Delicious creamy Christmas Yule Log 2025!
    Karen L.

I had the Best Yule Log for Christmas! It was so delicious it was the hit of our Christmas dinner. The presentation was beautiful and the taste was chocolatey and the middle had a delicious creamy middle with a surprise delicious crunch in it! Thank you so much and I will see you next year!!!!

Stopped by on Mother's Day and luckily got the last Mom mini cake. Although my mom did say it was a little too sweet for her liking she liked it. The passion fruit cakes were delicious. My brother ate the berry crumble one. I was told that the mom cake was berry crumble as well, but it turned out to be slightly different. Regardless, Cake Monkey is my go to spot. There was meter parking up front. Not too busy on a midday.

I've always had a sweet tooth for dessert after a good meal. However since I am celiac for 26 years, I've had to lower my expectation of what desserts I can indulge in. In the last five years, there have been a number of bakeries and patisseries that have finally mastered preparing gluten-free desserts. The Cake Monkey on Beverly Boulevard near Fairfax Boulevard offers a number of gluten-free treats that satisfy any cravings I might have. On this occasion I ordered the Gluten Free Pumpkin Loaf Slice and Gluten Free Mixed Berry Loaf Slice. I have alternated taking mini slices from both and they both are delicious. I had a very nice conversation with the friendly server at the counter which enhanced the experience. While some have said that "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", there is no hiding the excellent desserts with this Cake Monkey. Who knew primates make great gluten free dessert?

Where to start with Cake Monkey? How about yes...yes to everything here! I tried Cake Monkey for the first time today and it was all amazing. What I love about this bakery starts with owner loving what she does (and it shows). The employees were all so nice, and Lisa was great about recommendations and giving insight as to what her favorite items were. I had the sage cheddar croissant and it was light, cheesy, and satisfying. Sage was the wildcard flavor, but it worked with the cheese and croissant perfectly, and didn't overwhelm the overall flavor of this delicious croissant. On to the cakewich(es), which are beautiful, delectable, flavorful, and unique to Cake Monkey. This is the first time I've seen mini personal cakes wrapped like a ding dong (for those old enough to know what those are), and I appreciate being able to use the word delectable in a review. Cakewiches are a great size for satiating a sweet tooth without making you feel guilty for treating yourself. There are a variety of flavors from peanut butter/marshmallow (insanely good) to pink lemonade (refreshing and big flavor) and raspberry red velvet. I also tried the chocolate marshmallow pop pie (homemade pop tart) and to be honest I wish I could have picked one of each flavor. It was sweet without being too rich, chocolatey, and the pastry was baked to perfection. Everything at Cake Monkey is delicious, decadent, gorgeous, and fun. They have unique takes on everything from matzah brittle to pop tarts and ding dongs, and each cake, pie, cookie and bar will make you want to devour them all. Cake Monkey also has several vegan and gluten free options...with some items being both vegan AND gluten free. If you want to TREAT yourself (see what I did there?), get to Cake Monkey right away. I appreciate that they have online ordering and you won't be disappointed with anything you get. Now, I'm off to go walk 25 miles and make up for this splurge...but it was worth it!

    Blueberry Lemon Frangipane Pie

I stopped by on a weekend afternoon and tried the blueberry crumble pie and cinnamon doodle cookie. Both were decent, but didn't have oomph of flavor and texture that would make me want to come back. Of the two, the pie was my favorite.

4+ fun, little bakery, located in the Fairfax area. I came across this place because I was on the way to my friends birthday and was looking for pies. The folks here were super friendly and helpful. When I came in, I looked around and they had a bunch of small handheld pies or pop pies available. They also have these mini cakes. I ended up getting a few of the mini cakes and the pop pies. All were delicious and were a hit at the gathering. I also got a small chocolate cupcake for myself. It looked like one of those hostess dingdong's. Super moist and yummy. I found parking pretty easily. It was in the middle of the day. It is on a frenetic street though, so it could be stressful to parallel park. I think you could park around in the neighborhood close by. Definitely would recommend if you're looking for some small baked goods with a great quality either for yourself or to small gatherings.

100% recommend! Was in the mood for a triple berry cake for my birthday celebration. Sweet Lady Jane came to mind but was had not reopened yet and found Cake Monkey online. It did not disappoint and exceeded all expectations, super easy to order online, pick up was easy and the cake was beyond perfect and delicious. Keep up the great work Cake Monkey team! Will be back!

Hands down a really good bakery! Came here Sunday craving something sweet. Decided on a vegan lemon poppy bread slice. It was so delicious. It had just the right amount of sweetness. The lady who took my order asked if I was ok with an end piece which didn't bother me at all. I was surprised at how big that piece was. Definitely coming back to try more stuff.

I wasn't the biggest fan of their vegan chocolate cake. It tasted to me like boxed chocolate cake you can get anywhere. The cake whiches are really really good. My son loved them. We'd go back for this, perhaps. It's a cute place. Street parking is available. Kinda pricey.

    Virginia B.

Such a cute bakery and the staff is incredibly nice and helpful. I love that they also carry gluten free and vegan options! I got the chocolate strawberry cakewich (vegan & gf) and a strawberry pop tart. The cakewich was amazing! I couldn't even tell that it was vegan and gluten free. It was also the perfect amount of cake- not too much and not too little. The pop tart was buttery and the strawberry jam inside was perfect. This bakery nails it with presentation and taste!

Wake Monkey sandwich cookie, side view
    Mike C.

Piggyback, anyone? Given my current size and weight, I'm normally the one giving them but, at my age, I'm more than willing to hop on someone else's suggestions. As I studied their menu on Locale, my lean favored the chocolate items. I first tried the chocolate pudding cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dO7wMipVD_yyI2Ovq6ZZ0A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the order listing describes it as a decadent chocolate cake, soaked in a rich chocolate custard and Cake Monkey's Caramel and Marshmallows. It reminded me of Rocky Road with those ingredients but richer. It took two sittings to finish this and it is definitely a dessert item to accompany a hot cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk. The next try was the Wake Monkey sandwich cookie (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=7vbMAwLPHlJ78Ge6A_tCvg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the description reads a rich, fudgy cookie with flourless chocolate and toasted pecans. It's filled with a coffee-infused buttercream. Again, this sweet is probably best eaten as a dessert with the same accompaniments as the cake. The coffee flavor in the buttercream was subtle, allowing the chocolate to dominate. Think of this as another decadent dessert. I finished with the Lil Merri's (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=T_BVTQRZZbXmpbQtymfXIg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), titled as "voted #1 cookie in LA Magazine". It's described as an oatmeal cream pie sandwich filled with a creamy maple vanilla buttercream. This was a welcome change, a lighter sweets choice. It is pretty large still and filling so it took two sittings to finish it. I would order again, likely getting another Lil Merri's and trying something else on their menu. Guess I'll need to study more thoroughly next time.

I've visited Café Dulce in Little Tokyo before, and I usually enjoy stopping in, especially when…read moreI'm in the area with my two kids. The drinks and pastries have always made it an easy place for us to grab a treat, so I'm not writing this based on one random first impression. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing enough that I felt I needed to say something. When we came in, the trash cans were overflowing, and the floor looked like it had not been cleaned in quite some time. I understand that cafés can get very busy, especially in Little Tokyo, and I never expect a place to look perfect every second of the day. However, the dining area felt noticeably neglected. With two children, cleanliness is something I pay closer attention to, and it was uncomfortable trying to find a clean area for us to stand and sit. The overall atmosphere also felt disorganized. We waited at the register for help, but it took a while before anyone acknowledged us. A simple "I'll be right with you" would have made a big difference. I have had better experiences here in the past, which is why this visit stood out so much. I'm hoping this was simply a bad day, because Café Dulce has always been a place I was happy to visit with my family. I'm sharing this because I would genuinely like to see the cleanliness and customer service return to the standard I remember. Private Feedback for Management I did not feel comfortable putting the full details of this experience in a public review, but I believe management needs to be aware of what happened. While I was standing at the register waiting to order, the male employee working there was engaged in a conversation with another person and appeared to be openly gloating about drinking while on the job. Based on what I heard and observed, he also appeared to be impaired or intoxicated. He continued the conversation while ignoring me, even though I was standing directly in front of the register waiting to place an order. The tone of the conversation was not subtle or professional. It created a much darker and more uncomfortable atmosphere than what I would ever expect from a family-friendly café. I was there with my two children, and hearing someone behind the register casually talking about drinking while working was deeply concerning. Someone who appears intoxicated while operating a register and handling customers' money creates a terrible narrative for the business. It raises concerns about judgment, accuracy with transactions, food-service safety, and the overall professionalism of the workplace. Even if the employee was exaggerating or joking, it was still completely inappropriate to have that conversation openly in front of customers. What bothered me most was not only the conversation, but the fact that I was being ignored while it continued. I was waiting to spend money at the business, yet the employee seemed more interested in talking about drinking than acknowledging a customer. As a mother standing there with two children, the situation felt uncomfortable, disrespectful, and honestly a little disturbing. This is not my first time visiting Café Dulce, and I have never felt compelled to complain before. I understand that employees are human and that businesses have difficult days. However, the combination of overflowing trash cans, a dirty floor, being ignored at the register, and an employee appearing impaired while discussing drinking on the job crossed a line for me. I am sharing this privately because I believe management should have the opportunity to address it directly. I hope the situation is taken seriously, not only for the reputation of the café, but for the safety and comfort of the customers and employees.

A small piece goes a long way, making them perfect for savoring over a couple of days (if you have that much self-control!). We tried the nikuman and curryman, and both were outstanding! The nikuman had a meat (chicken?) and veggie filling that was crunchy and slightly sweet and salty, while the curryman had a traditional Japanese curry filling that was tasty with the perfect amount of spices. They perfectly warmed both body and soul on a chilly LA morning. If I lived nearby, I'd eat these every day! We also tried the yuzu cream pan, which was also pretty epic. The topping was a little crunchy, complementing the soft bread and creamy and smooth tart filling. This is definitely my new favorite Japanese bakery in the US! I just wish I lived a little closer to it.

There were so many options, and everything in the display case looked fresh and tempting. The pastries I tried were really delicious -- soft, flavorful, and not overly sweet. It felt like the kind of bakery where people actually care about quality instead of just making things look pretty. The vibe inside was cozy and relaxed, which made it easy to slow down for a bit and enjoy everything. It's definitely the kind of place I'd come back to whenever I want good pastries and coffee without going somewhere overly trendy or complicated.

They're also very on-trend, whenever a Korean dessert goes viral, they usually have it here. Recently, they even started selling butter tteok, and I heard it was one of the first places to have it in K-town. I highly recommend the salted bread. Honestly, I think it's even better than the famous spot everyone talks about. My favorite is the corn cheese, it's especially delicious when it's warm. I also tried the Korean chamoe (melon) smoothie, and it was very refreshing. It tasted like they used real melon, since there was a slight natural tanginess that made it even better. There is free parking, though the lot is a bit small. They also have both indoor and outdoor seating, but the seating area is somewhat limited too

I got a sausage bbang, a chocopie, and a dalgona latte. The sausage bbang was soggy on the bottom and honestly tasted like it was from the day before. The chocopie barely had any filling, just a thin layer of marshmallow and jam. It honestly felt like they used most of the marshmallow for their Dubai choco cookie because it's probably more profitable, instead of properly filling the chocopie. If that's the case, it's better not to sell it at all than serve something like that. The dalgona latte was also disappointing. With ice, the drink only filled to the bottom third line of the cup marking. Clearly, they skimped on the milk. There was also a weird moment when I paid. My total was $15.25 and I paid cash, but I was given $4.75 in change. When I said it should be $5, she seemed confused and asked what I meant. I told her I literally gave you a quarter right now, and she questioned it before eventually giving me the correct change. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume it was a mistake. I understand times are hard, but charging more for products that clearly had corners cut doesn't sit right with me. It just comes across like there's no integrity. Clearly the quality and portions are going downhill. I wasn't even planning on writing this review. I was going to stay quiet, but the chocopie really ticked me off. I'm not going to pay for food that skims on ingredients and shortchanges customers by charging more for less, so this will be my last visit.

And I know that vanilla cupcakes with buttercream frosting is pretty easy to make, but sometimes I'd rather just buy baked goods than make them for myself, especially when I'm driving past what I thought was a popular (and presumably good) bake shop. I expected a high-quality cupcake. The cupcakes looked cute, but they were as dry as the Sahara. They should have been labeled as white cupcakes as I didn't detect any vanilla in them. I suspect that the "buttercream" was made with milk and margarine and powdered sugar.....so much powdered sugar. It was sickeningly sweet, and it was dry too. And a true bettercream doesn't even use powdered sugar. So not only were the cupcakes terrible, they were not even what they purported to be. This is like calling a cut of meat a filet mignon and serving a hamburger. Von's, Ralphs and Albertson's make better cupcakes than this for a fraction of othe price.
