I had the Bruce Li roll which had tempura shrimp topped with crab meat, salmon, tuna, spicy mayo and unagi sauce. I also 2 pieces of the Hamachi (yellowtail), miso soup, and spicy edamame. The fish was some of the freshest I've ever had - flavorful, definitely sushi grade, and I could tell that it also wasn't previously frozen due to the color and texture. The miso soup and the spicy edamame were well-seasoned and delicious. My nephew had a combination plate with orange chicken, broccoli beef, and chicken fried rice. One thing to note that was really nice is that the restaurant allows you to create your own combination plates, they're not set items with no substitutions. When our waitress brought my nephew's combo plate, the food looked freshly cooked and delicious! He ate every bite! I'll start by saying that I REALLY wanted to give 5 stars , but in good conscience, I could not. Read on to find out why. This place is a hole-in-the-wall, hidden in a very small strip mall at the corner of College/Bowen I believe. Now, there is nothing wrong with a hole-in-the-wall. In fact, some of the best food in California comes from holes in the wall. But, I digress! Let me get on with the review. The customer service was top notch, 5/5. I believe I met the owners, and I am guessing a husband/wife team. Both very friendly, engaging and were excited for me to try the food, which would come later. The price point 4/5, initially seemed kind of high. That is until I got the food home and saw the portion sizes. They did NOT skimp on the portions which balanced out their price point. In fact, the food packages/containers could barely stay closed. THE FOOD! I ordered (3) 2-ways, with an ala carte pork chop and a side of Mac and cheese. (2) of the 2-ways were ordered with 4-prawns and 4-chicken tenders. The (3rd) 2-way was ordered with 4-prawns, 2-tenders, and 2-catfish. - The Pork Chop 4/5. The chop was fried in a light batter coating and was well seasoned. It was a little thin for my taste and was almost overcooked, not quite, but almost. I say that because a small section was a bit dry, while the rest of the chop was tender. - The Mac N Cheese 3/5. I bought this for my son, but I had to sample it. It was an ample portion for a single person and frankly might be enough for two people if you're having it with a 2-way meal. So, I took a spoonful. Immediately I noticed it was kind of dry as I scooped my spoonful. There was a lot of cheese that was kind of stringy rather than creamy. That's what typically happens to Mac N Cheese when it sits for too long. The noodles absorb all of the moisture leaving the dish dry and with stringy cheese , rather than with melty, creamy cheese. But, I took my bite anyway. Right of the bat I tasted salt. This was over salted IMHO. HOWEVER, it had great flavor. I bet the Mac N Cheese was the bomb when it came right out of the oven. My son didn't have any issues with the Mac N Cheese and thought it was good. - The Chicken Tenders 4/5. These were battered and fried. The batter slightly thicker than the pork chop batter and also seasoned well. The tenders were crisp and crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. Anyone who likes chicken tenders will like these. - The Prawns 1/5. The 1/5 stars for the prawns is a little misleading. The prawns were fried in a batter (I think) that was lighter than the batter on the tenders. But, I couldn't figure out of it was the same batter with maybe a little corn meal. In any case, I took a bite and BAM! WAY TOO MUCH SALT! I didn't say anything to my wife because I wanted to see her reaction. She bit into the fried prawn, her face crinkled, she set the prawn down and said, "I can't eat this." When I asked why she said, "there is WAY too much salt!" I agreed. But, let me tell you about the rest of the prawn. The outside was crisp with a little crunch and the inside was oh so tender. These prawns were cooked to PERFECTIONL! - The Fries that come with the meal 1/5. They are crinkle cut fries and DO NOT travel well. Stale and inedible! - The Catfish 5/5. BEST OF SHOW! Calling this catfish perfect is an understatement. There cornmeal dredge created the perfect crust and was perfectly seasoned. The catfish was crispy and crunchy on the outside, light, flaky and moist on the inside. My wife doesn't like catfish, but I made her try it. Now she wants more. Believe me when I tell you this catfish is competition worthy. Overall, with the exception of the fries, the food travels well. This place has LOTS of potential. I would not change a thing with the catfish. I would go easy with the salt on the tenders. They came close to being too salty. AND I would definitely cut the salt with the prawns. As for the fries, I might look into a better quality French Fry (not crinkle-cut). Something else that would help the food travel better, would be to punch holes at the corners of the food container to allow for steam to escape. This will help the fried food to stay crispy/crunchy even longer. I will say it again, this place has lots of potential. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone with my 2-cents. What do I know? I am just a foodie and I will be back.
