So on my second day in New York, while checking out Chinatown I've stumbled upon little Italy. I was going to visit Little Italy but didn't realize that they were next to each other in the same neighborhood. I saw this cafe and decided to go right in based on their display of desserts. the space between tables were small, so it felt very crammed. And where I chose to sit was a downfall on my part. Apparently at the far back corner by the door, the floor has a little slant. So when I sat down, my chair was wobbly not flat. But like is said my fault for choosing that spot. Now as to why I gave them a 1 star is based solely on their tiramisu. I love tiramisu, it is my favorite cake which is why I had to order it seeing how I was in Little Italy I would presume it to be authentic. Now maybe they make it differently, but it was different from previous tiramisu that I've eaten. The lady fingers surrounding the sponge was a bit hard, almost stale like. And my sponge was completely soaked, like there was extra liquid on my running unto my plate. And my cream filling was very sweet. On top of that the presentation of my cake was very messy. My cake was lopsided and not evenly layered. So there you have it. Maybe they have better desserts but I had really high hopes for an Italian cafe to make good tiramisu. read more

It's no De Robertis, but this is pretty darn good. After a hot and steamy lunch at Thai Son, Rick and I stopped by this historic corner joint, ostensibly for coffee. We ended up getting a table and sitting down for dessert because of the wide range of pastry offerings. Rick got a coffee, black, and I got a cappuccino. He enjoyed his coffee quite a bit, but mine was just fine. I guess I like it a little stronger and less dessert-y. But the pastries were to die for. Rick got a vanilla eclair, which, our waitress says, men order more often than the traditional chocolate eclair. "I guess it's a guy thing," she says. I got the French Napoleon, one of their weekend specials -- only available on Saturday and Sunday. It's a layered cake with various cremes and frosting, and they hide some raisins or somesuch in there. I wouldn't say it was life changing, but it was pretty good right then and there. A friend and I were walking along Little Italy looking for a place to get just dessert. We saw this place which seemed nice and somehow cozy, we continued walking and came back to it. We had the chocolate cannoli with ricotta filling ( yummy!!)and an order of assorted cookies together with hot chocolate. I could say that absolutely everything was delicious!!! Loved it!! It was my first time in New York and I heard so much about Caffe Roma I had to stop with my cousin. The restaurant is cash only which was fine. What was not fine was the customer service. It felt like my experience there was rushed. The waiters gave us the check before we were able to order something else. They kept staring at us to the point where I just wanted to leave. The restaurant wasn't busy and other guests were not getting the same treatment. The coffee was great; however, I wouldn't return. read more

This place was recommended by Lombardi's for real Italian pastries. Arrived about 5 pm on a Sunday (today) for a cappuccino & dessert. Pretty quiet but within 30 minutes it was full. We sat right in line with the pastry counter so we could see everything happening behind the counter. Unfortunately we witnessed the Mgr (Sheila?) putting a croissant on a plate without using tongs or a plastic glove. Then we saw her do the same with a Napoleon using just her hands to plate it. We watched her handle money, menus, using a rag to clean tables and touching her hair in between seating customers. Only when she was putting pasties in a bag for customers did we notice she put on a servers plastic glove. In the eyes of the health department these things as violations. Just one of my favorite spots in NYC. Reasonable prices and some of the best pastries I've tried in the Little Italy area. There's usually a good amount of free seating, only minor complaint is staff takes awhile to get to your order even if there isn't a ton of people inside. read more

As a native NYorker, and one who grew up in an Italian neighborhood in Queens, I can certainly appreciate a good pastry shop. The cookies at Caffe Roma are good - but not NEARLY worth the surly, poor attitude of the waitstaff. I've been by this place twice - because I'll often give shops a second chance not to be a deep disappointment. I ordered 2 coffees and a quarter pound of cookies to go. This was in the early afternoon, and except for an elderly couple and a group of 4 tourists it was completely empty. After getting my coffee and cookies, I realized I had about 20 minutes to kill before the end of my lunch break, so I sat at one of the tables and started sipping my coffee. Instantly, a waitress snapped "These tables are for TABLE SERVICE ONLY ::gesturing to basically the whole cafe:: The sign is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU". I realize that a business needs to have an area to 'service sit down customers', but if your cafe is basically completely empty AND you have a customer who just dropped $15 worth of goods at your business, don't freakin' kick them out. Because they'll just go on Yelp and encourage other people not to waste their time on such a horrible establishment. Try Oro bakery instead that's next door - the staff there are lovely. read more

This little pastry and coffee shop in little Italy is a CAN NOT miss! It is soooo yummy I got a caramel macchiato and a tiramisu it was a little expensive for the drinks $5.95 each and to add whip cream it is an extra charge which is a little weird and they also only except cash. They also don't have a credit card machine which I find strange considering it's little Italy and there are so many tourists. Other than that it was delicious. This space can get a bit dark at night because of the dark green and dark wood that's the interior. They have some chandeliers hanging but I don't think they're functioning too well. But for me, this adds to the charm of this place. The canolli is very good here, nice recotta taste with a flaky crunch from the shell. You can't go wrong here if you are craving a canolli. I also tried the eclair that was filled with a creamy filling that hinted toward a vanilla note. Very good. Only complaint is that they don't serve regular coffee. Only espressos, lattés, cappaccinos. So I order the Caffé Americano, which is three shots of espresso with hot water in a 8oz cup. Very good substitute. If your in the area, this is a good kick back place to rest that has great Italian pastries and all in a vintage setting. p.s. one clean toilet for the whole place, which is typical for NYC. read more

Came here in the dead of winter (nothing sucks more than February in NYC). Needed some warm sustenance, so ordered an Americano and a cannoli for dessert. After (very little) persuading, we also ordered a creme brulee and chocolate gelato. One word: delizioso! Seriously, I mean this place looks so homey and authentic, and the desserts are phenom. One issue I had was the service- it seems the lady behind the counter had better things to do than to be there. We had some questions regarding what certain things were, what was popular, what she recommended, etc. Her answers were kept to one syllable and weren't really helpful. Established in something like 1891, this place has got its Cannoli recipe DOWN. Maybe this place isn't for everyone, but my friends and I found it to be a great spot to stop in for a coffee and pastry. We tried the traditional cannoli, chocolate cannoli (which was tast-tay!), the gelato, and a Neapolitan cannoli. Verdict? All yummy and large servings, but nothing to write home about. I really wanted to like the desserts here but I couldn't get myself to like one! I tried the two napoleons and their famous vanilla cannoli. They were all far too sweet for my tastes! Their famous cannoli was really spicy. Like Fireball spicy. I was definitely not expecting that from a vanilla cannoli! I'm now really unsure of what a cannoli should taste of, since this place is smack in Little Italy... I was so glad that the whole thing sort of fell apart in my hands as I ate it because I didn't have to eat the whole thing! I don't remember the names of the two napoleons we got. It was like a regular one and a Sicilian one. The Sicilian one was full of this yellow cream. Basically sugar everywhere. The other one was just as sweet. They were really forgettable, honestly. I don't remember which one, but one had a funky taste to it. Like some weird fruity taste, but I couldn't really distinguish that taste over all the sugar. Anyway, my family and I took a few bites of each but really couldn't handle it. We ended up throwing most of it away... Also, service was kinda weird here. The ladies who ultimately attended to us were nice, but the manager (I think) acted weird. He seemed really grumpy and was slow to start taking our order, basically waiting until one of his employees could get to us. Stopped by on a visit through the city, and I was amazed by the pastry selection available. I ended up getting a hazelnut cappuccino, which tasted amazing! I loved the balance of flavor and sweetness offered by the drink, and would definitely come here for another cup again. Unfortunately the red velvet cheesecake didn't have the flavor I expected, it felt like it was missing the red velvet cakey flavor common with pastries of these types. Came in for cup of coffee. The barista woman was very aggressive to my friend and I, and wouldn't really answer our questions. My friend was simply asking questions about the type of coffee they have and the beans they use. She got strangely defensive and was borderline yelling at my friend, it was really scary and uncalled for. Had a great experience here. The service was great and the pastries were very good. I went with my son and they treated him like royalty. He got to "sample" several of the cookies before we even ordered. We sat for a long time ate some very good cookies (and drank good coffee) and felt right at home. We all loved it. We got an assortment of cookies to go and they heaped in a bunch of extra cookies after they'd weidghed them. They held up well for the two days they lasted before they were all eaten. Recently took some friends here. I have been here before a couple years ago and thought some of the deserts were great. This week I took some friends there and we wanted to try out the Canolis and Cappucinos. The Canoli was pretty good. If that's the only thing I had, I would have given this a 4 star. But I was disappointed with the Cappucino. I can make a better coffee myself, at home, without an espresso machine. I don't understand why they think those are Cappucinos. Disappointing....will not be taking friends there again. I put 3 stars because the atmosphere is decent and they have some good things. But I don't consider it a great place. read more

You guys, today is a sad, sad day. This is my very first one star review, and it hurts my soul to have to be here. I really wanted to like Caffe Roma Pastry. I mean, what's not to like? Coffee, pastries, cannoli, Little Italy. Even walking in here, I had high hopes of walking out a happy customer, pleasantly sugar drunk from the cannoli I was craving. But sadly, not all hopes can be fulfilled and I left Caffe Roma disappointed. Aesthetically, it's a cute little Italian bakery and coffee shop. Rich old wood, classic coffee shop tables and chairs that seem to take us back to simpler times when we weren't addicted to our smartphones and relied on a good newspaper article or a nice long conversation for our interest and entertainment. But unfortunately, beauty was only skin deep and the service here dragged my experience in this little shop into the ground. It's not because our waiter was unkind or overly rude, he just wasn't present. We walked in and he took our order of a hot chocolate and a cannoli to share and that was pretty much all we saw of him. The woman at the espresso machine brought us our hot chocolate a few minutes later, but to our disappointment, our waiter never brought us the cannoli we ordered. We asked the woman who brought our drink to us about it and she told us that she would remind him, but she seemed irritated that we would ask and, to no surprise, that was all we saw of either of them after that. Disappointed, Yelper Mom and I picked up our bags and approached the counter to pay our bill (which we had to ask to do, nothing was ever brought to us). The missing cannoli was still on the bill, so we asked that he take it off and we were on our way to do better things. Will I return to Nolita/Little Italy? Absolutely. Will I return to Caffe Roma? Maybe. I'm hoping they were having an off day. One can only hope. read more

We were looking for Mo Gelato which my Apple maps said was in this location. It was not so we went into Caffe Roma instead. My kids immediately went to the gelato case and I went to look at the pastry case. Unfortunately I saw a big fly on top of one of the carrot cake slices. I told the girl who worked there and she wrinkled her nose and went to get a manager. I saw the manager look at the case (the fly had flown away by now) and then shrug and leave it. The case was an open case so who knows what other pastries the fly had visited. Needless to say we got the gelato. We sat in the store to eat our gelatos and watched as a customer came in, picked out the carrot cake and the lady sold it to her. Yummy. As for the gelato, my kids devoured the Oreo cookie flavor and we thought the lemon ice was pretty good. My older daughter wasn't as impressed with the chocolate ice. As you walk on your bombarded with signs that say cash only, no checks, no credit cards, no foreign currency. Well that's tacky if you ask me. Hmmmm why in this day and age would you only accept cash as a form of payment???? Ok on the pastry I ordered 2 eclairs, 1 cannoli, 1 small red velvet cheese cake mini. Plus 2 bottled waters and a hot chocolate. The eclairs were both stale, and hard. I've had better at the local supermarket. The red velvet cheese cake wasn't edible. The cannoli wasn't any thing special. The hot chocolate taste like it came from Swiss miss packet and was more hot water than hot chocolate. $25 later it's a good thing they get a endless supply constant flow of unsuspecting tourists that have no idea what they are going to get walking in the door. On the positive side the display cases look good and place looked clean. read more
