Eating dinner at Catalan was definitely the highlight of my recent trip to Palm Springs. My boyfriend and I decided to go on the final night of our vacation to treat ourselves to a nice meal away from the downtown Palm Springs scene. Boy, were we ever surprised by the amazing dinner we had. We were promptly seated as soon as we walked in to the restaurant, and even though we did not sit outside, I was impressed with the indoor/outdoor seating options. I always like to start my meals with a nice glass of wine, and I was truly impressed with the wine list. Catalan has a large selection of $25 wines by the bottle, and we selected a delicious bottle of Pinot Noir. We started our meal with the sauteed garlic octopus. The octopus was seasoned well and perfectly cooked. I loved the addition of the crispy black chickpeas to the dish. We also ordered the Romaine Salad to split, which was essentially a nicely prepared caesar salad. My boyfriend ordered the Jidori chicken for his entree, and it was simply to die for. Probably the most tender and juicy bite of chicken I have had in YEARS!!! The skin on the outside was perfectly crisp, and the portion was very generous. It was definitely one of the stars of the entire meal. The chicken came with smashed potatoes on the side, which we also very yummy and a great compliment to the chicken. I ordered the Grilled Arctic Char, and I was in HEAVEN! Perfectly cooked, with an very well prepared romesco sauce on the side. I am not a huge olive fan, but the flavors blended beautifully and I devoured every bite. The service at the restaurant was flawless and we definitely felt well taken care of the entire time. This place is nice. Good food, good price. The drinks are cheap and top notch. So, why am I giving it only 3 stars? Because the service was terrible. We had an older woman named Elaine (probably in her early 50's) wait on us and we couldn't have been more disappointed. First off, we weren't even greeted for about ten minutes. Our drinks didn't arrive in a timely matter and we noticed that the surrounding tables had gotten bread and of course, we didn't...until we asked. Our first course came quickly and was absolutely wonderful. The second course took far too long and when it finally came, the dishes were given to the wrong people. We didn't say anything and corrected it between ourselves. We waited and waited for refills until we finally flagged her down and also ended up waiting a long while for our check. The food was wonderful and the flavors rich, but we will make sure we get a different waitress next time we come in. I had the Skirt Steak and loved everything about it. The side of sunchoke and cheese gratin was amazing. It also had a salsa verde drizzled on the steak and it complimented the it perfectly. My wife had the Ribeye steak which was a very large serving (no, she did not finish it!) and also loved it but had to tell the waitress what temp. she wanted it because the lady did not ask. Our friends loved the Paella and the whole Seabass. I wish our experience had been better. We will give this place another shot in hopes that our next waiter will treat us correctly. read more

Service : Wow! Service is back! Food was fun, new, and absolutely delicious. Cory the Bartender, who doubled as a Superhero, tended bar while serving 3 other tables and taking time to interact with me and my husband. I had a couple questions about the menu and Cory answered them like he was gonna cook it himself! He interacted with his tables like he was so proud of the food he was serving, service he was providing, and the family that started Catalan. Food: I had the Scallops, which I was sold on as soon as I read the menu. Best scallops ever!! They sat on butternut squash purée with wild mushrooms, chorizo, that's all I remember. Mmmmm. My husband had beef short ribs (what's new), hubby loves his red meat, but I actually splurged and had a bite of this Amazingly tender beef rib with polenta and some delicious sauce. "Melted in my mouth" is what my husband actually said. A girlfriend recommend yelp, so I'd like to thank Catalan personally for a wonderful experience! We"ll be back for sure! read more

I loved this place. We had a blast with our friends and loved the food. The swordfish is the best we've had and the Sangria is perfect. This place has a true fine dining feel and my husband and I will be back. We had an awkward moment with one of the employees but that did not change the fact that this is possibly the best restaurant in town. I went into detail about this on my previous review that is not showing. Needless to say the food is exceptional and service is great. We were very pleased. If you want to experience something new, refreshing, and different from anything else in the desert, COME HERE! Service is great and the atmosphere is perfect. The place was booked on a Wednesday so make sure to make a reservation. We're thinking of coming again tomorrow. My husband says we will keep going until we have tried everything on the menu. Took my brother here for his birthday what a great well ran restaurant. Live music amazing cool patio and the food was authentic big flavor! There's a place I love to go to in NewYork that makes so much food a day and when they run out they just run out of it. To me these are the real deal restaurants no cheap throw it in a pan 7 min pasta with scallops. Dishes here are made hours before with love and expertise from a real chef like Mario Batali style! Service here was outstanding very professional and carried out with a smile! Staff were super friendly and owner and chef came by our table to see how the food tasted. I was told the menu does change from time to time because there are seasons baby for all of us and also for quality fish and products. I highly recommend this place Batali has hit the desert!!!!! When it comes to extraordinary Spanish cuisine, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere - Catalan exceeds my expectations every time! Last night I had Chef Drew's new Catalonian Seafood Stew - it was a culinary delight - incredibly fresh seafood perfectly cooked in a tasty saffron broth. I also enjoyed the owner's wine recommendation of a Spanish Rose. It was light and refreshing (not sweet at all), especially on a warm desert evening. We tend to sit in the bar as we love the superior service of the bartender, Cory. Rest assured, however, you will get the same level of service in the dining room as well. Catalan Mediterranean Cuisine is a great place to enjoy authentic and delicious Italian and Spanish dishes in Rancho Mirage. The restaurant has a cozy and elegant atmosphere, with a spacious patio and a sleek atrium. The service is friendly and attentive, and the wine list is impressive. The surf and turf combo for New Year's Eve was amazing. The giant river prawn was crispy and juicy, and the filet mignon was tender and flavorful. The salad, soup, dessert, and champagne were also excellent. This was my first time to Catalan and must say it was an amazing experience. My daughter had juat flown in who resides in northern spain. Upon our arrival we did not have a reservation however were able to get seated in the bar very promptly by the chef owner who was very kind accomodating and apologetic for our wait. I must say the entire evening was amazing food from the grilled octopus, shrimp, mushrooms and many others to mention a few. My daughter said it was like she was back home. Been here several times with family and friends. Came recently for Tuesday tapas special for $20 a person. The food here is sometimes very lovely and other times just OK. As for the special, The bar was packed with locals, I guess they know about the special already. With that said, we arrived slightly late and were told by a waitress that they only bring out a certain amount of food for the special. We will have to come right when they open for a more detailed review of the Tuesday special. Family-owned and all really nice staff. read more

I haven't been here in a while and I regret it has taken me this long to come back. Saturday evening and the place was packed. Thankfully we had a reservation and were seated promptly. My seafood stew was delicious and the chef had substituted prawns for lobster :-0 The rest of my party enjoyed the paella and the veal skirt steak and they said it was very flavorful. We took our servers recommendation and enjoyed a delicious bottle of Nita. Overall a fabulous experience once again. The live music is always a plus! read more

From the start we were greeted quickly even though it was busy. We were seated in a nice spot in the center of the restaurant in a courtyard looking area. We were warmly greeted and given water, great bread/dip and told the specials. We had the tapas trio of duck skewers, goat cheese peppers and chips. My wife had the Paella and I had the veal skirt steak. Both were done really well. I was trying to decide 4 or 5 stars but couldn't find a reason not to go with the 5 stars... My 4 friends and I had dinner there on a Saturday night. My one friend had the Samon which was ok and the rest of us all had the seafood Paella. we all thought it was very bland dry. Also overpriced we also had the Charred deep water Spanish Octopus which we all thought it tasted bad. I have owned several restaurants and for the prices they charge hey should have tablecloths instead of just older bare wooden tables. I do not recommend this restaurant the food and atmosphere were very poor. read more

I lived in Spain several years ago and fell in love with the food, among other things. I get really excited when I see Spanish cuisine but I am almost always disappointed by the price or the quality of food. Catalan is AMAZING! The prices are very reasonable and the food is quite authentic. I just love the basil martini's and the paella is delicious (they certainly don't skimp you on the meat). This has become my new hot spot of the desert. read more

The paella is the best I have had anywhere. Also, the lamb tacos melt in your mouth. The service by Corey is exceptional. Ask for Corey; he makes excellent suggestions. The music is live but not too loud, so you can enjoy your meal and have a great conversation. There is nothing in the Palm Springs area that even compares to the Mediterranean food at Catalan. Tried this restaurant for the first time during restaurant week. Would definitively go back. Everything was great... food, service, atmosphere. They didn't have the outside courtyard open.... it looked kind of abandoned... maybe it was just this time of year but if they would install some misters that would be a fabulous place to eat... especially since the rest of the restaurant was filled. read more

I just had a great dinner at Catalan this evening with my wife for the first time and had a truly amazing meal (swordfish). My wife had paella that she said was bettter than any she had in Spain. Ate here last saturday night. Very disappointing. The food was uninteresting and somewhat bland. No attention paid to presentation. Extremely limited wine list. I don't get what people like about this very mediocre restaurant. The space is nice but the food doesn't match. Won't be rushing back. read more
