Casa Tradicional was the most touristy place we ate at. Recommended by someone in the resort pool, as well as our taxi driver (who wanted to take us straight there). Instead we got dropped off downtown and walked (not far) to the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were asked several times who recommended the restaurant. Service was super friendly. Or meal was good. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer, which turned out to be tableside salsa and guac with a big tip jar up front. Luckily my friend had some pesos. The tableside salsa guac was delicious, just unexpected, that in addition to paying for it on the menu bill, we also had to tip before eating?! Very strange. We were then hit up by the Mariachis. For the same price as our cab ride to town, they played us a song. Everyone was nice. The meal was nice. But, it's maybe something you only need to do once.?
Located across the street from the gorgeous cathedral, this restaurant is definitely touristy, but it caters to all nationalities, not just an American and Canadian rip-off place. When we were there, we saw a couple of tables of Mexican tourists as well. Due to its location, the prices are pretty high. However, you get great service, good food, and large portions. Expect to drop around $125 on a dinner for two people if you get booze (less if you don't have drinks). One of the must-order items here is the table made guacamole and salsa. The salsa here is one of my favorite things in the world to eat. It's filled with grilled peppers and tomatoes, and it's smoky and sweet and absolutely delicious. Fresh veggies are mashed right in front of you, and it's delightful. The salsa is served warm, which takes some getting used to, but it's so tasty. The guacamole is the same: as fresh as can be. They even give you a small bowl of salt so you can salt to taste, which I appreciate since I'm very sensitive to salt. The corn chips are a bit oily, but they are fresh. For lunch, hubby opted for beef barbacoa and I got the al pastor shrimp. We thought both were "just okay." I think our final opinion was "good, but not great." The best thing about my shrimp dish was the grilled pineapple slice - smoky, sweet, and oh-so-yummy. My dish had a good amount of shrimp, but I was disappointed that the peppers weren't grilled at all and were just mostly raw chunks (on the menu, it said "grilled"). It came with a small dish of fluffy, buttery rice, and a small pot of beans that were perfectly cooked. Hubby's barbacoa was a bit sad, and came with nothing but a side of corn tortillas. The table next to us had ordered fajitas, and I would get those next time! It's not that they looked particularly good, but there is a SHOW from the staff when you order them. Trust me: if you have kids, order the fajitas! Our lunch was pricey (about $80 U.S. with tip), but reasonable. The atmosphere was fun, with open air windows and a mariachi band that happily took "no" for an answer if you aren't looking to offer tips for music. The restaurant is very clean, the staff spoke just enough English (the menus are in English which is nice), and the service was prompt and friendly. I can see why this restaurant comes so highly recommended.
When we come to Puerto Vallarta we always enjoy a delicious & memorable evening at Casa Traditional. Colorful Mexican decor. Casual dress. The waiter is always engaging in conversation & is entertaining when he brings out the dishes. The flaming fajitas brought to your table is a sight to see. The guacamole made at your table is also a cool touch. Strolling Mariachis. All wanting to make a few bucks. We all had different dishes. Everyone pleased with their food. Solid chicken w/mole, great fajitas. Cocktails elaborate served in fancy Mexican glasses. Food is pricey here for Mexican but worth it for the eventful evening Will be back next trip
Fantastic service and ambiance. One of the owners was there and talked with us the entire time. Fascinating life... and the walls of the restaurant are adorned with their family pictures. The food was very good, but not great. They were very generous with the tequila and their margaritas were amazing. Located just a few yards from the cathedral Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, this restaurant is a must-try.
I'm not one to often leave a yelp review, but this place was amazing! We were given a coupon for a free plate of guacamole on the street, which got us in the door. But it is probably in my top five favorite places to have ever eaten in my life. I didn't take a picture of everything we ate because I didn't expect the food to be that amazing. The salsa molcajete was DELICIOUS!! They ask if you want Serrano pepper inside prior to making it. I love spicy, however, a few in our group do not. So we only did half a Serrano. I thought it was very mild and the others thought it was a perfect amount of spice. We also got the fried cheese and cilantro. Better than any queso fundido I've ever had! We sampled their mole sauce, and for me a person who usually does not like mole, it was good. Very savory. The chile relleno was the best I ever had in my life! The manager said it was his grandmother's recipe. The carne asada inside was so tender and flavorful. The cheese melted perfectly and incredible flavor. So delicious. The carnitas, in the top three I've ever had in my life. Juicey, crunchy, and flavorful all at once. My friend got the chille en nogada. A vegetarian, dish that was savory and sweet. I didn't sample it but it looked and smelled amazing. The rice and beans, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The staff is so friendly and funny. The drinks were strong but delicious! One of my favorite places to have ever gone and a new must visit for my Puerto Vallarta adventures. The malecón and the church are just minutes/seconds away to walk to and visit. Plenty of beautiful shops nearby. You should visit!
Stumbled upon this place after we visited the church downtown. So glad we decided to try it because after we got seated I pulled it up on Yelp and saw all the great reviews for it! We ordered a cielo rojo to start with and it was HUGE! We ordered a few appetizers to share and they were all delicious, my favorite was the guacamole.. probably one of the best guacs I've ever had! Everything was great, service was friendly and fun, we enjoyed watching servers dancing with the fire plates, the owner (I think?) even brought us complimentary shots for our anniversary! So happy we got to try this place and got to enjoy all the delicious food/drinks here! read more

Excellent! We had a late lunch/early dinner here. I really wanted carnitas but it's traditional to eat them for breakfast so they were hard to find. These were so great. We also had huge Miami Vices and table side salsa & guac. All good. Great atmosphere and the staff seemed to enjoy their jobs and each other. Wish I had time to go back! read more

An amazing dining experience is in store for the guest here. We had the Raicillita - a Margarita with Raicilla instead of tequila - with Jamaica flavoring, the Shrimp and Cuitlacoche Enchilada and Enchiladas Mole with Chicken. Accompanied by a table-side prepared roasted tomato salsa and house made chips. The mariachi band was excellent and we enjoyed the flambé presentation of some of our neighbor's dishes. Muy Bien!! This was such a wonderful experience. From the greeting at the door upon arrival to the server calling me a taxi and putting me in it at the end of my meal--everything was top notch service. Ordered a traditional Sangria that was delightful and caused a nap upon return to my hotel, lol. Siestas are so necessary, even on vacay...especially on vacay! Shrimp Enchiladas. Shrimp Enchiladas. Shrimp Enchiladas! Verde Sauce was tart and tasty. And complimentary black beans (my fave) on the side. Salsa made fresh at the table accompanied with fresh chips. Unfortunately (or fortunately for my belly) they didn't have any desserts. Sad face. And let's not forget the wonderful serenade by the guitarists. The atmosphere was so warm and homey and comfortable. Will most def come back again! read more
The ambiance of this restaurant is great. It is kind of hot inside but the staff move you to a place where there is a fan. I had the pescado zarzeandado and it was good. My fiancé had the camarones a la diabla which he also enjoyed. They also bring your drink in oversized glasses which was very funny so you kind of feel like you are in a cartoon. The restaurant was clean. They make the salsa and guacamole in front of you. read more

The service is great it is not right at the main street path but it is the next street from that. Food is fresh and hot and if you like spicy... they have spicy. Casa Tradicional is the epitome of great local Mexican cuisine that you'd hope to get in Puerto Vallarta! Recommended by a local tequila store owner, you never know exactly what to expect when taking advice such as this! No need to worry...it's the real deal! Located just near the town square, the feeling of entering a traditional Mexican restaurant in "old Vallarta" is exactly what you get! The interior is simply cool with it's traditional decor, and the service is very attentive! The margaritas are done quite well, and my recommendation would be to get Don Julio! The carnitas dinner is an exceptional dish with it's plentiful chunks of fried pork! Tender, juicy, and packed full of flavor is what you'll get in this dish! The fajitas are exceptional as well, but defiantly go with the asada fajitas for the best results! No need in goin to the touristy Señor Frogs, or the identical traps, immerse yourself in their culture and give Casa Tradicional a try! read more

Best of Both worlds. (Mexican & American) Starters: Waiters were spot on. Witty, knowledgeable and helpful. Ambiance was chill then later not so much... more on that later. There's live music if you want it. Guacamole & Salsa was a little overhyped from all the reviews. Had a party of 3 and the portions were very small and lacked salt. I recommend to ask for MORE salt when they're making it. Waiter Nino said "it's spicy and not for tourist" he lied... no spice at all. If you're looking for spice this isn't the place and don't believe them. Also there wasn't much chips. Ceviche was NOT worth it. Was more of a cocktail than a dish. Barley any fish but the flavor was there. The octopus starter was absolutely amazing and I recommend that. It was a very different take on the dish. Succulent, sweet and had layers of flavors and texture. Mains: 4.5/5 in all the dishes. Enmoladas was perfection in every sense but wasn't spicy enough. Red snapper was enormous, crispy, salty and full of flavor. It came with a garlic butter that complimented it extremely well. Catch of the day was perfectly cooked. It didn't taste as fresh as I thought it would compared to other places and it was also very small in portion compared to price and the other dishes. I enjoyed the vibe during the beginning of my experience. Chill, relaxing and authentic Mexican music playing. Then it slowly started to change into loud obnoxious music as Americans came in. Again best of both worlds in terms of ambiance and food. read more

This was one of my favorite places we ate at in PVR. It's right by the church of our lady of Guadalupe church and near malecon as well. We were walking around the area and actually started taking pictures of the outside of casa traditional without even knowing it where we were planning on doing lunch. We started with some margaritas, they have mango, strawberry, and original flavors. I ordered the shrimp aguachiles which was absolutely delicious and so fresh. It was one of the best meals I've had in a while. I didn't get any pictures of the food because i was too busy stuffing my face. Service was really friendly and fun, and the restaurant is beautiful. It's not the cheapest place but you're also definitely paying for the ambience and location. read more

10 out of 10! Food, service and ambiance was all amazing!! Brought a group of 10 here for my birthday and we got entertainment and live music. Nino was amazing and hilarious! Every single thing we ate was amazing, but an absolute must was the cilantro cheese appetizer - we all were in heaven! And the salsa made table side was hands down the best salsa I've ever had. Ambiance was great; food and presentation above average, BUT the wait staff brought our bill back when they did not feel we had tipped enough. We tipped the guac guy and the musicians ahead of the final bill. I'm in my 50's and I have never been presented with the bill for a second time due to unsatisfactory tip amount. This place is next level. I apologize if I left a review before. I'm a bit hammered, 4 shot bloody Mary, 2 double margaritas, and 6 tequila shots prior to arrival at the restaurant. This place kicks mayor royal arrrzzzzź.... 3 rd time here. I had the shrimp Chile rellenos this time. My girlfriend had the cochinita pibil, I don't know what "pibill" is, but translation must be freeeeekeeeen good pork. The service is excellent. I asked my waiter what would be best, octopus, enchiladas or chille relleno? He recommended shrimp chille relleno ($200+ pesos more for octopus)(LA restaurants do chille relleno burritos that kick ass) Ask for Nacho (ignasio) he has taco recommendations for you. Follow his lead don't be a wuss... typical person that is afraid of lizards and butterflies) this place is good. We also had oysters, guacamole and fresh habanero salsa made fresh table side. read more
For starters, for a party of 3 tip of 15% was automatically added to the bill! They danced, sung, clapped & eyes guess that is their routine with tourists. The food was average to say the least, & you are paying for entertainment. A bill of $70 bucks charged after ordering 3 entrees, & 3 drinks for a party of 3. I should have gone to a smaller restaurant with less hype & more traditional food!! read more

Perhaps you've been to the over the top, commercialized "mexican" place in town and while you enjoy parts of it, you wonder is there some place that isn't quite as raucous, has well executed food and beverages? Perhaps a place that is good for a celebration with friends that you can actually hear when you are talking to one another and have enough room that you don't feel like you are part of 3 other conversations? This is that place! It also happens to be in a nicer neighborhood (the "gong sound" we were hearing is from the church near by), and a short 2 blocks to the Malecon. Yes, it is commercial and it's aiming squarely at the tourist trade. It is also subdued, the food is very good, the service top notch and the prices are a bit spendy but still reasonable. We started with the table side created salsa. They make it to your liking in terms of how much spice you want. They use fresh roasted tomatoes, onion tomatillo and as much or as little jalapeno as you like. Preferring a little more heat than my wife, I asked and was given the remaining jalapeno on a side plate. Fresh - as in right off the grill - I don't believe I've had warm salsa before and it was really good. We ordered a fried cheese with cilantro and green salsa (salsa verde). Different and similar to our first encounter with fried cheese this week, this time it was swimming in the salsa - which was mild. Everything was hot, served in a large molcajete (traditional stone bowl, along with a tejolote it corresponds to a mortar and pestle from other cultures). Trying to constrain ourselves so we could eat all we ordered we opted to pass on the table side quacamole, although that looked amazing at other tables. The wife ordered a margarita - the server brought a large salt rimmed glass with ice, lime juice and probably some simple syrup and a large bottle of tequila. Once it was on the table, he made a very generous poor. The wife appreciated the flavor and that it wasn't overly sweet. I went for one of the house specialties - Cochinita Pibl - a very tender, flavorful, marinated pork. The wife is really having a great vacation and had her third entree with shrimp in five days. The shrimp fajitas was prepared perfectly, and flamed at the table with more top shelf Tequila to add both flavor and pizzaz. They do offer a half kg of shrimp for the truest of shrimp lovers among us. Live entertainment was a Mariachi band (2 on guitar, one on bongos) - the music sounded more authentic to me vs. "the other place" and while dressed well, they were not wearing the cliche, over the top outfit. We were able to save room for the flan, probably one of the best I've had. Their menu is somewhat constrained (and available on their website) however we will be going back next week when our friends are in town with us so we can explore more of the options they have. It's a fun place, you will find the food above average and the service very good. I doubt we will go back to that other, over the top, commercialized tourist destination. Why would we now that we know about this place. Reservations recommended unless you're planning to arrive early. read more

This place was so delicious, we went twice during our vacation. Highly recommend the PIBIL! I had their mole twice, once with chicken, and then cheese. Soooo delicious. The service is outstanding and everything is very fresh. I can't wait to go back. read more

Casa Tradicional was recommended to us by a local we met at a store in Malecon. The service and the ambiance at the place were truly amazing - they had live music and it felt authentically Mexican. The food was good, especially the salsa and guacamole made right in front of us. I ordered the chicken fajitas and they put on a show when they fired it at our table! The brisket was ok but very fatty. Overall, the experience was great! It was more expensive than we thought it would be hence the 4 stars. read more

Amazing! Phenomenal and quality food, superb service, and eclectic atmosphere. The steak was rich, juicy, and perfectly cooked. The passion fruit margaritas were delicious! The entire staff was warm and inviting, and they ensured we had a fantastic experience. The guacamole was astounding and the live music was exquisite. read more
The vibe at this place was everything! The waiters are so fun. Everyone wears a mask and they follow social distancing. I came here for a bday dinner and they made my dinner so much fun. If you order the fajitas they bring them to the table flaming. They also make the guac at the table read more

If you're in town, you MUST come to this house of tradition. The food, the atmosphere, the people, the live music --- words can't describe the experience that you'll get from a visit here. I went to visit this place with my family since it was highly recommended by our taxi driver. Decorations in the restaurant are beautiful. The food we ate was delicious, especially the chile rellenó with meat filling. The enchiladas were amazing, my husband asked for queso fresco to be added inside enchiladas instead of the cheese they serve them with. What impressed me the most was the attention all the waiters provide you. I highly recommend this place read more
