I can get The Capitol Special which includes pancakes, eggs, bacon & homefries for $7! Everyone there is super nice and makes us feel like home whenever we are there. I have given this place multiple chances, and they never fail to disappoint. The staff are extremely rude and unhelpful, the food is average at best, and the prices are ridiculous for the low quality. This place gets my votes because it embodies my old fantasy of what being in a city was all about, one that's maybe couched in early '80s movies and such. Good place for a quick egg sandwich if you work in the area. The coffee is nice and strong and the espresso drinks aren't that bad. It could be kind of expensive if you are on a budget and come here every morning. It is cool to listen to the employees fight in Italian though. Please explain to me how you can serve a very limited lunch and close at 1:00 on Saturdays? I went with a friend of mine and our orders were changed no less than four times because they basically had nothing left. It was getting to the point where I nearly asked what they actually had and went from there. To boot, the pepper steak sandwich was the greasiest food I ever had and was more suited for consumption at 1:00 am while drunk than at 1:00 pm. The sandwich was soggy from grease in the less than 5 minute walk it took me to get from the restaurant to my class. In short, I can't believe I spent almost $12 on something that awful. Ok so I honestly believe that they have offer really great coffee but their lunch is eh. I came here for a quick lunch with a friend and ordered the hot veggie wrap. It was probably one of the worst tasting meals I've had. For seven dollars, you get tasteless veggies and melted cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. Blah. Alright, so I've discovered myself going here every Saturday for brunch lately, and I feel a little bad about my previous review. Everything I said still stands for the most part, but I've grown rather attached to the simple yet effective setup they've got here. I'm on a mission to try the coffee spots around my work area and when I say this place has great coffee, it's an understatement. There's a hint of a toffee or nutty flavor to it when you first take a sip and then after that, it is deliciously smooth. Not at all impressed with this place. About ten of us were gathering in a Saturday for a meeting nearby so stopped in to this empty place for breakfast beforehand. Having convened from all over New England we were disturbed to hear that the bathroom facilities are "private." We all thought that might be illegal but were too busy to look it up. Some of us refused to buy breakfast, both for practical reasons (coffee without restroom?) and principle. In addition, I have Celiac Disease and when I asked if the omelettes were made with a prepared mix that might contain gluten I was told NO GLUTEN FREE, without explanation or apparent concern. Waitress was kind but unable to overcome strong boss. Good enough deal on the food for downtown Boston but if you want to eat somewhere where you feel the proprietor gives a hoot, don't visit this place. read more

Awesome food!!! When we first walked in I was a little worried. The place is nothing fancy and does not have table service, that being said my disappointment was quickly replaced by sheer joy upon eating the food. Everything is made to order and fresh as can be. The home fries are heaven sent, we had the vegetarian omelette and blueberry pancakes which were delicious. The coffee was nice and strong. Paid $20 for two breakfast sandwiches (mediocre) and two coffees (likewise). Expected food to be overpriced across from the statehouse, so no biggie. Then asked two different employees if I could use the bathroom, and was told they didn't have one. My understanding is that state law requires an establishment with three employees (there were five at CCH) to provide restroom accommodations. Will investigate. read more

The spot is interesting and there are some characters working there, great location, but the coffee isn't good and the service is quite bad. The type of spot where you can order whatever you want for breakfast within reason and they will make it, but it will be mediocre. Disappointing. We were in town and wanted a diner type bfst. I should have run when i opened the napkin to find plastic utensils. I then should have ran when my coffee came in Styrofoam cup. Folgers would have tasted better. Bfst took an hour from start to finish. While mngt walked around and told everyone how busy they were I saw half the tables and bar area empty. I used to go here all the time in college. It's been a while but I happen to be in Boston this past weekend and my husband and I came in for breakfast Saturday morning. Same people work there now that did 10 years ago! Breakfast was tasty and still as affordable as my years in college. Had good conversation with the person at the counter, his father owns the place and he has been there since 1994. Whenever I am in the area I try to grab coffee or something quick from here, good, simple food. I had the greek omelet special for breakfast, they offer eggwhites too which i was happy about. I went here for breakfast with my son and daughter and I liked it. You order your food, pay, they give you a number and you pick it up at the counter. The food is served on paper plates which was fine for us. I had eggs, home fries and toast, my daughter had an egg sandwich and my son only had a muffin. My food was just as good as that other place with the long line. I saw someone having pancakes and they looked very good. What is better than finding the perfect breakfast spot, where you know you can count on a quick, delicious, piping hot, inexpensive meal to start your day?! I finally found it at this little hole in the wall near the State House. Counter service, mostly (a few tables are in the back, but why bother?). The opposite of fancy: paper plates, paper cups...perfectly true to its calling, no pretense. Friendly guys behind the counter. I haven't tried the other menu items, but I can tell you this was the best breakfast I've had in a long time. Too bad they're not open on Sunday; but hey, guys who work this hard deserve a day off.
