A nice coffee house with a good selection of pastries and some sandwich-like items, but losing a couple of stars for the flying bugs swarming inside the food cases. After seeing a dozen plus of them in one case and 4 of them crawling around on a pastry in the front we got a response of 'yeah, they do that' ... how about laying down some fly paper in there or, I don't know, getting an exterminator to deal with the infestation? read more

Excellent coffee! Warm and cozy interior. They have a little book nook with a table and some comfy chairs if you just want to relax. The staff is super friendly and not at all snobby about their coffee. My only complaint is that the food prices are a little high. I was really excited to try the jam, but when I opened it, it was a runny mess. Sorely disappointed. I will definitely still return to try some of their other tasty selections though. read more

This is my all time favorite coffee place ever. Delicious coffee and pastries. Regular espresso drinks and drinks with hemp and almond milk. The staff is so friendly. I just love this place. It's cozy, it's close, and they have local art on the walls rotating and they have inventive brunches. *one request: please start carrying a buttery croissant (not Roman candle - there's are terrible) I wanted to especially call out how kind the staff is. Especially one woman who has repeatedly gone out of her way to help me. I'm sad to say I don't know her name, but she has olive skin and short brown hair. She has leant me her sweater when I've been cold and bumped my order to the front of the line when it was 'go without breakfast on a cold nasty day' or else... Such a cozy shop with a private room with two tops and a bench in front of a sunlit window. There are tons of communal tables good for large groups or a solo work spot. There are several calzone-type options but I got the butternut squash, bacon and gruyere quiche, which was such a win. I always test a coffee shop's coffee by their drip, and boy did it deliver. Visiting from San Diego, my bf and I were looking for a cute local spot to grab some coffee and breakfast on our way to walk through Forest Park. You can feel how warm and welcoming this place is from the moment you step inside. The food and coffee were amazing, and it was great to see how many local families stop in and chat with the staff. Everyone working was so sweet and provided excellent service. We even tried Aardvark hot sauce here for the first time and had to buy some at the airport to bring home. I will definitely return on future trips to PDX! read more

I feel like I'm in a anti-depressant commercial, a Glade commercial, a vaginal douche commercial. In a video of perfectly manicured lawns, where everything smells like vanilla and baby powder, and everyone is white, thin and "good-looking." This is not a place I ever want to be. Where the white light is so bright it turns everything to bland edge-less banality. You probably buy your spirituality at Free People and Archeologie. Your coffee is good. The physical space is interesting. The ride on Willamette from my house to your cafe is pleasant. I just wish I had noise cancelling head phones. read more

So far the pie hasn't been cherry which explains the absence of Agent Cooper, but the house blend is fantastic and the pie rivals what mom can bust out -- and that ol' gal can bake. I stopped in on my lunch break and the shop was pretty full. The line moved quickly and the barista was super friendly. I got an iced coffee and a chocolate chip banana bread slice. THE SLICE WAS HEAVEN. Naturally I had to use a fork and be fancy since that bread was so good. My friend got a tea, quiche and the sausage roll and absolutely loved it. I appreciate this so much! I know it's complicated. My feedback: twice I've visited and staff and labels don't seem to understand what gluten-free is. One day at Cathedral there was a "grain-free" item made of oatmeal (oatmeal = a gluten-free grain), another day a similar item was in the case and when I asked if it was gluten-free, the staff said no. My solution: Most of us who live GF understand a small sign that says: "not from a certified gluten-free kitchen" or other clear labels. I humbly request the kitchen adopt a term (Gluten-Free-Friendly?), put up a sign, and then teach all the baristas what's up so those of us who are Portland clichés can still have breakfast. Cathedral Coffee is an excellent addition to the Portland coffee scene. I met and spoken extensively with the owner and I believe this business is modeled for success and community involvement. Main focuses for this shop include N. Portland neighbors, cyclists and students among many others. There is a space that is designated as "no noise-ish" for business or studying and the public space has a great feel and is not crowded. Great design elements and the soon-to-come food menu is more than promising on top of the already great drink menu. This shop really caters to the full spectrum of Portland's sub-cultures. I'm so happy that Cathedral Coffee opened. The building was unoccupied for years after being newly built. It used to be a gas station back in the 50s or something. The old cement floor is still intact! Granted this place is very new and there are some kinks to work out, but from what I can deduce so far is they are on the right track. Coffee is superb, patsries appetizing, space cool and people are accomodating. They do not have coffee punch cards, so I hope they have them soon beacuse I will be going there a bunch. read more

Last year, a friend and I began a year-long "coffee shop hop" around the city of Portland! After visiting all the amazing coffee spots that Portland has to offer, Cathedral Coffee definitely takes first place. Everything about this coffee shop stands out - the interior, the customer service, the community, and most definitely the coffee! The interior space is one of my favorite things about this shop - a bookshelf that extends from floor to ceiling, brick counters, graffiti designed walls, lots of seating, and comfortable couches. This is a great space to work from, as well as to sit down and socialize with friends. The baristas are probably the most friendly coffee people I've every met. It's easy to notice how much they care about the coffee & the people they serve. The knowledge they have about their coffee is really up to par. Good luck figuring out the music preferences of this place though -- you'll hear anything from chill folk to throwback boy bands...depending on who is working. Sometimes the shop feels like an episode of "Friends." There's always a number of new-visitors, but definitely a substantial amount of regular customers. It doesn't take long to learn people's names and faces. All in all, this is definitely a shop worth visiting AND returning to! read more

You've got to be a local if you're reading this; Cathedral Coffee is in BFE (also known as St. John's) and is a hell of a drive from downtown. There is no way in hell I would drive here for a cup of coffee unless I lived in a 3 mile radius... there are just too many other options. Review for the place itself? Great coffee. The space itself looks like it was furnished/designed by a schizophrenic, with enough random furniture and décor to make Portlandia look mainstream. The barista was fantastic when I visited, but the guy working the register/counter was either high or special. Why go to Cathedral? Because they have great coffee in St. John's. I miss Ladybug, damnit. Passed out under one of the water towers the night before? Cathedral Coffee is a the place to go! read more

Their coffee was perfect, albeit overpriced by about 75 cents. I'd take a slightly less fancy bean for a little bit less if I had my druthers. But the baked goods, holy cow. I had a piece of banana bread with chocolate chips in it - a big honkin' thing - ate it before my coffee was ready and promptly ordered another one. I've never done that before, standing at the counter like that. But wow. So good. I think they make all of their pastries in house and there's not a bad bite in that there pastry chest. It's worth the walk from my house in Cathedral Park just to see what goodies they're offering on any given day. read more

I'm not big on coffee, but I do love a good coffee house. I was visiting a friend (I live in Vegas) and this little place is just a short walk from her house. We went in for a quick breakfast before getting our day started. The environment is great. Nice and cozy while still feeling open. Probably helped that the walls are the roll up door type. They were open about halfway to let the cool morning air breeze through. I got the sausage roll, it was pretty tasty. They warmed it for me and everything. The service is friendly and upbeat, too. The place was kept clean and I have no complaints. Prices are affordable as well. read more
