I was very pleased to discover this gem. We stumbled upon this place while biking around Steveston Village. We've visited most of the restaurants before and wanted to try something new and this place was always closed when we've biked at night. We will have to go biking more during the day. Where do I begin? Oh yes, chicken and waffles! Simply divine! The poutine was also very good. The drinks were so reasonably priced so I thought, they wouldn't be very good, but I was proven wrong! The Moncton Sour is not to be missed. The cosmopolitan was also a good choice. Sadly, I couldn't have more because I had to bike more than 15km home and it was 3 in the afternoon! But i will sure try other drinks on my next visit. What completed my wonderful dining experience was the service. The owners and rest of the staff were all so friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. We never wanted for anything. It is such a joy to discover new places to dine. Found this cute little spot in Steveston amongst other bigger restaurant and I must say, it's now one of my favourite places to visit for brunch. Newly renovated and moderately priced, this place is a great location for a Saturday or Sunday morning brunch for friends and family. You can also make a reservation which is not typical for most brunch places around the Lower Mainland! The food was wonderfully plated (honestly didn't expect that from a $14 breakfast) and service was absolutely fantastic. The beef stew was hearty and flavourful and went wonderfully with the sour dough bread. The French toast ensemble was very balanced in both flavour profile and texture. This location is where the outside of Granny's Diner is filmed from the ABC series Once Upon a Time. This fact is one of the reasons I made the trip to Steveston to have lunch here. Be warned: the inside is completely different from the show so don't be disappointed when you arrive. The food was basic Diner food and was alright. Nothing memorable that would make me come back again, but it was a good value. They have an "American Express cards accepted here" sign in the window but they won't actually take them. They do have free wifi! read more

Food was good when it finally arrived. We waited 1 hour for our orders, watching as others coming after us were served. The prime 'old town' location and obvious untapped potential is the saving grace of this bright little cafe in the heart of the Steveston Village. For 16 years this owner and family operated business has been serving basic, old-school type dishes, including hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries and cafeteria style sammies made up to order. Breakfasts are also served. Priced just right but somehow missing the mark for quality or any outstanding feature, sadly I can't see any draw for a return customer. With plenty of tourists to keep them in business, this may not be an economic issue but it's just a shame. It could be so much more. Hardwood flooring and wooden beams, fresh paint on the walls, photographs of historic Steveston give the place some ambiance, but the plastic deck chairs cheapen the effect. Absolutely fabulous brunch! A must try is the special eggs, steak, back bacon, lobster, harsh browns, toast and granola yogurt taster! This time I had the waffle, chicken with fresh greens. The Chef CiCi has a real talent for bringing out amazing flavors in everything. This Sunday in February, the cafe was totally packed, even the outside patio was mostly full. Ever since the new owner added her decor touches, almost a year ago, combined with CiCi's new menu, the place has gained a reputation and following from all over metro Vancouver. Did you know that Steveston Cannery Cafe was filmed as "Granny's Diner" in the fictional Storybrooke town in the TV series "Once Upon A Time?" You're eating at a famous film set site. :) Steveston Cannery Cafe in Steveston Village has re-opened in early 2016 under new ownership. It originally closed in the Winter of 2015 and residents were really sad to have lost such a gem in the historic town. But good news, the Cannery Cafe is up and running. The interior still looks the same, and the food is still cafeteria diner style: Omelettes, breakfast/brunch type of food, burgers, sandwiches etc. The customer service is very good, we had a Chinese little old lady serve us and she was busy running around serving patrons. At first, it was really quiet when we came here to eat for lunch at 1:00pm, but then at 1:30pm, a huge rush of patrons came in. We noticed that every single patron here was a Caucasian senior at age 55+, lol. My friend and I were the only young people here, and we were the only Asians in the entire cafe (aside from the Chinese waitress). The food is basic, don't expect anything fancy. I would say it's comparable to stuff like Denny's, iHop, and other diner joints. The price point is okay, maybe slightly pricey for some of the items (eg $11 or $12 for omelettes) but then there are some cheap fare items too like $5 - $7 sandwiches, pancakes and burgers.. But it was busy and the people seemed like Steveston Village locals who have been here for a long time and were loyal patrons to The Cannery Cafe before it switched ownership. The crowd was mostly grandmas in groups of two to fours at 55 - 70 years old during the 1:30pm weekday lunch. I liked that because it was quiet and peaceful! I would give the food 2.5 stars since I like fancier food, and 4 stars for ambiance and customer service so I'll average that out to 3 stars. The food was kind of basic diner style but what I liked was the service, the view, and the environment of the cute country house. I come here mostly for the ambiance of that quaint cottage feel. I noticed a reviewer named Mandy C, who wrote 4 days before me, mentioned that her hot chocolate came with whipped cream and cinnamon. That was probably from the old ownership, because she was talking about October 2015 even though she wrote her review in June 2016. I was a little disappointed that mine was just powdered hot chocolate with no cream or cinnamon toppings and was kind of hoping to get hot chocolate like hers. I decided to go here because I'm a huge fan of once upon a time and was excited to see where they filmed at Granny's. (Hint: they film the inside scenes elsewhere.) I went for brunch and it was pretty good but the service was very, very slow despite me being one of the only people there. I waited 20 minutes after I finished eating for the check. Nice location, interesting building. Greeted quickly upon entering; however, that was about the quickest portion of the service. Wait staff slow to come to table, had to flag them down after ten minutes to order tea and food (no, they were not overly busy; about six tables of patrons at the time). Ordered the Farmer's Breakfast and attempted to order the french toast meal (Sweet and Salty). We pointed out the french toast meal on the menu, the waiter repeated the name of it and we acknowledged wanting the french toast. Tea came with bag in the cup; no spoon to remove the bag or a sauce / plate to put the bag on. Were not asked about milk or other items; again had to ask. No water given; though other tables got water. Food came fairly quickly. The french toast 'meal' was one piece of cinnamon toast with hardly any egg and nothing else that was listed on the menu; the waiter had entered in the side french toast and not the meal. No attempt to make amends; we had to order bacon separately. The Farmer Breakfast was fairly well prepared but way overly salty and spiced that was not needed. Pleasant staff. The cute courtyard of this cafe drew us in. Was a bit hesitant due to the mediocre rating and skeptic about how good their Italian and Spanish dishes were. We ordered the Saffron Seafood Paella (plate version,'not the full pan) and squid inked pasta and were pleasantly surprised. They may not have been authentic but I still found them tasty. Nice outside seating. Expensive considering location and menu items. Took over 45 minutes for our meal. Our meals came out 10 minutes apart.

I asked the staff if they were able to acomodate some who was celiac. One staff member asked me "if I would die" if I were to eat gluten, in a totally condescending manner. I was diagnosed celiac by a gastroenterologist. If I ingest gluten I become very sick, and it causes damage to my intestines. If you are not able to prepare a gluten free meal, I totally understand. What I can't understand is your staff members patronizing, rude comment. I have a medical condition, and I politely asked if you could accommodate it. I should be able to ask that question without receiving poor treatment. read more

Today i was walking around Steveston playing Ingress and decided I need a spot of lunch while i charged my phone on the portable power supply I have. I decided in the heat to stop somewhere that did nice tasty sandwiches and I'd heard the Cannery Cafe was good. It's bigger on the inside than you'd expect from looking at it, so when you go in the size is surprising. There's lots of tables, and a nice simple menu above the counter where they make your food. I ordered the smoked salmon bagel, but on sourdough because bagels don't really agree with the disk that flips a little in my jaw when I eat them. The sandwich had salmon, cream cheese, LOTS of capers (i mentioned how much i like them and she just loaded it up with them for me), sprouts, fresh lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and onion. You don't notice the onion much which is good, and the ingredients were all very fresh. I paired it with a nice pear cider, although if i hadn't noticed those I would have had one of the Boylans sodas next to them. Their patio was perfect - there was a choice between under a shady umbrella or in the sun, so i went with reading my book in the sun. You don't notice the street noise very much even though it was right on Moncton on a busy Saturday afternoon. The sandwich was just the right amount to be comfortably filling and the cider was crisply delicious on such a hot sunny day. I will definitely enjoy a sandwich there again in the future. read more

Came here with my husband and two teenagers on mothers day about 2pm - so not to busy. Where do I begin....... the service was bare minimum. My spicy prawn appetiser dish delivered in a pool of oil with no plates and no baguette that was supposed to come with. Eventually two thin slices of baguette were delivered to the table after we asked twice. The "angus beef" burgers ordered by my son and husband came with a slice of processed Kraft or generic cheese. My son said it tasted like a burger from a school fun fair. No one came by to ask how the meals were and the server disappeared replaced by two young girls clearing tables. Went again to try after a year or so. It was a long weekend and busy but there was no service. Pretty disappointed. Poorly run with no management. Got my food but no cutlery, no water. No follow up asking how the food was. Was not acknowledged when we arrived. Multiple staff walked past us and just ignored us. Prob waited good 10 minutes for someone to finally say something. Saw a lot of people on the patio get up and leave cause no one took their orders or come by their table. They told people to put their name down on the list but they never called them and just seated people waiting at the door. Asked for hot sauce and it never came. You have to find someone and wave them down to get some service. Sat and waited 20 minutes for the bill. We eventually just got up and walked up to the register to pay. The food was alright but not the worth the price. The portions was kinda small. Don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

Went for Mothers Day becaue I had a vet appointment after. The staff are super unfriendly, do not say hi, told me my 8lb dog couldn't sit in my lap and had to be on floor while another Asian guy was allowed to have his dog on hi lap the whole meal. It was extremely hot day, didn't bring water and it was warm. It took forever to order and when I asked the waitress what is the avocado salad, she reples, just avocado, to which I say then why does it say "salad"? No answer. They brought my food out first..Crosti and it was in a cast iron skillet, it was a small portion with 4 white blogs, which laer turned out to be poached eggs and cream cheese (wheich tasted like sour cream). !0 mns later they bought out the other 2 orders to the wrong table. At the end no-one came so we could pay, had to get up and go insice aftre waiting 15 mins. Food was very dissapointing, unfreindly staff, not pet freindly. My husband and I drove up from a weekend wedding in Seattle, and I'm glad we arrived on a Sunday, because they had a sign in the window indicating closure M-F in January (I guess not enough foot traffic because it's been so cold up there lately)? Anyhow, I ordered a basic grilled cheese with fries because like other reviewers, I'm a Once Upon A Time fan. It was pretty standard, nothing special. I was mostly disappointed with the interior - I knew the setup wouldn't be exactly the same as in the show, just from the small size of the building, but couldn't they get that pine tree forest wallpaper? There was absolutely nothing from the show on the inside (not a single sign, picture, etc) which I thought was strange...so many tourists come to see Granny's Diner that you'd think they would try a little harder. It was still really cool to sit facing the street and imagine all my favorite characters walking by. That being said, we rented the apartment above the restaurant for the night on Airbnb and it was GORGEOUS! As we hanging out Steveston village, we ran into this small restaurant. We choose this place because we were sold by their lobster dish photo in YELP! Yet, We didn't order anything lobster. We shared two apps and a main dish. Both appys , duck breast salad and spicy prawn. are good. However, very disappointing about the Seafood Paella. The seasoned rice is good, but all the seafoods were just boiled and put on top of the rice. You know boiling water will wash away all the taste and freshness of the seafood. That's how it was served. I will give 4 stars for the appys and two stars for the Paella. So it makes a three review. Will come back again and try their lobster dish. read more

Fantastic spot for fresh and healthy food. We had tasty sandwiches made on the spot--choice of bread, at least a dozen different fillings (tuna salad, turkey, black forest ham, chicken salad, etc.), and then fresh veggies and dill pickles on the side. I chose the Avocado & Cream Cheese sandwich and BF had the Black Forest Ham with mayo. They were about $7.50 each, some a bit more (shrimp), some a bit less (vegetarian). I've also been for breakfast and they had some really great options. I got a veggie omelette with cheese and it was filled with full slices of tomato, mushroom, avocado, and fresh onion rings (not chopped up into tiny indecipherable pieces). So with each bite I actually tasted which vegetables were there. My friends were all satisfied by their breakfasts--English Muffin egg sandwich and the 2-egg with bacon or sausage breakfast. Worst service I've ever gotten. Immediately ignored, there was no one to show us to our table. A waitress came up and asked if we were ready to order, but we haven't even been given our menus yet. No one came to ask for out order after that, so we had to go up to the counter to order. I ordered a burger and fries with a mochaccino, and my friend ordered a burger and mochaccino. My friend got her drink maybe 5 minutes after ordering. We waited for 30 minutes before getting up and telling them to cancel our order because the food didn't come. Only then, they said the food was ready. My drink never came and I asked to take it off the bill. The girl at the counter apologized but that's all she did. Only apologized and went back to doing the same thing. She also didn't give me back my change. It was not busy, it wasn't even half full. But apparently a staff of 4 or 5 people couldn't tend to the people in the restaurant. There were also many more customers going up to the counter to order rather than having them taken while in their seats. read more

Their hamburger was definitely not fresh. It was a frozen patty. The only reason why we ate here was because my daughter said the show Once Upon a Time is filmed here. Traveled here because of Once Upon a Time and I was very excited. The inside looked very different than imagined but non the less the experience was very good. The waitress was very personal and kind. She took the extra mile to make you feel comfortable which was nice. I ordered the waffle and my partner ordered the steak and shrimp. Both were very tasty. My waffle was the perfect combo of fluffy and crispy. The syrup was also tasty. My partner really enjoyed his steak but the shrimp could have used a little more seasoning. 1st time here. Late breakfast. So yes they do serve breakfast all day that I can agrees with, but is it worth the time to have breakfast here is the question. First off the menu can be pretty confusing with options. I ordered the waffles w/ sausage and added hashbrowns for $1. Let's start with the waffle. No crispy texture outside was very soft and flat. Inside was soft like still uncooked soft. The sausage was straight from the grocery store I believe Costco. The waffle were from there as well. It comes in the form of a patty. You know where you can buy a pack of 20 for $3.99. Yes the food came out presented very boutique-est but if I can picture which isle to get it down then I believe that's a bad sign. The prices are pretty cheap compared to standard breakfast nooks but the quality definitely comes a long for the roller coaster ride as well. Price vs. Portion I would have to say. Price cheap portion standard grocery mart servings. They need to change there standards to survive in this market. The location is great and who cares if they've been on television. My boyfriend and I are "Once Upon A Time" fans and happened to realize that the show is filmed near Vancouver so we decided to drop by before driving back down to Seattle. For one to comment on service, it has to be first rendered to the guest. Greeted and sat, quickly asked what we would like. Took a bit for the food to arrive. Requested additional syrup. Took 10 minutes and two people to get the syrup. Only delivered a teaspoon size serving. Isn't the state symbol on the flag a maple leaf?? Steveston itself is so charming! This cafe adds to the charm starting with the fact that it looks so old-timey and adorable. I am also a fan of the show once upon a time which makes me like the place more. I will definently be back to eat here when I visit Stevenson, however the reason I rated it 3 stars was because of the extremely slow service. The server was very nice! However, very very slow. I also saw him drop a fork and then continue to drag it back with his shoe on the floor instead of picking it up (which isn't foodsafe i figure). The food is pretty good!
