I take Yelping seriously, so normally if I have standard sub-par service or food, I just don't leave a review. So it is with little joy that I leave this poor review here now. As hot lava spews from my ass, I'm left wondering, what the Hell was in my tortellini? My wife and I came here because all the reviews were terrific and it was our 6 month wedding anniversary. Wanting to avoid typical chain food, I picked this place. I regret it beyond all belief. First, although it was 60 degrees outside, it was hotter than a snakes ass in a wagon rut inside. Don't they figure that a restaurant full of people might make it warmer than normal? Ok fine, it was warm. This could have been redeemed by food that didn't liquefy my intestines. Or taste like the styrofoam boxes we got as takehome containers. I've had Michaelina's frozen entree tortellini with more taste. Mind you, it didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste like anything. And upon immediately leaving the restaurant, I felt the gurgle in my guts. By the time I was driving home, I was running red lights, risking life and limb so as to not soil my shorts. Just to drive home the point, my wife had the exact same thing. Same salad, some dressing, same styrofoam tortellini in cardboard sauce. She is currently pounding on the bathroom door as, guess what, her intestines are liquefying too. In the truck she ripped the most godawful fart that would make teamster blush. She does not usually do this. If the owners see this, I want my money back. I've had bad meals places, but I don't usually leave reviews on them. Check it out. Normally I leave good reviews. MVR stands for Mahoning Valley Restaurant for those of you who are curious. =) It's a fourth generation Italian restaurant that has been in the Smoky Hollow neighborhood since the 1920s. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. We went for lunch with 6 coworkers at around 12. The service was slightly slow so get there early. The lunch menu had many inexpensive but tasty options. I had the totellini which had decent portion size. The Italian wedding soup was also decent. A good lunch option overall. read more

Came here after a YSU visit with wife and daughter...read reviews that were ok so we gave it a try...we got the calimari as an app...lousy frozen out of the bag.....daughter had the chix parm sandwich which she said was ok...wife had somekind of eggplant role up dish which was lousy!.rigatoni was swimming in water and eggplant was horrible....I had the spicy bowtie pasta w/ blackened chix and hot peppers..which was very good...the salad with dinners was a waste...small bowl with lettuce and one cherry tomato swimming in dressing...our server was kind of rushing us to order and I don't know why...it was 330 and we were the only ones in the. Love it. .I like they have the wheat pasta, that's a huge plus, I get that with the spicy bowtie dish, instead of the bowties and add grilled chx and extra hot peppers. . One of the best pasta dishes I've ever had, can't wait to go back for more! read more

I heard how great this place was. called up and tried to make reservations. Lady told me they were not taking them due to a "game" tonight. Okay so I thought I would go and get food to go. While I was there I heard the hostess tell someone on the phone wanting a reservation for 6. She took their name and said will seat you when you get here.The food to go was terrible. Hardly any sauce to cover the pasta. Meatballs very small, soup (wedding) was salty. Salad was wilted. If I didn't live so far I would have taken it back. My friends sandwhich was small and salty. For thirty bucks I could have got to Burger King and had a better meal. Don't know how you said in business for 80 years. Maybe cause you are near a college. those starving students. read more

This restaurant has always been a favorite. Recently, I noticed a cut back in portion size, without a price increase, which, in reality, is a price increase. I always hate when businesses adjust quality/quantity. You have a winning menu, keep it. If you're in the Youngstown area, the MVR is a must stop. It's full of tradition and personality that has been carried down through three generations of the family business. Food is great and the prices are very reasonable. Service is always above average, especially considering how busy things get on a weekend. I'm not a bocce player but the courts are impressive and the activity adds to the unique atmosphere of the outdoor patio. The MVR is a great place for a casual dinner, and we've been there a few times with a party of six or so and never had an issue. The pizza is always good as is the pasta. Management keeps a great eye on the flow and service has always been great. Parking could use a little help, but i believe they may have been working on that the last time we were down there. read more

Wonderful! We had food catered for a bridal shower, absolutely delicious! We had the sausage, peppers and onions, meatballs, cavatelle, green beans almondine, green beans marinara, baked chicken, plenty of food for everyone and we all thought it was very good. I have always had a wonderful experience at MVR, the service is friendly and quick even during busy lunch hours when faculty from YSU are there for their lunch meetings and the like. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful as well. My personal favorite is the Tressel Tortellini but you can't go wrong with trying any of their classic menu items or even whatever they have on special. The prices are reasonable and the bar is always stocked. Go give them a shot, you won't be disappointed. read more

My bridal shower was held at the MVR this past weekend and it was absolutely perfect. The food was fabulous and the service was great! There was always someone available during the party to attend to anything at all and the room looked amazing. I don't know how there are any good reviews on here. Came in for lunch and waitress had four tables at any given time. We waited a little less than 15 minutes to receive drinks, and my mother's drink order wasn't even taken. Three people who were seated after us got their food before we got our appetizer. My mother's soup had no noodles, my dressing came on my salad not on the side like I specified, and our waitress was NOWHERE to be found. This was very much the WORST SERVICE!! I will never be coming back here, especially after the several errors that were made and could not even be corrected because the waitress was never there. read more

They couldn't get my order correct on three occasions in the same evening. I ordered the three pepper chicken and it came out with zero chicken, so I nicely asked the waiter to take it back. We both joked about it because mistake do happen. But when he came out the second time with my dish, the chicken was frozen! I told the waiter and he was apologetic and nice about the situation. We always stop at the MVR when in Y-town. They are traditional Italian food with their own original recipes. The staff is always great. Because of that we had my daughters Youngstown wedding reception there after she was to get married on Anna Maria Island, Florida. Irma had different ideas. The MVR staff went WAY above to make the day the wedding she didn't have. I knew I would not be disappointed by the food or the cost but I never expected so much kindness, professionalism, and service from the staff. I would have given Joe and his staff 6 stars if possible. For good Italian food in a family atmosphere Cassese's MVR is a must. read more
