    Tostada de Jaiba
    Ewa M.

Imagine Sunday sunny morning, when you wake up completely hang over, thirsty with a headache. You don't feel like eating at all, but your stomach calls for some attention after all that drinking you've done last night. You're lying in your bed picturing what food would satisfy your curious state of body and mind...then, you think of Mariscos, then you think of Colima, a local LA chain of sea food joints. BINGO. You quickly get dressed in whatever you it's on your hand and make your way to the nearest Colima location. You order Cocktail de Camarones (Shrimp Cocktail) or Tostada de Jaiba (Tostada with Crab), or any other sea food tostadas mixtas. They also have great sea food caldos (soups) and pescados (fish). Plus you can order original Coca Cola, echa en Mexico. Then you sit outside this small hut and enjoy local flavor of the neighborhood. Straight ahead you see Griffith Park Observatory and Hollywood sign, and yet, you feel suspended in time and place. You can proceed to buy a huge avocado on the street corner. You can even bring your other food from neighboring places, nobody cares. Suddenly, your cocktail arrives and you proceed to prepare it by adding ketchup, tapatio, lemon, salt, and you can add more avocado on your pleasure. The cocktail comes with tostadas or crackers, both of them have a salty taste and go delightfuyl with the rest of the food. As you take a first sip of delicious cocktail juice, the freshness and flavorness cures your hang over, and as you are finished with it, you feel extremely satisfied. The day has just began....I wish there was many more days like this!

This is a very quaint family owned business. I love their ceviche tostada. I actually like the shrimp cocktail and tostada as well, the only con is they don't devein the shrimp. Normally I wouldn't even consider eating shrimp that weren't deveined, but the seafood does taste fresh! I have said I would try one of their plates but I haven't yet. I've also seen people eating the soup. I go here twice a week for lunch with coworkers. If you're looking for a quick bite to eat with little frills and a homey feel, this is the place for you!

First off, the all you can eat is a set basket of food, meaning you get mussels, shrimp, clams, crawfish, potatoes, garlic noodles, corn and their daily basket. You cannot pick you are forced to get all these items. Whatever, not that big of a deal but really not great. The price is 38.99 a person, okay got it. It takes them so long...so long!! Just for us to order, a bit disappointed honestly. The food arrives decently fast. I dig in, Mama B is hungry y'all! The shrimp is cheap, okay. Small, fishy, rubbery Walmart type of shrimps. The corn plasticy, cheap and just disgusting. The potatoes, poorly cooked and under seasoned. The clams... no notes. Now at this point Mama B is scared y'all...I wasn't trying to get food poisoning. I'm disappointed, honestly the most flavourless seafood boil I have ever had the displeasure of eating. What's horrifying is the bill was $91...$91!!!! I feel like this math is just not mathing. I believe the tax is ridiculously high and possible charged for water cups? I really truly could've made a mean Walmart seafood boil for a cheaper price, that'd actually be seasoned... Not Mama B approved, go elsewhere.

I loved the perilla leaves as wrapped for the squid and the cooking presentation when the server torched the squid. The only few drawbacks were the vents weren't strong enough at our table, the potato was overcooked/charred, and the shrimp were really tough to peel. There is a combo order of both, but it includes the American marinated crab and an extra small live uni. With their recommendation, we opted for the Korean marinated crab and small uni to share with 2 adults and one kid. When the food came out, they gave us another live uni on the house and I was so happy because I didn't want to share mine! The food was so homey and delicious. The seafood pajeon was so loaded with all the seafood bits and the soy bean soup was the perfect palette cleanser. Service was great and they were so helpful to answer any questions we had. The marinated crab was very delicious, and spicy crab was even better, but the marinated crab is definitely higher quality, so if you want to get the best of both worlds order both or get the combo. When we finished ordering, appetizers came immediately and basically covered the whole table, and as a Korean restaurant with such warm hospitality I assume you can get more side dishes if you want, but we didn't want to waste any food. All dishes tasted great. The uni wasn't very surprising but it's still good, so if you are doing à la carte you can skip it. All in all a 5+ for the restaurant, also the restroom seems pretty clean so it's another plus for this smallish restaurant.

Sadly, no luck, both were quite briny with the ME ones slightly less so. The peel n eat prawns were good... but $7 a pop good? Not sure. Chowder was shockingly delicious and full of clam meat and potatoes. I might like this one more than the Hog Island chowder which has been my favorite for a long while. The scallop tostada and Sicilian crudo (halibut, salmon, scallop) were both fine but the fish & scallop tasted not super fresh? Not bad or anything, just kept getting a whiff of something fishy in both dishes. We didn't like the bread as much as we thought (fairly strong charred flavor and doesn't have a pillowy chew). Cousins Francisco Aguilar and Alexis Chacon relocated from Oaxaca to open this mobile mariscos operation. But Simon's seafood-forward menu is innovative and sophisticated, seemingly more at home in a sit-downery than a mobile food cart. Unsurprisingly, Simon has been lauded by news outlets and food critics abound. I've been dying to try Simon, but the limited and often unpredictable hours have kept me from it for months. My partner and I visited for a late weekend lunch and ordered immediately. We opted for 2 tacos (the Soft Shelled Crab and the Baja-style Fish) and a Large Aguachile Negro, and our made-to-order meal was prepared within a few minutes. Between the tacos, the crab was a clear winner. The crispy, whole crab was well-complemented by the fresh pineapple salsa and the rich chipotle crema. In stark contrast, the Baja-style fried fish was one-dimensional in flavor and ran on the soggy side, owing to the watery pickled cabbage slaw. But not even the crab taco could compete with the stellar aguachile. We couldn't get enough of the marinade's rich blend of acidity and smokiness, which overshadowed even the generous helping of fresh shrimp. Simon's complimentary salsa lineup also exceeded expectations. We most enjoyed the earthy salsa macha and the smooth, creamy salsa verde, but the tangy salsa Simon -- the truck's take on taco sauce -- was no slouch, either. Our bill totaled just over $30, and the meal felt reasonably priced and appropriately filling. While the tacos didn't knock my socks off, the aguachile certainly did -- I can't wait to return to try some of Simon's other varieties.
