Stopped here for some breakfast on the way home on New Year's Day. This place gets a lot of action. It was absolutely packed. Still, the service was friendly and fast. The food was delicious. I went with the creamed chipped beef and a side of scrapple. It was a huge portion that I wasn't able to finish but I enjoyed it. Only negative points were the size of the tables - a booth was a squeeze for four people - and the single cash register at the front, as I waited a good 10 minutes to pay amongst a group of 20+ people. read more

DO NOT GO! Owner was very rude when we waited 15 minutes for a table, then another 10 for our waiter and 40 minutes for our food which never came. When we had to leave for an appointmet. We nicely told the owner we had to leave and he very rudely told us we were being rude to him. When I tried to explain that we were sorry but didn't have more than 40 minutes to wait for our food, he told me to just leave. I would not suggest patronizing a place who doesn't care about or treat their customers with respect. I would have considered going back, but not now. read more

WoW! What can I say. After having to be in the Harrisburg area on a regular basis now, and everyday for the past week, I was starting to get 5 guy burgered out. Thought I'd take a chance on the Capitol Diner. I have been returning for the past 5 days, and will likely do so again tomorrow. I've also been sampling multiple items on the menu. Every soup of the day has been great, and I'm not a "soup guy." But it comes with EVERY dinner, in addition to the customary 2 veggies (My kind of place.) Corn: permanent Item on Menu; VERY important to me...I love corn. Stuffing/filling: Real, not bread cubes. Excellent. Roast Beef Dinner: Sliced thin, but REAL roast beef. Yankee pot roast: Perfect, perfect, and perfect. Thick, generous portion, excellent sauce. Turkey: as good as any turkey dinner at any "fast restaurant." (Again, sliced thin, but real.) Breakfast: had their everything breakfast. Good flavor pancakes, dippy eggs cooked CORRECTLY. Fried potatoes with or without onions, I got with onions. More onions than I would like, but I'll know how to order next time. (They were REAL good, and I ate the onions anyhow.-paid for the next day. :-) Only complaint, had to order toast as an add-on. This made a comparable "Grand slam Breakfast" a little pricey, but I didn't care. I was very hungry. I will return, again, and again. Not sure where the unhappy people were eating at... Take it from a "generously proportioned guy;" THIS is the place to eat 24 Hours a day. (No, I have no relationship with them, and I'm a real person. It really is that good.) read more

We stopped at this diner on the way home. It was between breakfast and lunch so it must have been an awkward time. My husband said the breakfast are very good. I had a Reuben sandwich and it was okay although there was not much meat in it. My husband had chili (which he liked) and a tuna melt. The waitress was friendly but the manager and cashier were downright rude! Couldn't even put a smile on their faces when I am turning my money over to them! Place is clean and lots of parking. Capitol Diner is your typical "by-the-side-of-road" place to eat with it's usual good food...but, there are some "not as good foods" too. I never make Capitol Diner my first, second, or even third place choice to eat out at. My friends like the place, but I'd rather go to another restaurant that makes better soups and sandwiches. It's not that the food is bad; most times it's alright, but the restaurant just doesn't serve what I usually like to eat. At this establishment, I avoid the shrimp and the fish; but...then again, you may love it. I think there's too much breading on the food. Disclaimer: I am form Jersey and we are all raised in diners so I have high expectations. On the positive, the price was fair and nothing was bad. On the critical: nothing was good either, passable at best. I was seated fast and the sever was quick in getting my drink + The menu I was given was for the wrong day so my first entree selection was not avaialbe, nor were the two sides. One, the cucumber salad, had been out for five months the server noted! -- She did get my salad while I reconsidered my options+ I selected a beef tips in gravy over noodles, good ole comfort food. Something every diner should excel at. The portion was a little modest for my liking, but that did not detract much compared to the disparate need for seasoning. A judicious application of salt and pepper saved it from disaster. The tips themselves were severely overdone. They lacked that delicious fall apart characteristic but rather splintered once bitten. Stringy comes to mind. The Harvard beets were okay. The baby beets themselves were flavorful, and well cooked-- not overdone and with a nice tender crunch to them. BUT the sauce brought NOTHING to the party and was scrapped off. It certainly wasn't Dear Old Mom's tangy sweet recipie of my youth. If I was spending another day I Harrisburg I doubt this would be a dinner repeat. Bon appetit. read more

What's up with the flies all over the place in Harrisburg? First, they were in our rental car and next they were in the Capitol Diner. Fortunately they were not in any of our food. We came here for lunch before checking into our hotel and service was quick and attentive. I ordered the crab cake sandwich and my sis ordered the egg salad sandwich. When my sister's sandwich came out it was a fried egg sandwich. We didn't bother to tell the waitress about the wrong order and she ate it anyways. Both sandwiches end up being pretty good. With the exception of the flies and food mistake, it's a good place for a weary traveler to grab a bite to eat. read more

As far as diners go, this is a great little spot! Situated less than 10 minutes off of the PA turnpike, this is a great food stop option if you are sick of rest stops. They have all of the usual diner fare and the portions are big. They also accommodated my food allergies and served me a salad for breakfast even though they technically weren't serving lunch foods yet. Thank you for the great customer service! read more

The last time I came here, I received some painfully aweful service. But I think it was a fluke because I've loved it every other time I've been there. I've even been there drunk and been well tolerated. I like the food. I like the price. It's good stuff with ample parking :-) read more

As of today, we USED TO come here a couple times per month for breakfast. It's always busy, sometimes we would wait 10-15 minutes. The service was sometimes spotty but usually it was a fair experience. That changed today. Not only did we wait for our server to acknowledge us, once our order was placed we watched numerous tables who were seated after us receive their food before us. That alone MAY have been forgivable, but I happened to be seated with a view directly into the kitchen. I watched server after server grab handfuls of bacon and toast WITHOUT WEARING GLOVES and place the food on different plates. The servers then served those plates to the unsuspecting customers. As if that wasn't gross enough, one of the servers kept touching her eye before and after handling food with her bare hands. There were tongs there - I saw other servers use them to obtain the bacon and toast - but apparently that was too advanced a tool for some of the waitresses to use. My husband and I got up to leave - still not served with our food - and told the woman at the front why we were leaving. She really couldn't have cared less. An older waitress (ironically one I saw use the tongs) overheard what I was saying and winced as though she knew what I was talking about. Funny - if you KNOW your servers are committing a health code violation - perhaps SAY SOMETHING ABOUT IT. If you value your health, seriously, find another place for breakfast. But if you have a strong immune system roll the dice and take your chances here. For my husband and I - well, they've just lost two customers for life (or at least until management changes). This place is always packed, and as you can see from the other reviews management really doesn't care so long as people are in their establishment. read more

The omelette was burnt and very salty, as were the home-fries. There seemed to be a piece of a bag inside of my home-fries as well. The service was average on a good day and lacked any form of a personality. And our waiter messed up our checks. I will not be back for some time indeed. read more

My coworkers and I used to go here regularly. If you don't mind the waitresses sticking there thumbs in your food when they hand you your plate, only two cups of coffee and the host starring at everyone with a rotten look on his face then this is the place for you. Went to dinner with my wife, she ordered a Turkey burger I ordered a cheeseburger. The waitress asked us what kind of cheese we wanted . I said American my wife said pepper jack. The amount of time it took for food to come out I could have went home and made it myself. Slow on the drink refills but quick to give us a check to get us out. After looking at our check we realize we were charged a $1.25 for a slice of cheese. REALLY??? Where was the golden cheese imported from. When we brought this up to the cashier she said let me take care of this. After a 10 minute wait for the manager, she comes out and tells us that turkey burgers do not come with cheese. Really, the turkey burger does not come with cheese! Then why did I pay $2.69 to make it a deluxe! The OWNER was very rude, disrespectful and a complete bitch!!! read more

Stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Several of the waitstaff were observed picking their ears and wiping their mouths and noses with their bare hands in plain sight of the customers. I asked a waitress if I could speak to a manager but the woman did not speak English well and required assistance from a co-worker, who told me there was "no manager" on duty all day. So no one was in charge of the place, or able to fix problems, or responsible for what went on there. Having said that, it was a mediocre diner. read more

Horrible food. Took forever to come out and when it did it was cold and you could tell it had been sitting for a while. Server said she was waitinf for my daughters burger to be made so her meal was good. Server never tried to resolve anything. Didnt even have a manager talk to us. i don't regularly visit this restaurant but both times i ordered curbside pickup not only was the waiting time about 30 minutes past the time the website said it would be done, i had to walk into the restaurant myself and it still wasn't prepared. by the time i got my food it was already cold and i could tell it was sitting out. the food would have been fine had it been hot. read more

I love diners and am very excited to come back and try more of my favorite diner foods here. This place was spotless. Like seriously unnaturally clean especially for a diner. I had French fries with cheese and my husband had chicken Mexican wrap and we both enjoyed our meals very much. The pancakes were very very dense - the complete opposite of light and fluffy. My fiends appetizer sampler was cold and the potato skins were "tough" - has anyone ever heard of a "tough" potato skin?? Diner itself is pleasant, staff is friendly but not that fast. read more

This place is mediocre. It's biggest benefit is its open 24/7. My wife and I both had wraps. Meh! The pieroges were ok. The fries were the best part of this place. DO NOT GET THE ONION RINGS!!! You will regret it if you do. They are the cheapest nastiest frozen out of a bag rings you will ever regret letting come near your taste buds. Stay away. This diner is horrible. The service is slow and uncaring. Food portions are much smaller than other diners and quality is poor. I should have known this as the place was empty at 6pm. Open faced turkey sandwich was okay... the broccoli salad was made with steamed broccoli that was mushy and then chilled, and the filling was bread mixed with gravy that was more of a soupy consistency. Waitress was horrible, saw 3 tables that didn't get their refills and were unhappy. I didn't eat the stuffing, took the smallest bite against better judgement sent it back. The waitress flat out said "you have to pay for it because you took a bite or they will take it out of my check." I said no worries, I'll pay for it. Travelling through from Toronto and always love finding a good diner and supporting the local community on the 'Road Trip'. Great hospitality first and foremost followed-up by a great dinner! Wasn't too busy when we arrived and were thus seated quickly. Lots on the menu to choose from...my wife was quite satisfied with the Cobb Salad, my son had the Cheeseburger with a side of chips which filled him and I had the Chicken Gyro which was great. The staff were on it! It's a great place, cool inside atmosphere. We would recommend it to other people/families travelling through the area in need of a place to stop and eat some great American style cuisine. read more

The service was ok staff did watch but didn't seem very pleasant. The food was disappointing however. Had a burger and potato skins. The burger was definitely wasn't fresh and wasn't cooked medium like I requested. The potato skins were also nothing to write home about. They were over cooked and consisted of 90% bacon. And I mean I like bacon but damn. There's wasn't much else. The cheese was even dry on them. So if I were you seek out one of the other diners just a few miles away. I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. read more

I've been here a number of times and the food is always good. They could work on their late night staffing, though. I stopped on a Tuesday around midnight after a movie and there was one waitress serving about 15 tables and the counter. (Roughly 40-50 people). She did a pretty good job of staying on top of it, but she had to constantly apologize because she was a little behind. Not her fault. That's a lot of people for one person. There was a group of six that walked in behind me and was basically turned away because there was no place for them to sit. Only half the restaurant was open because there was only one waitress. read more
