party started with the PEI mussels, followed by the Duck Confit - crispy with a prune glaze - which came with a really superb corn souffle, hot from the oven. Kudos to the Chez for that. Some one at the table said that this was their best meal out in the Berkshires...equal to the level of the Old Mill in Egremont, but without the hand-hewn beam, squeaky floor ambiance or the ample check. We will give it another try on another night...and this time, I'll try the line-caught cod. read more

Hands down, this is one of the best restaurants you will ever visit. Anywhere. Note that I ate here on a Saturday night during the summer, their busiest time of year. I walked in at 7pm and was seated at the bar in exactly one minute. I started with the House Pâté. Off the charts GREAT! You won't taste anything fresher with so much flavor. For my entree, I had the veal tenderloin. I asked them to cook it medium with a leaning towards medium rare. It was like they read my mind. The meal was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy with appropriate portions. Delicious! For dessert, the dark chocolate mousse and well, it was sweet, light and balanced. Outstanding. Randi my server was gracious, professional with a smile that lit up the room. Rachel the co-owner was so nice and incredibly patient with all my questions. And she is an outstanding baker! Bottom line: ignore the negative reviews. This is a first class restaurant with first class ownership and staff. They deserve top honors for a five star experience. The food was good. I wouldn't it was fabulous. I was really expecting to try their signature scallop dish but it wasn't on the menu last night. We started with the pate and green salad. I was expecting more. The salad was subpar at best. The pate was very nice. I tried the lamb which was very nice. My husband has chicken raging which was good so long as you put the harissa on top. Overall, I was happy with the meal but not as special as I'd anticipated. Oh well. Won't come back unless it's to the the scallop dish. read more

I believe Chez Nous is living on its reputation rather than on its present merits. We tried this restaurant twice in the past year and came away disappointed both times, more so recently. The positives - service excellent and bread that was superb. The entrees were disastrous. A salad of greens with chicken, the chicken was inedible. Two of us ordered the steaks which were served almost raw. We understand and appreciate French cooking and know how meat is prepared in France with less cooking - this was absurd however. Finally, regardless of the preparation- the meat was of poor quality and filled with gristle. Highly disappointing - not going back. read more

Quite good French fare to be found here. To start, we had the warm brie with truffle (real truffle!) on toast. A little light for two people but good nonetheless, and hell, it's truffle. I had a blood orange duck and my mother had a wild mushroom ravioli. Both were excellent and deserving of its Berkshire price tag (read: more expensive than similar fare in Boston, but you're not in Boston, so quicherbichin). Service was very quick and very good, and overall the decor and ambience was... nice. I was not a fan of the schmaltzy accordion music in the background, found it distracting and actually a disjointed choice for a place that does not really "look" like the typical French tourist trap -- nor is the food tourist-trap-y -- so the music put us off quite a bit. This place is nearly impossible to get a table during summer weekends. But, my my it is wonderful and worth the effort - we had lamb chops with a wonderful mint coulis. The house made pate platter is worth its cost. The chicken liver pate is the food of the gods - the green beans ( yes, green beans) were a revelation. It was 95 degree heat the Sat. Night we visited. We could have used some lemonade or something other than water and iced tea for soft drinks. We had a lovely frozen dessert of passion fruit and fresh strawberries. We have been going here for the past 7 years. I have to say the last 2 years have not been that great. This weekend was very disappointing. We had 6:15 reservation for 8 people. Will be a Big Bill. Ordered Drinks, I did not like my Slightly Dirty Martini. I expressed to the male waiter and his answer was Ahhhhh Ahhh. Well we use organic grown Olives and that maybe the reason it doesn't taste the same. 3 others had dirty martini's and they expressed that they didn't like them either. Now Mind you these are expensive drinks. Also(pretty small pour). He should have said Of Course Mama what would you like instead !. Then we order 1/2 plates as we have always. The First Course finally comes and then the other 1/2 plates come. I said NO NO...we haven't finished the first one. Plus with 8 people there was no room. We then waited a long time for round 2 of drinks. Even the other table of 2 said to the owner i need the check, i was waiting for the waiter. She came back with check he said DON'T LEAVE, I'll do the check right now. Bc he knew it would another 10 mins for them to come back...The Food was very Good. I had Scallops and then Short Ribs. All very good. But timing was bad and Service was off. I am not sure we will be back. I don't mind paying the high price as long as the Service is A+ and attentive... read more

Delighted to finally return to Chez nous after original visit many years ago. This restaurant is so popular during season in the Berkshires, that I'm often unable to get a Rez. Menu has definitely changed since my first visit and while my dining companions found it easy to order, I struggled. Wish it was bit more varied and a bit more classic French that I seem to recall. Server greeted us and wanted to take order for drinks but we held off til our friends arrived. Then server wanted to take wine order Skipped the appetizers (had a big salad for lunch) and decided against the $9 tomato soup. Server was a bit miffed and tried upselling and convincing me that the half order of organic chicken would be a kid's portion and encouraged me to place a full order. I declined and glad I did since my kid's portion was more than ample. Chicken was absolutely the juiciest and so tasty teriyaki flavored and grilled but my soba noodle and veggies were a bit too salty and meager portion. Chocolate dessert was perfection , salty and not too sweet combo. Tasted lamb chops and they were perfection! Just wish the server was less obvious in trying to sell. read more

I was really looking forward to a great dinner based on the reviews I've read here and elsewhere. Sadly I was very disappointed. Our friends had the New Zealand lamb chops, easily the best choice of the evening. We had the short ribs which proved in one case to be stringy, and in another case to be fatty. The short ribs were supposed to come on a bed of herbes de provence and brown rice. There was sufficient rice, but the herbs were sadly lacking, literally a couple of carrots and two slices of zucchini. Service was not great. Our waitress did not know the wines very well, and twice as she brought out different courses she mixed up the orders, not something I would expect in this level of restaurant. We were seated in the front dining room, an uncomfortable, hot room with no fans and little a/c. By the time dessert rolled around we were too hot and not sufficiently impressed by the food to warrent ordering something more. Maybe we caught them on an off-night on the night before the 4th of July, but I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

There are no words to express the exceptionality of Chez Nous. In full disclosure, I've been here before and had an equally stellar review. When I lived in the area twenty years ago there was little chance of good food in Lee. Joe's famous diner was the only destination food joint. Now there is CHEZ NOUS and possibly one or two others that I haven't tried yet. The service is that of a top class restaurant anywhere. Friendly but professional. I came to Cafe Triskele twice in the span of two weeks, once on a date and it was so good I brought my mom when she came into town the next week! I sat outside both times and it was very cute with the little lights and tables. We got a great bottle of wine and tapenade & cheese plate each time, the local cheeses were incredible, and I scraped the bowl the tapenade came in clean with a spoon if that says anything. The menu is simple and most offers on the light side, which I prefer - I had the steak salad (comes w/ beet and cabbage slaw + lettuce salad) and the duck confit. Both reminded me of something I would have had from my favorite little bistro in Paris, with perfectly executed meats and well balanced veg sides that highlight the flavor of the local produce without overdoing it on sauces etc. If you're starving get the burger, my date said the burger was good although not mind blowing, or just plan on dessert - the chocolate mousse was perfect, (chocolate corn flakes add the perfect crunch!!) with a cup of decaf; the perfect ending to a delightful meal. Would be remiss if I didn't mention the two servers I had were also excellent. Will be back next time I'm in Berkshires territory! read more

This time we were in a small room holding about six tables and it was moderately quiet. We shared the house-made pate plate with enjoyment. Perfection! This is our third time going to Chez Nous and it seems it's gotten even better! The Chef is inspired and the food was perfectly prepared...even something as simple as the spinach salad was perfect, the trout was light and melted in your mouth, the flavors subtle and delicious and the filet mignons cooked to perfection!
