What an adorable coffee house! Its super fun and welcoming. And hello! They have granitas, which pretty much seals the deal for me.

My family and I stumbled into Café Umbria so randomly, thanks to our tour driver. He stopped a block away from the café so we could get out and stretch our legs. (It was a three hour bus tour!). I know it's a café that serves coffee and really good gelato, but I was pretty hungry so I ordered the veggie sandwich with grilled eggplants, sundried tomatoes, goat cheese, and some other greens drizzled in yummy balsamic and olive oil. My brother in law ordered a meaty sandwich which I also tried. Both sandwiches were really good! The bread was very rustic and crunchy. The sandwiches were around $6 each and fairly small but it didn't matter because I was starving and we had two hours left on the bus! The staff was nice to us, smiling and letting us know our order was up soon. The restroom is located inside the building that the café is in. It was a maze to get to, and you need a key. Other than that, I was happy getting back on the bus with my yummy sandwich in hand! read more

Wow. I am still astonished at how poorly I was treated at Caffe Umbria this morning. Astonished! And this after making a very special effort to go there because of how I think of it as a bustling and friendly place where it's fun to drink my morning Americano and people watch. My dog Olive and I traveled on foot all the way from my little apartment on Capitol HIll. We had invested about a half hour of our time to get there, stopping only once (to gawk at Louis Vuitton, it couldn't be helped). When we arrived, we found the cafe almost empty. And not one employee in sight. Nobody behind the counter. No one anywhere. It was almost eerie. But, since there were four people in the adjoining room drinking coffee at tables, I stood at the counter and waited. When a young woman finally emerged from the back, she came towards me, greeted me breezily, and when I went to order my Americano, she just as breezily said, "I'll be right with you," walking hurriedly past me. I was unable to see what was urgent about her mission as I still was the only person standing there. Finally, she came back and asked for my order, bristling as if something much more important than me was agitating her. I ordered my very simple drink, a twelve ounce Americano. She acted put out. I tipped her just the same because I am generous that way. While this was going on, a group of three men came into the caffe and stood behind me, and three more employees emerged from the back room. One of these stopped to whisper with my cashier/order taker as she was ringing me up. I felt uncomfortable, like we were three teenaged girls, the two of them whispering mean things about me, the odd girl out, which I knew was silly. As I stood near the front window to wait for my Americano, I watched another employee walk past me and furiously try to post some sort of notice on the glass of the window next to the entrance. It wouldn't stick. She stormed off. What is going on, I wondered? Are they getting ready to have a private event of some sort? Are they closing the caffe this morning to do inventory? Why was everyone who works here so unhappy and stressed, and why are there so few customers? It hardly seemed worth the walk all the way from home in order to have this experience. And then they served the three men in line behind me their three Caffe Lattes while my Americano was nowhere in sight. Funny that those drinks would come up first, I thought. When I finally did get my Americano, it was every bit as delicious as I had wished for. Olive and I went out and sat on the plaza at a Caffe Umbria table to let my coffee cool, drink some of it, and look at my weather app (chilly here today!). Immediately, two of the employees came out with their notice for the window and finally proceeded to get it adhered to the outside. When I got up to leave, I just had to walk over and see what all the commotion was about with the notice for the window. The notice said: YOU ARE WELCOME TO LEAVE YOUR DOG LEASHED OUTSIDE CAFFE UMBRIA. SERVICE DOGS EXCEPTED. Really? Was this then the reason for all the whispering, rude treatment, and furious storming about? In the cafes that I often frequent, they keep dog treats at the register. If there is a sign posted that says NO DOGS. I leave Olive outside. Once in a while, when I haven't seen such a sign, an employee in the coffee house will tell me that Olive has to wait outside, and I comply, taking her right out. They apologize nicely and cite the health code, the health department, and so sorry, they say. Since Caffe Umbria is not apparently known for their customer appreciation, they probably won't care that I won't return again to experience their absurdly snotty behavior. And too bad. The espresso is truly exquisite. read more

This place is quite spacious for downtown Seattle with plenty of seating for those wanting to set up camp with a laptop. Coffee comes with a little chocolate on the side which is a cute touch. However, the coffee itself is just ok. I wouldn't return for it. read more

I just don't think their coffee is good or barista that made our coffee did a good job. Great cafe to sit and work if need be, cute atmosphere lots of natural lighting as well, some food options too. Street parking only you have to pay for. In occidental square so it is a beautiful historic area to appreciate. read more

I want to give Umbria a higher rating, I really do, but the staff deliver some of the worst customer experience. If they aren't ignoring you and talking to/amongst themselves, then they are acting as if you are making their lives difficult for ordering a soy latte. I get that a lot of cafés hire college graduates with chips on their shoulders, aka baristas. But honestly, you are making a coffee, not performing an aria. One of my favorite lines from "Absolutely Fabulous" is Edina telling a woman, "You only work in a shop you know, you can drop the attitude." I want to say this so often when I'm at Umbria. I'll gladly update my review of Umbria with a higher rating when the staff exercise better customer service. read more

I don't like coffee much, but I like this coffee. This was the coffee brewed by the late Flip Side of Woodinville, which is where I learned to like it. Now that I'm married to the former owner of the Flip :-) I drive down here to pick up beans for our freezer once in a while. I really like their decaf. The people there know what they're doing, and they're friendly and sweet. I got an iced Americano last time I went, and it was excellent. You can't do too badly at this coffeeshop; the room is lovely and the location is hip. read more

The door to Caffe Umbria is actual a door to another dimension where you are much better looking and stylish. I mean, why else is it, when I walk into this place, I want to sweep back my hair, toss my scarf over my shoulder and lean in casually on the standing-only tables with my demitasse and... smolder. We were walking around Seattle in search of a new coffee shop and found a place with not just coffee, but coffee and gelato. Wow! Yum! There were four of us in our group and between us we had espresso, a latte, and a mocha and all were very, very good. The gelato was amazing. I had chocolate chip, my husband had pistachio, my friends had chocolate and vanilla respectively. Outstanding stuff. Don't have room for gelato? Never fear. Your coffee will come with a small piece of wrapped chocolate. The service was really helpful and friendly. There are outdoor tables in addition to indoor seating, so we were able to sit outside and enjoy the day. read more

So Café Umbria is my go-to coffee shop while in downtown. I work in Pioneer Square and have Cherry St. Coffee, Zeitgeist, Tully's and Starbucks all within a few blocks of each other. So assuming that all of these places can pour a decent espresso.... Here's what I like specifically about Umbria: The People - The baristas here are some of the most down to earth and friendly staff I've encountered.... Not the overly friendly fake type of friendly, but just good down to earth genuine friendly. They have a culture all their own. The Bar - Love the they serve coffee on the bar with a spoon and plate...very euro...and reminds me of my old fav coffee shop Terrafazione when they were still around. You can down a quick espresso while standing there and be on your way. Also love how they always ask if it's for here or to go. The location - Understated. Right in the middle of Occidental in a brick road surround by trees with outdoor seating. In the summer, it was of my fav places to take breaks during the work day with my work peeps. Also, my first choice for business meetings with clients in the area. Also, as a side note... I work with a few coffee snobs and it's pretty widely agreed that Café Umbria is the spot to go for coffee in the Pioneer Square area. 2nd place would have to go Zeitgeist who also make fabulous drinks... but lack in the other areas mentioned above. Oh! So THIS is where all the beautiful Pioneer Square people lunch. Honestly, my office is less than 2blks from Caffe Umbria, and after three years, yesterday was my first visit...I was missing out. Caffe Umbria is beautiful, and is designed as a mix between an Italian train station cafe and an American cafe with plenty of seating (looks out on Occidental, the less urine saturated part). The staff is also beautiful, although the counter girl messed up my coffee order, I didn't care because she was so beautiful...and the barista quickly made the correction. My sandwhich from the case was a Pastrami on Bolo with Caramelized onions and sharp mustard...which was then put on a Pannini press. Beautiful. read more

Oh, gods, the espresso. A con panna served with a piece of dark chocolate from a seriously sexy looking espresso machine by a cute barista may very well be the best possible coffee experience. The espresso was rich and complex, the crema was thick and gorgeous, and the chocolate gave a nice sweet balance to the bitterness of the espresso. The pastry was crisp and fresh. I don't really enjoy the European atmosphere - it's a little cold for my taste, but it is the vibe they are going for, and if that is the price one must pay for delicious espresso, it's a worthy sacrifice. read more

I like this place and their coffee a lot, but not quite as much as my favorite place (around the corner) in Seattle. I don't know why, but there's a slightly sterile vibe here instead of the homier Italian Cafe you'd expect. But in the summer months sitting outside the cafe near Occidental Square, sipping your doppio or munching on gelato like the twee hipster you are, life couldn't be better. read more

Umbria was a find resulting from my first attempt at using Yelp Mobile, but even with Yelp's help I had some trouble finding this place thanks to my phone's inability to render images. Situated on the east face of Pioneer Square's Occidental Plaza, this large stylish open cafe seemed to be trying almost too hard, and as long as I had to wait for my coffee to be prepared, I was expecting something a little more. Regarding both Yelp Mobile and Umbria: "despite some problems, it has potential." That said, most of my experience here was overshadowed by a drunk (homeless?) guy out front shouting at and actually shoving a customer. One of the employees tried to intervene and another called security, and once the homeless man left, the staff offered the customer a free pastry and were nice and apologetic about the whole incident. read more

Amazing coffee, with a little chocolate piece on the side. Great vibe and lots of chatter for a coffee spot- this is someplace to be social or chat with friends, not work quietly. The lack of plugs anywhere supports that. Great service however, and beautiful drinks that are balanced wonderfully. I probably find myself eating here for lunch more than any other place near my office. Really, a roasted Caprese panini isn't that hard to do so it boggles the mind how many places can botch such a simple thing. But at Umbria it's quality, it's cheap, it's fast, you get a little cup of olives with it, and there's room to sit and enjoy your sandwich. Also, everyone who works there is really damn nice and they make top notch lattes and cappuccinos. If stumptown ever fails me on whole roasted beans (I won't hold my breath), I'll definitely try out Umbria's whole bean. read more

If you're in Seattle looking for some good coffee, then Caffe Umbria is the spot. I was on a trip in Seattle and of course on the lookout for a good cup of coffee. In fact, my entire trip was practically fueled on caffeine. One morning, I went on Yelp, typed in "Latte" and this cute little cafe popped up. Since it was walking distance from where I was staying, I decided to check it out. There were lots of people there - from groups of friends chatting around a table to men in business suits conducting a meeting at a corner table. I quickly concluded that this is a popular coffee shop, and I was so glad I decided to check it out. Now, for the coffee: Good Coffee! Hurray! Come one, come all. Definitely worth it to stop by here and get a cup of coffee or even some tea and pastries. I came here twice (one day right after the other) because I liked just lounging around with my book and sipping on some coffee and tea. The place is spacious and I was always able to find an empty table and chair to plop down on for half an hour or so. read more

Caffe Umbria's morning service stinks. During the early rush, staff tend to be snobbish and impatient. Every time I've been in there before noon, I've been treated as though my presence was an inconvenience and made to wait up to twenty minutes while the baristas screwed up my order, then acted supremely annoyed when I tried to get their attention to correct it. Every. Time. I've been back in the evenings, and it's a different world. For the most part, once the morning rush is over, the employees are very nice. The prices are almost comically high, and you have to keep an eye on them or they'll run your crossaint through the panini press. Otherwise, it's an alright place once it quiets down a bit. read more

Probably one of the best lattes I've had, didn't even need the cream and sugar (which is rare for my cream-addicted palate). Drink came with a little piece of dark chocolate and I just wish it had been warmer so I could sit outside! Price was very, very low, especially to someone who isn't from Seattle and it used to pay at least $3.25 for a cup. Knowledgeable, good-looking staff and great decor (very european in feel, lots of black, white, and yellow). Didn't have any food, so I can't comment on the quality of that. read more

I always tried out the real barista skill with the plain Latte. Cafe Umbria did impress me with that. I would make my way to Cafe Umbria whenever i am in downtown and need a cup of coffee because it is totally worth the effort I put in for the drive rather than settle for the less with one of the Starbucks around the corner. Their cofffee is awesome, but it is a bit snobby if I do say so myself. The people are really nice, not rude, but sometimes I almost feel like I am not good enough for the coffee itself. I almost want some music to play when I am handed this coffee. There is one barista there though that I love to tease my boyfriend about and say..oh...your mocha is not so good today? It's because she hates you today...because she sometimes gives him this "I hate you look on her face"...Good deduction on my part huh? They have these really yummy ham and cheese breakfast croissants, as well as some of the best gelato around! Oh and take a bag of their coffee home...it's great as drip coffee! read more

Very convenient and quaint café to go to located next to London Plane in downtown Seattle by Centurylink field. I tried this place for the first time yesterday after walking past it for a few months. I had a tall soy latte and an apricot, oatmeal cookie and I paid $6.02 for them. The latte was not worth $4.00, I got a better latte at Caffe Vita...sorry. I think I was over charged since their talls were under $3.00 and their grandes were under $4.00 but then again, I DID order soy. The cookie, however, was super yum - hints of coconut in there my favorite. I gave the place 4 stars but took away a star for their poor customer service. the lady at the register did not greet me, did not look me in my face..AT ALL..and when I ordered she acted like she was above me or she had something better to do. Sorry but you're not above anyone...you're in a customer service position so slap on a smile and serve your customers. Just saying. Other than my encounter with her, the baristas were friendly, but busy. Great atmosphere and gelado looks devine. I will probably come back for their treats, but not the coffee - overpriced. read more

This cafe is very European... to start off. I ordered a latte, and was pretty pleased with it. It could have been a little on the hotter side, but the espresso was very smooth and not burnt. I wanted something a little sweet to top it off, and the pastry selection was so so, sooo I went for a scoop of Strawberry gellatto. I loved the way they presented their lattes and gellatto. They served the latte with the lid off and the lid was placed beside it on a plate accompanied with a fabulous little spoon. I'm kind of a dork and love things like that. The service was fantastic and they even gave me some advice on a good restaurant near by. So the things that they did offer were great. I myself like my coffee shop to have a little more attitude and noise. I would recommend this place for someone who is looking for a great cup a joe and some serenity from the city. read more

Ok, Not so sure about some of the facts in the reviews on here. The gelato was not available when I went in today but that was at 10:00. I actually went in for a granita because I have been craving one for a couple of weeks. ***They don't carry granitas until the summer months.**MY SEARCH CONTINUES! I've gone here in the past and they have some nice wines by the glass you can tray. I agree that he staff isn't super-nice. I think they're a little snotty. Oh yeah. This is good coffee. Caffe Umbria roasts locally down just off of airport way. Then then truck the freshly roasted coffee to the caffe....and magic in a cup. Perfect Italian roast, not too dark. The result from their fancy Nuova Simonelli machines is a beautiful crema. Just the right amount. I don't think it is on their menu but an espresso macchiato is just perfect here. Oh and low and behold they have my most favorite of chocolates...the get-down-on-my-knees-and-worship- you oh great Fiori Chocolates that I love.... Great spot. Im a big fan of caffeine. I can geek out with most barristas about origin, taste profile, process, whatever. At the end of the day, what you want is something that tastes good. Now balance is next important. There are often tastes that you can have too much of (Doritos!) and get sick of. I think their is a slight bitterness that lingers in their roast but that's a personal thing. Overall my a macchiato Umbria style is still a great beverage and I'd go back countless times to get my fix read more

Eh. I wasn't impressed. The coffee gets three stars all by itself. I loved it. But the service was uncomfortable, and the chairs were uncomfortable, and the room seemed cold, somehow. Not a place I'd like to hang out at for very long. The restrooms are hard to get at, since they are out in the hotel. You have to leave your table to get to them, and if you are sitting there with a laptop doing some work by yourself, you are seriously risking theft because, after all, it's Pioneer Square. I think the mood was a little high brow for me, too. I like to kick back at Top Pot. Like I said, I wouldn't hang out there, but you could definitely twist my arm to get a pre-work cup of coffee. The paninis are eh. The pan au chocolat is pretty decent, if tough. Okay, okay, so it isn't Paris. I get it. But still; eh. read more

As far as a lunch place, Umbria will leave you happy but a little hungry. What I want to call your attention to, however, is their hot chocolate. A tall soy hot chocolate is my drink of choice, and I haven't had a better one in any Seattle cafe. We often get bags their beans when we're in a pinch, but Seattle Coffee Works blows just about everyone else away. read more

Cafe caringly coddles classy customers, concocts caffeine carefully! (Complimentary chocolate!) Caffe Umbria makes Pioneer Square feel like an Italian piazza. The little touches make this place: the ceramic dish for signing receipts, the tiny squares of chocolate alongside your espresso, the saturnine staff. Their desserts are a bit ascetic for my taste, but they fit the aesthetic. Best of all: this morning, Caffe Umbria showed the inauguration on their television, and the room filled with Obama's amazing speech and cheering patrons of all races, shapes, and ages. It was cozy, it was exciting, and it made me happy to be an American. Quite the tall order for a coffee shop. read more

I go out of my way to find excuses to be in Pioneer Square just to stop by Caffe Umbria. Their staff is extremely friendly, their food choices are always unique and often vegan, and they have mouth-watering gelato. Their cappuccinos are to die for, which is interesting coming from me, as I do not like cappuccinos. There are lots of small tables which are ideal for 2-3 person meetings, but not groups. Lack of wifi means more seating and a more ideal situation for curling up with a good cup of coffee and a newspaper. read more

I'm madly in love with this place. When I used to work in Pioneer Square I would come here multiple times a week, sometimes for lunch, sometimes for a break to just sit outside in the sun and enjoy a cappuccino or granita with coworkers. Did you ever play Legend of Zelda? Do you remember the fairy fountain where Link would go and his hearts would fill up? My hearts fill up when I'm here. It's one of those places that I sincerely feel is good for my soul. The baristas are super nice and have almost always given me a flawless espresso. The pastries are delicious. The lunch sandwiches and pasta are freaking amazing (mortadella!?) The gelato is creamy and delicious. You can even get a glass of wine. Overall, though, the atmosphere and experience fill me with positive vibrations. I know that sounds hokey but it's true. Like any great love, it's the small details that really make the experience. For example, they usually have soccer on the tv in the back. It's also in Occidental Plaza, which is probably the best spot to just sit around and enjoy yourself downtown. The baristas love to make hearts and trees with your foam. They use very high quality olive oil on their food. The sandwiches typically come with a tiny but delicious side of olives. The silverware and little silver fixtures on the tables are adorable. If you choose to enjoy your drink in the shop, you get to use one of their beautiful ceramic mugs or enjoy gelato on an old-fashioned silver ice cream tray. They even give you a little chocolate with your coffee! To top it off, the prices are very affordable. In fact, it's cheaper than Starbucks but it has a soul and quality the chain could never dream of offering. This is, without a doubt, the best coffee house I have been to... and I'm saying that after having lived in Europe for a while. read more

Their coffee is so good. I usually do a brew it at home but I got the latte at the coffee house. It really is smooth/delicious coffee. The coffee house is fairly large with both indoor and outdoor seating. At first glanced, I panicked b/c I couldn't see any plugs along the wall and I was there to work. Later, I did some sneak peaking behind the backs of the benches and found some hidden but easily accessible outlets. Overall, I like Umbria. It's a bit limiting to get to it if you drive to get there but if you live around there, it's a perfect spot with delicious coffee. read more

This is a great Italian coffee shop in the Pioneer Square Area. It's located almost adjacent to Occidental Park and close to the Elliott Bay Book Store. I use to come here on a daily basis as I work right down the street. However I've been trying to hold my New Years resolution of cutting my discretionary spending by 10% so I now come here 3-4 times a week instead of daily. I guess every little bit helps. One very good thing about Cafe Umbria is their coffee is never burnt, which is what you'll most often times get when you go to Starbucks. The drinks are always light and fluffy unless you ask for no foam. The atmosphere is a bit loud during the mornings so it's not the ideal place to take a date. However I've been on a weekend morning and it's quite quiet so that's probably do able. The gelato is ok, however they don't always have it in the case so if you go, you may be disappointed. Last bit of advice, get a frequent stamp card. You have to ask for one when you pay, but they do have them. Good coffee and great baristas! :) read more
