Came in for cup of coffee. The barista woman was very aggressive to my friend and I, and wouldn't really answer our questions. My friend was simply asking questions about the type of coffee they have and the beans they use. She got strangely defensive and was borderline yelling at my friend, it was really scary and uncalled for. We ended up throwing the coffee away and going across the street to Project Cozy, where the customer service is actually apparent, friendly, and inviting. read more

The two stars are just for the Italian napoleon that I liked. We were seated by a very nice guy, the girl who took our order was super rude, my friend asked for water, she never got it. We asked another lady for water she looked at us kept walking ignoring the request; the nice guy heard me and made up for it. I feel like personnel here need training. You guys, today is a sad, sad day. This is my very first one star review, and it hurts my soul to have to be here. I really wanted to like Caffe Roma Pastry. I mean, what's not to like? Coffee, pastries, cannoli, Little Italy. Even walking in here, I had high hopes of walking out a happy customer, pleasantly sugar drunk from the cannoli I was craving. But sadly, not all hopes can be fulfilled and I left Caffe Roma disappointed. Aesthetically, it's a cute little Italian bakery and coffee shop. Rich old wood, classic coffee shop tables and chairs that seem to take us back to simpler times when we weren't addicted to our smartphones and relied on a good newspaper article or a nice long conversation for our interest and entertainment. But unfortunately, beauty was only skin deep and the service here dragged my experience in this little shop into the ground. It's not because our waiter was unkind or overly rude, he just wasn't present. We walked in and he took our order of a hot chocolate and a cannoli to share and that was pretty much all we saw of him. The woman at the espresso machine brought us our hot chocolate a few minutes later, but to our disappointment, our waiter never brought us the cannoli we ordered. We asked the woman who brought our drink to us about it and she told us that she would remind him, but she seemed irritated that we would ask and, to no surprise, that was all we saw of either of them after that. Disappointed, Yelper Mom and I picked up our bags and approached the counter to pay our bill (which we had to ask to do, nothing was ever brought to us). The missing cannoli was still on the bill, so we asked that he take it off and we were on our way to do better things. Will I return to Nolita/Little Italy? Absolutely. Will I return to Caffe Roma? Maybe. I'm hoping they were having an off day. One can only hope. read more

This is the oldest pastry shop still baking in Little Italy. I go here since their cannoli can not be beat. I enjoy their seasonal bakes as well especially the St Joseph pastries and Easter breads - but I am also guilty of ordering their Italian cheesecake way too often. Definitely recommend trying this place as there are rarely any tourists in here and it just feels like a local favorite- you will not be disappointed! read more

A solid Little Italy dessert spot. It's less cliche and packed than Ferrara's and more old school. Also, one of my aunt's friends I guess knows the Ferrara family and is not a personal fan. My knowledge on this is limited. Lol. But Caffe Roma is very old school and traditional. Their Italian cheesecake isn't overwhelmingly sweet and has an insanely thick crust. It's a thicker consistency of mascarpone, you taste more cheese and cream with much less sugar. The crust is also unlike the usual graham cracker crust and I want to think its possibly traditional Italian cookies ground up. My aunt had a limone italian ice that was refreshing perfection and her friends had also ordered another Italian pastry. I have no idea what the name of it is because I had never heard of it before but it was a small round flaky and crispy dough filled with a light coating of ricotta and layered with bits of honey I believe. We had a round of cappucinnos and pow-wowed on my family's whereabouts and misadventures over the years and what everyone is up to in their lives and I took an Only One Cannoli to go. It was a pretty great make shift dinner the next day. Also, I would have taken a million photos but I only reserve the pleasure of letting my closest friends know that I'm a freak with taking photos of food. But yes, I would come here if you're looking for an authentic Italian cafe that's a little less touristy. read more

Worst bakery experience I have had on Mulberry, skip this place it's long run is done, there are better options on this street. Came on a winter night. Friend ordered cheesecake and I ordered chocolate mousse. Both were small portioned but besides that the quality was poor and the pastries were quite dry and favorless. Had to ask for a new pastry, service was not too good, non Italian staff maybe Eastern European with no warmth that you would expect from little Italy . The next pastry was still very dry, after one bite I asked for the check. Was not too busy. I have seen it packed during San Gennaro feast when owners are working. Would not return to this place . I recommend LA BELLA FERRARa across the street from most precious blood church. La Ferrera with the lights and all is okay too. No love put into this place. read more

I stepped in and immediately felt like my group and I were being watched by the staff and owner. Someone took our order and the staff just kept watching us for some reason. Like hard glaring - my group was a mix of ethnicities so I don't want to assume the owner is prejudice but I did not feel like we were wanted there. The espresso was delightful and we were rushed out it seems because the waiter ran over to give us the check without asking. I don't think I'd come back, Palermo is a much better cafe read more

This review is for the cannoli only. My husband would give it 5 stars, but since I've been eating my Gramma's connoli's since I was a wee child, I'm going to have to knock it down to 4. The filling was great, had a hint of nutmeg which was a nice tough. The shells were a bit thick but seemed to be the norm for non-home made shells. I am going to let my food snob roar here. I understand that there is a lot of history in this place, but the cannolo was crap. I understand that they make them Neapolitan style with mascarpone instead of ricotta, but it was still crap. It was sickly sweet. The filling is piped into them in advance--how far in advance I don't know, but I saw staff put out entire new trays of them that had been pre-piped. The coffee was a joke-weak, watery, with not cream or froth, and by far the most expensive I've had in Manhattan (where the coffee is expensive!). Personally, I have had far better cannoli in rural Alaska made by getting a box of the shells online and stuffing them myself. And I can make better coffee, too, and I am by no means an expert barista. read more

My brother and I were wandering all over Manhattan when we found ourselves in Little Italy. After all that walking, I needed some caffeine to pick me up. As we walked down Mulberry Street, I was looking for a place to get a dessert and some coffee, when we happened upon this place. What we found was a really quaint classic Italian pastery shop. It wasn't crowded when we stopped by, so we got a table and relaxed for a little while. I wanted a plain coffee, but they didn't serve coffee after 5pm, so I had a cappuccino instead. The cappuccino was really good, bold espresso flavor and served piping hot.. I also had a cannoli with it. This cannoli was simply marvelous. The crust was crunchy and delicious, and the filling was the gooey sugary goodness you would expect to find in a pastry in Little Italy. The table service was pleasant, efficient, and quick. The people working there were really pleasant as well. The only thing that was not so great was that their air conditioning system was not very cold. It was very warm inside. Had a cannoli throwdown. With a blind taste test, Caffe Roma's cannoli dominated over Ferrara's. Bravo! Roma's cannoli cream was delicate and fresh, albeit a bit sweet. Excellent crispy shell. PS: pignole cookies here are the best in NYC. Always fresh. Speaking as a native NYer, this is an authentic Italian bakery I wish will exist forever. read more

I agree with previous poster... for some strange reason, management and wait staff hate customers. Odd that such a hostile feeling should occur when owning a restaurant... The pastries here ARE tasty though. The hot chocolate, as creamy and chocolatey as can be. Overpriced cannoli oh my! I guess it should have been my warning when there were no prices anywhere on the baked goods when I popped in. I grabbed a cannoli, which ran me over $5, cash only, despite being pre-filled. The filling was good quality but the shell was bland and a bit stale. It was a perfectly fine cannoli, but way too expensive, even for this part of New York. Perhaps their other choices are a better value, but I'd skip this spot next time. read more

Meh. We stopped in for coffee. It was cold out, we had done a lot of walking on a day where even the NYC pavements and trees were coated with ice. We didn't buy anything, since we were already carrying around like 85 bucks worth of Italian desserts. I did check out the place, though. Seemed to be a decent offering of pastries and such, and if I hadn't already loaded up, I might have bought some here. Or maybe not, since the place where I had been shopping was so much friendlier. Coffee was good. Pressed, decanter left because it is more than a cupful. Can't think of too many things to say about coffee...either it's good or it's bad. The staff was very aloof. It wasn't crowded. Two employees hanging out with each other and having a grand ole time by themselves. We had our order taken by a woman who seemed like she'd rather be somewhere else, and the coffee was brought to our table by a man with little more than a grunt. Maybe we had that "we are tired, we need coffee, and you're not gonna get much out of us" look about us? There are so many cafes in the city. Soooo many. Horrible customer service, that blonde skinny lady was rude to my 4 years old son, the cappuccino was cold and it was basically just poured into the cup with some awful presentation. They didn't have the dessert I wanted, and their Baba Rum pastry tasted old. I've been to this place several times before and they had better days. It was not even crowded but the service was awful. To complete the awful experience, I asked for water to give to my child and it had bugs in it. I will never return and I will not recommend this place to anyone visiting NY. read more

I only go to this place to buy pignoli cookies. They sell it at $40 per pound. I usually get a quarter pound for $10 which is roughly 6~7 cookies. I found their pignoli cookies to be the best in NYC. Chewy and tasty read more

My first visit to this delightful café. Felt like I'd stepped back into time -- old New York. Really attentive and friendly staff. It was a slow afternoon and we exchanged some pleasant words. I was not happy with the service at all. We first came in and were told to take a seat anywhere, then asked to move as soon as we chose a table to settle into. When the waiter came around and asked if I had any questions, his answer to mine was "it's a cake, its good", far from any description or detail. It was a rum cake, and I didn't think it was good. I wish he could have told me that before I ordered it. And though he was there to take an order before I had time to look at the menu, he took forever to give us the check. When he did, the first indication that they accepted cash only was on a note taped to the tray. And despite the windows advertising WiFi, the network was locked. The pastries themselves weren't terrible but weren't great. There are plenty of other spots for an Italian pastry, my next time won't be here. read more

I have to say the pastries are NEVER fresh but the coffee used to be good. Now not even is the coffee the same. It's actually no better than McDonald's coffee. I have to say I will not return here. Good coffee and fresh pastries should be a given in a shop that only does 2 things. Skip this place... Go to Eataly where all the coffees are wonderful as well as everything else in the place.
