I loved that this place makes fresh tortillas and you can watch them being made! They had lots of interesting choices for breakfast and lunch tacos and bowls. I tried the area 51 which was spicy chorizo, cheese, and eggs. It was very spicy so be aware but I loved the flavor. I also tried a shredded chicken with goat cheese taco and it was my favorite. Had a nice lunch with my friend Shannon Wirth and some of her family today at Calico Cactus. This is Week 13 of my #FreeTacosForAYear. Today's choices? I got a Fireproof and a Gravy Crockett. The Fireproof is piled high with delicious brisket, crispy potatoes, poblano pepper, and queso. The Gravy Crockett comes with bacon, green chili chorizo Gravy, and crispy potatoes. Both taste wonderful, especially topped with their medium Verde salsa (i put that on all my tacos here each week. Love it!). They also ran a special today on their chips and queso, which was bogo free, so of course, how could I resist? 13 weeks in and no sign of being tired of eating here. They are absolutely a wonderful addition to the Murray Hill neighborhood. Totally worth the 10 hours I camped outside for the free tacos, and each week I always try to bring a friend or family with me too! read more

This meant I got to have a wonderful chat with the manager Chad as he walked me through the menu and what makes CC unique. What I got: iced Bees Knees latte (honey & vanilla topped with cinnamon), Scrambled Eggs on your Face taco (eggs, bacon, potatoes, & queso) & Tumbleweed Tots (hash browns, chorizo, & Monterey jack). I loved that the flavors in the latte really came through. That is something that some places disappoint me on quite frankly, so that is a big plus for CC in my book. I cannot tolerate spicy heat unfortunately, so I went with one of the simpler taco options on the menu. Chad told me it was one of their best sellers & now I know why because it was terrific. I got two tacos on corn tortillas. One braised beef and the other chicken. I loved the beef one the best. I can tell they use quality ingredients and care about presentation. I also order a lavender latte with oat milk. That also was a really nice treat with smooth coffee and not too sweet which I prefer. I love this restaurant! It's situated on a very cute street in Murray Hill, and has a good amount of parking. I arrived at 11:30 on a Tuesday and plenty of seating options- very spacious and bright inside. It is counter service, with super friendly staff. They have breakfast tacos and options all day, and lunch options as well. I ordered the gravy Crockett breakfast taco (spicy! Not too much gravy, just right amount), texas hold em taco (perfect!) and bees knees iced coffee (really good! Not too sweet, perfectly balanced). The tacos looked small but were dense and filling - two was just right for me. Food came out fast, everything was delicious and honestly I want to go back and try everything else on the menu now, it all looked so good and was reasonably priced! We stopped by Calico Cactus for lunch this past weekend and were greeted at the door, told how to order and given some suggestions on what to eat. Your tacos, or quesadilla or pancakes are made fresh on large pans right in front of you, you can choose breakfast or lunch selections and everything slams. It was tough to decide. My wife and I split the Dip duo of queso and guacamole. Both were fantastic alone, and the combination was brilliant. The chips are fresh and tasty. Great appetizer. We also split some of their "tots". We chose Jalepeno and Monterey Jack tots. Both were great. Crispy outside, flavorful inside and the sauces for accompaniment were just perfect. I ordered two tacos, Texas Hold Em and Fireproof. All of their spicy items bite a bit, but in the best way. They're flavorful and level up the taco. All of the meat was flavorful, fresh and delicious. There is also a bar for salsas and toppings. Really good mild, mid and spicy. Amazing new place for breakfast lunch or brunch. I'm sure this will be a staple in Murray Hill for a long time to come. I highly recommend you give them a try. read more

Not a fan of these tacos. The Gravy Crockett had a gummy, unpleasant sauce. The Fireproof also had a gummy sauce, and the meat was dred out. It wasn't just the tacos: the guac was also gummy, had started to oxidize and become brown, and had old, slimy tomatoes. The passion fruit juice also tastes really watered down. They do make their own tortillas and chips, and they tortillas are really good. I respect that - not because it's hard but because not enough places do this. But a good tortilla can't fix bad fillings. Lots of service issues too. Tables are not kept clean, despite a large staff that does not appear overwhelmed. Trash bins overflowing, watched the staff try to stuff the trash down instead of empty it out. They didn't have menus in the front of the line and when I walked to the counter to ask for one (as there is no menu board) they asked me to refill their menus for other customers. read more

I've been here quite a few times and kept forgetting to take pics because I would scarf the deliciousness down so quickly. Point is, the food is that good. After living on the west coast, I became use to fresh flour tortillas. So hearing Murray Hill was getting a breakfast taco spot that made tortillas in house got me. My current faves are the Texas Holdem, Prairie Dog and the Tumble Weed Tots. Tacos are a good portion, affordable, made to order and tasty. Also, who doesn't like a salsa bar? This new calico cactus location on Murray Hill was a need! I have now been to both locations, I may have to say the Murray hill location takes the St Augustine as far as aesthetics and vibe. The build out of this location is gorgeous, especially if you are familiar with what it once was. Two of my favorite things under one roof sounds like a good plan to me. I love tacos, especially when the tortillas are being warmed up right in front of me. I ordered a Texas Hold'em, which was brisket with eggs and Monterey Jack cheese on a fresh flour tortilla. It was a good size and very filling. I enjoyed that I could choose and add my own fresh taco sauce on top. The menu states you can swap a flour tortilla for a corn tortilla, so there's that option for next time. They serve many drink options.. I already had mine, so I passed, but I did find out their coffee is locally roasted in Saint Augustine at The Streaming Peacock. They also state that they do some in-house roasting, as evidenced by the big Bellwether roasting machine as you enter. I didn't smell anything that smelled like coffee inside, which would have been enjoyable and left me craving a cup of hot coffee or a latte. The concept is different and very Murray Hills-ish. The menu itself will be bringing me back to try many of these various, out-of-the-ordinary items and to check out their "taco drop," which is a new taco of the week option. I'm glad I stopped in this morning to give this place a try. Walked in and was greeted right away, which I appreciated. The last time I was in that space it was a Maple Street and the flow of the restaurant has changed, so it helped to have someone redirect me. The staff is very friendly. The atmosphere is very open and bright. Pancake tacos caught my eye, so I got that and an Area 51. The pancake taco was simple and yummy, and the Area 51 was good too, but the chorizo is quite spicy. If you are sensitive to spice I would give this one a second thought, but the flavor is good. My latte was great, and they offer milk alternatives, oat milk and almond milk, which I appreciated since I am lactose intolerant. It was a good experience. I will be back! read more

These are tex mex tacos and I loved my Bee's knees latte. Interesting tacos but very good. The service was a little rocky but that's because this is still a brand new place. The people were amazing. The ambiance is nice; however, the seats are so hard that it's not a place you want to stay and talk, or read a book chapter. Gosh what a gem to come to Murray hill! I will admit I rolled my eyes when I heard tacos... boy was I wrong! These breakfast tacos are next level! And the tater tots are great! I would recommend getting the 4 count for 2 people because they are large. They were so food! The salsa options... YUM! We loved the spicy one and I already forgot the name! The plain Jane burrito was huge, VERY worth the money! The eggs were so fluffy and light. I put the hot salsa on it which really topped it off for me. The Area 51 tacos were also delish! The bees knees latte was very sweet but still delish! I would just do half sweet next time- to no fault of calico's! It did state that there were 2 syrups. We were greeted immediately as we entered and walked through the menu by staff. We decided to try a number of food items but only waters for drinks this visit. Order at the counter and get a number to bring to your table. Lots of seating options too.We started with the chips and duo dip. The chips were fresh and there was a good amount in the bag. The queso/guac combo was surprisingly delicious. I tasted a bit of both separately and they were each great on their own. We also tried both types of tots, they split our 10 piece order into equal of both. I loved the cream cheese jalapeño tots with the pepper jelly. I am not a big fan of chorizo but my husband enjoyed those tots. For my tacos, I enjoyed a breakfast taco, Miranda Special and a lunch taco, Squawk on the Street. I wasn't sure about the Miranda taco at first but ended up really enjoying it. I loved the Squawk on their Street with the added green salsa from the salsa bar. A great new addition to Murray Hill! I tried all five of the brekkie tacos and liked the Area 51 with chorizo the best. I think my favorite would be the Gravy Crockett if it had eggs in it--next time I will see if I can add eggs. Today I stopped in for breakfast tacos and a cappuccino. Everyone was super welcoming, and it was great to see some familiar faces from the Murray Hill Maple Street location. The tacos were really good--one had chorizo with a little spice, and the other was bacon and potato with crispy potatoes and a few other things I can't quite remember. I used their homemade sauces on both, and everything tasted fresh and delicious. You could also tell the tortillas were made in-house. Everyone was friendly, and it was great talking with Scott, the owner, and hearing how much thought he's put into every aspect of the restaurant. They did a great job cleaning up the old Maple Street space, adding more character, and brightening it up. They also added a takeout window, which I didn't use this time but thought was a really nice touch. The service was amazing-- the employees actually seem happy to work here! A unicorn here in Jax. We got the Bees Knees coffee and it was so good! I checked them out on Saturday for their soft opening. I had the Texas Hold 'Em breakfast burrito, which features smoked brisket, eggs and other delicious flavors on homemade tortillas. This burrito was so good. Nothing like homemade tortillas! I also had the maple tap coffee, which was very tasty, very good. This is, without question, the best breakfast in the Murray Hill area. Coffee was very good even though we had our food 10 minutes before the coffee. It wasn't that big a problem because the food was cold. Pancake taco with under cooked bacon and a cold pancake. Breakfast taco with eggs so cold the cheese wasn't melted. Brisket taco wrapped in foil so it was a cold gummy glob. The manager did bring us a complementary queso that was hot and very good. The manager did replace two of our tacos, but we waited until we got home to throw them away. I think the kitchen was a mess from the time we arrived.
