Lousy service. 1 hour to get my dinner. I was the first to order and last served with cold food. Food below average.

Camps is pretty much the best restaurant in Angels Camp. I've been there numerous times when I'm up in AC for work. I usually go for lunch and get sat right away. The wait staff is very personable and even recognizes me when I come in which is nice. The food is pretty good. I've had salads, pizza, sandwiches. The best thing I've had there was the Philly. Awesome sandwich! Flavors were great and the fries are fantastic as well. I'll be back. read more

Went with my husband last night to Camps. It was a beautiful, stormy evening so, we dined outside on their gorgeous deck. They recently added a wood pizza oven and I decided to try a pizza. It was cooked to perfection. I did not love all the flavors, but the meat was delicious and I did enjoy it. I would just change up my order next time. The staff was great and we love Matt (who's been serving their a long time)! The last time I had gone with my friends (about one month prior) the portions were really small and disappointing. I hope they change that especially since we frequently eat at Camps and the food has gotten much tastier. read more

The wine list consist of both local treasures as well as the usual suspects from other well known regions. Over priced, decent food. But they do add a little extra, which to be honest doesn't make up for the cost. Staff was friendly. Angel's camp doesn't seem to have a whole lot to offer, but this spot was a hidden gem. Beautiful location tucked away. Wouldn't mind coming back to play golf. read more

This place seems nice though the food is not very good though I think the food is probably better than many other restaurants in AC. Our waitress needed help though she had to bring about 8 cups of coffee that appeared to look as as weak as green tea to one person at our table. We shared an entree (or attempted to share). We asked for a split plate but didn't get our entree shared. They split the beet salad. For an appetizer we had the tempura asparagus and it was limp and greasy. The aioli was yuck. The skirt steak was well-seasoned though the potatoes were partially cooked. Looked like most people were ordering hamburgers. Big tall ones along with sliders, small greasy ones. Sep 2 was to be a special 85th birthday dinner for my mom. Instead it was a disaster. We arrived to see another family at the inside corner table she had reserved weeks ahead. The coconut prawns and calamari were over cooked. (Previously reliable and delicious menu items) My surf and turf steak was rancid. (My brother said his was fine.) The sole my other brother and mother ordered was not fresh. The mashed potatoes arrived to the table late. They were room temperature, mealy and tasted as if made from rotten and moldy spuds. How can you screw up potatoes??? And then the FLIES!!! They were all over constantly. We were indoors but might as well have been in a barn. I did not want to cause a scene for mom's party so I did not speak up while at the restaurant. But the next day, after comparing notes with my siblings, we swore to never return to Camps. And we also cancelled our Thanksgiving reservations there for a party of 20 booked back in April. So, do not waste your time and money at this place. We have warned all our local friends about this horrible dining experience. read more

I have eaten at Camps twice in the last two weeks, and I am sad to report I no longer would recommend it to visitors. Both times the dining room seemed to be under attack by the flies. The first time there was even a waitress going around with a fly swatter killing the little buggers where they were hit. Ew. Now I understand this place has patio seating, and therefore the doors open and close quite a bit (though as far as I know, they don't stand open for any length of time) but really, even fast-food chains have those inoffensive blue light dealies that could be tucked around discreetly to draw the flies away from diners. It's really hard to eat when flies are landing on your straw, your fork, your son's pasta, your granma's hair. EW. On the food front, I feel like things have gone downhill. the only consistently good meal lately has been the fish-n-chips. Last night the hamburger was half burned, the tempura asparagus was over cooked and heavy (tempura? really?!? I kind of doubt it). The used to have an amazing skirt-steak salad, which has been replaced by their firecracker steak salad. The new version is lettuce, steak, and asparagus spears drenched in some sort of heavy, sticky dressing. Drenched. There is a decent kids' menu, but it's hit or miss whether the waitress will bring your toddler's drink out in a plastic cup with a lid, or a heavy glass without a straw. Seriously. Plus his plate is always HOT. For the love of god, WHY would you do that? I am sure there's a reason, but I am also sure I've eaten at places that finds a way to serve cooked food to kids without their burning their tongues and fingers for the first twenty minutes. Service seems to have slumped, too. It took two waitresses standing around our table, and then still our ASKING for refills on anything besides water. If you're just drinking water they have you covered. Otherwise be prepared to remind. Notes from family members: the carpet was icky-looking, stained? dipping sauces were rather tasty. We met friends at Camps for lunch and the food was terrible. We all had salads (usually a safe bet), but the prawns were old, overcooked and hard. The lettuce on 3 of the salads were way overdressed, 1 had no dressing at all and the way the huge pieces of cucumber, onion and egg were separated on the plate look unappealing. For a Chef to let dishes out of their kitchen looking like these mismatched entrees was sad. The staff was friendly and welcoming, but the waitress couldn't comprehend when one of us wanted "grilled chicken" instead of "fried chicken" on the salad, so he just gave in and ordered a salad with prawns like the rest of us. Off the beaten path, but delicious! After frustratedly being unable to find the restaurant we were looking for in old town Angels Camp, I remembered seeing this place in our motel's visitors guide and looked up directions on my phone. As we drove down the long, dark expanse that Angel Oak Dr. and then McCauley Ranch Rd. we were beginning to think Google Maps didn't know where we were going again. But then we found it. For a Saturday night it was active, but by no means crowded. We were seated right away. We'd decided against a different restaurant that boasted live music on Saturdays because I had a headache, so at first I was leary of seeing the live keyboard and sax players, but we were sat in a back corner of the restaurant far enough away from the speakers that it was still clearly audible but their jazz stylin' was pleasurable as my headache subsided (thank you Excedrin Migraine!) Anyway, the outlook was dicey at first... we didn't see a waitress for 10-15 minutes, and when she did come over she went to a table that had been seated after us before us. Once she came over and we aired that we were a bit miffed at that, she apologized and the evening was delightful from there out. We ordered the tempura battered asparagus appetizer, the hubs ordered prime rib, and I ordered fettuccine Alfredo. Delicious! We were pretty certain that the batter on the asparagus was not a true tempura batter at all and more of maybe a beer batter, but it was still good. The hubs liked the chili sauce they were served with and I was happy with the lemon aioli. The hubs reported that his prime rib was perfect, and my pasta was perfect as well. I loved the bits of asparagus in the pasta and that the chicken in it was seasoned simply and didn't overpower the light sauce and didn't seem like an afterthought. The little bread they brought to the table was cheesy and lightly garlicky, which I appreciate not being slapped in the face with garlic, and our desserts were good, but a little different. The bread pudding seemed to be closer to a cinnamon french toast - good in it's own right, to be sure, but not exactly what the hubs was expecting. My vanilla creme brulee had a somewhat odd texture - almost more whipped than custard. If I had to hazard a guess I think it might have been made just with egg whites and not the yolks too, but the flavor was good. The bruleed sugar on top was a bit thick and a bit dark, but not burned. The quality of the food was great, we'd go again when in this area, and it definitely made up for the lackluster lunch we had! read more

After a twilight round of golf my husband and I stopped in for a cocktail. Needless to say..we fell in love and stayed for dinner. Simple and elegant atmosphere. Gorgeous sunset views overlooking ponds and the oak tree studded golf course. Nice bar, live music, great patio seating. Strong local wine and microbrew list. They even have a tasting room downstairs where you can taste over 13 local wines. I had the grilled Salmon with a lovely buerre blanc, topped with capers, tomatoes and olives, served with mashed potatoes. Excellent! Javier had the Sea Scallops with a leek risotto that was heavenly. Local Frog's Leap Fume Blanc was the perfect pairing. Just a lovely evening and we can't wait to return. read more

Today my husband and son went into Camps with some friends that they were golfing with, and were presented with a new menu. They ordered fish and chips and for the price of 15 dollars, were surprised by the tiny fish chips. Sadly we have been not so pleased by this restaurant. read more

The ribeye was fair, but in all fairness I may have caused my own problem - I don't like Brussels sprouts and in asking for subs that probably ruined the chef's vision. However, there was a limited entree selection, so that's where I went... The salmon was excellent and the melon salad outstanding, but we just had to back off on the total rating because of the slow service. Very tough to get the server's attention for what we needed, mistakes on the bill, etc. Having worked in restaurants before I know this isn't necessarily the server's fault - understaffed maybe? This spot is absolutely the worst spot not only the service but also the food. The waitress was very rude seemed like she hated her job and was taking it out on the customers. Food was not cooked , very raw. My daughter asked for a sprite because the first one they gave her was flat not once but TWICE they served her flat soda TWICE!! The calamari was not cooked right. This restaurant was recommended to us and we were hoping to get a bite to eat at 4:30 before a concert. Ignored for 15 minutes though there were only a handful of guests. On top of that, the appetizers were a disappointment. Coconut shrimp was good but for $13, you think they could do better than cold sweet chili sauce out of a jar. Maybe put some chives, cilantro or some fish sauce to add interest. I could talk about the other dishes we had but that's enough. Dinner might be really good, I don't know. read more

2 years later and camps is still everything we expected. Chef Rebecca Wilson is an ace on the steaks, the coconut shrimp and skirt steak risotto appetizers were delicious. Usually this place is good for lunch. Went for dinner for the first time for my bday. It took one hour to even get the calamari out when there was only a few other tables , not very busy at all. The calamari was mostly friend jalapeños and the calamari was fried to a crisp almost un edible and way over priced for a very small amount. The music was really loud couldn't hear anyone at my own table. The kids dinners came out before ours so then once our food came out they were bored waiting for is to finish. Not to mention my niece's chicken tenders were black and burnt but she ate them anyway. When our food finally did come over a hour later. Dads filet mignon was way over cooked - asparagus was cooked maybe 2 mins so undercooked. My boyfriends steak was supposed to be medium and it was rare. Same under cooked asparagus with his. My ravioli was ok but was not really what it sounded like on the menu. A little salty. When we were leaving I asked for a creme brûlée to go but they boxed up a cheese cake , i was so ready to leave i just kept the cheese cake. This place needs some help !!! We ate at Camps this past weekend as we do every time that we are in Angels Camp but this time was different...the food was amazing. We always loved the ambiance at Camps for the first time the quality of the food matched the great setting of the lovely clubhouse. The new chef Albert J Hernandez, "the untamed chef" has really made a mark with his fresh and creative approach to fine dining. In a day and a half we ate three meals there all were equally as impressive. We loved unique touches that were as visually appealing as they were tasty. If you have not gone to Camps in awhile - you should check them out again. read more

My hubby works here and the place inside is lovely, the outside area is nice as well, I haven't personally eaten there since it is pricey but when he brings me home food it's honestly the absolute best. We decided to try the restaurant, ignore the bad reviews and give it a try. The clubhouse was clean and had a nice decor. The staff was pleasant but completely overwhelmed due to the number of guests. I was surprised that they weren't staffed due to Columbus day weekend. The entrees were sad.The duck was burned on one side and undercooked on the other. The sauce was also burned and had thickened to a jelly consistency. The beef stroganoff had no beef. Only rice and gravy. The Manger did make adjustments but never came by to apologize. Wendy the server did try her best and we left the appropriate tip. read more

I love love love their burger. If you want a quality burger, well prepared and plentiful then this is your place. I'm sure the rest of the menu was delicious. Also, the view of this prestige golf course is amazing. By far one of the best places I've been to in a long time and I'm not just saying that. Morgan our waitress was so sweet and kind, so very curteous and always checking to make sure everything was up to par. On another note, Sherry the owner was so polite to come over and check also the quality of the food. We had a great dinner here. The only reason I am not giving it five stars is because we had to eat down in the wine bar. It was actually fine, but I was a little annoyed that they seemed booked even though we had tried to call for two days to make reservations and no one answered the phone. We were staying at Wyndham right next door and they should have let us know that we needed a reservation to eat there. But the hostess more than made up for not being able to get a table for dinner that night. She basically let us sit down in the wine bar and she was our server, which actually ended up working out better with our two kids. We ordered the coconut crusted prawns, the steak and lobster and the lava cake-it was all very delicious. Our kids loved their pasta and the small sundaes they offer were perfect for them. Looking forward to going back on our next visit. The atmosphere is really pretty as well. So if you go, make a reservation and you will love it! read more

Love the ambiance of Camps but the food need improvement. I've eaten here a lot, but last two times were terrible. One time my chicken was so burned I had to return it, which they did happily, but it should never have been served that charred. This past weekend they completely forgot my order, yet served everyone else, and when my meal arrived my chicken was swimming in a gloppy, heavy lemon flavored gravy - yuck. (Note to chef: lemon = light, potatoes best served with savory gravy not lemon... Maybe rice instead?) Had to wade through the thick gravy to get to chicken - veggies were drowned. Really unpleasant meal. Overall, Camps' portions are great, service is good (they comp'ed my last meal - which was kind) and it's a lovely place, but please Camps, make us want to come back for the food! read more

If you buy a bottle, your tasting is free, and they waive the corkage fee if you want to drink it upstairs with your dinner. Joelle, our server, was exceptional. Truffle risotto hush puppies resting on a pecorino cream sauce with some clover sprouts as an appetizer set the bar high. The shoyu ginger skirt steak was delicious and tender. The seared ahi presentation was gorgeous and magnificent as well. It's a wonderful place to watch the sunset and enjoy exceptional cuisine. read more
