I totally walked past this place looking for it walking up Cahuenga toward Magnolia bc I didn't see the sign from across the street (it's on a wall that you only see heading away from Magnolia; otherwise you might just see the sign "cafe"). I picked up a blended mocha and a pear and feta sandwich to go for my first time here, and I was not disappointed. The blended was a great consistency - no chunks of ice, really smooth, plenty of chocolate syrup drizzled down the sides, and almost rich enough to remind me of a milkshake. almost... The sandwich was great - crusty bread, fresh pears, greens, warm creamy feta. I think it's a great pick if you want something filling, but are not in the mood for meat. And you can easily share with a friend if you're not crazy starving. I appreciated the little baggy of fresh veggies too, but what I really would have loved... pickled veges. :) I think it sounds appropriate for an ol fashion general store. The staff was really friendly, and the place was really inviting with all the knick-knacks, carefully selected products with vintage inspired labels, and plenty of little tables to sit at. What a cool place... so unexpected in LA! The inside looks like an old general store with vintage decor EVERYWHERE. I'm from Ohio w/ family in southern Ohio and KY and this place honestly reminded me of that area, which I adored.... such a different country atmosphere from the hustle and bustle of the LA city... a welcomed change in scenery to say the least. The menu was full of super appetizing sandwiches... I opted for the pear and feta, it was really good and different! I also got a coconut and ginger smoothie which was also delicious and a combination of flavors I'd never think to try. The homemade cookies looked SO good, I regret not trying them. Overall, I can't wait to return to this place, it's home-y and adorable and the food is great.. there's something for everyone here. I came across this unique lunch spot and noticed on their menu the Oscar Wylde sandwich which is curry chicken salad with cashews, a sandwich I love. After waiting 15 minutes my sandwich arrives. I noticed others after me got their orders first, mine must of been misplaced. The curry salad was delicious just my toasted bread was cold and my side of vegi's were missing their seasoning I read about. I had to go to the counter and ask them to add the seasoning which they forgot. Sandwich was tasty just bad experience. read more

I absolutely adore this place! I work across the street, and decided i will go over there to have lunch. That was back in November. I've been going several times a week ever since. I am obsessed with their carrot and apple juice. IT IS AMAZING! I am also a huge fan of their Health Nut Salad, amazing!!! Everything on their menu sounds so good. The decor is just something else. I was amazed the menu had so many choices - usually the sign of Jack of all trades, master of none mediocrity - but the food was very good in a homespun, like-mom-used-to-make way (which is hard to come by these days). The Tattoo (roast beef and bacon, yum) was all kinds of delicious. And the staff will gladly alter menu items if you're a When Harry Met Sally... everything on the side kind of person or want whole wheat instead of sourdough, etc. Wish I hadn't driven past this place so many times without stopping -- will have to make up for it in the future! read more

I've visited twice, primarily for their periodic live music. It is set up as a rustic general store. I wonder if the decorations are for sale! Both times I ordered sandwiches and drinks. The ingredients in the sandwiches have been incredibly fresh and delicious. Wash down those bites with an uncommon beverage. Prices are fairly reasonable too. This is a really cool little spot. No need to give you the details since the other yelpers have described it perfectly. I was here at night for a music gig so i will focus on the description of it's nightlife. I was invited here for a Singer and Song Writer Sessions. The performers ranges from amateur to professionals that have written hits for music icons from pop to country music artists. Tonight's theme was country music. All are welcome. Not sure how to get a spot to perform as I was invited here by one of the artist. This event is an ongoing event here at HGS. Call the store for upcoming show and schedules. This is a really intimate venue with professional sound set ups. The acoustic of this place is fantastic. The mic and speaker quality are very nice. You can tell, it is operated by the pros, because I did not have hear fatique after 2 hours which are the results of bad EQing with high pitch trebles and noisy bass box. The vocals where crystal clear (granted it is mainly vocals and guitar). Nevertheless, you can hear every sound details coming from the performance. Street parking and seating is limited so get here early. We also ordered up some munchies during the performance. To our surprise, my Pesto Chicken Sandwich and wifey's Turkey Sandwich (with multi grain bread) was delicious. Wow, flavor and quality is almost up there with Joan's on Third. Best part is, you don't have to pay premium prices for the food. We didn't have time to try other offerings from the menu but we will definitely be back for lunch. Hallenbeck's is a little gem in NoHo serving up fantastic live indie venue and great food. Wow, what a combo. Now the Staple center can learn a thing or two from the quality of HGS. Guys, this place is just great! It's easy to miss, as it is located on a street that goes un-noticed. I stopped by this place the other day for some lunch and just loved it! When you walk in you feel like you stepped into some southern house or some western saloon that caters to only the finest cowboys in the land. So much cool stuff inside, the ceiling covered with hanging baskets and pots and pans, sattles chillin on the walls and a cool fireplace thingy in the middle. There is also a small stage up front surrounded by barrels and other festive things. They do open-mic stuff on Tuesdays I believe and I would love to come back for that! They are great at making sandwhiches here, with a awesome selection of all different types. I ordered the Blue sandwich which was warm and delightfully filled with blue cheese and other festive things. It was great! Lovely friendly staff here that says they have been there for 20 years! Who knew?! I would defeintly recommend coming here for some lovely coffee and lunch or if you instagrammers want to take some rustic pictures of a cool little place. I was hanging out with a couple of friends of mine who happened to live behind the alley of the Cahuenga general store. When I mentioned to one of them that I was hungry, he said "do you wanna have one of the best sandwiches you ever had in your life?" Always up for a new challenge, I said sure tell me where. So across the alley I went into the back door of this quaint little restaurant. The place was so cool with all kinds of different old school memorabilia of all different sorts around. I opened the menu to see what was available and boy, it took me a while to figure out what I wanted. Some unbelievable & creative combinations that all looked amazing. My other friend had asked me to get him a Frankenstein sandwich and after looking at the menu for about 10 minutes I finally decided to order two. Uum Uum Delicious.!!! We both got them on ciabatta bread toasted. So good!!! Turkey, bacon, mayo, tomato, red peppers and all on a good sized sandwich. the side cucumbers and carrots with salt and pepper sprinkled on it is the perfect touch for a bite of something healthy. In the end two good size sandwiches, one bag of chips and some carrots and cucumbers for around 20 bucks. Tasty, delicious, good service, great ambience and so convenient. I came here with a friend for lunch one day and while the food is good (I ordered a tuna salad) what throws me off more than anything else is the decor. I'm a grade A slob, my apartment is a complete mess, but there's a difference between cluttered and dirty and this place just felt dirty. It made me uneasy and definitely not in the mood to ingest nutrients. Maybe take a shower. I asked my cohort to eat outside and he had no issue with it. and so immediately felt better, but was soon thereafter beset upon by a crowd of smokers and their cloud of smoke. I give this place a 3. When I walked in, I could've probably started with a 4 star review. The inside was adorable and 1920's Little House on the Prarie-esque. The sandwich choices looked great and it wasn't that expensive either. The reason why my review dipped was because of the service. It probably took 40 minutes for our sandwiches to arrive. I also probably would have never gotten my lemonade if I didn't ask for it (since that was also 15 minutes late). Hopefully next time the service will be better. I wouldn't make a special trip just to come here, but if you are already in the area, it's the best place around. Cobb salad was super tasty. Lots of bacon and fresh vegetables. This quaint little place had been passed many times by me without giving a care. But my girlfriend has a knack for finding these places so we stopped by and decided to see what they had to offer. Walking in was like walking either back in time or back into any little place in Austin, TX. I was a little perplexed by the decor but settled in because I usually judge on food and not decor, that's her department. We ordered corn chowder and I believe the Bleu Bird, described as "Grilled chicken, bacon, bleu cheese, fresh apple slices and glazed onions on a toasted French roll." Both were extremely delicious and were hard to put down. The sandwich for me was the highlight, the mix of flavors just punched me in the face because I hadn't thought of it before.
