Finally!!! Real, rich coffee in North Portland. I often resort to Starbucks when I am in the area, but now that Cathedral is here that will no longer be necessary. There were a small amount of opening weekend kinks, (ex. oven not yet working) but the caliber of my Americano leaves me without a doubt that after the soft open, those will all be worked out. The owners are super personable, and eager to share the dreams they have for the space. Maybe musicians, maybe study hours, maybe pie? Can't wait! I'll be back. read more

The best coffee shop in NoPo, and maybe Portland proper. The coffee is terrific, the space is amazing, and the crew here is incredibly friendly and helpful. Jonah is the real deal, I've enjoyed swinging by and getting a latte and talking shop with him. They've worked hard to create an atmosphere where you can sit and relax for as long as you like, and they've paid attention to details. The mugs they use were all made by a local potter, and they've got some great art on the walls and built in furniture. As for lattes and the like, they have the best non-dairy options I've seen in a coffee shop. Soy, Rice milk, almond milk, and hemp. Nice. All in all, they've just opened and are already one of my favorites. Looking forward to hanging out here more. read more

The cool jazz playing in the background immediately sets the awesome vibe of this very cool coffee shop. The Tanager Third generation Costa Rican coffee is rich and delicious. Excellent coffee, pastries and ambiance but getting a little pricey. I've been going to Cathedral Coffee for years. I ordered a dark roast coffee for my cup. Before pouring it, the barista cleaned my cup with puro. Now it sparkles inside. The coffee is still excellent . . . at least as good as Starbucks - tastes may very. The bad news is a cup costs about $1 more than Starbucks. Pastries are much better than Starbucks offerings which are sugar free, fat free, salt free and hence taste free. The shop is open and cheery. There are several electrical outlets, but more are needed. Cathedral Coffee has three bookcases for exchanging books. I dropped two off and picked up a book written by one of my favorite authors. Another excellent visit. read more

Great ambience, plenty of nooks (including outdoor seating, MOUTH WATERING FOOD (daily but especially weekends), and actually friendly service (why is this so hard to find in Portland coffee shops?) This is one of my favorite places to go when I need to relax and focus. As I walk into the cozy coffee shop, I immediately feel calmed and ready to work on whatever I need to do. Came 10 minutes before closing time while taking an out of town relation on a cofee tour of Portland (in my defense, I didn't know), and the barista was still glad to serve us. Quite possibly the most balanced macchiato I've ever had; I would have loved to try their baked goods but they had just been put away and I didn't want to inconvenience the barista. Atmosphere is warm and inviting- there's even a book nook with a halfway decent library that denotes that this is a great place to spend some time alone studying or having a quiet conversation with friends. I went to university at UP (class of 13!), just a little over a mile from Cathedral, and I am bummed out that I never got to experience Cathedral Coffee on a rainy afternoon while hitting the textbooks- I'm sure I would have been more productive with the atmosphere, food, and drink as motivators! read more

I used to come here all the time to study when I was in college and loved it. I traveled a good distance to come here for brunch today, only to find out they got rid of their brunch menu :( The barista recommended that I get a savory pastry instead, but I was pretty hungry and looking forward to a nice brunch, so I went to Anna Banana's in St. John's instead. I would love to give a higher rating because I love the decor and their coffee, but I was pretty disappointed. Also the parking situation is pretty bad and it gets so crowded. Once I showed up with my friend to study and there was no space, so we walked out and were stopped by a barista who offered to tell someone else to move their stuff so we could stay. I felt uncomfortable kicking someone else out so I left and went to The Great North, also in St. John's. read more

The owner there is extremely nice and personable. All of the employees are great and make excellent drinks. My favorite is there house drip coffee called Cathedral Roast. Just be careful of the cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting! They're baked fresh everyday and can be dangerously addicting. The ambience is great. Absolutely epic. Our family lives across the street from Cathedral, so when we are in town for the holidays, this is our first stop. Whether you need to get a bit of work done on your computer, or if you want to sit and chat with friends, the vibe here is just so darn comfortable. It is a spacious place and filled with beautiful natural light. +The Tanager coffee is one of the best that we have ever encountered in our travels. +They always have plenty of seating +Great music +Really friendly staff that remember you and your name, even when you only come in once or twice a year! +great spread of baked goods. The rustic bread with locally made jam and butter is the perfect morning wake up when paired with their Cathedral house blend coffee. I'm a fan. I got left hanging once when I had arranged to have a job interview here on a Saturday morning, and they're weird hours ended up with me and my perspective employer around the campfire at the St. John's food cart pod at 7:30 in the morning on a Saturday in February as it rained... And while that job did not pan out, I did take a job with that interview or later on in my career and has been turning out awesome. But aside from the weird hours, I like the place. Cathedral is one of the most interesting coffee spaces in North Portland. First, it feels large which is nice. Lots of seating and the place feels welcoming and warm. There's fantastic graffiti art on the walls that encircles the space pulling together the warmer homey elements of wood and shelves covered in books organized by color. They bake their own pastries and I was told on Saturday morning that they are about to start serving breakfast. I'm very interested in what that will look like since I can't do gluten (BUT IF I DID SERIOUSLY THEY HAVE AN AMAZING SELECTION OF SWEET AND SAVORY). They also serve Tanglewood Chai which is made here in Portland. I would do a full five stars if I felt like their espresso beverages were consistent, but they've been hit and miss. Not anything bad, just not at a five start level. Great place to hang out and a nice out of the way spot. I'd love to see their small parking lot converted to a safer patio/bike area with some high counters for standing at. Maybe a little dog pen too. The cars trying to pull in and out can feel unsafe at times. It does look like they might be converting some other outdoor space into something special off to the side though. read more

I first stumbled upon Cathedral Coffee last fall. In the last year, they have really impressed me. The vibe is so inviting for a peaceful and/or productive day. The coffee is also locally roasted. Their Tanager coffee is always so good and I really like the ability to buy Tanager beans here. I met the owner and he is also such a nice dude. The baristas are chill. The mugs and plates, made by a local artist, are also so pleasant! The treats are solid. I had a maple scone that made me google 'How to make maples scones' and I enjoyed their cinnamon rolls too. The light inside this place is also so great, especially if you don't want to feel trapped inside on a sunny day. This is definitely my favorite coffee shop in Portland and I'm so glad it exists and I look forward to many more cups of coffee ;) read more

The espresso shot was so smooth, as a previous Barista, I'm picky. The person who made my drink did great; perfect balance and flavor. I had the strawberry cream cheese pastry. It was very tasty, a little doughy, but I tend to like it that way. The only reason I'm taking 1 star away, there were actually a few flies just chilling on the baked goods we ordered, kind of gross! Now, the best part about this little gem; the decor. Everything is up-cycled and incredibly creative. It's a great place to come to and get some work done, especially during the summer. read more

Their large drinks come in fantastic 20 oz cups with saucers. I have been here several times and enjoy the laid back atmosphere. They cycle work from different artists every so often on the walls. this is such a great local business. They have tasty pastries that can fit the gluten-free and vegan. The pastries you can tell her freshly made and have been perfected. The coffee I would say it's only OK. They do not have coconut milk which is a bummer to me, but they do make a lot of homemade syrups and always have a good special. Stopped in for a meeting, and it was surprisingly good! A little bit spendy; the 8 oz mocha was $4.00. However, it was a great mocha. Dropped in during the week for an espresso and a quick bite. First time back to this cafe for three or so years, and it is much-improved. The interior feels more cohesive now and the service was excellent. Only one staff member working, but he greeted me on arrival, made conversation at the register, and brought the drink and snack to my table. It's the small touches like this that make all the difference. The espresso was excellent and the savory pastry hit the spot. Atmosphere was chilled and cozy. This is my go-to coffee shop on the way to work. It also has a bus stop right out front. If I leave early enough I stop here to grab delicious dark coffee and some of the best baked goods around. The bakery guy is a genius. He not only whips up amazing sweet treats but savory, too! Not only is the food and coffee good, the space itself is so nice.
