Came to Casa Rio on the recommendation of my girl's brother, who came here in the past. It's pretty easy to spot on the river walk and there's just a ton of seating. Even with that, you may still need to wait 20 or so mins, but at least they'll text you when the table is ready. We opted for the outdoor seating instead of indoors, which is definitely the preferred choice if you can. Casa Rio is a long time staple of San Antonio and I think I can get why that is. The food is fairly solid. Not the best, but also not the absolute worst. With that said, one oddity is knowing that chips and salsa did not come free of charge. That was weird. Even when we got them, they were kinda okay. Wasn't anything special, but it's chips & salsa. There are a few vegetarian options here. I ordered one of the few... the veggie enchiladas. I opted for the plate and it was a generous portion. It looks like the enchilada was made with a little bit of Santa Anna sauce.... I wish there was an option for verde. I also think it's a bit too cheesy, but I'm also being picky. I got the spicy margarita, which was a good choice to wash out the food. Came for dinner to meet a friend and as they were from out of town, they wanted some tex mex in the Riverwalk and choose this place. We ordered the chips with queso/guac/salsa, beef and chicken "fajita" and some other dishes. The queso/guac/salsa was pretty good, large portions and good price, especially for being on the riverwalk. But the fajitas were hands down the worst I've ever had. The menu says it comes sizzling, yet it came on a plate and not even hot. Lettuce/pico/guac/cream portions were tiny and the tortillas tasted store bought. The beef was tough and chicken cold. Wonderful lunch on the beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk with my daughter. We started with the Street Corn, which is served as an appetizer which comes with tortilla chips. Putting a spoon full of the corn onto the chip made for a delicious bite. The seasonings, cheese, fresh herbs, and jalapeños mixed with the roasted corn was full of flavors and textures that simply worked well together. Highly recommend! For entrees, my daughter got the chicken flautas plate and I got the Rio plate which came with a chicken flauta, a beef enchilada and a pork tamale. The tamale was the top item on my plate- the flavor of the masa was unlike any I've had anywhere else- absolutely delicious and perfectly complimented the well seasoned pork filling. I could have eaten a whole dozen of them myself. The beef enchilada was very good- the beef filling had a very good flavor and the sauce and perfectly melted cheese made for a damn tasty enchilada. Finally the flautas...while they were not bad, they did not meet the same level of flavoring as the fillings of the enchilada and the tamale, the flavor was slightly bland and a little on the dry side. Let's be honest: you eat at Casa Rio partly for the food and mostly for the Riverwalk cred. And it delivers on that. We sat right on the river (people-watching included) and ordered the chicken soft tacos, which were surprisingly flavorful. The enchilada trio was pretty good, but the real stars were the hot salsa and queso--hands down the best part of the meal. That salsa should absolutely be complimentary. The chips and fresh tortillas were perfectly crisp and addictive. We washed it all down with a strawberry margarita, because Riverwalk rules. Is it the best Tex-Mex in town? Not really. This was the oldest restaurant at the riverwalk. Amazing outside seating area by the riverwalk and a waitlist suggested we chose right. The service was pretty quick as well, as there was a regular trickling of customers in and out as you would expect in a tourist hot spot. But the food was so underwhelming that it left us very disappointed. My fajitas were cold and bland and so were the other food items we ordered (El Rio, Al pastor). I would not recommend this place for food, but only if you want to just sit by the riverwalk for a drink or two as its ambiance is pretty lit. read more

Let's start with atmosphere sitting on the river with colorful umbrellas with a cool breeze and mariachis singers playing is epic. The servers are happy helpful and present. They bring you chips and Not salsa just sauce, which was different and interesting but grew to like it. I'm originally from California so chips are always served with salsa and move to Florida and chips are always served with salsa. I ordered the soft corn tortilla chicken tacos meal. The meat was juicy and extremely flavorful. The beans were like they have been cooking for days in a salsa sauce and pork and I don't know what else types of herbs, but they were the best beans I've had in a long time and the rice mixed with a little bit of beans were delicious too. Trying to get my fix of real Mexican food and I think I'm doing pretty good. This restaurant has been here for over 80 years. I can't imagine all of the people and the changes that's downtown. San Antonio has gone gone through in this restaurant has survived and is still a local favorite and now an hour town's favorite. read more

I chose this resturant since it's been around for a very long time ni believe it's known for the colorful umbrellas on the riverwalk. First, I've NEVER been to a Mexican resturant where I have to pay for chips and salsa. It's pretty much a given. The chips tasted like bagged chips I'd buy at the grocery store. The salsa didn't taste fresh. More like jar salsa in my opinion. I ordered the taco salad with shrimp. I asked for the shrimp to be well cooked. It wasn't. The lettuce was stuff so tightly in the taco shell that it was hard to get out. It had a dollop of guacamole that looked and tasted like the premade ones I see at the store. It did not taste fresh to me. It also had a large pinch of cheddar cheese that tasted like it came from a bag. Overall nothing tasted like authentic Mexican food to me. The dressing in a plastic take away container totally cheapens all of it. The server was ok. He didn't smile at all u less he was talking to all the other employees just standing around. Thanks to Casa Rio, had an amazing birthday dinner on the River Walk. There was a long wait-time so we gave the name and went for a walk along the river walk. This restaurant seems to have a lot of history, probably one of the oldest restaurants in the River walk. Loved the menu variety, ambiance and inclusivity with vegetarian dishes. My order: Street corn 5/5 Mango margarita 5/5 Veggie enchilada 4/5 Chips and Guacamole 5/5 Started off with the street corn and it was an amalgam of spices with fresh corn with a hint of lime, loved it. I really wanted to like this place, but as a proud Texan, this experience was honestly disappointing. Let's start with the biggest offense: charging for chips and salsa. In Texas, that's practically sacred. I've eaten at Tex-Mex restaurants from El Paso to East Texas, and I honestly can't remember another place that charged extra for chips and salsa. Even worse, the salsa itself was bland, uninspired, and lacked the fresh flavor and kick that Texans expect. The service got off to a rough start as well. We had a large party and were told we couldn't be seated until everyone finished their drinks. I've never encountered that before, and it felt unnecessarily inconvenient and unwelcoming. Then came the menu surprise. A taco salad without meat? In Texas? That's like serving barbecue without brisket. If you're going to offer a taco salad, most people naturally assume it includes the main ingredient that makes it a meal. What makes this review difficult to write is that San Antonio is one of the great food cities in Texas. The bar is high because there are so many outstanding restaurants that celebrate the flavors, hospitality, and traditions that make Tex-Mex special. If you're visiting San Antonio and looking for an authentic Tex-Mex experience, I'd encourage you to visit Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia. It captures the spirit, flavor, and hospitality that many visitors are hoping to find when they come to Texas. I don't write this out of anger. I write it out of disappointment because this restaurant has an opportunity to be much better. As a lifelong Texan, I know good Tex-Mex when I see it, and this place completely missed the mark. Charging $2.00 for a basket of chips is ridiculous, especially when most Mexican restaurants provide them as a courtesy. On top of that, they refuse to allow any substitutions on their meals, which is both inflexible and customer-unfriendly. What really stood out was the taco salad. Instead of of coming with taco meat you have to pay to add it, driving up the cost. The entire experience felt more focused on nickel-and-diming customers than providing good food and service. Texas has set a high standard for Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine, and unfortunately this restaurant doesn't come close. Between the extra charges, lack of flexibility, and disappointing approach to customer service, I left frustrated rather than satisfied. I won't be returning, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone expecting the quality and hospitality that Texans have come to expect. read more

I was so excited to try this restaurant, and it absolutely lived up to the hype. Apparently it is the oldest standing restaurant in the riverwalk which makes it quite unique. Very good, affordable Tex Mex. My whole bill with appetizer, drink, entree, and tip was barely $30. And to top it off- I have leftovers of everything to take back to the room. Topping it all off was our amazing server who made great suggestions and kept an eye on us without being intrusive.
