Delicious and fast!! We went for breakfast on Christmas Eve and were delighted that they were actually open on a holiday!! We arrived pretty early and did not have to wait for a table, which we've had to do many times before. Our waiter was quick and friendly and got us our food right away. As always, the food did not disappoint. I'm not sure if they've recently redone their menu, but they had a lot of Benedict option so I went with the fried chicken Benedict!! It was fried chicken on a poached egg and slices of bacon on a housemade biscuit all topped with housemade gravy!! Yum!! It also came with a side of home fries. An offense to Cajun food. If you're from the South, do NOT assume this is anymore than a greasy diner with offerings from our side of the Mississippi. I would venture to guess this family owned business has never been to Louisiana, or they would know Cajun food is filled with bold and spicy flavor, of which my order severely lacked. If they had gone to the South, they would know biscuits are light & fluffy on the inside with a little crisp on the outside, unlike these doughy, dense disasters. They would also know country gravy on biscuits are filled with flavor from meat grease AKA roux, hence the French influence in Cajun cooking. Sausage pieces, not what looks like artificial bacon bits, help enrich the gravy for a full, spicy satisfaction. The added hash browns were no better. They were more like mashed potatoes that had been browned, not even crisped on the outside with the only flavor was old oil which lingers on your tongue, rounding out the most disgusting breakfast I have ever endured, coming nowhere in the ballpark of comfort food. I would suggest ordering California/Mexican/diner menu options as Cajun cuisine is a beautiful mix of French and Southern perfection. Honestly, the Waffle House is far superior as a diner. The jambalaya was a knockout, perfect amount of spice in the sausage and ultimately great flavors. The only let down for me (why only 4 stars) was the cornbread. It just didn't seem very moist, and so I actually dipped it into my jambalaya which was good enough for me. You can choose a biscuit instead, so that may be a better choice with that particular meal. I'm vegetarian and I usually have a hard time finding breakfast spots that don't have boring vegetarian options as well as delicious options for my fiancé who's not vegetarian. I got the chilaquiles and they let me substitute the sausage for soyrizo- first let me add that I'm Mexican and I have high standards for chilaquiles, but these exceeded my expectations. Love this place!!!! It's a cute little cafe that's within walking distance so we stop by here every time I visit. The first time we came for breakfast and they asked us if we wanted coffee, we both said yes thinking it was free but it wasn't (sigh). We ordered crawfish etouffee and the jambalaya and since they knew we were sharing, they even split it for us! The jambalaya was good but the etouffee was excellenttttttt. Cajun Kitchen is popular among locals and tourists alike. It gets crowded, and the seating is very limited. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, so keep this in mind if you are planning a visit. You will most likely wait for a seat, and the waiting area is located outside just beyond the entrance. For some reason the wait is not as long as you would imagine it would be, which is a good thing. If you are not familiar with Santa Barbara, it is chilly in the mornings, even in the summer. Nevertheless it would be a good idea to have a jacket with you. I was here for breakfast and had the Denver omelette, and I will admit I was a little disappointed. Someone in my party had the Cajun Chicken, upon sampling it, perhaps I should have ordered that instead? My main complaint is that the service was sluggish. After placing my order, it took about 35 minutes to bring our food, and even then it was brought out at different times. If left some of us wanting to be polite waiting for the rest of the food to come out, while the food on the table was getting cold. In Cajun's defense, they did come around for refills, etc. Tips: The parking is limited, so I suggest parking at Paseo Nuevo, which is catty-corner from Nordstrom. There is a large underground parking structure that will save you from the stress of waiting for a parking on the lot, or driving around searching for a street parking. Also, I was a party of 9, and they add gratuity to your bill with large parties such as mine, as most restaurants usually do. I did not see this disclosure on the menu, and am not aware of at which number of your party places you on this mandatory gratuity. Being a former server from my college days, I am understanding of this. However, when the service is lackluster, this is something that should be able to be challenged. read more
