All I have to say is NAPOLIAN DYNAMITE!! Their Napolians are sooooo freakin' GOOD!! I've come across this place about twice, but never went in b/c it just didn't look that interesting from the outside. But today it just all of a sudden started raining, and I had just gotten out of Guitar Center (next door to this place) and I really didn't feel like running/walking in the rain, so in I went to Castro Bakery. It's a pretty big space, but their options are not as big. Once you walk in, to your right you'll see a bunch of tacky cake toppers (ala 1980's), balloons, and soft cushioned decorated toilet seats for sale (yes, you're reading this correctly). Of all the things to hang in a bakery, WHY a floral decorated soft seat cover?!? Anyways, they have the typical latino baked goods and Italian baked good. I believe they make cakes to order for weddings, baby showers, etc. If you like Napolians, try this place out. read more

If its one thing that Northern VA does well, it is both Korean and Spanish bakeries. Get the tres leches cake. It's only $3.50 and f*cking good. They also have a lot of other pastries for less than a $1. What more do you want? And they speak English here too, so don't worry if your Spanish skills lack a bit. If Eden Center for whatever reason doesn't tickle your fancy or you're in the mood for some tres leches, Castro is literally across the street. read more

I would be angry if my experience weren't so comically bad. I ordered a large cake (for 50 people) that was supposed to have fruit toppings. It was presented to me on pickup with no toppings, just a blank white cake. I asked the manager - Johnny - to add fruit to the cake as agreed, but he said I'd have to pay extra. Unfortunately the event is today and I was now in a bind, so I agree. The manager, Johnny agrees, charges me extra (which he insists I pay in advance before seeing the final product), puts 6 strawberries and 6 peach slices around the border and calls it a day. Keep in mind the cake is huge, so the white space is stark. What's more, Johnny tells me they are out of fruit (!) and therefore could not add more. I now have a mostly blank cake with some sad, lonely pieces of fruits around the border. So I paid twice for fruit, and still have a mostly blank cake. read more

The concept of sweetness varies amongst cultures. Europeans generally prefer pastries and other desserts more on the sweet side. Castro's is more in the Mexican/ Latin America tradition of pastries that are less sweet but incorporate caramelized milk flavors in cakes. The fruit tart is simply delicious. The pastry cream sitting below the fruit topping is rich but not too sweet. The crust holding the tart is more along the lines of a shortbread cookie crust allowing a contrast in textures. Yes, the peaches taste like they came from a jar but given the underlying foundation, that flaw becomes secondary distraction. The Napoleon's cream layers are along the same lines as the tart though this treat doesn't fare as well over time as the tart - the puff pastry layers become soggy relatively quickly. The tres leches cakes are good though there are other places that serve better - I would't turn away an offering though. Other pastries are more along the inoffensive lines - just there but nothing exceptional. The "crispies" (elephant ears) are an exception. The sugar sprinkling on this pastry is very good. Eat it quickly - part of the appeal is the crispness of the bite. It is much less appealing as the pastry becomes more stale. Castro's is in a much improved location (across Wilson Blvd from Eden Center at Seven Corners) from its former haunts where parking was difficult. Parking can still be challenging around noon on weekends when the lines form for dim sum at Hong Kong Pearl Seafood. Service is prompt and friendly. read more

Ay Castros! So close to the heart.....I remember when this family sold cakes out of their home and going to pick up cakes with my mother as a little girl. How you've grown! And yet and still you keep the same great delicious flavor! Castro's bakery has excellent customer service, excellent flavor (tree leches cake and their fruit cakes are aaaammmmaaaaaazzzing)!! So worth every cent! Highly recommend this place for great flavor...you may not get the fancy decor....but your taste buds will definitely feel fancy! read more

I'm going to be biased and give them a 5 because my mother had purchased my birthday cakes growing up from this exact bakery and from the age of 3 I have been in love. Now the location did change since I lived in the area eons ago, but the pastries do not! The fruit cake and the creamy center custard is the best thing on the menu. I could eat a medium cake to myself! They're cakes aren't very modern or innovative but if taste is what you're looking for, you've come to the write place. I haven't tried all their pastries, but the ones that I have are just as tasty. Not tastier, but tasty. All in all, this bakery is not modern or on the verge, but it humble, has delicious cakes and pretty tasty pastries. It's not too pricey either, but there are bakeries in the area priced much cheaper for the same fruit tart you're buying. And by much cheaper I mean .25¢-.75¢. I totally recommend coming for cake and trying something else while you're at it. read more

Bought a red velvet cake for my nephews birthday. In all of my 70 years on this earth I have never tasted such an awful cake. Everyone thought it was ok at best. My nephew thought, as did I, that the frosting was horrible. If I had bought a run of the mill cake from a supermarket I would have gone to the market and asked for a refund. I returned to Castro's with the receipt and spoke to Pam (a manager, who was very very nice!). She told me she would have the owner call me. No response from owner. For a $45 cake I would have expected a call. So I would not ask for anyone not to patronize the place, but I would surely advise you to avoid the Red Velvet cakes. I, though, will never patronize the bakery again. And I say that sadly. A good owner would have responded promptly. read more

Baked goods are absolutely amazing! I always get the fruit cake slices. As for ordering cake it's a nightmare. They would not let us pick out a cake on the wall and modify it. Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me. They said the cakes come as they are. Plus the toys on top are an extra 20 dollars! It's such an over charged for nothing. Don't get me wrong the cakes are delicious but trying to order a cake as we wanted it is ridiculous. The customer should be able to modify a cake as they wish. I recommend they make the processes less of a headache for customers. read more

The smell of sugar is really intense walking into the bakery so I was worried that the baked goods would be overpoweringly sweet. However I was surprised to find that the strawberry and peach cake had just the right amount of sugar and was an interesting combination although I didn't find too much else I was interested in trying. read more

94 degrees and too hot to eat lunch. Saw this place from the highway and made my way there... Out of Town guests, it's not easy to access the strip center... Called Seven Corners and there are numerous roads and intersections... Be patient and you will figure it out ! If I could give this place less than one star I would. First of all the lady who was attending me gave me attitude because she couldn't understand what I was saying on how to spell a name. The lady next to me in line even told her what I was trying to say. Then once I paid she told me it should only take 20 minutes. After 20 minutes I asked her what was happening and she said it would take another 15 minutes. I kid you not it's been over an hour and I am still waiting. Customer service wise this place sucks. I went in to buy a cake for a friends birthday. I called ahead of time to ask about pricing, cake types and what not to make sure I they had what I was looking for. They said they did so that made me happy and I looked no more into other bakeries. Boy was I wrong in coming here. I made a specific indication of how I wanted the cake decoration to be. I asked for multicolor letters that spelled "Happy Birthday *friends name*" all caps, and the name is cursive. Thats all I asked for. When the cake was ready, not only did get ugly letters but they toke the liberty to add pumpkin orange decoration around the cake. I didn't ask for that and made it very clear to the lady that it was not what I asked for. She began arguing me saying that I should of been more specific. Now, if I'm not saying anything about any further decorations besides colored letters then clear that I don't want it otherwise I would've said something, right? She argued with me saying that the bakery or whoever he is that decorates cakes didn't like that I'd ask him to make change. THIS IS A CAKE I'M PAYING FOR! I should get getting what I pay for, it's not my fault he can't follow instructions. At the end, she said it would look ugly if he tried to fix it. I told her specifically that I wanted the orange decoration to be removed and replaced with just white to cover the stained white frosting. What I got was white frosting placed over the orange. Never was the orange decoration removed. I was very upset and if I would of had more time I would of insisted on my money back. Never am I going back, terrible customer service, and definitely not what I expected. The cake wasn't even Tres Leches like I asked, it was not moist like Tres Leches is meant to be so I won't be recommending this place. It surely does not deserve to be placed as the top bakeries in the Norther Virginia. I drove 30 mins out my way because of there ratings....disappointed!!! Can I mention that upon getting home, I removed the ugly "fix" and replaced the stained frosting with plain white frosting. Ok where to start? I know how rude the staff is including there manager. I remember when they had the two bakeries Castro in Arlington Va and then Castro 2 in Falls Church expanded and ruined it. Castro in Arlington bakery use to be my favorite bakery until they closed it in Febuary and is left with Castro 2. Well yesterday I went to place a order for a small wedding cake with roses on top that honestly I think I couldve placed them my self for 30 people not like it was a huge cake or with layers (one layer)where I know the other bakery wouldve charged a max of $80 dollars they wanted to charge $200 for a cake that seriously not even Cake Boss wouldve charged that wow. I said never mind walked out went to Tiffanys Bakery got a cake for 50 to 60 people tres leche (3 milk) and they are charging me $85.00 Save your trip I know if I am a paying customer I want good service nothing is free in this world start by hiring new employees that don't look stressed out or rolling there eyes for each question you ask. This place is a gem. Got the tres leches cake for a birthday party and it was a huge hit--everyone loved it. It was rich, creamy, perfectly sweet, and an amazing bargain at $35. That cake (10") easily fed 20 adults plus some second helpings even though the sign says it's for up to 18. Friendly and attentive staff and great service. It was not crowded on a rainy weekday afternoon. Someone took my order right away and I only had to wait 10 minutes for them to prepare the cake for me. It's fun to practice your Spanish here, but there is always an English speaker available. The apple turnover was also yummy--flaky and not too sweet. They're doing some major renovation of the storefronts at this shopping center but everyone is open for business. read more

Really wanted to rate this 0 stars. I ordered a cake for my Sweet 16 daughters birthday. A sheet cake which was a bit pricey at around $40. 2 days before the birthday party my mother died so I called to cancel the cake within the required 24 hour cancellation policy. I was told I needed the receipt which I had. When I went into the store for a refund I was told I coukd not get one because I didn't have the yellow order slip, just the receipt. The receipt had nothing but the cost, not a description of the order, or even the store name on it.(totally generic). had also bought 2 candles (1 & 6), so the manager/owner said the total price didn't reflect anything on their menu. She refused to give me a refund and basically called me a liar, saying I didn't order a cake there! The store was about to close and I informed the owner that I wasn't leaving until I got a refund. She actually went in the back and looked through her surveillance video of the day and approximate time that I had ordered the cake. It took about 1/2 an hour to find. But of course she did find it and grudgingly refunded my money. I was fuming at this point that she basically was treating me like a criminal. She was so rude to me. I told her that my mother had just died and that i didnt appreciate her disrespectful attitude, and certainly had better things to do than pretend to have purchased a cake there so i could get a refund! She could care less. She gave me my money, held the door open for me and said "Vamos!!" Unbelievable!!! This place has really gone down hill, the employees give horrible customer service. I go here at least 10 times a year for family birthday cakes, I will no longer attend this place. Every time I get in line to order a cake, I am told to wait in the corner and someone will assist me. The one time I do not wait in line and automatically go to that corner no one helps me place an order. There were 3 customers in line for the bread ordering, and 2 cashiers, and 2 bread handlers. I asked one of the cashiers for help, and she gave me an attitude, told me to wait. While she stood there doing absolutely nothing. She told me to stand in line, for what?! She could have easily helped me, they did not need 4 people for 3 customers. Very disorganized, and the prices I have paid lately for the work the cakes get done is unbelievable. Today was my fathers birthday so my mother,father,and I went to this store to get a cake. We first were deciding what to get for his cake. We picked the cake and afterwards the employee asked us what would u like written we told her first "happybirthday #1 dad, #1 husband. When we told her this she told us that it will cost for every single Letter. We later then told her to change it since it'd cost us more. We told the employee "can u the. Write this instead," we wrote one the paper "H.B. #1 dad and husband." She said ok. When we done telling her my mother asked if it could be with red frosting and she said "it'll cost more." She later said that "the only one's that are free are white and pink." We still picked pink. after we were waiting for a few mins she comes back and sees that the writing said "happy birthday #1 dad and husband." and by noticing the frosting of the letters looked liked some of the letters were fixed because there were smudges. The letters were terrible. My mother and father are both bakers and seeing this really was terrible. My mother asked for a refund and the employee said "let me speak to the manager." my mother said ok and that she'll wait. So we did. After another few mins of waiting here we see her come out and expecting probably she'd speak Spanish she talked to the employee who spoke Spanish it seemed o ln in English telling them "where's the cake?..someome wanted a refund?..wheres the cake?." my mother and father told her "its in the fridge over there. The manager walked to the fridge and looked through the glass and said "ok what about the cake I don't see anything wrong with it.." my mother and father said that the cake was terrible and that there were smudges on it. One of the employee said that they can scrape off the writing and write over it again. My mother said that it would damage the layer on it,which was chocolate. Afterwards after that talk the manager said to my mother "well you made one of my employee's cry." all the employees we saw and the one that was helping us were nice and by looking at them it didn't look like they knew English that much. When the manager said that my mom asked for her refund and afterwards said "we're decorators.." and she said to both of my parents "well since your both decorators I don't want to see you here again then. I picked one star because I couldn't give them a ZERO at the minimum. My mother went to Castro's Bakery and placed an order for a Baby Shower cake at least a week in advance. First you can only choose from a number of cakes off the menu. After being given a hard time, we wanted to change the color from blue to lavender at a extra cost. On the day of the scheduled pick up, the person who picked up the cake waited for almost an hour. The cake ordered was not even ready! The cake was made while the person waited. Since the person who had to pick up the cake was already late for the baby shower due the lateness of the bakery, person left without checking the cake; It was rushed so it looked terrible, unprofessional, and a mess. The cake was not even the correct color as requested. It was blue not lavender as requested for a GIRL. The cake was sent back untouched. I was very disappointed and would never use them.
