Arrived at a time in the afternoon before dinner time & got my usual Fried Scallops with Rice Pilaf & a side order of coleslaw all for $13 tax included. The scallops came out not greasy with ample breading. A great value.

It's literally across the street from another super popular and fisted seafood restaurant, Fisherman's Outlet. I remember we had to wait for our food there and then had to snipe a table in the blinding sunlight. Here, maybe like 2 parties ahead of us and plenty of seating. Not bad! Though, in comparison with such a heavy hitter down the street, this location was just alright. If you just want seafood ASAP, it works, but if you want something higher quality and taste, it's not quite there or maybe we ordered the wrong things. We got the: 1) Shrimp and Crab Ceviche: -Kinda pricy for what it is. Small bits of shrimp and crab in it, but it mostly was like a super watery tomato salsa. Nothing like other places that I've gotten ceviche from and I would rather just boil this into a soup. Big skip. 2) Fried Fish and Shrimp: -Pretty generous plate of fried fish and shrimp. Breading is a bit thick and dry and the moistness of the shrimp and fish was inconsistent with some tasting a bit dry and rubbery and others being perfect. Not sure if different batches were mixed in. Definitely needed lots of lemon and sauce (tartar and cocktail) for this. 3) Fish Burger: -Standard fish burger with some lettuce. Regular sesame bun. Just imagine grabbing the fried fish from the fish dishes and slapping it in between some buns. Again, a bit dry and needed sauce, so we just dipped it into the ceviche. LOL. Overall, just an alright experience.

I ordered to go and I had fish & chips and clam chowder. The food here isn't bad. The fish was crispy and you can't go wrong with fish & chips. I enjoyed the clam chowder too. Ordered 1 salmon plate with 1 calamari and 1 shrimp side on 4/26/25. Order just arrived, I took one fried shrimp out, bit it and was IMMEDIATELY grossed out to see a human hair in the container with the other shrimp. ALL FOOD has been thrown away as the evidence of unsanitary food preperation with that one hair took away my appetite. Definitely never ordering from this place again.

The restaurant was on a closed route due to the cicLAvia bicycle event. I always wanted to stop by and try the food. I was surprised there weren't any bicycles parked outside the restaurant because most establishments are slammed with bicyclists along the route. The outside seating area is dirty and smelled like piss. Since I was already here I went in and checked out the menu and picked out a large bowl of clam chowder. The soup was good but nothing out of this world. They had a steady flow of walk in customers but no bicyclists while I was there. Removing one star for dirty patio area and another star for not so fresh crackers.

Catch 21 is my favorite place to eat while working downtown near skid Row. They have the best deal on seafood. My favorite meal is the grilled sole fish on a bed of rice, something like pilaf rice, and a cup of mango lemonade. The fish is always fresh. Location is everything. So, in this case, Catch 21 is on the fringe of the Los Angeles skid row epidemic. This restaurant is not where you want to go for a romantic date. But if you want an excellent old-fashioned fresh fish, lunch or dinner, this is your place. The serving portions are also very generous. And it's a reasonable price too. This family-run business is the best option for the seafood lover on a budget. Tell them Omar sent you. Bon appétit.

The food was good. It was made fast and hot. There's a lot of foot traffic and I came around lunchtime and had no problem finding parking. It's very open and fresh and the employees are very kind and professional definitely seems like a family owned business you would want to support.

A friend asked me to take him here for fish and shrimp. Being totally transparent, if I had walked in there I would have walked out. The place was packed and for that reason I guess they don't focus on table cleanup. Since I wasn't paying I figured I would give them a try. My only condition was that we take this TO GO! I will say that it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I think the condition of the restaurant overshadowed the food experience. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating has too many birds swooping for food off the table. Will I go back ? Ummm probably not. Metered parking is available on the street out front.

Had a taste for seafood so rolled over to check them out on lunch break. The place was packed but the line moved fast and the orders were coming out quickly. Menus on the wall included specials, combos individual items and sides. The prices were decent, $25 for 2 combos. Not the tidiest place but clear from the crowd this was a neighborhood favorite spot in the community and with city workers. There are booths and tables inside and the same outside. I ordered the Fries Shrimp & Catfish combo with fries. The shrimp were mid sized, cooked golden brown. The fish strips were thin and flat., I prefer more seasoning and flavor but both were all right, the cocktail and hot sauce made it all better.

I ordered the fried fish and shrimp combo on Uber eats. The food was tasty and flavorful, that's why gave it 3 stars. But that's it. My food came like warm, probably because it was made already and wasn't made fresh and they just threw it in a container to go. The fish was sooo tough. It wasn't soft and neither was the shrimp. They seemed over cooked. It almost felt like I was eating some kind of chicken. It was very dry. And I've eaten here before and I really like the food. Just not today. read more

Worst fish place I've been to in my life. Didn't even eat 30% of my meal. Was going to go back and ask for a refund but the customer service was already abysmal I didn't want to lose my patience walking back in there. Please never go here. It's not worth ordering a side of fries at this piece of shit establishment. read more

This place was good for a quick bite during lunch with decent prices for LA. You also get a free clam chowder if you follow them on insta. You also go to hell if you unfollow them afterwards. Just saying. I got the catch of the day with rice pilaf. I honestly don't remember what the catch of the day was but it was a fish I never heard of. I posted a photo of my meal so if anyone can tell me what fish I ordered email me at Sephiroth69 at gmail or something. My email is not the makeup store. We decided to eat at a bench outside and it was breezy and it was a nice day. Our lunch was cut short by a shrieking woman across the street in her tent. I think catch 21 should provide the patrons with ear plugs so we can't hear the shrieking woman across the street. Or maybe play some ambient music of the beach so I can pretend I'm in Cambodia while eating fish. read more

Food taste like nothing like no seasoning they just threw the fish on the grill with no seasoning no flavor. Very blend I wasted $ 30 on this I threw whole meal in the trash and after I had to buy another meal I will definitely not recommend any one to eat there . I got the grilled shrimp with grilled sea bass and half fries and half rice the fries no seasoning. And I ordered a clam chowder soup on the side and that tasted horrible like how do you make clam chowder nasty? I went here on my break and wasted time. Wasted my whole break. read more

Visited this place yesterday, I went inside to use the restroom. The facility is disgusting. I could not even eat my food after going into the restroom. So dirty and not to mention the smell in there is unbearable. Just by seeing how they upkeep the restroom made me question how clean they are. Never going back again. read more

Combo number 3 which includes barbecue chicken, pork ribs, and beef rib with coleslaw, 50-50 rice and french fries is pretty good. I just make sure you have lots of napkins. read more

Food was really good here which we had ordered for take out. Placing the order was very simple and the staff were very nice and helpful. Ordered charbroiled salmon with rice and it was delicious. Same quality and taste as Fisherman's Outlet, but not ridiculously expensive. Glad I tried this place. Definitely would recommend this restaurant. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because outdoor seating needs to be updated. read more

Even after a few years, the taste and serving of their food still remain the same. Now that is consistency!! This is our favorite go to seafood every lent. Highly recommended. I do recommend coming here before 12noon or after 1pm coz this place do get really busy. But the workers are fast. They get your order right away. read more

Catch me @ Catch 21. My co-workers like going here. I am not a fan but I can eat the food. It is very inconsistent. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's just bleh. I got grilled salmon with fried clams combo for lunch. You have to pay extra for the salmon. I ate my salmon. I ate some of my clams. I stopped eating and was still hungry. So I went back to my car and ate my churros. 2.5 stars! Catch 21 is almost yummylicious!! read more

Catch 21 is my idea of the perfect quirky downtown place. Food is pretty good and pretty cheap. I like the scallops and shrimp over the rice....not crazy about their fish or their fries. For about $9 it is reasonable and they get the seafood in daily so it's fresh and tasty. Now just be prepared if you sit outside to have every woman hanging around outside offer you some num num....so that's a bit annoying. Most annoying thing and the reason the get 4 stars is no beer or alternative alcoholic beverages! Had a few offers to buy some medicinal smoke...but frankly none looked like a licensed practitioner...so took a pass. Aaaahhh....wishing you were here! read more

('',) Plus, they're open on Sundays! * Food: 3.5 stars - Clam chowder: took 1 bite and was done w/ the soupy chowder. - Fried Shrimps & Fish only: fresh and crispy shrimp and fish, but didn't care for the breaded batter. - Orange roughy w/ cajun seasoning and lemon: good flavoring, but the fish was a bit rough--literally. The rice pilaf w/ veggies was good, and so was the mini order of coleslaw. * Price: pretty good for seafood. We spent about $20 for all the food mentioned above. * The SCENE: 2 stars(it's a 'sketchy place'---not suitable for everyone) - plenty of seating inside and outside - plenty of parking spots in their private parking lot - several panhandlers in the area---we even saw one panhandler taking a seat right next to a family and interrupting their meal. yikes. - as we were leaving the parking lot, another man conveniently takes a whiz out in the open. gross. *Just sit inside the place to enjoy your meal if you don't want to deal w/ any interruptions. Overall: the seafood was better quality than the one I went to in Northridge. However, I'm personally done w/ Catch 21. I prefer my fish and chips to be coated w/ beer batter instead of bread crumbs. Catch 21 has some great shrimp, fish, and chips for a great value. For less than $8, I had a great meal that filled me up. The fries are pretty good - they remind me of the fries you'd get at burger king. The fish and fried shrimp are pretty good and you can get ample sauce and lemon. Everything here is freshly frozen, so don't expect to have sashimi grade stuff here. This is also not a place for a date as it's not far removed from Skid Row. But, overall, it's a great place to have your fill of seafood and it isn't expensive. Their grilled seafood isn't bad either. It's worth giving it a shot if you happen to be in the area. Because it isn't the best area, definitely come for lunch rather than dinner. read more

This place was absolutely horrible, I ordered the shrimp plate, the fires were under cooked and cold the shrimp had no flavor in fact that shrimp tasted old. I also ordered "homemade lemonade I never received it. I reported that I was missing my lemonade. Definitely not worth buying! read more

Classic downtown grub. Start with the neighborhood. Horrible by every definition. Next, comes the parking lot. Lots of spaces, being privately owned. Look out the window before opening your door or you may be hit up for change from a local homeless dude. Don't worry, though. There are always cops, plainclothes and uniformed eating here. Now you walk in and look at a very extensive menu all based around fresh fish. Keep in mind that this is in the heart of the fish district. There are seafood processing houses around every corner. The quality is very good and very fresh. Lots of choices of grilled fish plates. I always pick the mixed seafood skewer and chicken skewer on a plate of rice. The guy at the counter screaming into the microphone "chicken and seafood arroz!!" A bit of old L.A. The place is scarier than hell but is really quite safe and the food is fresh, affordable and tasty. read more

Dirty disgusting place people always say it's similar to the fisherman's outlet across the street but I went here the other day because fishermen outlet was closed and it looks very dirty inside and out restrooms were disgusting they let the homeless use them I definitely lost appetite after I had already ordered just from looking around at the environment of the inside the place I know it's not sanitary so I gave the food away and I definitely won't be back ever again read more

Tried this for the first time using Post Mates. I ordered the Salmon and it was delicious! It was a really good size portion and came with rice, cole slaw and Tartar sauce (really good). Salmon was good and wasn't "fishy". The coleslaw was good but had a lot of mayo but didn't mind as much. T Will definitely be ordering again. A+ read more

Cash or debit card only.. I had high hopes for this based on the reviews but I've had better fried fish at Filipino seafood markets where they fry fish for you and it' cheaper. Ordered a tilapia plate and combo seafood plate (calamari, fish and shrimp). Both were ok. Maybe we should've ordered something grilled to try other things on the menu, maybe we would have had better luck. read more

Simply put DONT eat here. The reviews and and the pictures are deceiving. They said the fish is red snapper.... No it is not and It lacks seasoning. I should have known but the looks of the surrounding area that this was a hard pass. read more

Clam chowder was hella bomb . I didn't mind the whole restaurant dirty but the employees there were nice and the food was good . Not a lot of people go here but it is Lowkey. They also serve beer for 3$ which is a good deal !! Other places would charge 5$ or more this is the spot for seafood ! read more

Atmosphere is kinda disgusting but they actually make pretty good food. You won't find more affordable BBQ or seafood anywhere else in Downtown LA. Their burgers are pretty danm delicious. Their menu selection is decent and affordable great prices for being a Downtown location it is in the skid row area so yeah there's that. Overall apart from the rift raff good food at an affordable price. read more

I love this place! It's reasonably priced, and the food is always on point. Their fish and chips are always perfect. The coating they have for fried items us simple but delicious. If you dont do fried food, they have grilled items that are awesome. The salmon portion is HUGE! Their beef ribs are also must try. If you are one of those people who hate the poor, this spot is not for you... this is a skid row spot, with diners of all walks of life. Show some respect to the community. Food is always pretty fast, so no long waits. They also serve beer and wine by the can or bottle... and they have orange bang on tap! read more

We started with the oyster sampler featuring selections from Hollywood, MD; Pope's Bay, VA; Buzzards Bay, MA; Chesapeake Bay, VA; and Wellfleet, MA. The oysters were exceptionally fresh and served with great accompaniments. We always order oysters when visiting seafood restaurants because freshness is so important to us, and Water Grill absolutely delivered. A must-order. The grilled Spanish octopus, served with fingerling potatoes, Niçoise olives, roasted tomato, pine nuts, and olive oil, was very good (3.5/5). We're fairly picky when it comes to octopus, and while we would have liked a bit more char, it was still among the better versions we've had. The New Zealand king salmon sushi with avocado, hazelnuts, papaya, and white soy-lime vinaigrette was fresh, clean, and delicious (5/5). While not particularly unique, it was executed perfectly. The crispy calamari with harissa aioli and cilantro-mint sweet chili sauce was also well done (4/5)--crispy, not oily, and very enjoyable. Calamari is another dish we frequently order, and this version met our standards, even if it wasn't especially memorable. The standout among the appetizers was the New Zealand pink bream ceviche with cilantro, red peppers, onions, lemon juice, and olive oil. The presentation was beautiful, and the flavors were incredibly fresh (5/5). We only added a touch of salt. This is another must-order dish. The Peruvian bay scallops with pistachio citrus pesto were somewhat underwhelming (3/5), and the Brussels sprouts with bacon and chestnuts (3/5) didn't leave much of an impression either. The lobster itself was excellent (5/5)--sweet, fresh, and perfectly prepared. The accompanying coleslaw wasn't our favorite, but we'd happily order the lobster again and probably go for a larger portion next time. The absolute star of the evening was the Massachusetts black sea bass. It was easily one of the best dishes of the night and possibly one of the best fish dishes we've ever had at a restaurant (5/5). Tender, juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. To top it all off, the restaurant surprised us with a complimentary birthday dessert featuring chocolate cake, vanilla cake, oatmeal cake, and ice cream. It was thoughtful, delicious, and a wonderful ending to the meal (5/5). Overall, Water Grill earns a well-deserved 5/5. The quality and freshness of the seafood were outstanding, the beachfront ambiance was beautiful, and the service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. Definitely a must-try seafood destination in Los Angeles. Thank you to the entire team for such a memorable experience--we truly appreciated it.

Mariscos Jalisco is best known for their Fried shrimp tacos however, they have one of the best aguachiles I've tasted hands down. Their shrimp tacos are absolutely amazing with the right crunchiness and soft fried shrimp inside. The sauce that comes with these tacos are jam packed with flavor adding to the overall flavors/texture of the shrimp taco. Hurts to say it but this might be my new favorite shrimp taco in ELA/Boyle Heights area. The service here is quick and friendly. I went on a Friday afternoon and did not find busy crowds at this food truck. Street parking is available and the times that i've visited other food trucks nearby i was able to find quick parking. Its a busy street so you will find people coming in and out of parking spots most of the time. I enjoyed my experience here at Mariscos Jalisco and will be coming back very soon. The seafood pajeon was so loaded with all the seafood bits and the soy bean soup was the perfect palette cleanser. Service was great and they were so helpful to answer any questions we had. They were all delicious but the stand outs were the beef noodle soup and the popcorn chicken. Also stayed for dessert which we got the mochi, peanut and black sesame. I liked the black sesame slight more. We also tried both of the shave ice and it was refreshing despite of being slightly too sweet.

I recently visited Catch 21 in downtown LA, hoping to relive some nostalgic memories from 30 years ago. While the food had its highs, the overall experience left much to be desired. First, let's talk about the food. The #1, #2, and #3 combos : the fried shrimp and rice were particularly impressive--crispy, flavorful, and satisfying shrimp 5/5 and rice 2/5. The fried scallops were good, getting a 4/5, and the fried fish was also tasty, warranting a 4/5 as well. However, the fries fell flat, coming in at a disappointing 2/5. My husband and I weren't fan of the Cole slaw either maybe a 2/5 but we only tasted it and didn't eat it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. We also tried the clam chowder, which was more like potato soup with very few clams in it--definitely not what I was hoping for, so that gets a 2/5. Now, onto the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this is where things took a turn. The place felt dirty, and I was taken aback when I saw a roach walking around outside. There were also a number of homeless individuals around the establishment, which made me and my dining companions feel unsafe during our visit. Service was a 5/5 very nice young man in front and the food was ready fast. Overall, while the food had its standout moments, the cleanliness and safety of the environment significantly detracted from the experience. I wish I could say I'd return, but given the current state of the place, I think I'll be looking for other options in downtown LA. read more

I've been here many times over the past 15 years. It's the "other" restaurant (besides Fisherman's Outlet) in The Seafood District. It's the one with the smaller menu, lower prices and shorter crowds/wait times. It's also the closer of the two to Skid Row. Due to the immediate proximity to perhaps the most hard core and entrenched homeless people community in the USA, the atmosphere suffers accordingly. If you dare to try to sit outside (especially on the east side) you're likely to be panhandled, or asked for food. At best you're probably going to be subjected to cigarette smoke. These hazards come with the territory. Atmosphere aside, the quality (freshness, preparation, portion size) of the food (especially seafood) is excellent. There is no better value to be found in Los Angeles. (it also comes out fast - almost always in under 10 minutes) The plastic silverware isn't worthy of the food. I try to bring my own silverware if I'm planning on eating there (and of course anything fried is going to lose most of its quality by the time you get it home). read more

When I worked close by, I have to admit this was my favorite place to eat. Sure, maybe it wasn't the healthiest choice, but man, is it good - usually. What would I recommend? What couldn't I recommend, it looks like they do it all! But my personal favorite is the Cheeseburger and half order of shrimp combo. How did I come upon this dish? Well, with a regular burger and fries order, the fires are fried in the same oil as the shrimp and fish are, so naturally their flavor are absorbed by the fries. It only took one or two trips to ask for shrimp as well. You may not think that sounds so appetizing, and many coworkers at first laughed at my order - but eventually everyone had ordered it and agreed, and it was good! Another personal favorite was the Tuna Sandwich - again with the fries (no shrimp this time!). Just an awesome portion and great value. I joke that what don't they offer, but with their shake machine, taro drinks, seafood and steaks, really, what don't they offer? Check it out, just avoid it after dark. read more

I prefer grilled fish versus fried and they have plenty of both. I originally ordered the sea bass but they were sold out. The black tiger shrimp is delicious! the char-grilled sole sandwich came with fries and a small,small side of coleslaw. This place serves really good seafood that is quick, yummy, and won't break the bank. It tastes fresh and is always really good! I usually get the salmon salad or the fish and chips and they give you really decent portions and I always leave satisfied.
