I recently purchased a new car, now my 2013 SUV has been sitting around collecting dust. Since the car is paid for, I was not planning on selling it and just drive it until the wheels fall off. I went online to CarMax website, entered in my license plate and mileage, they gave me a higher quote then I expected, so I made an appointment also online to have them purchase my car. I made my appointment for Sunday afternoon, I was suprised on how busy it was! As I walked in I was greeted right away and told where to go for my appointment. They told me that the inspection process and their internal system process would take about an hour total. I got here at 2:30, around 4pm I still don't see my name on their TV screen with appraisals. I went to the desk and they said they were done, when I got the appraisal it was 28% less that what was stated online. It was because my sun roof was broken? The sun roof worked fine, I had it open on the way there. When I get into the car I see that the plastic clip that closes the sun roof is laying on the floor! It's an older car, I get it. But their appraiser broke the sun roof and did not even take accountability. I looked at what it will take to fix this and it's not going be cheap. So now my car devalued 28% due to them breaking my sun roof. read more

Definitely regret not taking the red flags I experienced more seriously.. picked a vehicle out online and paid to have it shipped to this location. Took a few days for them to have it ready for us once it arrived to come do the test drive. On the test drive the entire radio system wouldn't even power on.. completely broken. Thought that was so strange since they claim they complete these thorough inspections but atleast 2 locations examined it at this point and they didn't know the radio electrical system didn't work? Wish I would of walked away at that point and went elsewhere. Ended up purchasing a different vehicle and an additional car for my son about two months ago now. We were getting the sales pitch on the warranty and were very skeptical.. but we were assured that the clutch would be covered. That was an assurance that was worth it to us. Asked our salesman to confirm the clutch would be covered under warranty. He had a colleague come over and confirmed yes as well. Only two months later both vehicles started having issues. Found out the clutch needed a complete replacement. When submitted to the warranty because they sent us to a random shop initially we were told by that shop they denied the claim! Called the manager Fabian he told me he wanted it to be brought in so they could examine it themselves and we would go from there. They had it over a week! Finally receive a phone call from a man in service to discuss what needs to be done and the situation. I was eventually asked how I would feel if they offered to cover half the cost.. obviously not happy when I was told it would be under warranty. He said he would discuss with the manager and call me the next day.. he didn't. Finally get a call 2 days later and he simply says actually no we will not be covering anything now, what a joke! Never heard from Fabian again either so obviously they could care less about honesty and customer service. When you look it up you'll see there are a lot of claims that carmax falsifies their 125 point inspections and this location definitely proves that and encourages scamming customers. read more

Three bad experiences with this location. Twice I have tried to sell them my cars. And attempted to buy a car as well. I tried to sell a Porsche and Toyota on different occasions. I filled out the information on line received an offer (specific dollar amounts each time) and customer car code via email. Went in on a set appt they also confirmed. They confirmed the offer and appt twice on line Neither time did they have me in the system when I went to the Pleasanton offices. Had to manually fill out information again and wait additional time vs then being prepared. Sold the car to a private party instead. The system is terrible. I can't recommend using them to sell or purchase a car. Another time I went in, test drove a car, reached a deal, and started to write out a check and as I was closing they told me the car had 20k more miles on it than they advertised. They are not to be trusted and their systems are terrible. I would avoid them at all costs. I shared my experience with the manager and he was courteous and said it had never happened before. He said they have had IT issues but not like mine. Three poor experiences, that makes me a slow learner. They have used up all their chances with me. Obviously don't recommended them to you. Man, I get that this is a seller's market, but I have never in my life heard of a buyer having to chase down a car dealer so they can fork over good money for a used car. I've been trying to buy the car I test drove two days ago, but apparently they don't want my business so I'm buying my car elsewhere. The process for scheduling a test drive for a car I was interested in was very quick and easy. Was able to make the appointment this past Tuesday morning for a same-day test drive. Decided I wanted to buy the car and got a buyer's order to give to my credit union to finalize the loan. The next morning (Wednesday), my credit union sent back a list of a couple line item changes to the buyer's order they needed in order to proceed with funding. Called the Pleasanton Carmax phone number, pressed option 2 for Sales (they're selling a car I want to buy...so, I need Sales, right?), got transferred to a call center who said that the Sales department couldn't help me with the sale (lol wut?) so she transferred me back to the Pleasanton office. Waited on hold for several minutes but no response. Gave up and sent an email at 1:15pm to the rep who assisted me the day before. No response. I called again that same night about 45 min before closing to follow up. The woman at the desk said she'd take down my name and number and have the rep call me back the next day. No call back. At 1:09pm today I called the Pleasanton office AGAIN, was finally transferred to the rep who said he had been meaning to call me. I asked if he saw my email. "What email? I haven't looked...oh yeah, I see it now. Give me an hour to send over the updated document to you." By 4:45pm I hadn't heard back, so I made an appointment with another dealership today at 5:30pm to test drive another car. The rep texted me at 5:00pm. "Sorry I'm working on it I've just been really busy." Really? No one else was able to help you? The individual who patched me over to you this afternoon said the floor was pretty dead, so something isn't adding up. Y'all gotta fix your operations if you're swamping one guy with all the work. I would not recommend CarMax to anyone that's looking to trade in or purchase a new vehicle. I paid to have my car shipped from another location with the intent of purchasing it, and felt confident doing so because they claim to conduct safety/quality inspections beforehand. When I arrived to look at my car, it was a great experience and I ended up trading in my old vehicle for my new one. After a month or so, my new vehicle was due for a service, so I took it to my usual auto shop that I know and trust. Upon servicing my vehicle, the shop called to let me know that CarMax sold me a car with a missing part! It wasn't anything serious, but definitely should have been noted on the inspection they claim to do. I took my car to CarMax that day and let them know that they sold me a car with a missing part, and they immediately offered to help and scheduled me an appointment to have the part installed. That appointment went smoothly. A couple weeks later, I began to hear the sound of metal scraping under my car while driving, so I pulled over and noticed that the part they had installed was falling off! I use my car a lot for work and had an important day the next day, so I drove to CarMax immediately and let them know what had happened. They wasted my time, walking out to my car, laying on the cement and looking under my car, etc. just to tell me there was nothing they could do and blamed me for it falling off. In a panic, I called my usual shop and let them know my situation, and he told me to bring it in so they could take a look. The shop fixed my car in 5 minutes, and said that it took CarMax longer to explain to me why they couldn't help than it would for them to screw the part in correctly. I didn't have any issues until now, a little over a year after my purchase of the vehicle. My car wouldn't start yesterday, so I had it towed to my shop and found that I needed a new battery. He explained that it was a low quality battery, not even stock, that was leaking acid. You would think that this is another thing that should've come up on the safety/quality inspection. All in all, I've only had my car a little over a year and have had multiple bad experiences with this CarMax location. This review is for selling cars to CarMax only. Sold a car recently to CarMax. The whole experience was smooth and easy. Took the car to the dealership and had it evaluated. The associate provided a quote right on the spot. The quote was very clear with no hidden fees or complications. The quote was good for 10 days. This gives the sellers a flexibility to see if they can do better than the price from CarMax. Also, it is not like "take it or leave it" which adds pressure. Like that approach or no pressure to close deal on the same day. Took the car on last day of the quote period. The associate honored the quote price and within couple of hours the deal was done. They do ask for 10 days to settle any loan you have with 3rd party vendor. The 10 day interest payment is on you. However, their quote is very competitive better than private seller value. read more

I took it to my mechanic he discovered transmission had major problems , tires were bald , it needed a serious wheel alignment. This car was a total lemon which I sure CarMax was well aware of the mechanical issues with this car. So I returned the vehicle to the Dublin Ca location , once I returned this lemon CarMax attempted to give me a hard time regarding my $4038 cash down payment. They played so many games regarding my refund . I'm still waiting to receive the $120 I paid for the diagnostic I had performed on the vehicle. They claimed the check is in the mail ! They could have and should have given me my $120 for the diagnostic the day I returned that lemon . I was in search of a new to me car and was recommended by a colleague to check out CarMax. I really liked the concept of a no-haggle price. The number you see on the vehicle is what you pay. Pros: -less stressful since you don't negotiate a price -if there are no manuals in the vehicle and you want one, you can order one and they will reimburse you. Cons: -because there are so many makes and models of vehicles, the staff that work here aren't experts on vehicles you may be interested in. For example, the person that helped us didn't know how to open the trunk of a vehicle we were interested in. So be sure you do your own research. -unlike other car dealerships, there aren't complimentary snacks. They have coffee and water, but you would need to purchase your own snacks from a vending machine. Tips: -they don't advertise this, at least the person who was helping us didn't mention it, but another employee told us that they provide complimentary Lyft rides for customers that need a ride after they purchase a vehicle. read more

Although we did not buy from here, this lot is HUGE with lots of different cars available and an excellent range of cars. I would go here first, but it can be a bit overwhelming. Our saleswoman was nice and patient, but just ok- nothing special just doing her job. Kind of disinterested it seemed, but still ok. The appraiser was fast and very good and they sent us via email an appraisal within half an hour. He took pictures of the car and looked it over. We went for lunch as we waited! I was at the other dealership when we got the appraisal and I used this to negotiate the appraisal for my trade-in at this place. So perfect timing! I was surprised at the great appraisal I got from Carmax! I was happy with it as we got that car for a good deal and got pretty much what we paid for it minus taxes and we drove it for a couple of years and was considered used (although we bought it with only a few miles on it). So know that I believe used cars are more expensive now so you are getting a higher trade-in value for it. So I would say Carmax does this more so than other dealers bc they have such a tremendous inventory nationwide too. TIP# 1: So if you have a trade-in, I would say go to Carmax first to get a great deal on cars and a great trade-in value to buy a car at Carmax bc of their wide selection or to use as a negotiating tool to have other dealers compete with each other! This alone is valuable! Great inventory too-nice Porsche and Mercedes SUVs (nope, didn't get one of those-hubby is too cheap-ahem, I mean frugal!). Note that online they have even a larger selection, but they do charge extra since some of them are shipped from elsewhere-I like to support our local community and do not want to pay any extra charges anyway-so just be aware of that extra charge if they are from out of state or area. If I remember correctly, this was in smaller print online. Edited to add: one advice for Carmax- it was frustrating that some of the cars I looked at did not have a price yet and the salesperson could not get a price. Of course, those were the cars I really liked for myself! If you had those prices ( and the salesperson did not know when they will have them) up then I may have bought those cars! So I deducted a star for that and it was not excellent, but ok overall. I did give 4 stars for very good mainly bc of the good appraisals which will bring customers to you! So work on pricing, before putting it with all the other inventory on display! Like 3 out of 5 cars had no price and at the end when I asked and she said that I said "Of course not, it's always the ones I WANT that don't have the price!!!" I came here to buy a car for my daughter. The process was pretty simple and paid cash for the car that my daughter had chosen. Drove off and only drove 7 miles when the engine light came on. The place was closed so had to return it the next day. I was worried about the return policy and whether it was going to be a hassle. But it wasn't. Overall a great experience even though I didn't wind up buying a car from them. Decided to go with buying new due to the used prices still being high. Tips: when the car has multiple owners without explanation or records of the maintenance/service, I would skip that car. Would focus those that are leases or fleet vehicles. Obviously the scrutiny checks they go through are not that thorough. Recommendation: I would figure out whether you want to factor in the extended warrantee since that costed more money. Also the person performing the transaction played a little on my wife's fears. So again I would suggest the car based on above and have that worked out beforehand (some still were covered by the mfg warrantee). One small con: even though we chatted to the sales person we worked with and explained on what happened and confirmed we would be returning the car, when we walked in the person at the front desk asked us how we could be helped. When I explained we were returning the car because the engine light went on after driving the car 7 miles, the guy asked if we want to have the light checked which we proceeded to say no we are returning it. It was a little red flag at first that the return was going to be a hassle, but in the end it worked out fine thank goodness. I'm still giving them 5 stars for that reason (no hassle return). Beware of buying vehicles in this dealership. Make sure you check the vehicle before you drive off because once you drive off and you find damages to the car they will say that it was caused by nature of the road and give you excuses and say that they had done a through inspection in the vehicle all around. Unfortunately I trusted and had good faith on this dealership and did not do an inspection of my car upon purchasing it and I finally got to detail my car for the first time just to find that there was a damage on the windshield in a part of the car that no one will see unless you really look at it yourself. They did not take accountability for being a good dealership and blamed the issue on the owner. They say they take pictures of the cars from inside and out and they got pictures of everything and they cannot let you see it yourself because they don't want anyone to point out that the person who inspected the vehicle missed the damage. I am never going to buy a car with CarMax and will not refer anyone to this dealership and I will tell everyone I know to not come to this place especially in Pleasanton. I can't believe I went and paid $275 to get my car detail cleaned before getting an appraisal from this location. I got three different appraisals elsewhere and the Carmax appraisal was $1000 lower than the lowest appraisal I'd gotten before and that's even after I got it detailed cleaned. The employee who helped me was very lifeless although I would hate having a desk job all day and have difficulty pulling out some charisma by 6 PM on a Tuesday. Carvana: 27% lower than Carmax In short, Carmax gave the best price and made the process of selling my car to them very simple and convenient. From the inspection process to the final sale documents, everything was smooth and easy. Julianne is great. I wanted to like Carvana but their price seemed completely out of touch with market. When trying to buy a car from them, the most desirable cars they list on their site are in the process of being sold. I also listed my car with TRED and Craigslist. - TRED was clunky, did an embarrassing job of listing my vehicle on the multiple online car buying sites (that's their main value prop) and garnered 2 interested parties, one of whom was not a serious buyer and another who felt too price sensitive. - Craigslist was what you'd expect, hyper price sensitive buyers who ghost you, although I've had positive experiences selling cars with CL in the past. We met with Kenneth, he was extremely helpful, professional, and never pushy. He had a great sense of humor, he even got into the backseat to demonstrate leg room. The reason why this was funny, is because I'm five feet tall, and he is well over 6feet. I knew we wanted the car, and I loved how relaxed Kenneth was during the entire process. We heard that they offer more than dealers, but less than private sales. Still, avoiding hassle and time commitment to marketing the car ourselves has nice appeal. We dropped by without an appointment but were greeted immediately and helped by the friendly staff. Lorissa was our main rep, and in about an hour or so managed to give us two offers - one from Carmax and a higher one from KBB. It was in-line with our estimates, but on the lower end. The offer is good for 7 days; upon expiration a new appraisal is needed. Overall, a nice place to explore buying or selling cars. They have free coffee, free wifi, a kids play area, plenty of seating and outlets, and TV to watch NFL action if you come on a Sunday. read more

I had an appointment to view a fully optioned 2017 Audi Q7 Prestige but I had to wait over an hour, In person, the vehicle was completely different. The interior was very filthy, it had stains everywhere. The leather was very worn for a 2017 vehicle with only 48k miles. It had a foul smell which seemed to be urine. It had broken clips in the engine bay, etc. Additionally, the tires were worn and cracking Considering all this the vehicle is priced higher than average in which you expect it will be perfect. This car needed ALOT of work and should be priced 5k lower. Anyways they wasted my time and this could have easily been avoided had they posted photos not avoiding and showing the wear/damages and stains. If CarMax purposely angles the photos to not show the entire seat or part of the vehicle ther they are 100% hiding something. I used to love CarMax but you definitely lost me on this one. The offer and appraisal wasn't the issue. Was spot on. The customer service was terrible. I check in, give the keys, they inspect. Then they don't even tell me anything about the process and I'm just sitting waiting. I finally go up and the guy says he can print out my offer. Then he say they close at 9pm and it's 8:40. And that it will take 45 minutes for the paper work. And the guy doesn't even bother to say anything after. I then say "so what? I come back tomorrow?" He says yes. Why on earth would you allow people to make appointment at 8:30pm knowing that you close at 9pm?? So dumb. Then he says they open at 10am on Saturday. Simple, Seamless, Iconic! I was able to get my BMW appraised, and received a more than fair price with no hassle and great service... So much so that I sold it to them and turned around and purchased a new vehicle from them in return! Their Appraisal Team was fast and respectful of my time. I went to this CarMax twice to test drive and the first sales person I was met with was not helpful. She did not seem interested in speaking with me. When I asked for a quote, she asked if I had looked at it online. The second time I went to test drive they had me wait an hour and a half. When they brought me the car to test drive the sales person said it had a few lights on, like the tire pressure light, but should be fine to drive. When I got in the car I had never seen so many lights on in a car including a warning that the breaks needed to be checked. When going back inside I said I was not comfortable, and he suggested that when I come back it should be during the work day when they are not as busy. Overall terrible experience read more

Decent sales experience (good price but getting the paperwork finished took a couple hours longer than it should've) but great service. I've been to CarMax service twice to deal with warranty issues on my sedan. Both times, I had an exceptional experience. Worked with Miguel: he was professional, communicative, and efficient. After having come from Auto World nearby only to find out that the 335d that I was interested in was sold I went here next as they are the used car superstore - if they didn't have this rare BMW nobody would. Only because I've got a friend obsessed with cars I found myself behind the wheel of a shiny new 335d back in 2009. It was something I got dragged into - this event at Peter Pan BMW charity event and ever since - I've wanted to get this car. With cars it is well known you can only have two out of three of the following: cheap, reliable, and fun. I really believe with the 335d you can have it all now that they are a few years old. Nothing is more reliable or has better longevity than a diesel, fun is the crazy torque and obscene horsepower in such a light car, and its even cheap - a 2009 not only already got hit by depreciation - these cars still get 36 mpg. Has it been 7 years since this test drive? Did I not wait long enough? I think so... don't have to pay the $45K sticker price anymore... I walked in and a very helpful guy at the front center counter quickly found exactly what I wanted in lightening speed. These cars get sold so fast - I have to pull the trigger fast so another doesn't slip away.... Luckily they have great ways to reserve and hold and even ship ones from nearby for free. What I can also say is that the guys working for Carmax are car enthusiasts more than they are salesmen. No nonsense, no suits and ties. They know every detail about cars. From the smallest photo they can immediately tell you about whether or not a given car has heated and cooled seats by the tiny dot on a photo. The guy who helped me knew the differences in the slightly newer BMW with the smaller diesel engine and was able to advise me a bit. Same thing with the Lexus ES we briefly touched upon as an option that fulfilled all my wants and needs on my wish list. He immediately acknowledged the big elephant in the room when it came to the ES: how Toyota, without fanfare, switched from the Camry size to the Avalon size in 2013. One other feature so unique to Carmax is the ability to search so easily and fast by feature. Lets say you want cooled seats, a panoramic sunroof and a diesel engine. You will find it.... and a jeep is also on my radar. Most people probably care most about low miles and low price and decent mpg - easy to search by those criteria also and you will likely get a Sonota or Corolla in your search results. Willing to spend more? Camy or Accord may work. After searching endless hours that is the disorganized mess called Craigslist I appreciate what they have done here. The staff here really helps you figure out what you want. Patient and informative. Still in the process but so far so good. Avoid new car depreciation... huge selection of cars that have been reconditioned with no haggle pricing.... this looks like a winner. The biggest problem here is what to choose - they have it all. And there is no carssalesman who corners you and wont let you leave until you agree to take the one he has been wanting to desperately unload. read more

Absolutely worst transaction experience ever. I sell cars all the time through CarMax in Fremont but the "manager" Savannah Rubio at this location is the most unprofessional and entitled person that I've ever dealt with. She sits on her mobile phone all day while she makes customers wait for literally half a day. I came into sell my car around around 3pm which is registered under my company name (mind you, I already went through the appraisal process and just needed to sell the truck). She told me the process would take about 30-45min, which was reasonable. I asked her if she could start the process and if I can come back later to sign the papers. She said that they closed at 7pm (which I found out later it was 9pm) and if I did that then they would have to restart the process if I couldn't make it by 7pm. I began to explain to her that I had to get back work within the next hour but I could come back later to sign but she insisted that I just "sit and wait, it will only be around 30 minutes". So I did... After running the paperwork, she had her coworker ask me to produce documents proving that I was the owner of the company which I provided my operating agreement digitally through Legalzoom.com. She said that she couldn't find my name with the Secretary of State, I told her "well that's because I have a registered agent that receives all of my correspondence" . She said that the official online operating agreement wouldn't work and that she needed a printed copy which I sent to her email to print... She took an hour to print it... smh... She then proceeded to tell me that she wanted a letter head with my name on it. For those that don't know, a letterhead could be produced by anyone. That's not an official document... I provided one anyhow. By the time we got past all of this, all of her co workers took a break. After realizing that I've been sitting there for an obscene amount of time, I got up to walk around to look for Savannah. I found her in the back of the reception area scrolling through her mobile phone laughing... I got her attention and asked her how much longer this would take then she proceeded to tell me "please have a seat and wait". Keep in mind, I've already been here for over 3 hours!! Wtf?!? After sitting and waiting for about another 10-15min, a nice young gentleman by the name of Shay came out to help me. I expressed my frustration about the wait and the way that Savannah just disregarded me as a customer. Shay was a breath of fresh air, he completely understood my situation and said that he felt bad because he seen me sitting there for an unusual amount of time. Once Shay took over my file, he had me up and out of there within 30min. So hats off to that young man but Savannah Rubio needs a reality check. You clearly have a "power trip" disorder and at the rate that you're performing in and outside of work, I see DMV employment being in your future. Anyone who's unfortunate enough to deal with you at CarMax Pleasanton, I'm sure will agree. Needless to say, after getting the appraisal done the whole car selling process took close to 4 hours. Savannah got me out of there by 7pm, just like she wanted. I feel like that was intentional and she got a a little humor out of watching me wait there.
