We only stopped in for a light snack as we were heading to the airport from our cruise. We got meatballs and cheese sticks appetizers. They were incredible... even the meatballs. The first stop on my self‑directed food and drink tour in Ybor was Carmine's, where we settled in at the bar for their well‑known "Deviled Crab" and a drink. Each of us ordered one of the crab balls, and they paired nicely with something cold to sip. I started with the evening's special, a margarita. It was a strong, well‑balanced pour, mixed cleanly and served with salt on just half the rim. They offer sugar as well. More places should do the half‑rim approach since it lets you choose each sip, with or without. It was genuinely delicious. The crab ball followed. Shaped almost like an ostrich egg, it was essentially a large crab cake packed with seasoned crab meat and a bit of filler, rolled in bread crumbs and fried until crisp. It was flavorful on its own but even better with a touch of hot sauce to brighten it up. I could have easily eaten three. Nick took great care of us at the bar. Wow, this is my newest obsession. Located right in Historic Ybor, the ambiance is perfect whether you want a nice lunch or on a date night. The food is always great. They Cuban Sandwich is worth it, although we order our own entrees we always split a Cuban sandwich. The Cuban Italian fusion is absolutely fantastic. Christmas Work Lunch at Carmine's! What a glorious feast among coworkers. Grateful they had an opening for lunch for a huge party. We made reservations without a hitch. We got a closed off section so we could be apart from the diners. We all ordered Appetizers. We got 5 Deviled Crabs, which we all split in half, as they are huge. We got mozzarella fritti, cheese sticks, which we shared as well. They went as soon as they were placed on table. I wish we gotten the calamari but perhaps next time. I do hear it's just as awesome. Appetizers were delish! We all ordered our meals, some got sandwiches and fries. Some got meals with salad and others got the baked chicken (which I hear is amazing). I got the Italian salad and the chicken parmigiana and it was ahh-mazing. Our waiter, forgive me I never got his name, was patient, friendly and very quick to fill our glasses. We ordered the crab 10 minutes before the sandwiches but our server brought both at the same time. There was no apology. We didn't enjoy any of the food. The crab was bland, my sandwich was bland and my husband's Cuban was so poor tasting it would make you hate Cuban sandwiches in general. The sandwiches are huge and didn't come with a side. Takeout lasagna for lunch. This dish is HEAVY. Super cheesy and oily, but if this is the mood you're in for that super satisfying hearty and filling cheesy comfort food, this will absolutely hit. I came for lunch with a group of coworkers who could not stop raving about how great this place was. We started with the crab deviled egg. I thought it was okay but a bit dry. On the other hand, the tuna appetizer was fresh and tasty, definitely a highlight. The calamari was also good. I ordered the Palomilla steak. The steak had good flavor but was slightly overcooked but adding the onions and parsley really helped elevate it. Service was friendly and welcoming, but a bit on the slow side. We stopped for lunch and were one of the first patrons so we got a nice window seat. Our server was quick to take our drink order and I like that they give you a pitcher of iced tea for your table. The menu has a nice variety of apps, salads, sandwiches and meals. My lunch was going to be my dinner, so I went for a baked rigatoni, which came with a choice of a side salad and I chose Caesar. The salad was a nice size and had a good flavor. The rigatoni came out very quick and was steaming hot. The sauce was good and there was plenty of cheese, so overall it was a good meal. This place is honestly the best place for a devil crab in Tampa Bay Florida area. The food is always on point especially the shrimp Eugene, which is my absolute fave dish. They also have a really great happy hour with six dollar margaritas and trust they don't play. The service is always great well. If you are from the Northeast and the name Carmine's (the NYC classic) makes you think this will be quality Italian, keep searching. We went and the food was lower than average at best. The meatball appetizer was decent but calamari VERY chewy. My husband got the lasagna and said it had no taste. I got the ybor salad and it's a knock off of the Columbia salad, but not nearly as good. My son got the pork sandwich and didn't like it. This is a casual sports bar vibe with a combo menu that I hoped would be good. Oh - and our waiter was slow AF and it was a slow Sunday night. Our waitress was pleasant and took our drink and lunch orders of two deviled crabs, a Tampa Cuban, a Cuban roast pork sandwich, a side of rice and black beans, a Washington Apple cocktail with no sours, an Arnold Palmer and a soft drink. Drinks came out fast, positive comments about the cocktail. Lunch came out in pieces the soup and 1 deviled crab, then a wait, then the 2 sandwiches and a wait, and the second deviled crab and side of black beans and yellow rice never came out. After the sandwiches the waitress asked if everything had arrived - all hadn't but she said she'd check -but never came back with the missing items. It was a really great experience and our bartender, whose name we failed to catch, was very nice and made excellent drinks. the Cuban sandwich was surprisingly so good. Cubans are so hit or miss for me and this HITTT. Great roast pork and I recommend getting it extra pressed. Fries were yummy! then we had to try their Deviled Crabs (which honestly it's more of a Scotch Egg but crab instead of egg and sausage) and really happy we did. Unfortunately I can't say too much positive about the eponymous restaurant of Ybor. There's way better places in Tampa for Cuban and Italian food especially for the value. After a 20 minute wait, we were seated and greeted by server who didn't really exude a desire to be here. But we'll get past that because it's a tough job dealing with people. The ginger ale ordered was flat and lacked any zing to start, but the server said they'd check with the manager. But really the Cuban Roast Pork was flavorless. Surely the kitchen can try making a roast pork equally as good as some hole-in-the-wall or cafeteria instead of going through the motions. Meat was dry and lackluster. The Cuban Sandwich was not pressed, not a hoagie as someone else reviewed, but rather a baked warmed sandwich with sliced meats on Cuban bread without flavor. Faedo, Spain Restaurant, West Tampa Sandwich are just some that make a great sandwich at lesser prices. Definitely more of a place for tourists who don't know any better.
