We visited Cali Spartan Mexican Tacos on a Friday around lunch. There was a good amount of parking available in the lot, and the staff was very friendly. We ordered the Soft Tacos and Quesabirria. The Soft Tacos were especially flavorful, and the Quesabirria was good as well. I also mentioned a food allergy, and the staff communicated clearly with me about the options available, which I really appreciated. I didn't know they opened another spot in South SJ. It's nice because it is not as busy and crowded as the one in Downtown. The menu is pretty much the same and they take card here! We came at around 8pm and it was still pretty packed considering where it was. One other thing I wish they were able to give back was allowing takeout orders to pack thier own sauces and sides. So happy they expanded to this location! I've always enjoyed their reasonably priced tacos, and the food is just as good as always. Even better, this location takes cards, which is definitely a plus! I'm specifically writing this review because of Nathaly, who took care of our table. She was so attentive and friendly, checked in on us frequently to make sure we had everything we needed, and just had such a warm and welcoming aura. The other employees working at the cashier were also very nice and helpful. I'd definitely come back to this location--not only for the food, but for the friendly service and the much better parking situation compared to their downtown San Jose location. My friends and I ended up at this Cali Spartan on San Felipe Rd after seeing how busy the downtown location was. This spot is in a nice plaza with plenty of parking. There are lots of tables inside and outside. Staff was super nice and attentive. We ordered the Cali tacos, regular tacos with pastor, and super tacos with both asada and pastor. My regular tacos were so delicious! Literally gone within 2 minutes. My friends also scarfed down their orders. We loved how loaded the Cali tacos were. They gave us so much fries!! My friend and I chose to sit outside this past Saturday around lunch time. We informed the host and seated ourselves immediately upon arrival. Service was slow. We ordered the little mermaid burrito with fish & shrimp and no avocado or beans, and the super burrito with chicken and no pico de gallo (got the wet burrito for $1 more). The wait ended up being half an hour, and our items were not even served at the same time. My friend's wet burrito actually took about 5-6 minutes longer. Staff didn't even acknowledge the delay. These burritos were fat and stuffed with fresh and flavorful ingredients. They were definitely good, but not "30-minutes" good. I'm not faulting the restaurant for being busy, perhaps with takeout orders. But I can get similar dishes elsewhere twice as fast, even on a weekend. Hence why I didn't give 5 stars. read more

Second time here. I ordered a super burrito and made it wet for $1 more . I came around noon on a Saturday and I was disappointed the food took 30 MINUTES . My friend ordered the mermaid burrito with fish and shrimp. I don't know why it took so long . Maybe the fish didn't get caught . Sparcos is always my go-to Mexican spot in the South Bay. This location is super clean and new inside. We came on a Friday night at around 7:30pm, and the restaurant was mostly full, but there were still some empty tables open. Service is quick, and there's the self-serve station for cilantro/onions/radish/lime/salsa. I always get the Cali burrito since there's fries inside. It's always fresh and warm and, in my opinion, a good portion. Didn't get it this time, but the sopes and tacos are also some of my favs. Will be back! read more

Their 2x meat burrito (Al Pastor y Asada) always satisfies and their portion sizing is superb for a real eater such as myself. (Also never order the lettuce in your double meat burrito, it ruins it in my opinion) Next, their Birria Burrito was pretty good as well! It has deep flavor especially with the dip that it is paired with but was a tad bit more oily than the other burritos. The Cali Fries were very good, they certainly loaded it up & it's a great option to get when you are craving that supplementary crunch! Finally the last item was the chicken quesadilla. It was as good as you would expect but the flavor may be a bit bland compared to the other dishes ordered. JD Big Back Tip: If you order the Cali Fries stuffing the fries into your burrito, taco, or quesadilla adds a great extra crunch in each and every bite. I love Cali Spartan, I recommend this spot to everyone! I've been to the downtown San Jose location, blossom hill location, and this location plenty of times and it always hits. I usually get the big crispy tacos which are delicious. Perfect crunch from the crispy shells, flavorful toppings, kick from the orange sauce, and juiciness from the meat. I ordered the Milanesa plate and it was not good. The breading was coming off, there's absolutely no crisp, and zero flavor. I've had amazing Milanesa in tortas at other establishments but it doesn't go well with rice and beans here. However, the rest of our meal was adequate and I think this place is great if you stick with the non-plate dishes. Food (3 stars) + Crispy tacos look pretty good for $15 and my friend seemed to enjoy it + Nachos meats are on the drier side but if you put their orange sauce it's pretty bomb + Orange sauce has a nice smoky flavor and spicy. It beats La Victoria. My favorite sauce! ~ Birria burrito is a good size and nice balance of beans and tender beef - Milanesa does not work for me and for $22 I felt like I threw my $ away - Refried beans is lacking depth in flavors. Ordered takeout I enjoyed the birria and carne asada super burritos from Cali Spartan. They were tasty and had plenty of meat, though not as tasty as the burritos from the downtown location. Michelada shrimps were bland, overcooked and the sauce tasted identical to tapatio. They also do not have good packaging for them so the sauce will spill out of the container. The rice was also very dry and had an undercooked and floury taste. While they have an unlimited salsa bar for dine-in customers, they are oddly stingy with their salsas to-go. If you want a salsa verde, you will need to trade them one of your other salsas.. Another odd limitation - they absolutely refuse to put chips on the side for nachos. I often order nachos like this so they don't get soggy during transportation, and have never had an issue with any other taquerias read more

While the tacos are still delicious, I did find that the service and food quality weren't quite on par with the DTSJ location. The table we were sitting at was right in front of the restroom which is a bit awkward since people had to squeeze through...I wouldn't recommend sitting there. I always order three little crispy tacos (two pastor, one asada) with a side of rice. Our order took less than 10 minutes to come out. I LOVE the rice here, but today it was a bit overcooked. The crispy tacos, however, were as amazing as always. We did have to ask three times for mango salsa since it was accidentally given to the table in front of us. I wish their salsa bar had containers so we could grab sauces while waiting for our food. Who wants to unpack their order to throw cilantro, onion, etc, on top of their tacos after waiting like 20 mins. This was a bummer as I didn't end up grabbing anything for my tacos since I headed next door to grab a tea while waiting. The bro in law was already in the car with our order when I was done, so I didn't go back into the resto. Otherwise, the crispy tacos here were good. I got a carnitas burrito for the hubby and he said it was a good size. It actually ended up bursting. He did note, there was a lot of rice and the ingredients weren't evenly distributed. I did have a weird communication issue with the cashier. When asking if I could get different meats on the 3 crispy taco combo, she said yes. When I picked my meats and went to order, she said we don't have a crispy taco combo. Weird, but I kept clarifying and she finally understood what I meant. I pointed to the menu and everything before she said no, so not sure what the mix up was. There was something else that happened with payment that I don't quote remember, but suffice it to say, ordering was a challenge. Idk if they have online ordering or anything like that, but I might call in my order next time. With the wait and miscommunication, at least I'll save some time. It's so close to the SJ home, I'll most likely come back again. Very convenient spot to grab tacos when the craving hits. Oh, and both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice in the warm days. And you don't break the bank to eat here. All I'll ask, a really good local restaurant.
