In the late 80's I worked in the garment district in DTLA and I had lunch at Catch 21 at least twice a week. It was good. A typical DTLA lunch place in those days (the whole Arts District thing was not a thing yet) good food, great price and outdoor patio seating that was reminiscent of high school. I recently moved to Echo Park and discovered that Catch 21 was still serving and I could get it delivered (GrubHub), so I gave it a try. All I can say is wow - nothing has changed - the prices are great, the quality is consistent delicious and the delivery times are quick. So here I am 30+ years later and I am having Catch 21 about once a week, but this time for dinner. It is really a fantastic choice. I love it, all over again! read more

I want to like this place. Apparently they give back to the community, the prices seem good, and the choices seem solid. Sadly, not the case. The beef ribs are pretty cheap. You get three for #10. These aren't those glorious smoked ribs from a Texas style BBQ place, but I never expected that. It tastes fine. However, it's not very meaty and the meat on there is pretty tough and sinewy still. There's a caveman fantasy that comes out with beef ribs (or turkey legs) as you grab the bone and tear at the meat. Sadly, this is a bit too literal. The tearing required is amazing. Imagine taking a goat shank, searing the ends, and immediately digging in. It's that kind of tough. The BBQ sauce is a bit sweet and the crispiness is kind of nice. Keep dental floss handy. Fried fish was good. Nicely golden, tasty batter, and the rice pilaf has some good flavor to it. The star. Shrimp cocktail was odd. You get some shrimp and some tortilla chips. However the shrimp are just in a bath of salsa. I don't what to say. Mexican style cocktails have tomatoes and cilantro and such, and so does salsa so they're the same? I guess I'm gonna bake my cakes with mayonnaise because it's oils and eggs. Clam chowder reminds me of those diners that have a soup of the day to be fancy and Friday is chowder night. More potato than clam. Gummy from the flour. Is it so tough to ask for a seafood restaurant to make me a chowder that isn't on par with the late-night greasy spoon? At least at those spots, you might get a waitress who immediately pours a cup of coffee and asks "the usual, Hon?" The shrimp and crab salad actually made me upset. The crab is fake. It's krab. Or crab stick. It boggles my mind that seafood restaurants use fake crab. Usually at least they tell you. As an aside to this rant, I keep finding mariscos places with fake abalone. This is just as confusing. Charge me more dollars and give me real crab (even tinned would be an improvement). Or just tell me the crab is fake so I know not to order. I paid extra for both shrimp and crab and I get the fake stuff. Also you get a container of ranch. No choices available, at least via the apps. They get three stars. Why not two? Probably the prices, to be honest. Even if the dinner wasn't great at least I didn't feel like someone cut my wallet out of my pocket. read more

O.M.G. Really can't believe I haven't eaten here before. We ordered here, through Postmates, on a Friday night. We were craving some refreshing food and charbroiled fish sounded perfect. Ordered a plate of Cajun salmon, swordfish, side of deep fried fish and the shrimp cocktail. The plates come with a side of coleslaw and flavored rice. Our food arrived quickly, within 30 minutes. The food was carefully packed so nothing spilled. They supplied us with lots of tartar sauce, hot sauce (tasted like buffalo sauce!), sliced lemons, and cocktail sauce. The plates were AMAZING. We completely devoured them. We weren't too impressed with the side dishes - shrimp cocktail came as a ceviche with chips and was somewhat bland. The side of shrimp, for $5, was not worth the price. Pandemic info: (Aug 2020) they have plexiglass shielding with employees all wear masks. They do NOT enforce mask rules inside their establishment nor social distancing. Because this is a rough part of town, this is highly problematic and you are at a high risk of catch coronavirus here because of it. You have some customers yapping away like they are the boss on their cell phones or at the employees while in your faces about it. I have ordered a couple times from the virtual restaurant BBQ Taing associated with this establishment. I really like their pork ribs and seabass. The hot sauce is a nice tangy hot sauce and the condiments come in nice little plastic containers that you can reuse for some arts and crafts project. The food I usually get is nice and warm but the downside is the melted styrofoam. It tells me that the food was hot when it was packaged but I don't want to think about the chemicals and the occasional hole in the containers. read more

My go to spot for a quick lunch . It's at the beginning of skid road technically but the food is good fairly priced and pretty filling portions. It's usually busy for lunch hour .At first the ambiance feels sketchy but it's really safe place there's always police and the restaurant allows for a peaceful place to sit and eat food or even drink beers if that's your choice. It's a hidden seafood gem definitely fesh tasting food . I love their rice pilaf with shrimp skewers or fried fish n chips is always a great option. This time they had really cool boxes for the fries that i got for my son. I also had carrot cake for dessert it wasn't great a little too sweet for my taste but it was a good compliment to end my lunch. There was plenty of parking in front during my visits, even during peak lunch time hours. THE BAD ------------- Their smoked chicken is as dry as cardboard, and equally palatable. The cashier left his station, followed the person outside and proceeded to FIGHT, YES! I couldn't believe it. I'm not a person that pulls out the camera and record. While they were fighting another person handed me my food. I got my food and took off. The person was returning while still speaking foul language. I got home and inspected my food and was Totally Dissapointed! the french fries were dark as if they has been sitting out for a long time then refried, the fish and shrimp was hard and looked same as the french fries. Mind you, this is just at 11AM. I ended up just eating the Crab salad and tossed the rest of the food in the trash. MONEY TOTALLY WASTED!! This place should not be open for business at all!. I just had the best experiences enjoying a love plate of Sea Bass Charbroiler. The plate was enough for 2 people. The fish was perfectly grilled to perfection. In my combo I got 2 nice size pieces of fish, homemade coleslaw, and your choose of fries or rice pilaf. The staff was very nice and great customer service. Oh, by the way the tarter sauce was equally wonderful as well. The menu offers various items for anyone, so going here with picky group should not be a problem. They will allow you to place an order and pick as well which is really nice cause if you need to be back to work or etc. One of my favorite things about this place is that THEY HAVE THERE OWN PARKING! I hate eating out downtown area but when k got there to pick up order and saw that they have parking. Priceless!!!
