The big burger! Bacon, Onion rings, and quality beef.

We were just passing by on Mothers Day and decided to stop. Glad we did! Everything was freshly cooked, taste was on point and it wasn't crazy expensive. Yes, its in a bowling alley but the food was good, hot, fresh. The cook even checked in with us! We will be back.

Oh-so tasty Balsamic Chips from Dave's kitchen.

Farm-to-fork lead me and a friend to this classic West Sac location. This was a delightful experience, certainly a real change from my last visit here in the '90's! The refresh of 6 yrs ago still looks new. The food was amazingly fresh and well prepared (and presented). The beer selection was fine - it's "just a bowling alley" after all. The chef, Dave, went all out to make sure that everything was perfect. We started with the Basalmic Chips...topped with blue cheese crumbles. They were crispy, fresh, and oh-so tasty with the Basalmic Gastrique. The tri-tip street tacos included a very nice salsa that was pleasing to a wide variety of palates. The Chicken Parmesan Sandwich was yummy, even through we were truly hitting our capacity by that time. Maybe next time we will try only two items at a time...it was all so good!

The place reminds me of bars that I would have frequented in my twenties and felt strangely familiar. The bar keep/waiter was super friendly and laid back. Our party of two proceeded to order burgers, mine with regular fries and my dining companion the garlic fries. I made a few substitutions which were quickly accommodated with a smile. The burgers were soooo good! Cooked perfectly to order and the garlic fries are a must. So perfectly garlicky without any bitterness and delightfully delicious. The fries are perfectly between thin and steak, striking a balance that fits just about any preference.

They're known for their burgers, but even without ordering one, everything we tried was delicious. The fried sweet pickles with house-made ranch were my absolute favorite--perfectly crispy and so flavorful. The mac and cheese was rich and homemade-tasting, and the house chips with salsa and beer cheese dip were a great addition. Our friends ordered the mac-and-cheese grilled cheese (yes, really!) and devoured it, and the Reuben was also a huge hit. Definitely an 11/10 experience. We'd absolutely come back if we're in the area again.

During dinner, the Operations Manager, Michael, stopped by our table to introduce himself and let us know he was available if we needed anything. He checked in with us multiple times throughout the evening, which was appreciated. However, the experience ended on a disappointing note. As we were leaving, we asked about having our parking validated and were told that nothing could be done because they had no validation tickets available. While the food and service were excellent, after spending approximately $2,500 on dinner, we expected that an Operations Manager would have the authority or flexibility to offer some alternative solution. And the way he spoke to his staff was not very nice. Unfortunately, that final interaction overshadowed an otherwise enjoyable evening and left our group feeling that this would likely be a one-time visit.

The restaurant is chic and romantic. Other than it being on the louder side, the decor is warm with more dim lighting. What I also noticed and really appreciated is that the tables were spacious and placed farther apart from each other, so you're not crammed with other people. My only complaint is location is on K St, which is hard to find parking and there is no valet. The food was great (details below) and we definitely plan to be back. Also, scallops on the menu would be amazing because that's my favorite entre to get when I eat out. I hope they add it! Focaccia bread with cherry compote: (5/5). So good! This came as a compliment from the chef and it was delicious. The bread was soft and warm. The toppings paired so well with it. They have just the focaccia bread on the menu, which I'm sure is great. If they add it with the toppings we would have ordered more. lol Zero proof strawberry daiquiri: (5/5) very good and had a nice strawberry flavor. It is on the sweeter side but I enjoyed it Pork belly: (5/5) also so good! I love pork belly and order it all the time. The pork belly was nice and tender. The glaze/sauce had a nice sweetness to it and the veggies complimented it very well. One of the best pork bellies I've had! Braised short ribs: (5/5) very good and what you expect from short ribs. The short ribs were nice and tender. It came in multiple pieces so easier to cut and eat. The sauce is on the lighter side, letting the meat flavor shine through. The mash and veggies were good as well Salmon: (3.5-4/5). Salmon was cooked well. The seasoning was more plain like a dry rub? I would have liked a glaze or something. It was decent though. Smashed crispy potatoes: (5/5) very good! They were hot and crispy. Had good seasoning. Pairs well with a lot of dishes

We decided for our last night all together we would pick a highly rated one for a special meal. Magpie Cafe right in downtown fit the bill and we were thoroughly impressed by everything. We ordered just about every special plus many other dishes, some multiple, from appetizers through to desserts. It's in a beautiful area of the city, open to the street and green park. We opted to sit outside as it was a lovely evening. The beer menu had some regional favorites, all small and well chosen. For food we went all out, and I'll let the photos speak for themselves. Everything was so colorful and presented beautifully. Highlights were the pickles, fried asparagus, anchovies, and croquettes. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable about our dishes, she added to the experience. If you're in the area, this restaurant is worth a stop. They even have a cafe in the airport!

The drink contained gin, strawberry syrup, and fresh lemon basil. It was light and refreshing and the perfect spring summer drink. Then we had the baby eggplant which was marinated in a soy glaze. It also had some sort of peanut sauce base. This was a delightful bite. Both of us were very impressed. The presentation was gorgeous. Clearly still on my eggplant craze. One of the reasons we went to Magpie was for the trout dip. In a shocking turn of events, they didn't have it. I think it was an old menu. Maybe their winter menu. This was a bummer. Instead, they had a salmon dip. We got that, and I wish it was more flavorful/smokey. Normally, I'm not a smokey seasoning person, but I think it goes nicely with fish. The chips though were really good. I love a kettle chip. I thought they would be thicker, since the dip was thicker. I'm glad they served the dip with the spoon. We also had the stone fruit salad. I was shocked it didn't come with a cheese, but after I tasted it, the creamy yogurt successfully filled that void. Once again, the plating was gorgeous. I think the peaches were good, but I can tell that later in the summer, these peaches will be even more delectable. I think the pistachios were an excellent choice to this salad. For my main course, I had the painted hills flat iron steak with a Chimichurri sauce and crispy smashed potatoes. The steak was well cooked, and with the seasoning of the chimichurri, it was a delightful bite. Sam had the gnocchi with pesto and fresh tomatoes. The gnocchi was fluffy. Both she and I thought that the pesto was good, but we both wish that we wish there was more of it. I love pesto though, so I am always going to think that. It came in dollops, rather than mixed in, so I think that was part of the problem. We also had to get dessert. I had the ice cream sandwiches. They were made with lemon thyme shortbread cookies with vanilla Guenther's Ice Cream. I wish it was a stronger vanilla taste or a flavored ice cream. The cookies were too good though. Sam had the lavender panna cotta. Normally I am not a huge panna cotta fan, but this one was delicious. It had such a strong lavender taste, in a good way. It kind of tasted like I was eating lotion because of the thickness of the panna cotta with the lavender flavor.

There was a large group at a table that the server was assisting. We waited at the door for a few minutes and then were told to sit anywhere that wasn't reserved. We chose the Rueben sandwich w/side salad and the Chicken tenders w/garlic fries. The chicken was amazing! The batter is homemade along with the ranch dressing. The batter was crunchy and flavorful and the chicken was tender and juicy. The Rueben had home cooked corned beef, homemade thousand island dressing and sauerkraut. It was served on a bun.
