This is an old historic restaurant that is supposed to be the best delicatessen in fort worth according to word of mouth and reviews. I recently went there to try out what everyone was talking about. I was excited to try this place since I am a big fan of deli restaurants and people were comparing the flavor of the meats like NY deli's. When you walk in the restaurant you can see all of the different meats and cheeses that they serve with other to go items along the front counter. Then you pretty much seat yourself wherever you can find a seat. Once seated the lady bring you a simple menu. Most of the items are typical deli items except for a couple of unique sandwiches of their own and several different sides. I ordered the king of all deli sandwiches, The Reuben. One with pastrami and one with corned beef and I expected it to be like every other Reuben in the world that I have tried. Once they arrived I noticed that the sandwich's were cold, I mentioned it to the waitress and she said that they just made it and that is they way they come. So I just took a deep breath and started eating it. The sandwich itself was okay nothing to go crazy over. There was to much sauerkraut and the flavor of the meat was just simple. The pastrami was extremely grisely and almost inedible. The sandwiches come with a pickle, onion and one side. I got the cold slaw and the macaroni salad which were okay. The cold slaw was simple and wasn't covered in mayo like others. The macaroni salad was way better then I expected with lots of flavor. Since I was disappointed from the sandwich I decided to pass on dessert even though I saw several people scarfing down their pies so it is possible that they are worth eating. Overall, I would never return to this restaurant. It is nothing out of this world or worth driving out to. The prices are fair and the restaurant is somewhat clean. If I were ever in the mood for a deli/Reuben sandwich I would rather take the time to go and get every individual ingredients and do it myself at home. If not, there are plenty of good deli restaurants in Dallas, for example Cindy's Deli, Deli News, or Zinsky's (might be closed). Today for lunch, we decided to try Carshon's. One of my first observations is that the atmosphere is terrible and in drastic need of an overhaul. I liked the nostalgic photos of old FW, but everything else just seemed tired. The next thing I noticed was the prices. $5.25 for a sandwich with no cheese, $6.95 for a specialty sandwich, and ~$1.25 for sides. You can find a better deal at Jason's (with chips or fruit and free muffins, and ice cream that's priced into their sandwiches). We ordered a corned beef & swiss, a Rebecca (pastrami, cream cheese, and smoked turkey with Russian dressing, and the Strawberry Delight dessert. The meats were really juicy, flavorful, and tender. The Russian dressing was fantastic. The cream cheese tasted fluffy and homemade. The Strawberry dessert had real strawberries, fluffy whipped cream, flavor packed pudding and flaky graham cracker topping. It also tasted homemade and was delicious. I've never had a real NY deli sandwich, so I can't really compare but this may be as close as it gets in Fort Worth. I wish the decor were better and I wish sides were included with a sandwich, but, overall, I think it's a good place for lunch in Fort Worth. read more

Without question Carshon's serves the best sandwich in Fort Worth. As other reviewers have noted - they do not take credit cards - so come prepared. It's a little hard to see from the road so its easy to pass it. The accoustics make the dining room loud but not enough to prevent conversation. Excellent service - quick, effeicient and friendly. The specialty sandwiches are superb. My favorite is the Rachel, it is corned beef and turkey with swiss cheese, cole slaw and russian dressing on grilled rye. Their experience shows as the ratio of each ingredient is absolutely perfect. And their desserts are worth the trip as well, the pie in particular. My friend kept telling me to try this place out when I was searching for a good Reuben sandwich. He couldn't recall the name of this place. A search on Yelp helped me find it. The Reuben sandwiches were every bit as good as he remembered. They were generously filled with corned beef. I asked for less cheese on mine and my friend asked for no cheese on his. We got what we asked for, however, we both would have liked a little more sauerkraut on the sandwich than what we got. I usually have to pause halfway through the sandwich to capture the magical moment, and thank the sandwich for all of the joy it is bringing me. Who knew Fort Worth had an authentic Jewish deli? Definitely check the hours of operation before you head over there. It's one of those places that seems to be closed more often than it's open. As for the food... I guess it depends on what you think of kosher style sandwiches. Personally, I love them. I ordered the Reuben with a side of potato salad. Great ingredients. Nice ratio of ingredients (I'm never that impressed when a deli piles 7 pounds of meat on a piece of bread and calls it a "sandwich"). Who ever mentioned the bread is spot-on. It's delicious and perfectly grilled. I think all of their signature sandwiches are safe bets, though. And the place has stellar desserts. Had it not been for Stephanie behind the counter making my sandwich and making up for the terrible greeting I received from the cashier, I would have given this place less than one star!! I had such high hopes for this place! Coming from Cali where we had legendary pastrami stands like Johnnie's Pastrami, I've yet to find anything that comes close here in Texas. I came across this place and decided to give them a try. Well it was like going back in time...they only accept cash and get this, checks! Yep, that's right...personal checks but not from everyone obviously because the elderly lady behind the counter failed to mention that to me but happily accepted a check from the other elderly white lady that checked out before me. Didn't really bother me too much because who in the hell carry around checks these days...not me. Thankfully I had enough cash on me to cover the bill. It smelled old in there and the sandwiches were wrapped in foil and taped closed with duct tape. Also, they did not have French rolls so I had to get my pastrami on egg bread instead which was pretty underwhelming. Wow...I am surprised I just now found out about this place. They have been making sandwiches for 84 years now. I tried the Ruthie ( roast beef, turkey, coleslaw and Russian dressing on grilled Egg Bread) it was delicious and huge. I also had the macaroni salad which was also very delicious. The pastrami is amazing and you can tell it's done with TLC. The rye is great with just enough grilling to get a little crunch and butter flavor. Swiss compliments sandwich perfectly. Carshon's has the best sandwich in Fort Worth in my opinion. If someone came to visit me in Fort Worth this is probably the first place I would take them for lunch. If the Rebecca at all looks good to you, get it. It will change you. The Rebecca is about 8 feet tall and has cream cheese. Every ingredient could stand alone and be delicious, especially the bread. We've heard good things about this place and have intended to come for awhile. Well, we made it today and should have just gone to McAlisters in Arlington. Two sandwiches took nearly half an hour to make it to our table. And then the order was wrong. The tomatoes were soft, mushy, and tasted spoiled in the pasta salad. Carshon's is a awesome deli... walk in on a cool day and the steamy smell of freshly sliced Pastrami, Corned Beef and other deli meats, fresh-baked pies, the matzo ball soup and all the other tantalizing aromas make it impossible to back out of the door and leave. You are without power to resist and will be drawn to the dining area. As you walk into the dining area, check out the whiteboard on the far wall and you'll see a list of pies that were baked fresh that day. They have everything from fruit pies, to coconut, chocolate and all the usual suspects, all done very well. Try the Rachel, my favorite, and you won't be disapointed. Turns out I have been driving past this place for years and never knew it. It's in a part of Fort Worth that's just coming back thanks to TCU's expansions. First you should know: this is a CASH ONLY establishment: I think they will accept a local check from a local diner too. I'm always suspicious about the motives of a very sccessful business that only takes cash. Ask me about it offline some day. So, while not a Kosher establishment, it is supposed to be a 'real' east-coast Deli. So I tried the classics. Bland soup in the Matzo Ball, no flavor at all to the broth, but the noodles and Matzo Ball were decent. It's hard to enjoy a bland broth soup though. For a sandwich I went for one the Rueben's siblings, the Rebecca (yes, they have the whole R family of sandwiches here): this one is pastrami and turkey with cream cheese on egg bread. It was delicious, not too big and not too small, and the bread was perfectly toasted. Prices are not cheap, but a good Deli is not anyway. Service was attentive. Parking is horrible. First off, some key tips worth repeating: 1. CASH ONLY people, so stop at an ATM 2. In reference to above, if you want pie (which everyone raves about) then bring at least $12 so you can cover your meal plus tip 3. Just simply egg and mayo/"salad dressing". Nice bread. Very affordable. I got the potato salad which I did not care for at all. Sadly did not have enough for the almost $4 piece of chocolate pie that EVERYONE ELSE was eating. So sad. I hope to go back and try it, and maybe then this will bump up to a 4. This is one of those places I failed to review due to it being an iconic landmark. That, and the atmosphere is rather bland. It is a true, old fashioned deli. The tables are covered in plastic coated table cloths and there is a chalk board on the wall that has desserts listed. But, don't put too much weight in "the writing on the wall" as it may not be accurate. We ran into that a few times. If you want some really great meat on a really good sandwich, you shall receive. Don't bother mulling over your choices, just start at the top of the "R" sandwich menu (Ruthie, Rachel, Rueben, etc.) and work your way down. You will be back for more... I promise. I just wish I had all the money they have lost in revenue due to not accepting credit cards! Heck, me and my lunch buddies alone would be a significant amount! Let me preface my review: My name is Brandon...and I have a Jewish Deli addiction. I've made pilgrimages to Katz's. I ugly-cried when I found out Carnegie Deli in NY was closing. If you're not sure where I am at any given moment , a good first place to check is the 11 City in Chicago, regardless of the fact that I live in Texas. I am a goy - a mentsh - your run of the mill Catholic white shlemiel. I don't keep Kosher, and probably have no business at a Jewish deli, but...L'chaim! Living in Fort Worth, Texas for the last 7 years, I hadn't really bothered looking for any good Jewish Delis, for the same reason I don't bother looking for a good place for deep-dish pizza. When I get a hankering, I often resort to making my own matzo ball soup at home, Manischewitz-style. Otherwise, I'm usually just hanging my head as I make my way through every delicious, Texas-sized portion of smoked meat...counting the days until my next trip up North. Alas, the stars were about to align...cue Carshon's! The Yelp reviews seemed somewhat promising. Folks were bothered that they didn't accept debit/credit card...OK, soooo do your homework before you go someplace new *check*. It was 11:15 on a Thursday morning and we walked in to the older, almost dive-ish ode-to-yesteryear. We sat down and were one of only two tables occupied in the place...Eeek, I was concerned! Rule #1: Never expect to enjoy any place that has a bunch of empty tables. My goodness, in a matter of 15 minutes, there *literally* (actual "literally," not "teenage girl literally") wasn't a single empty table in the entire place - PACKED house!!! I'm about to understand why... The waitress was such a sweetheart. Huge smile on her face, so polite and friendly, wishing every table that sat down a "Merry Christmas" (totally awesome, despite being slightly humorous at a Jewish Deli). I don't often carry cash, but had $27 in my wallet for some reason. As we perused the menu, I was doing some quick math - $27 for the two of us, including tax and tip. Taking it back to the early 2000's, it had been a while since I had to think about how much I was able to spend at a restaurant without having the comfort of knowing that I'll just use a card if I don't have enough cash *wipes brow*. I ordered a traditional half hot pastrimi on rye and a cup of matzo ball soup. My husband ordered the waitress' recommendation, the "Rebecca" sandwich, which was pastrami, turkey, cream cheese (huh?!), and russian dressing - a bit of everything thrown together on a triple stack of egg bread. My soup came out quickly and was blissfully satisfying. It was a traditional chicken soup with shredded chicken and vermicelli noodles, the matzo ball was large, cloud-soft, and delicious! Folks who know matzo balls have certain preferences. Some prefer floaters and some prefer sinkers - I'm a floater kinda guy, so this was perfect. When the sandwiches came, I quickly smeared mine with the fresh deli mustard that is placed on the table each morning to live throughout the day. I dove in and was instantly whisked away to a far away land...somewhere that actually has snow. The rye bread was masterfully toasted, the pastrami was packed full of flavor, the mustard added the perfect kick, the caraway seeds giving a little texture, with the most innocent drip of grease falling to the table. My husband took his first bite and I'm pretty sure I saw his eyes roll back in his head. After regaining the ability to speak, he sensually remarked "Oh. My. God. This is the best sandwich I've ever had." Needless to say, we rather enjoyed our experience. We will be back regularly to eat anything that isn't bolted down at Carshon's Jewish Deli in Fort Worth. I'm always the youngest customer when I go here - and beware the lunch rush. Come super early or super late.
