a 4 star place, but only just. it's very tough for me to say this, considering i live off their coffee every single day, however they do have their flaws. No, its not that the coffee stinks, in fact its great! Can't beat a large iced coffee for 2.20 with a flavor shot. It's not the best, but its very solid coffee. The iced especially, because they used slushed ice and very large sugar crystals that you pretty much crunch when you get a good sip (note the irish cream flavor for their coffee literally is an espresso shot of its own...try it!). So if not the coffee, its the rude service? Nope. These guys are great; a bunch of old Italian guys cooking food and serving coffee. its awesome; it reminds me of my mom's side of the family, as they really are a prime example of old Italian dudes. Finally, its the food right? Right?? Well...yeah sort of. The food itself is fine; in fact i dare say its very good, no matter what you get. my main issue is the prices for food. The coffee is incredibly cheap, but the food seems too high for me. C'mon man, 6 bucks + change for a steak and cheese sandwich?? They're not exactly the largest sandwiches either. I don't know, maybe uptown cafe has spoiled me for quality sandwiches at fair prices; hell their 6 dollar sandwiches are easily 14 inches. All that aside, its a solid dining establishment filled with Massachusetts Government employees, and probably the best coffee shop in the city as far as quality and price is concerned (seriously for their prices, i don't think the world's best coffee for 4 bucks will even top it!) read more

Decent food for the money. Very casual and comfortable. It's picnic style with paper plates and utensils. We all had breakfast. Eggs were a bit more runny than I usually like but it was still good. This is a bad breakfast experience. Service is unorganized and slow though nice enough. They serve everything on and in paper plates/cups which makes the experience feel low rent. The food is okay at best but the small kitchen only allows for one flattop so the eggs and pancakes taste like bacon. Capitol Coffee House is a no-frills not-quite-coffee-house, more-diner-style eatery safely hidden on Bowdoin street. I've been working in the area for a year and there are days where for lunch, I want something I'd normally have to get closer to home - a good steak and cheese sub, maybe some wings (rather than the several varieties of salads/quinoa bowls that the downtown area is infested with) - and Capitol Coffee is PERFECT for that and more. The cheeseburgers are great, wings are great, fries are great, subs are great - ironically, I've yet to try their coffee, but considering the rest of the menu, not to mention the name, surely that is also great. Service is fast and the staff is friendly - there are definitely regulars that come in and its fun to listen to the banter between long-time customers and cooks/servers. Overall, between the food and the experience, I highly recommend Capital Coffee House. read more

I don't know what the people who liked the ice coffee are talking about. I ordered iced coffee and I got a cup filled to the rim with crushed ice. If there was any room for coffee it must have been the water they rinsed the coffee pot with, it literally tasted like someone had coffee in that cup and then filed with water and that's what I got. If I had my eyes closed I couldn't tell what it was. However, I do like their food and they are very nice. I am a coffee person and I need it in the morning. That was very disappointing. read more

I have been going to Capitol coffee since 1985 when you could get a cup of coffee with sambuka in it. Today the service is excellent and the burgers, subs, fries and breakfast is hearty "old school" delicious. I would recommend that you pay with cash only and if you must use your credit card please only give it to one of the older gentlemen. read more

I work just down the street and was introduced to Capitol by a co-worker who told me, as an Italian, I can't mess around with non-Italian coffee. The staff is friendly, kind, and efficient, even in the rush of Downtown Boston mornings. The food is great, cooked fresh and to order, and the coffee is delicious and generously sized for the price. It's a no-frills establishment but the perfect place to grab a bite and a coffee on the way to work or for a mid-afternoon pick me up. Couldn't recommend this place more and as long as I'm a Bostonian, I'll keep coming back to Capitol! read more

Seems like a great place to just stop in for coffee/breakfast sandwich if you work nearby, but I don't recommend meeting work colleagues here if you are commuting in a ways. After taking the train in mid-morning to meet someone there who worked nearby, I walked in with an empty espresso cup I purchased earlier in the am at the start of my commute. I went to the counter to order. I then asked if there was a restroom. I was told no restrooms and to go across the street. Not a problem. I left and used the restroom across the street (thanks to the security guards who let me in!) and went back to wait for my colleague and order. Within a minute of walking back in and going back to my table I was yelled at by who I assume was the owner (actual yelling- a full 3 minutes in front of everyone) about the "outside cup" I still had in my hand and telling me to leave if I wanted a restroom. Tried to explain I already used the restroom across the street per his employee's earlier directions and was back as I was meeting someone. I offered him the empty espresso cup thinking that would solve the "outside cup" problem and he'd understand I meant no harm with my empty cup. He refused the cup and continued to yell. Fortunately my colleague showed up shortly after and we were able to meet without any further craziness from the owner. read more

Got a job recently in the area + after walking by a couple dozen times, but this morning I decided I'd try this place out. Very small, J shaped space filled with people and it smelled amazing. I went with a large cappuccino that was made with care + came in a non-descript paper cup (which I love) and it was under $4. Yes. They sprinkled something on top which I assumed was cinnamon but I believe it was cocoa powder- unexpected but totally welcomed! The concierge at the Omni Parker House recommended Capitol Coffee House as an option for us when we said we wanted real food, not too expensive and quick service for breakfast so we could be on our way touring the city. That is exactly what we got with the charm of a family run business to boot. We LOVED the pancakes and omelets were cooked to perfection - for eating in, you get a nice ceramic mug for your cappuccino which I appreciated. Paper plates keep the cooks focused on customers/cooking and costs down, so those were also appreciated. Want a tomato or onion added to your sandwich? Just ask - we did and they were happy to accommodate and cook to order. Mon-Fri there are not waiters/waitresses - so place your order, take a seat where you like and food is delivered to your table. I am a person who enjoys breakfast more than any other meal. The Capital has by far the best breakfast I have ever had in Boston. I am fortunate enough to work nearby so I am able to enjoy this on a regular basis. Try the scrambled eggs. Cooked in a pan rather than being thrown on an overheated grill. Everything else is top notch from pancakes to French Toast. The omelets are perfection. Not enough to say about the place. Nothing fancy. Plastic plates and cutlery. Decent, nothing great. The egg sandwich is the standout. Don't know why everyone loves the iced coffee so much. It's just alright but the crushed ice instead of cubes is a nice touch.
