My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by Caravan Kebab. Magnificent lamb saag (recommend the very spicy kind) and great shish sandwiches. Sadly, there is no naan, but this place is quite eclectic and mixes-in other cuisines (like Russian, Greek, Middle Eastern). We also tried the masala--but it was a little thin in texture and sweeter than the masala we are used to in San Francisco. My entire family agrees that their food is great, and that Tatyana, the Ukrainian lady who co-owns this restaurant with this other guy, is always super nice. Even my 7-yr-old, who is the world's pickiest eater, approves their food (especially cabbage rolls and Russian blintz). Their borscht is the best ever, just as Nancy Leson once wrote in her article. And their kebab sandwich is definitely worth driving to that end of Edmonds for quick, inexpensive lunch. But we have one problem; it's this other guy who is the co-owner. One time, we brought a coupon we printed off Google, which was supposedly good for $5.00 off 2 Dinner entrees, but he said it's good only if we order the specific dish shown in the picture on the coupon (which, nowhere on the coupon, there was any fine print about this), and he also asked us where we found such a coupon. The other time, we had another kind of coupon for basically the same deal, which we got from a ValPak mailer, and he didn't want to accept that either. Whenever we come into restaurant, Tatyana gives us a warm welcome and opens the door for us and everything, but this other guy always just sits at the table by the door and doesn't even lift his face up to acknowledge our presence. I guess he has something against us. But with all that agony with him, we still keep coming here, because that's how much we love their food. And by now, we have learned our lesson: don't bother trying to use any kind of coupon at this restaurant. read more

Another hidden gem. Downtown Edmonds is our usual go-to for dinner but we've wanted to check out this place in the Firdale center. It looks very nondescript on the outside but it's very charming within. And the food - very tasty indeed! I had the chicken kebabs, husband had the lamb - both were moist and flavorful. I also had the cauliflower soup - garlicky goodness! And the humus was smooth and topped with smoky paprika. All were very reasonably priced, too. We will definitely be back. read more

Have ate here several times since first review. Still great service every time. Took my parents both in their early 70's, they loved the place. Glad it has calmed down since my initial review after the Seattle times write up the food has actually gotten better and more consistent. I used to go to this place when in Pomegranit, which I loved, and I was a little dismayed when they changed, but now I am a Caravan Kebab convert. Why? They make the best damn Saag Paneer I have ever had in my life, creamy spinach with cheese, wondeful spices and cream and their Chaana Daal is fabulous, with chickpeas, tomatos, garlic and I always get their garlic Naan bread, there is nothing better, I go now once a week, and I am so lucky that I live 2 minutes from there, the hostess, Tatyana is very sweet and nice, and the owner Shahzad is very friendly too, great restaurant! read more

I was hungry for indian food so we checked this place out tonight based on the great reviews. The food and service were so amazing I have to write a review! We were greeted at the door and immediately seated. We ordered three appetizers to share with our kids and two entrees. The apps were brought out in courses which was fun for our kids - we started with the garlic naan which was so fresh and the sauce it was served with was delicious! My 3 year old was asking for, "More naan?!" before bed tonight! Next came the vegetable pakora which we all inhaled, then the pita and hummus. The pita was amazing and warm. I ordered the Mutter Paneer which is my favorite indian dish and this was BY FAR the best I've had. I have no idea what they use in the sauce, I wish I did, because it blew my mind. My husband had the chicken tikka masala and was equally impressed, he said it was one of the best he's had. Our waiter was so kind to our kids and provided such great service, we really had just a wonderful experience. We will definitely be ordering again, soon. This seems like it would be "the neighborhood Indian restaurant" with great food, but it is actually so much more. First of all, the menu is Indian, Pakistani, Greek, Mediterranean, Russian, and Ukranian. So it much more just on that front alone. The service is fantastic - the owners are the chefs are the servers are the cashiers - they seem to do it all, and they do it all well - so friendly and pleased to find you enjoying their dishes. Recently we got into a long conversation with the chef about how he has found new sources for happy, organic meat and will be offering that whenever possible. Plus, this is the best borscht in Western Washington. Don't be surprised by the bizarre suburban-mall location... this is a place people drive from all over the county to enjoy! read more

I had a Groupon for this restaurant but they would not honor it because the fine print stated that a reservation is required. This was a Sunday evening and there were 2 other tables occupied. I think it is underhanded to lure people in with the Groupon and then not accept it - I could understand if there was a full house but that was certainly not the case here. I have never complained or even posted anything on Yelp or anywhere but I want to warn people that if they have a Groupon they need to make a reservation before using it. The restaurant told me I could receive a full refund for my Groupon so I assume I'm not the first to complain and I will pursue a refund for my Groupon. read more

Went for a pick-up order last night. Was glad that the person on the phone suggested we not get the pomegranate chicken for a to-go. I appreciate that. Restaurant was quite beautiful and intimate, staff (owner?) quite friendly. Food was solidly good. Got a mutter masala with paneer, which was sweeter than anything I've previously had called "mutter masala," but I tasted the connection with those previous dishes. It was good. Unique. I dug it, and the paneer was laudable. My favorite was the vegetable biryani, as it was super soft rice and spiced deliciously, and included some pomegranate seeds, which I've never had before in a veg biry. Really nice. I got some other stuff too. The samosas didn't hold up super well under to-go conditions, but were enjoyable enough, even though kinda soggy by the time I got em home (there was a yogurt sauce on them - another new one for me). Anyway, I'll go here again. Seems like a good spot for a date, especially if your date doesn't already know about it, cause there's not much else around that Firdale Village, even though it's just off of 99. read more

My daughter and I went here for dinner one evening right after opening. The smell was heavenly; I'd been driving by it for years and finally looked at their website and was impressed with the broad range of choices on their menu. We placed our orders and the food arrived quickly, but the waiter had mistaken my order and brought chicken tikka masala instead of the shish taouk I asked for. The place is small and it was pretty noisy, so maybe the waiter didn't hear me correctly and I politely told him I'd ordered shish taouk. He looked puzzled but dutifully took the dish back to the kitchen, where I thought he was going to replace it. But no, he came back almost immediately and insisted it WAS what I had asked for. Well, how do you respond to that? It wasn't like I was going to get in a fistfight with him over it. He was unwilling to yield the point (apparently here not only is the customer not always right but they assume you don't remember what you ordered just five minutes ago) so...tikka masala it was. It was very good, just not what I'd wanted, and his refusal to admit his mistake didn't make a good impression. I may make a return trip--that menu is so fantastic--but I have to wonder whether I'll be allowed to actually try the things on it that I want, or will have to settle for whatever the waiter feels like bringing instead. read more

LOVE the chicken tikka masala here! It's the only tikka masala I've had that has actual flavor instead of relying on spice for flavor. I'm a none- or one-star kinda gal (much to my husband's chagrin) and I've found that most tikka masla is either bland or so spicy it melts your tongue off. The tikka masala at Caravan Kebab is incredibly flavorful even with zero extra spice (I told them NO stars). I got take out so can't speak to the wait service but the gentleman who helped me was very friendly. Definitely recommend trying this place out! read more

Love it, love it, love it. I have been coming here for about one year. I have seen the transition from the Pomergrant to the Caravan Kebab. As long as the owners keep, on the menu, their tantalizingly rich beet borscht , with sour cream, I shall continue to frequent the Caravan. All I can say is everything I had was delicious. There were four of us eating, and everyone from my 1 year old daughter to my 80 year old grandma loved the food. We started out with the Baba Ghanouj and Zesto Feta, both were amazing. Then Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable masala, and the Chicken Kebab. Nothing but great things to say about the food. I've eaten a LOT of Indian/Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food, and this place is top notch. I had the vegetable masala, and the seasoning was perfection; their chai was delicious as well. We were served by a very cheerful guy who was by himself but working as hard as he could. My only complaint would be that we got served after a table that had arrived after we had, but we had ordered an appetizer, and the quality of the food (and the friendliness of our server) makes up for it. I love the combination of Mediterranean and Russian cuisine on one menu. All the food is very good. Unfortunately, they serve alcohol and some of the dishes are made with wine, so it's not technically a "halal" restaurant. Just the meat they use is halal. read more

I feel bad writing this because the people here are so nice. I've been in twice and had very similar experiences. The space is nice, soft lighting and nicely decorated although the music is always too loud. However, the food is mediocre at best. I don't think my butter chicken had any butter in it. The spanakopita was clearly frozen at one time with sesame seeds sprinkled on to try to make them fancier. I'm not sure what the desert was (again, I feel terrible about writing this-they even gave me free desert) but I took one bite and it was so chewy I could barely swallow it. My BF had the beef stroganoff (he doesn't really care for Indian or Mediterranean food) and it was orange. He said it wasn't terrible but tasted nothing like stroganoff. And it was ORANGE. Lovely people own and operate this fabulous little spot. I live in the neighborhood and had been told it was excellent about three years ago. Last fall all the stars aligned and we had our first dinner here, and what a treat. Everything from appetizers, cauliflower soup, butter chicken, lamb was fantastic. On subsequent visits we've had delightful and consistanly good food and sampled many dishes each visit trying something new, the Mediterranean salsa( I can't remember the name of this dip made from roasted red peppers ) served with pita bread we order every time and has become a favorite.We've taken out of state guests here who months later are still raving about the dinner we had there. In six months since our first visit we've dined here four times, each experience is excellent, consistently well prepared food, sweet people own and cook all is the food with love and passion for sharing their culture through food . It is an unassuming, welcoming, homey spot otucked away in the corner of a strip mall, this little gem of a dining experience is truly a find. read more

Wow! What a wonderful little find. It is hidden away in Firdale Village but worth seeking out. It is nice to have good Indian food in Edmonds again and fun to have Mediterranean and Eastern European choices to go with it. The fish masala was excellent, and we enjoyed the cheese burek and eggplant roll appetizers. Another couple at a nearby table were very pleased with everything that they tried. We were there late on an uncrowded Thursday evening, and the chef-co-owner sat down and chatted with us. The prices are quite reasonable. We plan on spreading the word. read more

You've got to be kidding me... we have a restaurant this good in our neighborhood?!? Food having this level of texture or spices and seasoning normally require a trip down to the city... or places like Washington DC. I gave Caravan the nod for dinner following the World Cup action. I ordered the Samosas (4.95), Chicken Tikka Masala (11.90) and Seekh Kebab (11.90) as a calibration meal. If these scored well, there would be follow on orders delving deeper into the menu. The order was for takeout. Approaching the restaurant, I was amazed by the aromas and felt I was on Capitol Hill or the Ave. Opening the food at home, I was impressed by the amount of food and careful inclusion of veggies around the basmati rice. The variety of veggies used in the kebab were also impressive. Carrots, potatoes, red/green peppers, broccoli, green beans, spinach and other leafy greens. I was going to get veggie credit despite having such meaty dishes. The samosas were draped in tangy-sweet sauce and expertly fried with the mashed interior bursting with flavor. The Tikka Masala had a light cream/tomato sauce combination that was not too thick and appreciably had white chicken meat that was not of mystery. Now the Kebab was flat out amazing. The seasoning against the fresh lemon wedge played beautifully with the tamarind chutney. I've forced myself to stop eating to give my stomach a chance to catch up with the brain, but my mouth is watering thinking about making another run to finish it off. Nevermind the great value, I would travel to faraway neighborhoods for food this detailed. Definitely give Caravan a shot. read more

Awesomely unique with food that is always surprisingly flavorful and absolutely delicious. My advice is to chose the menu item with the craziest name and try it. Make sure you stay for desert, it is just as unique and tasty. The place is the definitive hole in the wall. I advise you not to go so that there is always a table for me. read more

My husband and I would never have eaten here except we were hungry and it was pouring rain, so we stopped in to give it a try. That was about one year ago, and we have returned at least a dozen times. The people are warm and friendly and the service very good. The food that I have tried is always delicious and fresh, although I can understand why it takes some people aback to have so much ethnic variety all on one menu. I go out of my way to point out this place to people because it is hard to notice and I want the restaurant to stay around. The interior is much more appealing than the outside would indicate. I have wandered into Caravan Kebab not expecting much since it's in Edmonds of all places. What I found (now I have been there many times) is that the people are so nice, the service is great, but most of all the food is out of this world! I am vegan so overall eating out is not easy but last night I had a soup there made of truffles, avocado and lentil (totally vegan and healthy) that was to die for! This restaurant has so much to offer because it is truly authentic and homemade one of a kind dishes. It should be tucked away in Belltown but then the prices would be a lot higher. It is ridiculously cheap and I left feeling guilty about how low the bill was. read more

My wife and I decided to try a local restaurant featuring Indian and Middle Eastern food. What a wonderful and delightful surprise! I had the Lamb Casserole. My wife had Haandi Curry and Borsch soup. We shared a Persian Salad. The delicious bread came directly from the traditional clay oven - warm, comforting, complementing the meal exquisitely. We found the food delicious, the portions generous, the prices reasonable. The decor is charming and unpretentious. The hostess was congenial and sweet. The gracious owner shared anecdotes and obviously had high standards and was demonstrably committed to our having the finest dining experience. I highly rate this aromatic oasis in Edmonds, hiding a bit from the road which added to the intimacy and romance of our evening. Decided to check out Caravan Kebab thanks to a groupon deal and wasn't disappointed. The outside is not much to look at, but as soon as we walked in we felt transported to a different place. The atmosphere is wonderful with hanging tapestries and cultural artwork. Having been to Turkey once, I ordered the Adana Kebab and was blown away. The flavors were everything I remembered. I would definitely recommend the Caravan Kebab to anyone looking for a great international food experience. My only tip would be to ask for a table away from the windows during the winter - it can get a little cold, but nothing a little chai won't fix! read more
