Thanks to Yelp, we found out about Caffe Umbria. LOCATION & AMBIANCE Very convenient in the epicenter of Pioneer Square. The venue is large and open, with a small patio outside that's perfect for people watching. I don't know if this was just bad luck or a common occurrence but there were a multitude of flies inside, which were quite bothersome. There's a bathroom that's shared between the businesses in the building! CUSTOMER SERVICE Customer service is kind of iffy. Some people are friendly but some seemed like they were just going through the motions of work. COFFEE I had a double con panna (2 shots of espresso with whipped cream) which came with a small piece of dark chocolate. It was nice and smooth, with no bitterness whatsoever! Good job, Caffe Umbria. My friend's mocha was decent but not my cup of tea -- err, coffee. One calm, cool overcast morning, I decided to walk here and scope it out... If you're coming from the buses or tunnel on 3rd/4th, walk through the brick and tree-lined promenade! So wonderful and relaxing + with the vintage street lamps... So, I briefly researched Morning Glory Chai to see what it comes as: I think concentrate/mix based off the site. They had here, so I wanted to try it... ugh. There's one thing I seem to notice with the tea bag variety versus the others (mix, liquid, powder): the others are more smoothly thick and the tea bag is more liquidy. Popped in for a couple of high-quality lattes on a rainy afternoon, and was blown away by the chocolate stout gelato! A local friend recommended the chocolate but the chocolate stout was a million times better. Service is polite and friendly, coffee is good, plenty of desserts and pastries in the display case, clean dining room. read more

Is it worth a 6 block walk when have coffee in the building? Hell Yes! This is the first smooth, complex, full-bodied coffee I've found on my adventure over here on the west side of the lake. My americano has the most magnificent crema I've ever seen. They have a very nice storefront, which is followed by a attractively-designed interior. There's a long black granite bar, gelato bar, and a big pastry case on the right when you come in. The rest of the store has comfortable chairs and stools to sit on. Plus they have a neat coffee roaster to look at in the corner. Also, the store was very very clean. The employees I met were both friend and engaged in idle chit chat... all in all, it was a very nice first visit. The place gets 4-stars because...I love the location. I always get a mocha and the mocha here is good. Oh, I also got a plain croissant that was warmed up but the location was what won me over not the coffee. The place is located in Occidental Square and gives this picturesque vibe. And there are little gallery shops around to peek into after coffee. Minuses about the place...it's not as cozy as I liked it to be. The name gave me the impression that the place would be a tiny, cozy cafe. Going inside, almost felt like I stepped into a Starbucks on a non-busy day. Caffe Umbria is very close to King Station and right next to the Jefferson & Occidental stop. As my first time in Seattle, I've been to 10+ coffee shops trying to explore the best coffee in town. I've avoided Starbucks coffee except from the Reserve, and realize how coffee in Seattle can be quite expensive ($4-6 for 8oz latte). Caffe Umbria however it's under $4 and it's very tasty though not amazing. I was there for few hours waiting for my bus to Portland! Wifi was quite weak, but decent. Located in perhaps the prettiest part of Pioneer Square, right by the stadiums and a few really good restaurants and artsy boutiques, is this big, beautiful open space that has delicious coffee and other things. This is normally one of my favorite cafes in Pioneer Square. Today, however, was not their best day. It's typical to expect a bit of a line for service there which is normally not a problem. Today, though, it was primarily due to the main register's card reader not functioning properly. Thankfully, Jeanette spotted this and quickly went to the deli register to help guests. I got in line behind the first customer and stepped up when the transaction was complete to place my order and pay. Jeanette ignored me and the person behind me for a long while before coming over and letting me know I needed to get back at the end of the long line at the front register, (from which I had just come). I told here I'd mistakenly seen her taking orders at this register and incorrectly assumed it was something other than a one-time thing. She told me, "i'll ring you up this time, but know in the future that you'll have to order at the front register." My response was, "Jeanette, know that if you open a register for one customer when there are many in line, other loyal customers may also queue up." This happens frequently at grocery stores and pawn shops as well. My sandwich was delicious, but the flavor of Jeanette's indignation and horrible customer service left an awful taste. I recommend that Caffe Umbria use a sign like this one in the future to prevent other loyal customers from similar mistakes like mine: read more

I really like Caffe Umbria. 4.5 stars. My friends and I were visting Seattle and we walked from Pike Place Mkt to Waterfront to Pioneer Sq. We were tired, weary, and thirsty. So, we were desperate to find a coffee house. We saw 2 locals walked by that held Caffe Umbria coffees in their hands and tried to search for the place. It was just up ahead from where we were and we love this place! Where the cafe is located...it feels European. I love the trees, the open space, the fresh air and breeze, everything! Even the espresso drinks here is good. We got cappucinos, latte, and mocha. I like the cappucino a little bit more, but the latte is pretty good too. Firstly, really really pretty location. On Occidental street, right down from Occidental park and the Waterfall Park. Across the street are art galleries and cute shops. The street is cobble stoned with benches, and people sitting around enjoying a cup of coffee. Pretty trees. To be honest, I can't say anything about their coffee, bc I got their pistachio gelato. (terrible i know :P) They also had a yummy arrange of pastries. and coffee smelled wonderful :) My gelato was really rich and creamy. Very thick. You have to get 2 scoops, but i couldnt finish it. I love stopping by Umbria whenever I'm in the area, though, especially for a macchiato and chocolate biscotti. Their seating area is spacious and lots of natural light shines through. A warning to be noted: they don't have Wi-Fi! :( It's a smart move on their part, I must say, because customers are forced to embrace their thoughtfully-made drinks and the place isn't swarming with laptops. What an adorable coffee house! Its super fun and welcoming. And hello! They have granitas, which pretty much seals the deal for me.

I'm in love with Caffe Umbria and this neighborhood. In my ideal world, I would start each day with a non-fat cappuccino from Caffe Umbria... except that I live in Capitol Hill, so that would not be practical at all. Caffe Umbria is super charming with plenty of natural light and a swanky, unpretentious feel to it. There's plenty of seats and lots of space between the tables (YAY!). My cappuccino was perfect and at 2pm, the caffe was busy but still quiet enough that we could have a conversation without needing to speak louder to drown out the chatter around us. They also have gelato, sandwiches and a variety of fancy-ass tea (the kind you would have to drink with a raised pinky). I can't wait to come back. read more
