I love this place! It's reasonably priced, and the food is always on point. Their fish and chips are always perfect. The coating they have for fried items us simple but delicious. If you dont do fried food, they have grilled items that are awesome. The salmon portion is HUGE! Their beef ribs are also must try. If you are one of those people who hate the poor, this spot is not for you... this is a skid row spot, with diners of all walks of life. Show some respect to the community. Catch 21, is located in a very unpleasant area in Downtown. Kinda hidden beneath a bunch of trees and looks like a trash/abandoned restaurant. Many homeless nearby. Although food is cheaper than most seafood places nearby. A variety of meals ranges from Fish to Ribs, Sandwiches to Chowders, Fried Seafood like Shrimp and Calamari. They also have sides which includes Baked Potatoes, Cole Slaw, Rice, French Fries, Garlic Bread and more. The inside isn't the cleanest nor is the outside, but hey it's downtown. And not the fancy downtown. The workers messed up my order. I order Ribs and Fish with Rice. Instead I got Ribs with Fried Shrimp and French Fries. They took it back and apologized. They Fish doesn't look as crispy or good from other restaurants but it was soft in texture and floppy. Rice was cooked well. Ribs were soft and flavorful. Tartar sauce tasted more like ranch. Too bad I don't smoke, but for all you cool guys and gals wandering skid row adjacent LA its definitely an added bonus! Portions are pretty generous but this place is all about quantity over quality. The fish and chips came with 5 huge pieces of golden brown battered sole or something, but like I said above quantity over quality. The pieces were very heavy on the batter and light on the flavor, plus the fries tasted like oil bombs. Since I went with a bunch of coworkers I was also able to try a few other things which further engrained in my mind how bad this place is. On Central, just off the Alameda corridor leading from Little Tokyo to the American Apparel Building and the 10 Freeway, you will see two fish restaurants across from each other. Reminds one of the competing cheesesteak institutions Pat's & Geno's at 9th & Wharton in Philly, except only one place is busy here. The lines are across the way at Fisherman's Outlet. This parking lot is often near empty in comparison. I do not like standing in line. Fisherman's Outlet is good, but is it not that much better to warrant standing in a Disneyland sized line and scrounging around for a table. Catch 21 (nifty name) is a very simple, unassuming fish place. The fish here is good and fresh (as the fish market is withing spitting distance). Speaking of "spitting distance" this ain't the best neighborhood in LA, but having gone to college a couple of blocks off Detroit's Cass Corridor, I have no problem with it. The area is industrial and grimy and you may well be asked for some spare change as you walk into the place, but its life in the big city, eh? I usually get my food to go, as I work nearby in Little Tokyo. There is a good selection of fish and seafood and you can get it grilled or fried. Simple side items (fries cole slaw) come with the order. All in all it is a solid choice if you need a fish & chips fix or want some grilled fish near Little Tokyo that does not come with an obligatory soy base, a teriyaki sauce or covered sea weed that I have to pick off with the cop sticks 'cause I don't want to upset the waitress or mess up the order due to a translation problem. Sorry I digress. Back to the fish & chips, they are meaty, fleshy pieces of fish that are not over-friend. They are crunchy enough, but not too greasy. Go here, get it to go. The place is in an industrial part of downtown. If you were a tourist you may not venture here. We live in downtown so pretty much nothing scares us. I feel it's safe. There is parking. This is a no frills joint. Don't count on decor, ambiance, and amenities. There are picnic tables inside and outside. There is a flat screen TV and smaller TV in the dining area. Cash only, but there is an ATM inside. I prefer grilled fish versus fried and they have plenty of both. I originally ordered the sea bass but they were sold out. I then opted for the halibut. It is served with cole slaw and then choice of fries, baked potato, or rice. My fish was prepared just the way I like......grilled. Very simple and very basic. The quality of the halibut was decent. Add you own salt, pepper, lemon, tarter sauce if you desire. The wife had grilled tiliapia. Also grilled and prepared pretty basic. In this case basic = not bad at all! You can tell it's a family owned business. I personally like coming to joints like this. I don't mind that the ambiance is not all that. I don't mind that its no frills. I would definitely repeat and want to try other items on the menu including the fried stuff. read more

My coworkers were always talking about this place and I finally was able to try it. Don't let the area scare you, and the ambience influence your thoughts. But this place is what it is, a quick service seafood place. The menu is simple and easy to understand. The prices are low. The portion size is filling. We ordered the fish & shrimp combo platter. It comes with 3 pieces of breaded fried fish, 5 breaded shrimps, bed of fries ( you can choose rice pilaf or brown rice instead), and coleslaw. We also order the chicken and fish plate. The chicken had BBQ sauce on it (it was a quarter piece), and 3 pieces of breaded fried fish, coleslaw, and fries. They had sauces on the side tartar sauce, shrimp cocktail, Louisiana hot sauce, and lemon wedges. We are fans of clam chowder so we ordered theirs, it's missing like some type of seasoning in it, but the chowder consistency Is there. 10/10 would recommend, I would come back. They are efficient during this take-out only period of life right now, they get their orders and push them out fast. They also do Postmates. This particular Catch, while a part of the franchise, is as far removed from its bretheren that you can get. As the owner proudly (and probably metaphorcally) proclaims, his is the "Original Catch." This location caters to a slightly more colorful clientele, including, from what I hear, the very territorial trucker crowd later in the day. Located in the heart of an ocean of seafood warehouses, (down the block from the dubiously named 'Fisherman's Seafood Outlet'), you will surely impress your loved one with your intimate knowledge of the authentic downtown cuisine. This place goes right to the top of my list of places to hit up if you are keeping value and quality in mind. The shrimp skewers are great, the shrimp cocktail good, and the specials always better than you should expect for the price. Plus they serve malt liquor! (For $10 you can get a combo plate, rice and slaw included, a shrimp cocktail plus an alcoholic beverage of your choice and still have enough quarters left for a couple loads of laundry.) Great little Seafood spot in DTLA. Have all different types of fish and also some barbecue. Strange mix but seems to work together. Only thing is it is right on the border of Skid Row. But good fresh fish at very reasonable prices. I tried the shrimp platter which came with 12 perfectly cooked shrimp in a crispy crunchy coating with french fries or rice and coleslaw, for $8. They also gave me a pork rib which was very tender. We'll be coming back for sure when I am in DTLA. read more

I was shooting at 6th and S San Pedro today. They didn't have food that I could eat - and I forgot most of my lunch that I had made for that very reason. So I Yelped food near me. I found that other seafood place on S Central then I walked there. My boyfriend said "be careful!" I said don't worry I haven't been in hair and makeup yet and I kinda fit right in. Plus I'm from Philly - Skid Row ain't got nothin' on North Philly. Anyway I got to that other seafood place and the line was really long. I had pretty much snuck off set and the clock was ticking. But what did I see in the distance? Catch 21! Made sure it had at least 4 stars and headed over. They were really nice inside and I loved the whole set up. I got grilled salmon and grilled shrimp. That's it. No rice, no sauce. I let them know that I'm on a medical diet. The cashier said he was sorry and was I sure I didn't want some coleslaw? I smiled said no thanks and ordered a LYFT while I waited. It came out quick and piping hot. I've been here a few times with my fellow co workers who introduced me to this place. They have good prices for a good amount of food, I enjoy their salmon fillet but it could use a bit of seasoning. I tried their fried shrimp and I was not a fan then again I don't really enjoy breaded and fried shrimp or fish so i did not enjoy the fish n chips either. I do however really like their clam chowder soup! its tasty, hearty, and filling and for $1.50 for a small bowl its a steal! I have yet to try their other choices such as the chicken. Parking lot for this place has room for a few cars and it is a sketchy neighborhood but there are plenty of people around during the day. If you're female, come here for lunch or with a group of friends who can be cool with the neighborhood. Catch 21 DOES have a private parking lot (which helps with parking) but if you're uncomfortable with gritty areas of downtown -- Caveat emptor. I had a blended, tasty Thai iced tea, the catch of the day (grilled Tilapia) and the french fries*. My boyfriend also ordered the Tilapia with rice (instead of fries) and a side order of calamari. Both of our fish was really good. Tender, flaky, not too dry. Squeeze a little lemon on it, maybe a dash of hot sauce (if you find lemon too bland), and good to go! The french fries were nicely crunchy on the outside, and tender in the middle. But the rice was seasoned minute rice, so nothing to write home about there. The calamari was overdone, and my boyfriend ended up peeling about half the breading off, so he could have some calamari with his breading. On the whole, I'd come back here for the fish... but I'd check out some other seafood places near here first. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was just OK. The fact the fish was so good keeps the place from being a 2-star review. I've been coming to Catch 21 for a number of years now. This place is my go to spot when I'm in LA for a quick seafood meal. I always get the Fish n Chips. The Fish is supper yummy. Not oily nor dry. It has nice crunch to it. The chips are really good as well. Not oily what so ever. It also comes with a side of cold slaw which is also really good. The only thing that I would say is bad is the location. It's in the middle of skid row. But I don't look at it that way because I've been coming here for so long now that It just doesn't bother me. I can see that being a turn off for some but give it a try at least once. You can just pick up the food and go. read more

First time here and decided to give it a try! I read the reviews of people raving about the coleslaw and I was curious. I ordered the charbroiled salmon and seabass and they were both delicious! They came with coleslaw, rice & tartar sauce. Let me just say that the coleslaw is amazing. I usually don't prefer to eat coleslaw because it's very sweet, but this one was different! The flavor was immaculate. The rice had some veggies in it and it was super good as well. The tartar sauce added a nice kick when eaten with the fish. The food here is good, the prices here are amazing. They often have specials, so you can order salmon, rice or fries, and cole-slaw for $6, I almost fell over the first time I came here. Also they have the cheapest Heineken I've seen. It's great on a hot day. For $9.05 I got a small diet coke, small clam chowder and a half chicken platter with a baked potato on the side...and slaw. The chowder was alright, nothing spectacular. The chicken was smokey and had a delicious bbq sauce on it. The slaw was really good too- and Im not really a slaw kinda gal. Everyone around me had fish platters. May Day and I had to run errands downtown. I realized that I was just blocks away from this great fish place. A few turns and I was walking down Skid Row- and I noticed some familiar looking ficus trees and I realized that this was where that homeless man was shot by police. Abject poverty just blocks from city hall. I didn't see the mayor there, no protesters either. Just a crisis. And I arrive at the fish place- quite clean and- by 2 pm, not too busy. Got the chowder, the garlic roll, and the fish. The fish was perfect, not too oily, crisp, surprisingly light, perfect with salt and pepper. The chowder was good, but I've made better (where the spoon sticks vertically because of all the cream, potatoes, and clams). The garlic roll is basically a Kaiser Roll spread with garlic butter and griddle fried. Great conception, but not too impressed. All for $10. Pretty good. Definitely get the fish. Walking back to Little Tokyo Station, I am confronted by a sea of marchers protesting for workers and against police brutality, among other things. Lots of students- high school age, skipping school and marching and not realizing what they're there for. I know a few. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the prices were downright cheap for seafood in this part of town. And then I was even more surprised by how delicious the food was.
