I was here for selling my car as I felt their online quote was decent. Things I liked: - Location is convenient and well maintained and they honor the appointment times and estimate was quick and easy. - The will let you fill the online questionnaire and give a you a quote that you can take to the store. Thangs I didn't like: - No matter how honest you are during the online questionnaire they are not going to honor the price. They will low ball and offer a number much lower than that. -- They gave me 8600 for 2010 Corolla. Single owner no issues at all and I already mentioned tires probably needs replacement. -- Once I enter the factory they offered me 7600. Straight $1000 less and the reason, 3 panels needed a pain job. Those panels are naturally faded when you park in Sun. -- Now I go back home and and get a quite again saying that 3 panels needed a paint online quote says $8000. Which I am sure they will not honor and tell me some other reason this time Overall start here, use their quote as a base and don't bother wasting any more time beyond that. I just called couple of other dealers and finally sold my car for 9400 to AutoNation. Almost ~$1000 more than what I was ok with initially with CarMax. After spending 6 hrs on Saturday buying our new car at a San Leandro dealership (where they offered us $100 for our trade-in) I was so depressed to have to go to yet another car shop to try to sell our old car on Sunday. I was surprised at how much their online offer was, which was thousands more than what the Chevy dealer offered. Trust the other reviews, it was sooo easy! We submitted our car for an offer online, made an apt, presented that paper in the front business office. They took my key, title, registration, and license to go check the car. An hr later, the nice lady who helped me presented me with a few pieces of paper to sign and then handed me a check! It was a very fair offer and I'm so relieved to be done with this whole car shopping/selling weekend. CarMax really salvaged my crappy Saturday. This is the weirdest carmax Ive ever experienced especially cause I purchased my car here. After buying my car I obviously get oil changes accordingly. After calling in for my routine oil change, my 4th time going in for an oil change, they said they dont do oil changes anymore..... and that all they do is major services and repairs. They literally told me to try going to fremont Carmax for an oil change.... 15+ miles away. Does corporate know that these service reps are turning down business? I went in to buy a car. I got a Sal the salesman that signed my document everywhere that said applicant or buyer. He didn't know what he was doing. Finally done and drove from Pleasanton to Stockton at 7:30ish.... Car overheating, heard hissing and barely got it in my carport for it to flash, make noise, say overheating and car stalled into spot. I called and spoke to manager them telling them to pick up the car and they could have it back. I asked them if I could go to Modesto to sign and get my refund. He said yes. I said I want my 2500 CASH back in hand. Today, Modesto manager calls me and said he scheduled pick up. He asked if I would like to look at cars- which I declined. I told home I want my cash and stated since I didn't get it there it would be a bank deposit only. I declined and told him to send it back to Pleasanton. I called Pleasanton and the sale manager never took my call or retuned my call. Modesto manager told Pleasanton they could cash refund and they said they were doing it. One thing I love about the CarMax model is fair trade in offers and no fast talk/ need worry about what you're signing. NIGHTMARE test drive. Paid $279 to ship vehicle to the Bay Area. Had to call in to check status of shipment set my own appointment, even though it states the store will call you once vehicle arrives. Get to my appointment at 6pm after a long day at work to be told I can't do the 24hr test drive advertised everywhere due to me wanting my own mechanic to inspect it?! I agree to test drive the vehicle there since I paid to have it shipped. Is soon as I merge on the freeway the low fuel level shows up. The vehicle starts to slow down and completely SHUTS OFF!!! No fuel in a vehicle you let a client test drive?! This was the scariest experience in my life. Vehicle zooming by me 75mph and I'm in the far left lane. Called multiple times, took forever to get someone from just up the street to bring a gallon of fuel. Get back to the dealership at 8pm exhausted and all they can say is "what do you want", "did you not notice the low fuel light when you left" no apologizes ... sad. The staff greeted customers with "how can I help you" and instead greeted my husband with "you here for parts?" This "greeting" was given after my husband had been waiting for over 10 minutes in line and a white customer walked in and was acknowledged and helped before a comment was even made to my husband. Good morning, I was helped recently by a service employee named Gush Johal. His service is exceptional. I just bought my car and had a large crack on my window and immediately called Carmax to have the window checked out. Carmax replaced my window but when they replaced it. The window did not fit correctly. I explained to Gush my situation and he went above and beyond and was able to get me the correct class and it was the Glass that came with my car. It really meant a lot to me. Gush was also diligent and I felt cared about by him. I would come all the way back to Pleasanton just for his service. I also felt like the service team there was polite and thorough. the beautiful lady in the front who I assume is a service employee was also very kind and welcoming. This review applies only to selling your car to CarMax and not to buying cars here. The overall process is very pleasant and efficient. I made a same-day appointment online and was promptly greeted when I arrived. The appraisal process is very straightforward and you can be in and out within 30-45 minutes. The staff is very friendly and the CarMax cash offer to buy your car is good for 7 days. So why 1*? Because in my limited experience it appears that CarMax will only provide a lowball offer that is well below what you can obtain from a private party with a little effort. Visited a year ago and was offered $8,000 for my Aucra MDX. 3 weeks later I returned and my offer was reduced to $7,500. Really - $500 depreciation on an 9-year old car in just 3 weeks? Ended up selling on for $9,300 in 2 days after placing an ad on autotrader. Today I visited CarMax again and was offered $2,000 for a 10-year old vehicle that KBB values at $5k+ If you do not have the time or inclination to deal with the hassle of selling your car to another individual then by all means CarMax is the place for you. I got a great deal, and CarMax made everything easy. A little too easy: my car was missing a manufacturer-supplied part, and they only offered reimbursement after I shelled out for it at the dealer. A nice gesture, but it should have been included from the beginning. Other than that, my salesperson was super helpful in guiding me through the approval process, and I am happy with the new set of wheels I got. It's one of the best used car experiences I've ever had. So I went to the CarMax in Pleasanton off 580. It was a Saturday and it was a zoo. The reception desk took my name, set an appointment for like an hour later. I was like "Argh, a wait." So I went outside to see if the car was outside on the lot. I figured I could look it over. I looked at black BMWs, I looked at bigger BMWs, I looked at a Mercedes too. But my BLUE BMW was nowhere to be found. I was on my way out the door. Discouraged. BUT - I made a stop at the reception desk to ask, "Hey, do you have still have that one BLUE BMW from your website?" The desk man looked it up and said, "Why yes, it's just in the back lot. I can have someone bring it around." Christian greeted me warmly, made small talk, and then disappeared behind some doors to fetch the BMW. Minutes later it appeared and we drove it. Bells, whistles, turbo. Yes. I was happy. After the drive we went over the inspection report, the vehicle history (aka CarFax), and pricing for extended warrantees. Yes, you can get this all before you buy a car! :) I thanked Christian and said I had to make a few more test drive stops but could return the following day with the family CFO (aka my wife) around mid-afternoon, New Years eve. I test drove a few more cars that afternoon and that evening talked over decisions with my lovely wife. She wanted to see the car also, so I texted Christian that we would be by but in the morning. That was around 7:55pm. At 8pm he replied saying he had another appointment in the AM, but he would arrange for someone to take care of us. Morning arrived and at the CarMax appointment wall, my wife and saw on their screen "11am Percy Chow". Yeah, that was cool. The receptionist called up Christian. He appeared and mentioned that his 11am couldn't make it, so he was available. (Yay!) We went over a few other cars - a black BMW, a bigger BMWs, and a Mercedes too, but my wife said, "OK, let's just see the BLUE one shall we?" Christian took us to the back lot where it was parked. My wife went, "wow." ( That's the universal sign of stage 1 spousal approval ). She looked over the car. Sat in it to assure that our kids would fit and then said, "Do you like this car? OK, let's talk inside." The entire credit application and such were done at a computer. There was no back and forth sales guy to sale manager to finance manager thing. Approval took place right at the desk where we all sat. And by the way, Carmax is literally no haggle. The price on the car IS the price on the car. I opted for an extended warranty plan and the CarMax plan is perhaps one the best in the business from a coverage and pricing standpoint. Third party plans are sold by car sections - like drivetrain or cooling systems. But most people have don't know the difference between a drivetrain and cooling system. So if a drivetrain only plan is $1000 and drivetrain + cooling + brakes + electronics is $5000, everyone will opt for the $1000 one. But when the car breaks down and it's a cooling issue, the warranty won't cover it. So people get mad. The CarMax plan is comprehensive - meaning it's everything, engine, transmission, cooling, electronics, etc. It won't cover the stuff that wears out like tires, wiper blades, or brake pads. CarMax sells the warranty by mileage and deductible level and for 5 years. So you can choose 75k, 100k, or 150k miles with deductibles like $0, $250, $500, etc. The big plus too, you can go to CarMax OR any mechanic - as long as they can guarantee the work for 6mo/6k miles. In my case, the extended warranty was about 5% of the purchase price. Once the computer stuff was done, we met with Alicia in finance to sign papers. She was nice too. And the paperwork was about 20 min. During that time, the car was being cleaned and prepped. Once done, Christian walked us out to the "launch pad" where my BMW was fitted with a big yellow bow. My 5 star experience is now two stars. I brought my car in Feb and noticed that the key doesn't turn 180 degrees to turnoff and release from the ignition. One day last week it took 20 mins for the key to finally release. TWENTY MINUTES!!! I thought it was the steering wheel locking, but the issue is the car is registering as still being in "drive" when it's really in "park". This went unnoticed when I was sold the car and I had to go to the dealership and pay $900 to repair the car! My car isn't even 3 months old and I am beyond pissed that the Carmax warranty expired and they would not fix it. Not to mention they barely answer the damn phone at this location. I love my car and this is the first time I've purchased from Carmax, but will be better aware if I choose to buy from them again! Trade in value was between $9500 and $11.5 Private party was $10.5 - $12.5 Kbb "sell it now" value was $9,300, and you have to take it to a dealer (kbb probably sells my lead to that dealer). Car max "sell it now" said $7500. So I took it to the kbb dealer (Rose Motors) looking for the higher amount, $9300. But Rose came up with a list of reasons why my car was only worth $7500, including a code that the cat. converter might go bad some day (?) - even though the check engine light never came on, and other mechanics never mentioned this. Never heard that one before. So I left, thinking they'd stop be before I left. It no. So I drove to Car Max. An hour later they offered me $9500! Sold. Rose just got greedy. To be fair, the chairs at CarMax are really uncomfortable, so there's that. :) read more

Customer service is so horrible in the service department that I regret buying a car here. You would think if the check engine light comes on as you drive out of the lot, CarMax would be at least somewhat accommodating to get it taken care of. Instead - they couldn't get it checked within the 7 day window that they offer a full refund. That's just bad, dirty business. Second, when you do get an appointment, you wait 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledges you walking in. They ordered a part to fix my car, but needed to order another part and informed me they would need to keep my car longer... even though no one could tell me how long after I asked twice. They will call me on Monday and let me know (today is Friday). So I just got off work, paid for an Uber to come to CarMax and pick up a loaner car. I got here just before 6:00pm. It's now 6:43 and a lady just let me know that it would be at least 30 minutes to an hour before they would have something ready. Figured I would take all this wasted, frustrated time to write this review. Oh and a lady literally just shouted "can I get some service in here?" So at least I know someone else feels my pain too. Not worry about haggling is great. Price/Extended warrenty is great. I would defnitely recommend this place if people are buying their hondas and toyotas. It is unforunate that carmax treats $70,000+ car the same as $20,000 car. I guess when they take the car in, they didn't check paint as detail as real dealers. My car has a repainted bumper that is done bad (they didn't take the bumper off when they repainted it), they fail to disclose this, and I found out after I have taken the car home (4 hours away). Now I am in a situation where I either had to return my rare dream car or spend $1500 to fix it properly (even if fixed it won't have original paint). I guess it is part of my fault for buying a somewhat rare car from carmax. Experience wise, when you buy your Porsche, it feels the same as when you bought your first civic. Just come here to help my sister to sell her 2018 Honda Accord with 42000 miles on it. They offered $20,000 to my sister through online three weeks ago, but when we retrieved the Quote today it was down to $19,000 only. However we still come in try to sell it because my sister bought a brand new car already, by the time we dropped by, one of the mechanic ( about 6' ft tall, 250 lbs.) went to inspect the car and said that the engine has major mechanical defects, then the offer down to $17,000 only now, what a scammer just by listening, you can justify the engine has major problems. Too bad my sister insists to close the deal because she needs the cash as soon as possible. I have never in my life been treated so disrespectfully by numerous staff at this Car Max. First of all buyers beware because they snuck in a $5000 service contract WITHOUT mentioning one word about it. Very deceiving. The car is my daughter's and it broke down 2 months after the purchase in Oregon. The service company was not returning her calls. She ended up flying home while the car is still in Oregon. That money for the service contract was suppose to go to the down payment. When I went back in to complain, the manager stated they would never had done this without going over the contract which was BS. . It was a different manager than we bought the car from. I could not read his signature on the contract and he was not there. Then when I asked this manager about cancelling the contract and applying it towards the down payment he said I should keep the contract. The car is my daughter's and she doesn't have that kind of money. I stated this and he said "Well you are rich." I told him how presumptuous that was and said no I am not rich I am a retired school teacher. ( single income) He said well my wife is rich and she was a teacher. I thought this was extremely rude. Sure she is rich. She has a husband who earns a commission on selling service contracts to unsuspecting customer. I will continue to blast this review all over social media. And the local news i will implore others to buy their cars elsewhere and beware of their unjust underhanded tactics. read more

Over the last four years, my family has sold a total of 3 cars/trucks to Carmax, all at the Vallejo location. Every time, the customer service is really top notch. I recently went to get another car appraised at this location and, once again, very friendly and personable staff. So really, 5 stars on that end. The problem with buying and selling cars is that it comes down to the "bottom line." Way back when, I took a negotiations class at UC Berkeley as an undergrad, though it's pretty much the same course the MBAs take there. The pivotal lesson was that negotiations can be about building value rather than someone winning and someone losing, except when it comes to buying and selling cars. When it comes to buying and selling cars, generally you have to learn about all the "hardball tactics" you can and know how to use it to use them to your advantage. Otherwise, you're probably going to regret it financially for years to come. Since graduating, I've never bought a car for over invoice and I've never sold a car for less than Kelley. A lot of people say KBB trade-in value is too high and places like Edmunds or Nada is more accurate, well, never in my case. I bought a used Fiat for $13K, drove it for a year, and sold it to Carmax for $12K. So, coming full circle, my first experience selling to Carmax 4 years ago, I got pretty much got an unbeatable offer for my Fiat and really didn't have to do anything much other than sit around and sign. My mom then sold her Infinity G37 Sport for a great price shortly after, but a year later, we sold a Chevy Silverado with barely any miles on it and I noticed that the offer was lower than I had hoped. Still better than the rest, but not as much as I was anticipating. Then recently, going in with a 2014 Prius V with 32K miles, I got an offer for $13K, which is OK (for other people), but not me. Hahaha. I actually had a feeling this time around I wouldn't be selling to Carmax, but I wanted to get my base line offer before seeing my other options. Anyway, literally 2 days later, I sold my car to another competitor for $14,800. I have no idea how that company is actually going to make money because they're probably going to only sell it for $17K, but whatever. Not really my problem. To get that extra $1800 took minimal effort. I mean really minimal. FYI, the highest offer I got was $15,085, but after calling I didn't trust this small dealer, and the lowest offer I got was $11.8K. If you're really comfortable with Carmax and you want that check in hand right on the spot, then you can do worse than Carmax. BTW, yes, i completely understand that I could make an extra $2k by selling the car privately, but I'm just not into the hassle. I've done it before with classic cars before and I'm OK giving up the $2k and letting the dealerships earn it. The risk/reward ratio and time/labor expense just isn't favorable for private sales when you have these car "trade-in" business models around. So, Carmax right now for selling is average-OK, hence 3 star, in terms of price, but high marks in terms of convenience, especially if you want to cash a check the same day. The company I ended up selling it to takes 5 days to transfer to a bank account, but for an extra $1800 its worth the wait. read more

The 2nd guy on phone insisted I do the appraisal on the phone by taking the photos and answering questions and then come in for an appointment at 8:30pm... so I did. It wasn't easy as I had to work and drive 40 minutes to get to Dublin carmax and get a second driver to bring both cars with us. Then, I get in and while the sales gal who helped me was very sweet, she said it was too late to see the car and test drive and not sure why I was told that.. I asked to speak with a manager and she confirmed that it was too late even though I arrived at 8:30pm and they close at 9pm and told me to come the next day. I was treated very well at CarMax in Pleasanton. My appointment was for 11:30 am. I was not helped until 12:15 or so. Not a huge problem. However, no one came over to the waiting area to check on me to give me an update. My recommendation would be to have someone check on those waiting for their appointments. Offer them water or coffee or something. Once I was seen, it all went well. The Sales Person was friendly and not pushy at all. While I was waiting for the paperwork and all, he checked on me to let me know of the status. I wish I could remember his name. He is really tall. I remember that. Lol! I brought my car in for some touch up on 1-24. The Service Assoc., Jennifer, was very professional and friendly. She actually noticed some other areas that needed attention. I can't say enough about this dealership. I was very skeptical buying an Audi A7 from carmax because I wasn't sure how the service would be since it's not an Audi dealer. I've never been more wrong in my life. The sales process was cake (I'm in sales so I can appreciate that) very personal/knowledgeable sales people. Every single time I call in and ask the service department questions they are always going above and beyond to make sure my questions are answered. Cj at the front desk always goes above and beyond to make sure that everything is handled for me. I needed service on a car I purchased from CarMax. I purchased a warranty for the vehicle so it seemed logical to take it there first. I called the service department, but no one picked up the phone. I just left a voice message. I decided to drive down to the CarMax site near me. No one was at the desk and I am now waiting for 25 minutes. I went to a different window and asked the employee there if the service department was closed, but he assured me it was open, but that was the extent of his assistance. I decided to call, again, the phone does not even ring at the service desk. CarMax employees are walking by constantly, but I am a ghost to them. I suppose the best way to get attention here is to have a plan to purchase or sell a vehicle. read more

My husband and I was out looking for a larger vehicle foe me and we decided to go to Carmax. Searching through the lot I found two SUVs I was very interested in; Lexus and Jaguar. We went inside and inquired about the two. Short on time, we decided to go back the next day. So I went back the next day and requested the 24 hour test drive on the Lexus, my sales rep Edward made it happen. He was very nice and made my first experience there a pleasant one. So with my 24 hours with the car, I fell in love. Deciding to buy it, I went back the next day and Chase helped us. The nicest guy ever in sales, he made buying a car as if I was at the mall buying my favorite purse... thanks Chase!! I got my car that I am in LOVE with, had the beat experience ever at a car dealership, they made me feel comfortable and welcomed, wasn't pushed at all I to buying extras I didn't want. The worst. DO NOT BUY THE MAX CARE WARRANT. The program is a rip-off, the customer support horribly. In the end, It cost me more to have the car fixed with the warrant. After 8 weeks of paid for a rental that was not reimbursed, I still had to paid 4k to get the car fixed. The only thing I got from Carmax was lies and a runaround. read more
