Confession: I'm a huge fan of Illuminations' Minion franchise + I'm a sucker for experiential pop-ups. So we decided to indulge in some greasy burgers, fries, and chili dogs at Carney's on Sunset. We arrived close to opening time and avoided the crazy lunch rush. Ordering was pretty simple, but somehow things got a bit screwy. Must've been some Minions in the kitchen to blame for the order shenanigans. Our food came out separately so the three of us didn't get to eat at the same time. Also, our order wasn't quite right so they had to remake it. Despite the food snafu, the turkey Carney's chili dog was tasty. However, I'm not so sure it was turkey per my order. The dog could've had more onions on top and the tomatoes would've been better diced, but it's classic Carney's food so we went with it. My kiddo loved his cheeseburger and the fries were OK. I used to work just up the street from Carney's and it was our go-to lunch stop before payday when our budget was tight. Back before Covid, it was a decent lunch for under $10. It's still pretty OK priced for the times and the food is filling--with or without the Minions for the backdrop. I remember the sticky tables even back then. Well, some things never change. The menu featured their standard Chocolate-dipped BANANA for the Minions. However, it would've been nice to see a more customized menu and some of the thematic decor on the inside. I guess I'll just settle for the mixup in our order as part of our special experience.

We went for the minions experience and had a great lunch. Classic chili dog with onions and chili fries. Everything made to order and ready quickly. Portion of chili was generous. Everything was delicious! We sat inside and enjoyed the photos on the wall and the diner type experience. We found street parking but they have their own private lot, which is a plus for the location.

Lunch in a train car!!! First time going to Carney's, but not the last time. There are a good number of tables, even if it is packed, it seems like tables open up all of the time. And with a great, elevated view of Sunset. There is parking, some of the spots are a bit tight, but there are a good amount of spots. There is a lot of history on the walls, definitely a classic restaurant. And restrooms you do not need a code for. If the door is locked, someone is in there. The restaurant is clean and full of character. The menu is small, but well thought out with dogs and sausages, as well as burgers, salads and wraps. I have been wanting a thick burger for a while, everything seems to be a smash burgers right now.... This hit the spot. Thick and juicy quality meat and not over cooked. I got the half pound burger, med rare. With a New York style turkey dog for my partner. Split the train wreck fires and we were stuffed. The burger was well cooked, not dry at all. Very substantial. The turkey dog does take a bit longer to cook, but was told that it was worth it. It was cooked well and was full of flavor. The fries are really good and are very messy, better than the competitions

Iconic stop on the Sunset strip where you literally eat in a railroad train car! The service is quick and efficient, they've had their system down since 1975. You feel like you've traveled back in time and order from a traditional kitchen window. The chili was delicious and there were options like turkey dogs, and half n half fries when you just can't decide what to choose. A fun lunch for a Hollywood day, I highly recommend hanging out and enjoying a piece of LA history. Not to mention there is parking... unheard of in the city!

Ya gotta love Carney's. Ya just gotta. A train car loitering on a curve of the Sunset Strip, dishing up Chili Cheeseburgers and Fries like heart disease is still undiscovered. The harshness of the fluorescent lights against the white walls, the aromatic steam rising up from the grill packed with burgers and chicken and onions, the cashier who sends soda cup lids gliding through the air from one hand to his other like a Frisbee hanging on the breeze. It's the epitome of L.A. fast food heaven, with a broader, more varied menu than the other similar places around town, and I've always liked it more than Tommy's. At first glance, the thin burger patties and chili seem interchangeable with that other venerable burger stop, but I think the quality is better at Carney's. Yes, the meat tastes better. The chili also appears very similar, but is actually not as greasy (aka easier on the tummy). Fries are definitely better: thin shoestrings cooked to order and served hot out of the fryer naked, letting you add as much or as little salt as you like. Though I also like chili fries, I order my chili on the side, so it's a neater, one dip at a time affair, which also keeps the fries crispier for longer. Tonight, as always, I ordered a Cheeseburger with just Chili. My wife, however, orders hers exactly as advertised, with chili, mustard, tomato and pickles. Both were hot off the grill, tasty and satisfying. Our order of fries was, indeed, quite crispy and piping hot, our side of chili at the ready for dipping. I also like to grab a few banana peppers, bite off the ends, and sprinkle the juice onto the burger for a little extra heat. Try it next time! And so, it was a good, old-fashioned L.A. dinner for a Thursday night, filled with flavor and classic comfort. Whether on the Strip or on Ventura Blvd., you can't go wrong when you stop for a meal at the train.

I knew I would be in West Hollywood and was researching places that seemed like a good meal. I came across Carneys, serving burgers and hotdogs, but the Chili and the ambiance, décor of the restaurant being a train car is what sucked me in. I ordered a chili cheese burger and chili cheese fries. Chili Cheese burger consisted of a lightly toasted bun, patty with cheese, topped with chili, pickles, onion. Solid burger. Chili Cheese Fries: fries were the cut similar to McDonalds, not too thin, not too thick, fried to a golden brown, not soggy, topped with chili and cheese. The Chili is the star. Nice and thick. Not runny. Full of flavor. Great meal. Ordering was easy, very great service

Ahh this place I think catches the attention of anyone that passes by. It has such a cute and instagramable entrance. All the minions monsters and train stop set up is so creative and I feel it makes whatever you eat here taste better. In terms of food they have a menu you can find anywhere really. The food is good, I would say you come here more for the experience of eating inside an animated train. I love how the eyes outside move every once in a while. I give it to them for the great set up. they went all out!

I found out this place had a minion theme but by the time we got there it was all taken down so I was most excited about that! But this place is such a cute spot to go to! It's literally a train cart, I am kinda scared of heights so you are a little up in the air lol. They were quick to take my order and I felt like they already know what you want, the guy was writing down everything as soon as I was talking. I was also wondering if they have combos I didn't see it but if someone could help me out thanks! I had to order my veggie burger "soy based patty" and then a side of fries and a drink separately I believe. My burger was super delicious if actually tasted like a grilled burger, the fries were crispy and delicious! If you guys are looking for a good burger this is the space to chill and just eat!

Honestly, this Carney's is a time capsule. I feel as if nothing has changed. I live closer to the Studio City location, but decided to come to Sunset. Loved the creaking wooden floor board, train car atmosphere, unchanged menu, friendly staff, cool floating lid flip, etc. I came for a Double Cheeseburger, which did not disappoint. So good. No ketchup. If you add ketchup to a burger, you obviously don't like burgers. I also ordered a Chicken Pasta Salad, because that was my to go order in the past. It tasted the same, just not nostalgic the same. High expectations, I suppose. All in all, wonderful restaurant.

We are always down for a good smash burger and this one here is definitely a top contender! The restaurant is a literal train. Inside was clean and service was quick. They are most famous for their chili cheeseburger and chilli cheese fries, which is what my husband ordered. I opt to go just a little lighter with a regular cheese burger and a side of fries. Everything is made to order and super hot and fresh. It's what a burger should be! On the side they have those little pepperoncinis and it's always a perfect pairing. They were more than generous with the chili on the fries, enough so that I was able to get a taste and some. This is easily a spot that I would add on my go to places when in the area.

Haven't been to Carneys since I was a little girl. I was feeling nostalgic and stopped by for a cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. Taste just how I remember with a slightly smaller burger patty. Service was A-1 and my food was ready quickly. Best of all parking was a breeze. Love that it's still a train car.

Visited Hollywood and had to stop by the iconic Carney's. Awesome place... Ordered the chili fries and a double cheeseburger. I'd put their chili fries up against any other and they would win! Menu is simple but they do it well. Overall great place from the food to the rich history and atmosphere.

Yes. You gotta eat here! It's very "Golden Arches esque"! We were in a rush to eat today so we stopped by here. It was on the strip and had free parking! We opted for double cheeseburgers and fries. They were amazing! Fresh, juicy and tasty. The one thing we noticed was that everything, and we mean EVERYTHING tastes exactly like it came from a McDonald's kitchen. Burgers and fries! We started to wonder if the owner used to work for them back in the day. The place was nice and clean and overlooked sunset strip. Parking was free which is always a huge plus. Service was fast and friendly. Definitely recommend! Maybe also send me an invite if you plan on heading here :) read more

Sorry I know this spot is iconic as far as the cool train eatery experience and I love that and I have been eating here since 97' but it's not the same! The chicken sandwich was really gross like frozen chicken with NO SEASONING the fries were old & dark with old oil and I know I know many are you gonna say well they aren't known for grilled Chicken, but their CHILI and you are right but even that sucked...But I used to love their entire menu... I don't know what it is but it's obvious something has changed in the kitchen. :((( sorry carney's but it's RIP For us! read more

This is an old reliable stand-by. I had the red-eye New York which is a somewhat spicy Grilled Polish Sausage with grilled sauerkraut. While it was a decent enough dog, the best art of this Carney's is the people watching. Business execs, tourists, the homeless, wannabee actors, oncewas actors, and the general fring element all share space and chow down here. This might be a 4-star place, but I am knocking them down one because they charge for drink refills. read more

Did anybody else get crazy excited like Big Bang Theory's Sheldon would for eating on a train car? It's a cute concept but I didn't have high expectations going into this establishment. We came here since we were already nearby and my friend was craving a hotdog. I remember as an undergrad at UCLA I had always meant to come here but never actually went. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean it was inside and the food. My friend had the red eye carney dog with chili fries and she was satisfied with the flavors. I had the Asian chicken salad with dressing on the side (it seemed the most macro-friendly from the menu). The chicken was surprisingly good - not greasy at all. The lettuce tasted fresh and they give you a good balance of carrots and wontons. The dressing was light and I didn't even need much of it to flavor my meal. The staff was friendly. There is free parking available. And it isn't crowded if you beat the lunch rush or stop by after the lunch rush leaves. read more

chili was not bad not bad at all and I was pretty surprised when I saw the prices on the menu being that this place is on a strip of road where everything quite overpriced. I would be back if I find myself up at the Key Club for one of the many concerts I go too and have a hankering for a hot dog afterwards late at night, this place would be one of those places that pops up when I want a quick bite to eat and that is close by. read more

Cheeseburger, chili fries and a soft drink. :) I ))LOVE(( that Carney's is open late! FREE parking, but ***NOTE*** the parking lot has a guard that will call the tow truck out if you've abused the parking situation. My friend and I were there for dinner not long ago, and a group of young 20 somethings walked through the restaurant, passed the counter and headed for the restrooms. After they played around the restaurant area, the guard was not far behind, figuring out that they didn't intend on staying, eating or making a purchase of any kind. LOL, So for the record.... Carney's is not a parking lot for club parking! I've been to Carney's when the line has been long, but the staff really does a great job to hustle out the hot food and get your order right. I've never had any customer issues or complaints. All good experiences here. :) read more

Excellent food. Speedy service. Polite and friendly staff. This place is one of my faves. I'm low-key glad that it's underrated so I don't have to stand in line for long BUT they would be well worth the wait! This is, by far, the best place to get a hot dog from in L.A. I'm from Chicago, and I haven't found anyplace that compares to our hot dogs yet except Carney's. We went for the first time after being out here for 4 years the other night, and I'm so glad we did. We'll for sure be back to try more! read more

Chili overload. This is a most eat place if your in the area. The food comes quick and it comes out hot and fresh. I ordered the double cheese burger with chili cheese fries. The food was delicious and filling. The parking is ample in the back but I came at 4pm so I didn't experience the dinner rush on a Friday night. The indoor seating and bathroom is big man friendly. But if your tall just watch your head, there's no jumping around in the train unless you want a concussion. Lol! read more

I give Carney's 5 stars because every time I come here I see & meet somebody famous. I live 100 miles away but come here whenever I am in town. The food is great, the service is top notch & very pleasant, and this place is affordable even for families. I started coming here in the late 90's and now have my "children" driving here from out of town with their friends. I have never had a bad experience here. I love this place! Do yourself a favor and stop in. Don't forget to have a lemonade, it's the best around. I always get the chili dog and fries but I have tried other things on the menu. It's all good here. read more

Not so good. Expected lots more based on the reviews. Visiting from the East Coast. Used Yelp to find someplace open late and funky. Place is funky being a train. Plenty of parking (which is good that part of LA). Inside was nothing special. Plain tables. Wooden chairs. People working there were REALLY nice. Enough to make you want to go back. Almost. Food just is crappy diner food. Chile dog is not good. I each a lot of chile dogs and these were not special. Very hard casing that would "crack" on each bite. Very unnerving for my wife. Chile could have been out of a can. Burgers not very notable. Pile up with stuff but patties are thin-ish and looked kind of greasy. Dessert was a "Bunny" ice cream bar on a stick. Not even a real Eskimo Pie as advertised on menu. I would not go back. I wanted to like the place. Could not. Rather go to the iHop if stuck late at night. 1 star for food. 3-4 stars for people. Been coming to LA for years and always wanted to try this place! the giant train is awesome.. Polite guy behind the bar took my order and I headed to the bathroom. I must say I was honestly shocked to see it was clean and smelled it! Great first impression! You can tell a good place by the way they take care of their facilities. I had THE Carney Dog AND Train Wreck fries. Both were good. Cant put my finger on it but Something was missing on the taste...just maybe a little bland...not sure. But overall the place was great. Friendly employees, good food, great view. I have to come back to update my review. read more

Been coming here since birth...tradition. Tried the chicken apple sausage for the 1st time as I usually get the chili fries or dog. It was very tasty in part to the pineapple slaw that give the right crunch and sweetness to offset the slightly salty sausage. So why not 5 stars? Restrooms and parking are not ideal read more

What a fun place! But it seems that locals equate fun with yummy. We don't. Got a "Carney" dog. Generous toppings but the hot dog was dried out, nearly hard and thin. I expected a robust hot dog for $7. I'll take Sonic over this! Sweet potato fries were very good French fries were skinny fries so if you like those... drinks got mixed up and it was $25 for two people. 2 dogs, 2 fries, 2 drinks. Yikes read more

Was a little disappointed with this place unfortunately, everything was very basic and bland. I ordered my burger with chili and it came out without chili, so that was a bad start for the meal. The burger could have been a lot better with the chili I think. The cheese fries were also pretty bland, they were lacking salt. Im going to give the, another shot, and this time I'll order better. I'll update my review upon trying it with the chili. read more

Great chili! Went here randomly on a late night grub mission. I called in to personally get a feel of the staff and their opinions, and the Associate name Joseph insisted we come by and try them out. Well apparently Joseph was right about that 40 year old chili recipe, because it was delicious! We got the chili cheese dog, chili fries, a spicy tuna sandwich and fresh lemonade to top it off. They even have really tasty, fresh baked cookies at the counter for purchase. Thanks Carney's for the late night grub, the chili hit the spot! read more

Carney's is a family owned business that prides itself on serving some of the best hamburgers and hot dogs in LA, and probably the world. For over 40 years we have stayed true to what has made us the best: we use the freshest ingredients on the market and have never skimped on quality.

History

Established in 1981.

Carney's was founded in 1975 by John Wolfe, Sr. and his wife Pat Wolfe. Together they worked countless hours building the restaurant into a Sunset Strip destination. In a time when hamburger establishments were popping up all over the place, John chose to build a restaurant out of an old Pacific Railroad passenger train. Being a former radio executive, he understood the importance of lasting impressions and being different. Not only was John good at publicity but he could also cook amazing burgers and hot dogs. John knew that by building a portable restaurant that if anything were to happened to their Sunset Strip lease, they could simply pick up and move their business elsewhere. Needless to say, the business is still around today and has become quite the LA Landmark. In 1981 Carney's decided to add another location on Ventura Blvd in Studio City.

We visited during the final game of the World Cup, so there was no more indoor dining, but there's a couple bench tables outside at the side of the building. Part of the building shades over the seating, so even on a pretty hot day, this worked in a pinch and there was a slight breeze too, thank goodness. Staff was helpful and and answered our questions. They also brought our order out to the tables outside, which was nice. They also took our trash and tray back when we were done too. Each table has ketchup, brown and spicy mustard if need be. Inside, you order and pay at the cashier, grab a number, and they bring it to you. There's a bunch of sausage links on display, as well as the sodas and you can see some of the beer that they have too. For our Sunday lunch, we got the: 1) Sunset Zero soda: -It's an imported German soda. Love that there's a zero sugar version. It's a citrus cola with ending vanilla notes. Way better than some of the orange Pepsi/Pepsi Fire they ran in the past. Nice to try. 2) Rattlesnake & Rabbit with Jalapeno Peppers: -Unique combination of predator and prey meats all encased into one sausage. Also, not often you can get these meats as well. -Slight spicy kick to it from the jalapenos and rich, buttery texture of the meats together. -Each hot dog comes with 2 toppings and we got caramelized onions and sauerkraut with this which added a nice sour and sweet taste to it too. -I liked this the most of the 2 of them. 3) Pheasant with Herbs de Provence: -Nice savory flavor, but I was a fool and ordered this with the sweet and spicy peppers as a topping since they were different from the other toppings we got and I mostly just tasted the bitter aftertaste of the peppers that sort of overpowered the meats. My mistake if anything since the bites with just meat and mustard were delicious. 4) Groot of Belgian Fries: -Huge serving, way too much for 2 people especially with 2 hot dogs and we sadly could not finish it, but at the very least it came with 2 dipping sauces. -Before ordering this, I didn't groot referred to anything other than a Marvel character. -Fries had a rich, deeper flavor than standard fries, nice slight crispiness. We got it with curry ketchup and sundried tomato mayo. The tomato mayo was fine, definitely a lighter flavor and since the fries tasted so rich on their own, I feel like the curry ketchup was a more flavorful and better match. A lot of the hot dog vendors have their PayPal/Venmo QR codes taped onto their cart. You can't tell the difference between the TJ dogs sold here and the ones in Tijuana. I've personally never gotten sick after eating these. Service is quick, there may be a bit of a language barrier, but not enough to prevent your purchase of a hot tasty TJ dog.

The Good: the food here is actually pretty good. The Bad: My primary concern is the practice of stacking open paper boxes containing food along the main counter, directly in front of customers. This method of food preparation presents serious hygiene risks. It leaves food exposed to anyone passing by, allowing customers to easily look into, breathe on, or even unintentionally touch meals that aren't theirs. When I see that train car I instantly get hungry! Doesn't matter what location you go to, Carney's is the bomb! I usually go with a chili dog but their burgers are just as dank! You hear a lot of people talk about Pink's or other hot dog shops but I would take a dog from Carney's over any others, any day! Don't want a hot dog? Put that chili on a burger! There's nothing in this world better than a huge burger with hot, fresh chili smothered all over it! Their fries are another reason why I love Carney's so much, same with their desserts! As I said, I always go with a chili dog but my dessert varies when I come (and yes, I always get dessert), some days it's an ice cream bar, a few cookies, strawberry bar or best yet.. a large chocolate dipped banana! This place is a total vibe! Picture this - riding a train on Sunset Blvd, chowing down on a burger, hot dog, fries, and sipping on a cold beer. And here's the kicker - the restaurant is literally a train car on train tracks. How cool is that? You dig! The food is surprisingly good; I was pleasantly surprised. We took my son there before an event, and he absolutely loved it. The whole setup is nice, and the view of Sunset Blvd through the train window adds a unique touch. The customer service is kind and adds to the overall positive experience. I recommend trying the Double Cheeseburger and Chili Fries, and definitely go for the Carney's Hot Dog. Love this place! The best thing about this place is the location and free parking when you can find a spot. This has to be the best place to get a late night spot after you have gotten seriously enebriated at one of the local spots. I walk here with my friends after I have a couple of drinks at Saddle Ranch and Pink Tacos. Great spot to hang out after a couple of drinks with the guys, definitely not a place to take a date. Carney's is my favorite train restaurant in the city. Not only that but the hot dogs and burgers here are probably also the best in the city. It is so fun to come and eat here as well. The chili hot dogs are so delicious. The chili tastes like it is freshly made and everyone in my family loves it. There is absolutely no hot or spicy flavor at all. The hamburgers here are also good. They are always made to order fresh. I'd recommend ordering french fries as they are also quite good here as well. What makes it the best is that all of this takes place inside a classic train cabin. Carney's really gets it right for a solid burger spot. The burger was juicy, messy in the best way, and just straight-up good without doing too much. It's set inside an iconic train car diner, which gives it that classic, slightly nostalgic vibe without feeling staged. Super chill atmosphere, quick flow, and the workers were friendly and efficient even when it was busy. And if you go, get the large chili -- especially if you're sharing. I recently had the pleasure of trying the cheeseburger and chili cheese fries at this spot and let me tell you, it was absolutely fantastic. The cheeseburger was perfectly cooked and juicy, with the cheese melting just right, and the chili cheese fries were loaded with flavor and had just the right amount of kick. And to top it off, I indulged in an amazing chocolate chip cookie that was the perfect sweet ending to my meal. I've been here once before and took another visit this time around in Carney's Restaurant. The outside of the train car has changed which I think is a shame as I feel it looked better before but the food us just as good. The lady taking our order could not understand us at all and ended up serving us 2 hot-dogs each when we only ordered one. My husband paid whilst I was in the loo and didn't recognize it was well over what two hot-dogs should have been. I hope this was a genuine mistake and not a scam for tourists. Got 2 carney dogs, a large train wreck fries and 2 drinks all for 18 bucks. Dirt cheap! The carney dog is your typical chili dog, I still prefer Tommy's over it but Carney's is better than Pink's IMO. The train wreck fries though..so good!! It's basically fries with grilled onions, cheese and thousand island dressing. The place (the train LOL) is small inside but they have outdoor seating to accommodate more people. The guys behind the counter are also really friendly too. Cheap food + train wreck fries + great service + free parking in Hollywood = 4 stars! read more

always passed this place when I was younger and found it to be so fascinating I couldn't wait to try it out. well after many many anticipated years I finally went. and...... I was disappointed with the food.. the place itself was awesome, how many times can you say you ate in a train. Not many. so that aspect is pretty cool. But their chili burgers are OK (tommys chili kills them hands down) and their fries are blah! wont be back. Tried it. Love the place itself but the quality of food is slacking and if it wasn't before they need to fix that ASAP! read more

An iconic restaurant that is made out of an old train caboose, that serves hotdogs and hamburgers. There is not too much else. The fanciest that this place gets is adding ketchup to an item. The corn dogs though are amazing. They are not the microwave kind that mom makes, but the baked original kind that only come when the county fair is in town. For the type of food that I bought, the price was not exactly what I wanted. It seemed to be a bit much for a hotdog. I probably would only go back there, if there were no other choices. read more

I am a hot dog lover, and I have eaten some great dogs around the country. If this is what the star's call their favorite, they haven't had a really good hot dog. It is fun to set in a train car, and the burgers looked better than the hot dogs, but can't say I would eat a dog there again. My husband got a chili dog, and I am not sure what it was....but I have never seen chili like what was on his dog. Sorry Carney's...but not happy. Great for bringing the kids after school. I have been coming to Carney's for many years. The staff is always polite, friendly and helpful. The food is consistent and always tasty. The service is always fast, especially for a place that makes up each order when it is placed. We get hot dogs or burgers with chile. I like the big chunky slice of tomatoe. Their fries, either the standard french fries or sweet potato fries are always cooked perfectly. When we pick up "togo" I always get the chile in a styrofoam cup on the side, and I portion it out when we get home. read more

I love this place so much. I actually didn't expect to like it so much, but I was wrong. The juiciness of the burger is absolutely phenomenal and the french fries were the right amount if crispy, crunchy, salty, softness, everything was perfect. The service was great, the staff was nice. The location could be a bit better I guess, but it is not horrible. The melted cheese on the burger really made the burger what it is, and I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. read more

Went here with once with my sister walking on our way to someplace and stopped in for a hot dog and it was so good. Went again not to long ago with the boyfriend and it was even better. I love the trolly where you order and can eat inside but I prefer to eat outside on the outside patio and people watch. I had the spicy polish and WOO it was spicy, but so good. We split the chili fries which were great and my boyfriend got something with red cabbage on it and it was amazing. read more

I went here for the first time today to grab a quick bite to eat with friends and I gotta say this is one of best chili cheese hot dogs I've tasted in a long time. I had the chili cheese dog with onions and tomato slices which worked well for me. The chili cheese dog didn't leave me feeling heavy or bloated afterwords. The inside of Carney's is an old fashion train setting which fits very well with the food. Service is quick too. Delicious quick food! Great service. read more

One of the best classic chili burgers and chili dogs in Los Angeles! I have been coming to Carney's ever since they opened many many years ago, every single meal I have eaten at Carney's has been fantastic.
