I've had to buy a few cars in my life and the one thing I hate about buying a car is the haggling. So of course I targeted my search for a new car on Carmax, after hearing that "No haggling" is part of their motto.
I did my research and started off at the Burbank lot. Ralph helped me and he gave me room to browse and never once made me feel like I was being forced to walk away with a car. Although they had tons of cars on the lot, I never found the one I wanted, so I moved on.
A few days later I went to the Carmax near LAX after work. The salesman who worked with me tried to be helpful, but his persistence stank of desperation. He tried too hard to nail the sale and ended up losing me when he stopped listening to me.
That same night I went to the Carmax in Torrance. Quelle difference! I met Wesley Davis at the door and he showed me the lot, then backed off. That night we test drove a couple of cars, a 2003 Toyota Echo and a 2005 Kia Rio, both of which cost the same.
As we drove, I explained that I wanted a trouble free car. He was frank as he told me that if I wanted reliability, I couldn't go wrong with Toyota. Before I tried the Kia, he pointed out all the things that I was going to have issues with. He was right.
Then I told him about how my favorite car was my Chrysler Sebring convertible, but I couldn't possibly buy another one because of all the problems. We had a good laugh about how their transmissions crap out on an annual basis and he said he wished they'd stop making them because they are more trouble than they are worth.
I asked him why he was being so honest and he said that he didn't just want this sale, but he wanted to sell me my next 5 cars and he wanted to sell cars to my friends and family.
The dealer was going to close in an hour, so I asked him if we could finish the next morning. Instead of freaking out and trying to protect his precious sale, he was cool and said he'd be in at 10am. Unbelievable!
The next day I showed up at noon and before the paperwork was finished, I told him I had to return the rental car I was driving to the Hertz down the street before 1pm. Without hesitating, he grabbed the keys to a Mini Cooper and said he'd follow me to the Hertz and drive me back. Amazed, I asked, "You'd do that?" He said, "I'm your agent!"
As we drove back to the dealer, he showed me how the transmission on the Mini Cooper was acting wonky and lurching forward so he had to take this car off the lot to get it fixed. I asked him if his boss was going to get mad that they had to repair it instead of selling it. He said he couldn't let someone else drive away in the car the way it is. Besides, it was still under warranty so it was the automaker's problem.
When we got back, I signed papers and the car was ready within a half hour. I can't believe I'm saying this, but he actually made buying a car fast and fun.
I hate the idea of buying a used car. As my father says, "Buying a used car is the same as buying someone else's problems." Working with Wesley, I felt much more confident about my purchase. I didn't feel like I was being hustled into making a decision that I would later regret, because the guy who sold me the car had more integrity than any car seller should. Thank you so much Wesley! You've got my next 5 purchases. read more
