Years after having Catch recommended to us, we finally came in after getting the stamp of approval from a friend. She recommended sitting at the bar, so we did just that, and it was such a good choice. It was really fun to watch them cook and get to chat with the owner while he did so. We asked the owner what he recommended, and the calamari appetizer was his highlight. We started with that, and it was great. While everything else in the meal was also really good, this was the highlight and I'd absolutely get it again and again. For mains we got the scallop and scampi pasta over pasta and the trio fish plate special. Narrowing it down to these two wasn't easy since everything on the menu sounded good. I would get both items again, but will probably get something else next time just to try more of the menu. We came in right as they opened on a weekday evening, so we had the place to ourselves to start. It did start to fill in fairly quickly, so I would imagine it gets crowded on weekends. read more

So Catch really surprised my group and I. We were recommended this restaurant by multiple people we know and after reading so many of the rave reviews we all became very excited to try it. Now I know we didn't sit at the bar like everyone says you have to but I'm sorry, even if we had, no one's personality can make up for the complete lack of flavor from every single dish we tried. We tried the calamari, the crab cakes, halibut, swordfish and cioppino. The calamari and the crab cakes may have been the most disappointing. The calamari was just a breaded fillet cut into strips with zero flavor or seasoning. The crab cakes were a sloppy mess and did not hold together at all, they just crumbled apart when you tried to eat it. They also didn't have a good flavor and were placed on a sad bed of raw spinach and topped with unmelted pre-shredded parm. Both looked as if you let your 8 year old make you something "all by themselves". The halibut was advertised with a florentine cream sauce. It literally tasted like nothing. No salt, no anything. The swordfish was supposed to have a spicy Veracruz sauce and that too was incredibly bland. Both dishes had the exact same vegetables on the plate, those were bland too but were better than the fish. The cioppino was served in a very cool little red cast iron pot but cioppino it was not. It had BROCCOLI and BRUSSELS SPROUTS and very small amounts of fish. The broth was very thin watery and slightly tomatoish taste but also lacked any amount of salt or seasoning. We forgot to take any photos but there are plenty already on here that match what I'm describing perfectly. Our server was completely average to poor, he may have forgotten about us. Once again, Catch Seafood Bar and Grill was AMAZING! We sat at the bar for an incredible experience with Chef Chico. We were treated to watching the chef's artfully prepare our anniversary dinner! We started with a delicious calamari steak appetizer followed by surf and turf...giant lobster tails with ribeye for hubby and filet mignon with Bernaise for me. Theresa served us with heartfelt hospitality that made us feel like we were dining in their home. We are already looking forward to our next visit. Late change in plans meant trying to find a dinner spot on Valentine's on Saturday night! Was trying all around north county and Catch called me back saying they had a cancellation and if I wanted it- "yes". Love the Catch and last night did not disappoint- we had a bottle of Glunz Chardonnay with Crab Cake appetizer to start- the. The shrimp scampi and shrimp Alfredo. Both were delicious and had lots of to satisfy our hunger. The staff are very attentive, refilling water and their breads. It's was early but packed for the occasion. WOW the clams are out of this world. After eating those clams and being shocked, appalled, in awe at how amazing they were, I started to look at every subsequent dish in a hopeful and forgiving lens. However, after the entire meal and looking back, I don't think the other dishes were that great. From BEST to LEAST recommendation: 1) red sauce steamed clams - MY GOSH. Deliciously savory but light and highlighter the flavor of the clam. I could drink this sauce but luckily they have delicious fluffy baguette bread that I could eat endlessly on that. 2) clear broth steamed clams - MY GOSH amazing. Same ordeal just different sauce. The herb garlic sauce was to die for with the flame, 3) The crab cakes looked a little sad but were SO fresh. Would recommend people to try at least once. Depending on my mood I may or may not get again. 3) the clam chowder was amazing but it was unconventional. Instead of the traditional creamy clam chowder, it was a savory herb more clear in broth chowder. I enjoyed it but I also would enjoy the traditional creamy chowder better. This was nice still because you could eat a lot of it and not feel heavy. 4) king crab legs were yummy and fresh. Still a little straight forward but they nailed it well: 5) shrimp and scallop fettuccine - it was ok. The scallops and shrimp weren't cooking anything exceptional and the fettuccine was doused in a light and simple garlic butter sauce 6) molten lava cake was straightforward and done well but not done exceptionally well or anything different 8) Oyster - they didn't clean them well (had a bad poopoo aftertaste) and they were a bit old/stale non fresh. Oh wow!!!! My wife is an incredible chef and rarely impressed when we go out. The bartenders at Clock and Dagger's wine tasting shop (2 different ladies, on two different days) both HIGHLY recommended Catch and both said we should sit at their bar. My wife doesn't usually like to watch cooking at a restaurant due to all of the negatives she can spot, but we did so. Chico the owner and head chef is the man! He greeted us promptly, is so friendly, the kitchen is spotless and then my wife looked at the menu. I've rarely seen her so excited! "Oh, that looks good! Oh, no, that does! Yum, I want that!" On and on. Then I pointed out the huge specials board and it started again!!! We settled on appetizers of clams Italinao and sauteed mushrooms. Both so good! I really don't like mushrooms, but I couldn't stop eating them! Regulars Scott and Cindy arrived a bit after us and they swapped some of our mushrooms for some of their calamari steak appetizer (OH WOW - THAT was so good too!). My wife went with salmon for an entree and it was some of the best she's ever had (and we cried that we didn't have a refrigerator in our hotel to take home the leftovers.). I had Ahi and it, too, was some of the best ever! And the veggies for our entree's side (broccoli, carrots and zucchini) was so good - I'd have THAT as an entree next time if I could!!! More regulars arrived and sat between us and Cindy/Scott and they were so friendly. Awesome vibe - everyone felt like friends and family and you could tell everyone LOVED Chico and staff. I would give this place 5 stars if it weren't for their reservation process. We called to inquire about a reservation, and they said they had nothing available at 5 or 4:30 but could squeeze us in at 4--right when they opened. We arrived and sat at the bar, where there was only one other couple. By the time we left at 5, there were two other couples and plenty of space. Not sure why they couldn't seat us at 5. The service was okay, but since they had just opened and were still getting organized, they weren't very attentive. Regarding the food... Wow! We were beyond satisfied with our meal. We ordered the Pan-Fried Calamari, a bowl of Clam Chowder, and a dinner salad. We had never had a calamari steak prepared this way before--it was delicious and left us wanting more! The clam chowder was amazing, packed with plenty of clams, potatoes, and celery. Yes, celery--it added a nice flavor to the soup. Came into catch after a day of wine tasting! It's a tiny spot, super intimate and tight quarters. This didn't bother us! Decent wine selection and although a small food menu it had everything you could need. I thought the rack of lamb was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The sides were just ok-not extraordinary, but ok! Place has a great reputation but from my experience just "meh". The service was excellent but the ambience was desultory and tired looking. I ordered the scallops in a linguine sauce. Candidly it was a tasteless watery goop....the scallops were fresh but were also tasteless and devoid of a sear or seasoning. I didn't look closely at my check until after leaving but noticed there was a charge for "potatoes " which is nowhere on the menu nor were they ordered. The bill is hand written which is a problem. Oysters, fish, scallops, shrimp + pasta and good local wines make Catch shine for us. It can be fun to eat at the bar, which overlooks the kitchen. But it gets crowded. Same with the table seating. Meals are robust, so we had great leftovers for lunch the next day, making just about all entrees affordable when you can get two meals from a plate full. Dinner with reservations. There was a group of us and we were very well taken care of. Nice bread service!! Huge portions, and overall very tasty dishes. I personally tasted the oysters rockefeller, seafood pasta, clam chowder, Arctic Char and all their desserts. My favorite was the seafood pasta. Tons of seafood over tons of linguini in a nice lemon butter garlicky sauce which needed a bit more salt. My favorite dessert was the lava cake by far. But the creme brûlée was also well done. We went to have our anniversary of our first date 19 yrs ago. We celebrated here last year. The rack of lamb was very disappointing. Looks like they took a hack saw to cut the chops. It tasted ok. But looked terrible. My husband had filet mignon. Tasted good. But it looked like they threw it on the plate. Very skimpy serving of veggies. For 42.00 it should look better. Staying at the Hotel Cheval (Amazing) for a few nights. The manager Renee* recommended "Catch" for dinner. It was Just an easy walk around the corner. We sat at the bar as also recommended. Chico the Owner / Chef was immediately welcoming and helpful with our order. We told him it was our first time, and he was incredible. A joy to watch in the kitchen, and treats his customers like family. I had the "Trio" of fish (Blackened Salmon, Sautéed Sea Bass, and Sand Dabs). Great presentation, and absolutely delicious. My wife had the Rack of lamb which was cooked perfectly. We were fortunate enough to sample the calamari steak, and I must say it's the best we've ever had (next time ). What a disappointment... I hate to leave this low star review since our last visit was nothing but amazing. So amazing that we made our reservation a week ahead to make sure that we can get out seats at the counter. We arrived several minutes ahead of our 7:30pm reservation. The place was pretty empty inside (only couple of tables were occupied) but as usual, the counter was full of customers except for 2 chairs open all the way at the end. I thought those were our seats? Maybe? Nope!!!! Right in front of our eyes, the hosts told another couple who were seated at a table to go ahead and they can move to those 2 counter seats. Then he found out that our reservation was at the counter (yellow highlighted on their book), and told us that we can take a table seating, or need to wait for at least 30-40 minutes for the counter depending on when the customer leaves. Doh! So we went to a restaurant nearby who had a more competent host. It is disappointing that chef and owner work hard to make this place so popular, but this kind of service would lose some loyal customers like us. read more

My husband is an east coast transplant and always jonesing for seafood. AND he's a seafood snob. So I was excited to check out this restaurant. When we arrived, they seated us right away-- it was loud and the tables were pretty close together. We'd had a big lunch so we decided to do all appetizers instead of main entrees. We ordered oysters on the half shell, they weren't shucked well, we really had to struggle to get them loose from the shell. And, the horseradish was so mild (old?) that we needed to use a huge dollop to get any flavor. The cocktail sauce tasted like ketchup. The mussels were overcooked and the broth was completely bland. It had great ingredients in the broth-- mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic--- but the broth literally tasted like flavored water -- and not even salted well. The sautéed mushrooms-- we expected a small portion of these since it's an appetizer-- it literally was an entree size dish of sautéed mushrooms-- which were absolutely delicious. The garlic, white wine and whatever else they used to create the sauce was really delicious. We also ordered shrimp cocktail but the waiter mustn't have heard - because we never got it, and weren't charged for it either. Given how many places there are in Paso -- we probably wont go back. read more

Yet another amazing dinner experience at Catch. Tonight my husband and I both had the Filet Mignon, he had his medium and I had mine medium well. Both were cooked to perfection. We enjoyed a lovely conversation with the owner and the cooking staff at the bar. The GSM wine called The Offering was tasty!
